Nova Williams has lost her one shot at Lieutenanthood and at love. Lieutenant Crophaven has promoted her rival, Andromeda, all because her lifemate, Sirius, sacrificed their mission to win back Andromeda’s love. While sneaking out to prove Andromeda is a fake, Nova finds an alien ship hovering over their colony. Lieutenant Crophaven assigns her to a reconnaissance mission, giving her a second chance to redeem herself. Sirius must fly her and a research team to the vessel to decide if they are a threat. Thrown together with the lifemate that betrayed her, she battles with her own jealousy while her team battles for their lives. Can she forgive Sirius in order to save her team and warn her colony?
Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation-favorite character was Data by far-, and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.
Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be "A concert flutist" when she grew up. When she made that happen, she decided one career was not enough and embarked as a fantasy, sci fi author. Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.
Now for the professional bio:
Aubrie Dionne is an author and flutist in New England. Her writings have appeared in Mindflights, Niteblade, Silver Blade, Emerald Tales, Hazard Cat, Moon Drenched Fables, A Fly in Amber, and Aurora Wolf. Her books are published by Entangled Publishing, Lyrical Press, and Gypsy Shadow Publishing. She recently signed her YA sci fi novel with Inkspell Publishing titled: Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed, which will release in October 2012. When she's not writing, Aubrie teaches flute and plays in orchestras. She's a big Star Trek TNG fan, as well as Star Wars and Serenity.
Just when I thought this series was going to have a hard time topping the book one...BAM! Reconnaisance by brilliant author Aubrie Dionne does it! Picking up the story of Andromeda and the colonization of Paradise 21, Nova Williams, Andromeda's over-achieving nemesis, is still stinging from Andromeda's successes and how Sirius, Nova's chosen lifemate, is till trying to win back Annie's love. When Nova finds a hovering alien ship, she is put in charge of a reconnaissance mission that may either save her pride or destroy her completely. When Sirius deviates from orders, the mission and its members are put in grave peril, injured and lost in a field of poisonous flowers. Guess who saves her? Yep, Andromeda and Corvus. But they aren't safe yet, they are trapped and attacked by monstrously ugly and intelligent alien life forms who are harvesting others as a food source. Is this to be their demise? Will Nova never have the man she has secretly loved for years?
Again, I applaud Aubrie Dionne for her gift with words! Horrific monsters were fully painted in my mind, (can you say EEEEWWWWWWW!) the eery spaceship with danger lurking at every corner, whoa! Reconnaissance is another fast-paced, smooth-flowing and creative coming of age story for another of the colonists! Again, the characters are real teens dealing with things far beyond what they should have to and shining bright in the end!
My thanks to the author for providing me with this review copy!
I would like to thank the author for providing me a copy of this book for an honest review.
From what I’ve read, this book picks up where the first book left off. To me, this book can be read as a standalone. The author did a great job in giving a story separate from that one but also giving info where needed to keep the reader up to speed with prior happenings. Will I go back and read the first one? Yes, because enough of that story is given, without giving too much, that it struck my interest immediately.
The characters that the author created have spunk. Nova, who the book is about, is stubborn as a mule, but as the story going on you feel her insecurities, jealousy, disappointment plus her hopes, dreams and possibilities. She’s a creature of habit that learns quickly that she is part of her own undoing through her actions and words.
The love story is one that many of us have dealt with ourselves. Being in love with someone who loves someone else. Through the dangers that have them together, the couple learns to put that aside and be able to trust one another, count on each other, and work together to get out of the danger and finish the mission.
This book is YA science fiction at its best. You are grabbed by the story from the very start, you connect with the characters, you experience the horrors of the alien race and feel like you are right there in the story itself. Science fiction is not an easy genre to write, it’s very easy to go off course of the story with too much information, too much fantasy infused details, etc, but this author has nailed it.
I recommend this to any lover of science fiction, be it hard scifi or mainstream or campy like Starship Troopers (which I have seen more times than should be humanly allowed) and feel that this would also be a good read for anyone adventuring into the scifi genre for the first time.
Nova Williams craves a lieutenant-making mission, but this one mission threatens her entire world in Aubrie Dionne’s Reconnaissance.
The second book in the Paradise Reclaimed series, Reconnaissance picks up where Colonization left off, but with the new main character, Nova Williams. A hard-working, no-nonsense young woman, Nova strives to be the perfect expedition leader, but everything that can go wrong will for her. I love how Dionne chose Nova to tell the story and how the reader experiences Nova’s growth. Sirius, Nova’s chosen lifemate, makes the perfect match to Nova’s sarcastic wit. The vicious, intelligent, and creepy alien arachnids are a formidable force against the team members.
The fast-paced plot works perfectly for YA science fiction, and Dionne creates wonderful budding romance between Nova and Sirius. The nightmarish aliens add a delightful touch of horror. Dionne held back no punches as she tormented her characters and created this wonderful science fiction planet of Paradise 21.
Aubrie Dionne’s Paradise Reclaimed series gets better with each book. I highly recommend Reconnaissance!
3 1/2 stars. I wondered if I would enjoy Reconnaissance because it's about Nova, a character I really didn't like in the first book, Colonization but I did end up enjoying it. We get a different perspective on who Nova is and the reasons behind some of her behavior. She makes some nice changes by the end as well. The aspect of the book that I liked the most was meeting the creepy crawly aliens. Sometimes they seemed intelligent, which of course was a good thing that added danger and tension to the story. But sometimes they seemed rather stupid which resulted in the characters getting out of situations way too easily. I have the same complaints about this book that I had with the other one. Why are 17 year olds being trusted with important missions? Where are all the adults that should be doing those things?
I was given a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
Nova Williams is a selfish person who wants everything and everyone for herself. She is jealous of Andromeda Barliss, Commander Barliss' great-granddaughter. When they first arrived on Paradise 21 Andromeda saved the lives of everyone on the ship by informing them of the poisonous pods on the planet. Ghost aliens told Andromeda about the pods and how they destroyed their race. Nova wanted to be the one to save the colony and make Lieutenant, but Andromeda got the position. Nova is so jealous that she leaves a wedding party and the ship. She can't stand to be around anyone no longer. She hates Andromeda and she can't stand the fact that her lifemate Sirius is always looking at Andromeda like a sick puppy dog. Nova only cares about herself but now she wants Sirius to look at her like that. To her Sirius is the best catch on the whole ship. Nova just wants to be the best to have the best. She has some Problem within herself that she needs to deal with. Some deep hurt, pain in heart who or what caused this she doesn't even know.
At first Nova did seem selfish wanting everything and everyone for herself. But she wasn't exactly being selfish she just wanted her life to be better. Her family had a hard time dealing with their problems. Nova was not going tell anyone about her problems so she just lashed out at everyone. But she was different with her family. When she was with them you could tell she really did care about others and not only herself. She just wanted what everyone else wanted a better life. I'm beginning to think that maybe Nova has a heart after all.
Yes, I knew Nova had a heart in there somewhere. She was afraid of letting anyone in, she thought if she let them in the only thing that would happen is she would be hurt. She was afraid that everyone would she stomp her heart until there was nothing left if she let them in, let anyone know who she really was. So she tried to make them think she didn't care about anyone but herself. When I first started reading Reconnaissance I didn't think I would like Nova she just seemed so selfish. But the more I read I realized that she was just afraid that she wouldn't be good enough, that no one would ever like her.
I loved reading Colonization, I loved Andromeda's story and she save their colony from the pods and I was very excited to have the chance to read Nova's story. Colonization was the first book that I read by Aubrie Dionne after reading I knew I had to read more of her work. I had to know more about Paradise 21 and all the other spaceships. I now have all of the New Dawn books and plan on reading all of them. I have read Paradise 21 and loved it too. If you have not read Aubrie's work then you are missing an adventure of a lifetime because she is a brilliant writer.
This is a book I won in the Goodreads Giveaways - Hopefully I phrased that right! I am in no way being paid to review this. Just graced with a good read! Which I'm more than happy to review. :)
I have since finished the book. I also stand by my review. It can almost be a standalone book in the way that it was written. I'm enjoying watching as her writing matures - It's not coming across as childish or repetitive :) So I recommend this book for anyone looking for a good new scifi novel that's young adult in nature.
I'm almost done with this book and so far? It's amazing. The characters are fairly well developed, and I'm sure they will grow even more if she decides to add another book (Or even make it into an entire series, at least that's what I can tell just from this book which I haven't finished yet, I'm almost there though). For not having read the first book, this could almost stand on its own. She mentions the first book a few times, but its not completely reliant on it.
Nova is brave and has her faults, which as she discovers didn't help things with her life-mate Sirius. Who she had pushed away with her attitude, then again he hadn't tried very hard to get to know her, to push past her bravado to find out who she really was or what was going on in her life. However, that changes once they board the alien's ship and they start facing danger. Once that happens, she loosens up and tells him things. In fact, later in the book, he tells her if things were different, he'd have chosen her.
This is a book about changing, growing, and facing things you wouldn't want to normally. You don't get to choose who you marry, they're chosen for you for the good of the human race and their genes. You don't get to choose what job you will work, your grades in school will mandate that.
Overall, its an interesting read and I'll be sure to check out the first book and any subsequent books. I may update this once I've finished it, until then? Enjoy a good book!
Striving to be better than her genes, Nova Williams pushes herself past her limits. She missed out on a grand promotion because her rival stole her glory and Sirius, the man she loves. Yet when an alien ship comes to their new planet, Nova heads a team to find out if the visitors are peaceful or not. This is her one chance to make everything right, and she isn't going to mess it up. Sirius is assigned to be her pilot, and she must learn to work with him no matter her feelings. Trapped on the strange ship, Nova is forced to work closely with Sirius as they attempt to save the rest of their team and battle beings that have walked out of nightmares. Not only is their survival at stake, but her heart and redemption.
This is another superbly written sci-fi romance by Aubrie Dionne. We start off just after the previous book in the series left us. This new world recently colonized by the people on the ship is rich and gorgeous. It's called Paradise 21 for a reason, and Aubrie gives us enough colorful details to enchant us. After a tantalizing taste of the planet, the reader is thrown into a more frightening and strange place within the alien ship. It's dark and terrifying, and also fascinating. I won't give away the surprise of what the aliens are exactly like, but from the cover you can guess, and you'll never look at a spider the same way again.
The characters are what drives this story. Nova is a strong and driven young woman. I admired her ambition and sympathized with her heartache. Sirius is smart, daring, and hot. He's in love with another woman. I loved the conflict between Nova and Sirius, and I wondered if it could be resolved. Aubrie is a master of surprises! This is a romance like none other.
The first book in this series, COLONIZATION, was my favorite one written by Aubrie. By giving me the creepy crawlies and taking hold of my heart, RECONNAISSANCE has taken that spot.
You can read an excerpt at my blog, Go Here to read it
I really love Aubrie’s writing and the sci-fi books that she has written. I have read her New Dawn series, which actually ties into this one, now its not necessary to read all of them to read this series, but it does help on the history, but like I said, you do not have to.
I do recommend you reading the first book in this series however, as this 2nd book starts off right where the first stopped. Unlike many of the other books in the previous series, which all were their own story within the same world, usually generations later for the characters.
I do not want to spoil anything so will be careful on that.
The first book was from Andromeda’s point of view, and I liked her a lot. She has a rival named Nova, who was paired with Sirius who is Andromeda’s best friend and who she has feelings for. In this book, it’s all told from Nova’s point of view, which at first had me like “what?” but it works, you get to learn a lot about Nova, and when you do, you will feel that connection with her. I didn’t like her in the first book at all, so was surprised I warmed up to her.
As usual the writing is top notch, and I highly recommend any books by Aubrie, but really did enjoy this series for sure.
I give it 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it.
I was provided a copy of this from the author, for my honest review.
This is Nova Williams story from book one I did not like her in book one she was a complete bitch to Annie; and you all know I loved Annie. we are able to see and understand why Nova is the way she is. she is from a dysfunctional family and she works exceptionally hard for her achievements. This still does not excuse her bitchy nasty behavior. she grew on me the more I read and the bottom line is she is just trying to find love and be loved in equal measures. Really and truly who doesn't? The colony is under treat and this is Nova's turn to prove herself. After discovering an alien vessel. She along with her chosen lifemate Sirius who she is in love with but has pushed away and three other embark on a mission to make contact with the ship and find out their purpose for being on their planet. their journey is filled with deadly adventure and action. Nova love story was on that could be understood by many loving someone that's in love with someone else. Nova will discover that love and admiration can be forged in the face of adversity. "I'd wanted him to look at me that way for so long.Too bad it took an alien invasion and us almost getting killed to make it happen"
Being caught in a life or death situation Nove and Sirius must learn to trust and lean on each other if they are to survive to warn the colony, before its too late.
This book was much more action packed than number one every single page if over flowing with action and terrifying new challenges.
Aubrie did a great job once more, the this book is well written and will hold attention until the very last word .
Reconnaissance begins once again with the colonization of Paradise 21. Nova Williams who is Andromeda's rival, is still upset over Andromeda's success. She finds an alien ship hovering over the planet and is put in charge of a reconnaissance mission.
That's the only piece of data I will give you because I simply hate spoilers. But trust me you are going to want to grab a copy of book 2 after reading book 1. As in the first book we again have a wonderfully built world. With a planet so vibrant you may as well be there.
As for the aliens, I say just look at the cover and well ick I hated spiders before especially since we have some seriously deadly ones here in Australia, but now, I don't think I will ever look at a spider exactly in the same way.
Once again Aubrie has a hit on her hands with this book! It is perfect for those science fiction addicts out there. I will say one other thing, Book 1 Colonization was fabulous but I think that Book 2 Reconnaissance is a slightly better story in the surprises which happen. *zips lip* that's all I'm saying! So I give this book 4.5 stars!
Details/Disclaimer: Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Reconnaissance is book two in the Paradise Reclaimed series, it picks up from where Colonization left off still in Paradise 21. I actually liked Nova in this book, where I didn’t in the last one. Mainly focusing on Nova on this book but still the old characters are in it too. Again this is a fast pacing book with plenty happening and it gives the history of Nova’s life which does explain why she is the way she is.
Aubrie Dionne penned a fantastic read with great characters and I really did love this book.
Great follow up to Colonization. I loved the chance to get to know Nova, and to discover that she wasn't quite the person she appeared in the first book. It think it takes great skill to take a character who we didn't like in book 1, and turn her into someone we identify with.
A really enjoyable read. This author is on my automatic buy list.
Tired of the medal ceremony and out-of-her-mind jealous, Nova Williams goes outside and witnesses an alien spaceship. The colonists are once again in danger of an alien species. A reconnaissance team is quickly put together for first contact and to learn as much as possible. The team must save themselves and protect the colony.
Much like the first book in this series, this sequel was a warp-speed fast read. Slow reader that I am, I still atonishingly breezed through this in a day. The action and suspense propelled me forward. The world building, again, was amazing. Paranormal and science fiction fans will get a kick out of the details. The phrases like “holy mother of the universe” and “by the Guide” reminded me of Battlestar Galactica.
Telling the story from Nova’s point of view was quite the adjustment. The first book portrayed her severely and negatively. It is difficult to like a book when you do not like the main character. This is especially true if the story is told from first person. Thus, my very first impression was that it was difficult to get into simply because the point of view had changed. It did get better though within just a couple of pages and my apprehension was short-lived. So, hang in there, readers.
The adventure here was like a kids’ version of crossing Contact and Aliens with a mission straight out of Star Gate SG-1. There is an alien ship which has come to the planet and must be investigated to see whether they are friend or foe. There was some speculation over who should be on the team that goes. At the same time, in some sections, the characters in this book are stealthily crawling around ventilation ducts in a dangerous space ship, giving me flashbacks of Sigourney Weaver with the alien hot on her trail. I say “kids version” because, really, Silly String is not going to last 800 years and if there truly is an alien space ship on the horizon there is just no way in deep-space-hell that anyone in charge would let a kid decide who will be on the reconnaissance team, much less allow the team be made up of kids. The weapons are laser guns and are holy mother of a black hole cool. I wondered if they sounded like the ray guns in Star Wars. This arachnophobe loved everything about the alien encounter.
Once again, lover of romance novels over here, I was not a fan of the romance storyline here. The backstory for the romance aspects in this book is based upon a premise (front and center in the first book) which seems wholly unrealistic. The first book just ruined this whole angle for me. There is also some emotional disjointedness here. If you are new to the series, though, not having read the first book or without knowing the backstory might actually work in your favor. Just pretend Andromeda is a simple ex-girlfriend or ex-crush. Then, the romance works and you are good to go.
Overall, I would say this book is better than the first in this series. Everything comes full circle and wraps up nicely into a quite satisfying ending. There is a loose end or two on the periphery which leaves the door open for more. It is open enough that the author could continue the colonists’ story in many directions and yet closed enough that this book is able to stand on its own. This is how I want to see books in a series written. Given the fight scenes depicted here along with a kiss or two, this book is about as graphic as Star Wars and I would say it is fine for a younger audience. I have only read this series by this author and based upon these two books I would not hesitate to pick up another book by her.
I’m sure we’ve all read about that one bitchy girl or character in the novel that’s just there to make the protagonist absolutely miserable. Usually I end up just feeling pretty indifferent about her, wanting to slap her silly or feel slightly annoyed at the author for using yet another cliché. Remember Nova, who always seemed to hate Andromeda no matter what she did? Well, in RECONNAISSANCE, instead of staying in Andromeda’s head, you’re in Nova’s. And as a result, I even ended up loving this book more than the first!
Nova’s definitely a much different character compared to Andromeda. I feel like she’s much less of a “Mary Sue”, which is probably the reason why I liked Nova a lot more than Annie. She’s still a pretty caring and brave person, but she knew her limits and that she couldn’t save everyone. I also thought she was a lot less frustrating. I remember in Colonization, I felt really frustrated with Andromeda in the beginning, because all she did was complain about who she was assigned to, and thought she was too good for what she received. Nova, on the other hand, worked her hardest towards her goal from the beginning, and tried her best to do with what she got stuck with. I admired her ability to do things instead of complaining, as well as her constant will to survive. She’s the type of heroine that I really see as kick-ass!
On that topic, I thought it was interesting to get into Nova’s head. You know how teachers or parents tell you that bullies are actually just people who feel insecure about themselves or have had hard pasts? Well, here you’re able to learn about what had happened to Nova, and how she tries to deal with it. However cliché it might sound, Nova really did have a hard past, which made me sympathize with her. And in my eyes, it also made her a much more believable character to me.
I also found that the plot was more exciting. For one, the novel immediately throws you into the action. Moreover, there’s still that sense of scientific discovery and new world, as you see Nova and her crew learn about the different technology and creatures in the ship. But there’s a more traditional sense of adventure, as Sirius and Nova blast creepy creatures, explore the ship and simply try to survive, which I ended up enjoying the most. Who doesn’t love a good number of action and fight scenes? The whole experience was much more exciting for me, even throwing a few twists here and there!
The only problem I had was with the romance. In the end, it was pretty sweet, but it felt a bit forced during the middle of the novel. Especially since Sirius and Nova were literally fighting for their lives, I couldn’t feel their chemistry. I also had a hard time believing that Sirius could get over Andromeda that quickly and easily. It also felt a bit cliché and predictable.
With a new perspective and adventure, RECONNAISSANCE not only delivered a satisfactory sequel to COLONIZATION, but also even surpassed it. There’s much, much more action, and I ended up liking Nova a lot more than I thought I would. Fans of the first novel definitely need to check this book out, since I found it much more enjoyable than the first. And if you’re a sci-fi romance fan and haven’t started this series yet, you definitely need to do so!
* I received a review copy of this book for the blog tour. This did not affect my opinion.
I love the world-building of this book and its predecessor. We don't get to see much from our MC's last book as this is all about Nova and Sirius. I loved seeing things from Nova's pov and the adventure and danger that this managed to bring out considering it mostly took place inside a spaceship is truly impressive.
I was on the edge of my seat much of the book. I could really picture what was happening. I loved Nova's character and thought she did a good job of carrying much of the book as most of the other characters--except for Sirius--didn't have much page time.
There was three things I didn't really care for.
- The romance. I felt like Nova loved Sirius with no real reason given for why she would've fallen for him as he's done nothing for her and was clearly not interested. Sirius starts out pretty hooked on Andromeda and doesn't care about Nova and her feelings. The one date he takes her on turns out to be him really just wanting details on Andromeda.
To be honest the way he played Nova for that date was horrible. Showed up acting like he was sorry and like he honestly wanted to get to know her. I think after that Nova should've been way more wary--and possibly over him--of Sirius and his motivations. But to suddenly go from that to I desperately love you was too much of a reversal.
Within hours this guy goes from zero interest, liking someone else, etc. to being head over heals for Nova. I didn't buy it and thought it was too big of a change over too short of a time period.
- Sirius for above reasons, I really didn't like him. He seemed like a jerk that just wanted to play people. The way he treated Andromeda the last book, "I don't want to fight for you. Oh wait, now that I see you like the guy you're with I want you." was unimpressive. To then see the way he treated Nova and the vacillation between who he loves, blah blah, just made him wishy-washy and seem like a player.
- Lyra. She's out of commission most of the book, but manages to be revived long enough for some annoying bits where she's like, "Oh my gosh there's a cute unconscious alien with us and he's hawt. I want him." Logic flees and she's so gobsmacked over some unconscious dude's good looks that she's irrational. It's all she thinks and talks about. She develops an obsession with this guy and when I read the blurb and some of the reviews of the next book and realized it's dedicated to their great love story I'm like yeah, thanks no. I was annoyed enough with her being like, "ooohhh, guy that's not even awake that I've never met. But he's soooo haaawwwttt I'm going to just devote my entire existence to him."
I did like the plot though and Nova. And Colonized was absolutely amazing. What's nice is you can just read the first book--or the first two and it's not like you have to read all three to get everything nicely wrapped up.
I must clearly be crazy to read this book. Why? Because I’m arachnophobia, which means I’m afraid of spiders (deathly afraid). Yet here I am, reading a book that contains giant ass spiders and loving it! Haha. Though the giant alien spiders aren’t just that, spiders, they’re mutant spider bodies are combined with another element and it was quite the surprise. Loved it!
You’re probably wondering why I read a book that has giant ass spiders written into it if I’m deathly afraid of them? Well for one, I absolutely love this series! Two, I love Aubrie Dionne and I will jump through hoops (or face my fears) to read her Paradise series! It keeps me so interested and engaged that time flies by without me knowing, those kind of reads are exactly what I want when I’m busy and tired from school.
I enjoy how in each book in this series is based off a different characters point of view. Colonization was based off Annie (Andromeda, not a big fan of this name, quite the tongue twister) and this sequel was based off Nova, Annie’s archenemy. At first I couldn’t really tell the difference from their voices, even though Nova had strong feelings of hatred towards Annie, however as time went by I was able to tell them apart and get attached to Nova as I had gotten attached to Annie and her story. I’m very happy that Nova got what she wanted (not a spoiler, there’s many things she want’s, you’ll have to read to know what I’m talking about).
Reconnaissance starts off right where the first one ended, very little time has passed and that made the read so much more pleasing. And along with that, it isn’t long before the action starts and we’re sitting on the edge of our seats. This made me smile that I didn’t have to wait with the world building (nothing wrong with it, but sometimes when you’re tired it can become a chore) to get to the heart racing and intense scenes. And they were intense! Mrs. Dionne definitely had the hairs on my arms stand on end. Got chills running down my spine throughout the read!
Overall I couldn’t put down this book and when I did, I couldn’t wait to get back to it. At first I didn’t know where this was going or how this one and the first one worked together but at the end I was able to see a bigger picture. I’m hoping to god it doesn’t end with the next one! I can see this series going more than three books.
Reconnaissance is an action packed, spine chilling read that’ll have the hairs on the back of your neck standing up, with a heartwarming romance that shows us that sometimes we are allowed second chances.
Reconnaissance begins at the award ceremony.. However, it is not Andromeda we follow in this story it's Nova. They survived the microbes but these poor survivors from Earth can't seem to get a break. This time it's Nova that makes the discovery. This story goes into depth about Nova's life, and even while still in the beginning, you begin to understand why she's pushed herself all those years and why she resents Andromeda so much. If the reader disliked Nova in Colonization, they'll have an annoying feeling of guilt once they start learning about miss prim and proper. Andromeda in this story, is much different than she was in Colonization. She's no longer the love sick little girl chasing after her best friend. Now, she's more adult in her ways, especially her thinking. I was impressed with her choice of the team, especially with the fact that excluded herself and Corvus from it. This story definitely doesn't lack in action department from the beginning there's plenty of action as Nova, Sirius, and the others face a new threat to their new colony on Paradise 21. All in all this book was lot more action packed than Colonization. I hope Aubrie continues with the series. There's a small unresolved issue which leads me to know there will be at least one more book to follow this series if not more. I give this book 5 of 5 paws
If you haven’t read the first there is a brief little bit at the beginning of the book, and throughout, explaining what happened. However, there isn’t enough to really go into the relationship between Andromeda and Sirius, so I definitely recommend reading the first before delving into this one.
That said, if you have read the first but it’s been awhile, Aubrie does have bits and pieces that will help jog your memory. I did not have to go back and read book one and it has been a few months since I read it. I remembered everything as we get into hearing Nova’s side of things.
And at first I was curious and a bit taken aback that this was about Nova. I loved book one and I was so excited to read more and to start reading and seeing Nova’s perspective almost threw me off, but not enough, I just plunged ahead and I become more and more interested in this other side of things. It’s not like it’s book one all over again though! This is a completely new story with bits and pieces of how Nova feels towards Sirius and how Nova thinks Andromeda keeps getting in her way of what she’s been working for her entire life.
The entire story was fabulous. When you get to the alien ship, oyyyy!!! There were so many parts that just made me cringe! Which of course I LOVED! It’s a bit on the horrorific side, but given that they are inside an alien ship, I suppose that is to be expected! Plus the fact that there is so much about Nova that we find out while she’s fighting for her life, but it all makes sense. And at the end I really liked Nova just as much as I like Andromeda. Loved every word of this book. Although this ends without any further questions, I am really hoping that Aubrie is going to write a book three. I want to know more about this colony and their struggles.
This was an amazing sequel. The story has a lot of classic science fiction elements paired with a great cast of main characters. Book one flows directly into book two with a shift in perspectives from Andromeda to Nova - rivals since school. There is a hint of a love triangle - but it dissolves very quickly and is more of a school age crush finally ending than anything.
Most of the story takes place on the alien ship that Nova has discovered hanging out nearby. These aliens are not nice creatures. They were written brilliantly and gave me the heebie-jeebies everytime that skittered (yes, they skitter) into a room or scene. There was quite a bit of suspense as Nova and Sirius explore the ship and I loved every word of it.
The romance was really on the back burner most of the time. I knew it was there hovering in the background waiting for the right time to pop up again. It was nice not having teenage love shoved in my face every few minutes. I would highly recommend this to any sci-fi YA lovers out there.
Aliens cause trouble,so Nova,Sirius's life mate,is going to a mission to save the day, will it save her love life too?
I honestly didn't like Nova in the first book, she was a cocky, arrogant girl, not very likeable, But in this book I really related to her,she is more realistic than Andromeda, she works hard to get what she wants and doesn't think anything is granted. The plot isn't much different, except there is a bit more action in this book, yet, this book is so much better than the first book, and I really liked it!
It is the mark of a great writer to make me dislike a character so much in one novel and then understand that person in the next. Great work, as always! I can't seem to get enough of Ms. Dionne's novels! I highly recommend her work.
