The Spa Day

Rate this book
Christmas is a time for pampering yourself.

At least, that’s what Holly Nightingale thinks.

A hard-working nurse, she has given herself an early Christmas gift – three days at Willows, a posh health farm in the Surrey countryside, so she’ll look nice for her fiancé and his family for Christmas.

She’s looking forward to a few days of seaweed wraps, bamboo massages, superfood facials, steam baths, healthy eating and relaxing dips in the swimming pool.

But not everything in Holly’s life is perfect.

Her fiancé Clive, a busy investment banker, works full time in Hong Kong and it’ll be a couple of years before he finally returns home. Sometimes, Holly wonders what she’s doing, and as she sits by the spa with the pampered, unfaithful wives of the Home Counties, she wonders what sort of married life she’ll embark upon. Will she end up like them?

But perhaps it doesn’t have to be like that.

Will Clive end up spending Christmas without Holly?

I enjoyed this book, but then the end was a big let-down.

This was an enjoyable chick-lit read, and I liked Holly, even if she did moan and ramble a bit. I felt quite sorry for her in the way she got stuck with Rebecca, and I liked that she was a normal down-to-earth sort of girl.

The storyline in this wasn’t earth-shattering, but it was entertaining, and I found it quite funny in places. I liked the way Holly used what she learned at the spa to evaluate her own love-life, and she seemed to come to some perceptive conclusions. The ending however, was a disappointment.

I’m not sure what I expected from the ending, but it wasn’t what I got. I’m not sure whether I expected a romance to develop between James and Holly, I don’t think I did really, but I didn’t like the way things ended.

An enjoyable short read. Witty, with some great lines and a fun setting. Sometimes, all it takes is some me-time to figure out your priorities.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, gritty, sarcastic humoured book this is one for you.

Once I'd started reading, I was drawn straight in by Holly's quirky personality and honesty. (I'm sure a lot of people are actually going to criticise how honest she is, but me, I found it refreshing.)

Holly is your typical girl. Moody, anti-social, sarcastic, food obsessed, with a heart of gold, and a longing to be loved and happy.
When she ends up being forced into a "friendship" with sex mad, glamour puss Rebecca. She can't help but feel the need to take a good look into her life and realise the mistakes she’s making.
Rebecca made the book for me. Her mouth never stopped, she has no shame and from beginning to end doesn't fail to lower the tone having you smiling.

For a short story it has enough in it to satisfy most needs and is written well enough to allow a good knowledge of the characters straight away. I liked that greatly about this.

The spa day is an honest, open-minded, quirky, whirlwind read. I can guarantee it will have you giggling.

Not quite a 3/5...I liked some moments in the story, but on the whole, I wasn't sure I liked Holly. She was very snarky with her thoughts but didn't seem to be able to assert herself when put in situations she clearly wasn't happy with (mainly concerning Rebecca). It also wasn't a very plot driven story so it seemed a bit boring at times, but once you realise that the whole story is going to take place at the spa retreat, you can start to appreciate that the story is about Holly coming to some realisations about her relationship. The romance seemed a bit rushed, and maybe not entirely believable in the sense that Holly didn't even encounter James outside of the spa...it may have been fun if Holly escaped from the spa one night and ran into James out in the real world, where they could have developed a connection outside the scope of his role as her Masseuse. Just a thought.

Good comedy, no romance

Quite adequate as a comedy, but there was no romance. So, as a romantic comedy, Id say it flopped.
What, Im assuming, was to be considered the romantic part, came exactly two pages from the end. In other words, it would have been a much better story, had it begun where this one ends.
But, it doesnt, does it? It starts where it starts, and goes, well, really nowhere. For me, this one is a huge miss.

Short and sweet

Extremely quick read (only five chapters) but was entertaining throughout. This is the second such book I have read in the last two days from this author. There is a theme to the storylines where a woman realises that the long term relationship she is in is not going anywhere. Good for when you have a couple of hours to spare but has made me hungry now.

BAH HUMBUG! This one was missing all the sparkles and tingles and joy of the holidays. Not much romance -- some comedy. Felt like I got a stocking full of coal with lots of the blah - boring variety.

DNF

The first few pages were Holly complaining about other people and her impressions of them based solely on looks. She was wondering if a woman was human before she even had a chance to say. Not worth Sven starting.

THE SPA DAY
Nicola Yeager

Review by Author Roy Murry

Spa Day is not one but three days of fun conversations between Holly and an unwarranted spa interloper. She listens to Rebecca, a worldly, wealthy woman, explain life with a man who lives and works distances away while she enjoys sparing.

Holly's fiancé is in Asia working, and she is at the spa getting spruced up for his return to England for Christmas. Rebecca is giving Holly lessons on being married under similar circumstances.

Holly's mind goes into tailspins and is comforted by her bamboo massage therapist. Then, a text message from Asia arrives, influencing Holly's future.

You must read this fun book to see where her future begins. This book is my second Yeager read. I will get another, and you should read one too.

Holly was treating herself to a spa getaway just before Christmas and she makes some revelations while on this getaway. It is a very nice story.

Had trouble sleeping one night and downloaded this book after seeing it promoted on Twitter. It was a fun read and I liked the characters. There was a consistent pace and some juicy drama. I'll definitely read more from her.

May 2017 Review:
I cannot believe that I didn't archive/delete this book from my Kindle back in 2013. I mean... this is... not great in my opinion. I highly doubt this will ever see light of day on my Kindle again.

The only reason I read it now, was that I was looking for a quick read for my train tomorrow and thought I'd read a few pages now. I managed to read 25% in less than five minutes so figured I might as well finish the torture and read the whole thing in one sitting. Which I did in about 40 minutes... On the Kindle this 'story' actually own fills 80% of the book, the remainder looks to be used to advertise another story from the publisher. So I guess this is definitely a short story.

On the positive side... the writing isn't awful. It moves the plot (what little there is of it) on and does a decent job of describing things and showing them to you rather than just saying them. That aside...

Describing the lead as a female dog (see my original review below) is rather charitable in hindsight I think... At one point she wishes someones else would have a stroke, but it's fine because it was that person's fault for making her think it?? I mean... what?? Someone else is nice to her when she's clearly a bit emotional and her thoughts are to call them a silly cow? (But when the handsome male masseur does the same thing that's okay?) And this person is supposed to be a nurse? I don't buy it. If this person is a nurse she's a Nurse Ratched type.

Things seem to be the fault of everyone but hers (once again I don't recall, or care to look up the leads name) - her fiance texts in the middle of the night and it wakes her up? Ever heard of sleep hours love? Or turning the volume off? Or even, turning off the phone?!?! Yeah, totally his fault you woke up...

Yeah, not a great book. I'd argue this barely scrapes a single star.

December 2013 Review:
This was short, like really short and because of that it lacked any sort of character development (I highly doubt that the lead is meant to come across as a female dog but to me she does) or any romantic development (yes the fiancee is out of the picture for the entire book but the male lead is barely in it and apart from him being 'hot' I see no connection between him and the female lead - none at all). I cannot even remember the names of the characters and I finished the book about 2 minutes ago - that is how little an impression it left on me.

I rounded my star rating up to a three for this one. I was somewhere between an "it's okay" and "liked it". I've read other works by this author and found them to more enjoyable than this novella.

I agree with others that this book could have used a little more editing. I am really anal when I read, so I likely notice things like missing words and punctuation more than others. I realize that no one is perfect, so I'm willing to forgive a few instances. But there is one passage towards the end of the story where the main character tells her life story to the (I'm guessing) romantic interest. She waits for his response. Then about two paragraphs later, she basically tells him everything again. I have a hard time believing that the second recap needed to be there. There also seemed to be an over abundance of exclamation points.

Being a Christmas themed book, I expected there to be more of a holiday tone. Take out a handful of references and this could be set at any time of year. This isn't a bad thing per se, just an observation. If you're expecting mistletoe and caroling, you're not going to find it here.

I also agree with those who have said that the book ends rather abruptly. You can conclude for yourself what happens, I suppose, but I kind of felt disappointed that there wasn't more of a concrete ending.

So what are the positives? Like with the author's other books, I enjoy her witty characters. She seems to write with a brand of humor that I appreciate and I found myself at least smirking at some of her snarky comments. The characters are likeable enough and she does a good job of contrasting Holly with Rebecca (the person she doesn't want to end up being).

I found this to be a quick, enjoyable enough read, but it didn't knock my socks off.

I wanted to like this novella so much. I liked the idea of a character finding love while at a spa. I picked up my Kindle and curled up with a blanket on the futon. I was ready for a cozy romance. This was not the cozy romance that I was hoping for. First, Holly is mean. The book blurb describes her as a Bridget Jones, but I never see the Jones' sparkle. Granted, Holly never says the mean things, she just thinks them. I just wish I didn't have to read her thoughts. Second, the romance is a bit sudden. Okay, from the get-go we know who the guy is going to be, but up until the last moment, I didn't really see the two getting together. I could have just seen the two characters being friends; there was no romantic spark. Third, Holly didn't really grow or learn anything. I would have been fine with this, because this is a novella; however, Holly continues to be a mean until the end. It would have been nice, if she was less mean because she fell in love (yep, I really just wrote that!). If you are looking for a fun and cute holiday novella, look some place else. :(

Amazon freebie. It is now $2.99. I liked it for free; I would not have liked it for $2.99. But then again I would never pay $2.99 for what is essentially a short story.

It is competently written with some misspellings, typos, wrong word choices. Not egregious, but present.

Our heroine Holly takes herself to a posh spa to prep herself for Christmas with the future in-laws.

In a vague, nonspoilerish fashion Holly (yeah, there are Christmas/Holly jokes) begins to re-evaluate her relationship with her long-distance fianc. There are characters and circumstances introduced to move the story along.

The spa is a rather unique setting that allows for interactions with strangers and opportunities for reflections on her life situation.

Very quick read. It has humor, some little twists, and a rather unsatisfactory ending.

All in all, a good little read for free.

The first thing I must say here is that this novella was also available with an alternative title "The Spa Day".

This is a fantastic, well written little chick-lit novella, perfect for the run-up to Christmas. It focusses on Holly who has booked herself in for three days at a swish health spa to fortify and beautify herself in readiness to spend Christmas with her fiancé Clive, with whom she has a long term relationship as he is working in Hong Kong, and his parents. The author's characters are absolutely wonderful, in particular Rebecca - the sort of larger than life, flighty, flirty person you would duck into the nearest shop to avoid in real life. Holly's break from routine gives her time to really consider for the first time her lifestyle and relationship with Clive - Is it what she wants? Can he be trusted? Does she really want to end up like Rebecca in another 10 years?

A very light hearted, easy to read story - highly recommended.

A warning to anyone who is thinking about signing up for Kindle Unlimited: don't. Books like this are all you're going to get.

This is a Christmas story? Nah. It's 45 pages of descriptions of different types of massages, 20 pages of tedious conversation between two completely unlikeable characters, and about half a page talking about Christmas. And OMG author, please work with an editor next time.

"‘I’m going to start with the small of your bag, then slowly work up to your shoulders and neck.'"

"He leaves the room and I hear the discrete ‘click’ of the door."

"...waiting for Prince William to sew his wild oats..."

And far, FAR too many exclamation points. When you've got one in the middle of a sentence (!), you know you've used too many.

Blergh. I ended up skimming the last two chapters. A waste of time.

This story reminded me a lot of Bridget Jones. A single girl trying to figure out who she is and who she wants to give herself to, Holly has had terrible luck with men until she meets Clive, a successful business man. He seems to be her knight in shining armor until time at the spa causes her to stop and analyze her relationship and life.

I liked the story. It was cute. Christmas was not the center of the story. It loomed in the background waiting for its time to appear. What was center stage was Holly's thoughts of herself, those at the spa and her thoughts on Clive and their pending marriage. I liked how Holly's story evolved and unfolded. It was well timed and executed. A tip of the hat to Yeager for this well told Christmas love story.

A lovely little pre Christmas novella. Holly a nurse has been secretly saving and books herself into a spa for three days of pampering in anticipation of Christmas with her new finance at his parents.

Holly meets Rebecca a very spoilt rich wife who she goes to great lengths to avoid. Rebecca likens Holly to herself and Holly doesn't like what she sees.

Time away from her everyday life gives Holly the opportunity to really see what path she has chosen - does she like the direction her life is heading?

An insightful novella which had me silently shouting my opinion's out. Well worth a read if you have a couple of hours to spare. I wouldn't really categorise it as a Christmas story though.

7/10 from me. I enjoyed this tale about Holly and her experiences while staying at a Health Spa.

Holly is engaged to be married but her fiance works abroad and she hardly ever sees him. During her stay at the Health Spa she begins to think about her relationship and whether this is the life that she wants for the rest of her life.

As Christmas is fast approaching and plans that have been made look like they are set to change, will life ever be the same again?

Whilst this is a short read at 62 pages, you are soon engrossed in Holly's life and the story works well for the length of it. My main complaint is that the Author could have paid more attention to detail, as there were a number of sloppy spelling mistakes.

3 1/2 stars!

I don´t get why this book has such a low rating. It is well written, funny and short. There are no typos or mistakes as in other free short e-books out there. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

It´s about Holly and her three day health-farm vacation a few days before christmas. Holly meets some people and starts to think about herself and her life - especially her fiancé Clive and their long distance relationship.

It is nothing innovative or new. It´s the usual chick-flick but that does not have to be a bad thing, has it? It does not get too cheesy as well, which I appreciate.

Worth a read!

A great little novella, centering around nurse-with-attitude, Holly, that is just perfect for those wanting to squeeze a read into a hectic festive schedule.

As Holly relaxes her troubles away, even more come to the forefront as she realizes Christmas won’t pan out as she’d hoped. Over the course of 72 hours, Holly hilariously attempts make sense of her and Clive’s relationship, dodge spoilt rich wife Rebecca, and endure the pain that is bamboo massages. It’s a quick and easy read that’s a great little pick me up for the festive season.

A novella about Holly and her gift to herself - 3 days at a spa. It is right before Christmas and she receives many lovely treatments which make her feel pampered and special. During her time there, she has the opportunity to start evaluating her life. Mostly she considers, Clive, her jerk of a fiance and their lack of a relationship. One woman is someone she fears is her future if she continues the long distance love affair with Clive. The thought is appalling. She also meets one of the employees who allows her to see that there are people in the world who love and care for one another.

All in all a pretty good book. It is a quick and an easy read.

Okay, I was bummed by this book. It doesn't happened often, but this one it did. I knew it was a novella, I didn't realize it would be so depressing. Also it ended with NO closure, does she go with James? There was a part in the book where she was talking about Clive but it was printed James, which was an obvious over look. I think this could have been good, but there was nothing making me even like the main character or even care what happened for the most part. She was funny, but also some of her comments were just mean. I was looking for a fun holiday short novella, and this was not it.

This book started really well, at least for the first paragraph. Then it all went wrong.

Firstly, the author seemed to overuse exclamation marks in an attempt to sound engaging or point out the sentence was supposed to be 'witty'. Every other sentence has one and it was so irritating.

Then there were the typos and the words missing, and, I think at one point the wrong character's name was used because it just didn't make sense. Thank God this book was free...

The characters were not hugely likeable, especially Holly who moaned about everything. Along with this, the ending was too abrupt and left too much open.

If it wasn't a short story I'd have given up.

This book needed an editor. Badly.

I got this book when it was free, and I like a cute Christmas story as much as the next person. My criticism has to do with the editing of this novel. Too many exclamation points! Even for a chick lit romantic comedy! Seems like Holly thought in exclamations all the time! Even after her massages!

I hope Ms. Yeager reads this and takes my critique to heart. Cute story, yes. Hunky romantic interest, sure. Needed a bit more depth to the story, and about a hundred fewer exclamation marks.

I quiet enjoyed this short story, i felt i engaged with the charactors and i will be trying out the Bamboo massage next time i am at a Spa. I actually didnt realise id got to the last page. I didnt want it to be the end. I felt this could of been made into a longer story by following Holly & James to his idealic house for Christmas. Rebecca was your typical 'Get out of my face' person. Maybe Clive & Rebecca would be much more suited.
