"L'elitrottolo precipitò per due, tre chilometri e, mentre le minuscole isole scivolavano oltre il parabrezza, Valery teneva d'occhio il radar trattenendo il fiato. Ne bastava solo una, un'isola grande come un pugno. Si sarebbe schiantata contro il tondo dell'elitrottolo trapassandolo da parte a parte. Per Valery non ci sarebbe stato scampo. Poteva solo affidarsi alla fortuna. Continuò a precipitare. Un frammento colpì l'elica, facendole perdere l'assetto, e Valery si ritrovò a testa in giù. Afgelopen woensdag heb ik mijn nog te lezen kast uitgeruimd en opnieuw ingericht. Allereerst omdat ik graag de boeken waarvan ik eigenlijk al zeker weet dat ik ze toch nooit meer ga lezen eruit wilde halen (en wilde doneren aan mijn nichtje), maar ook om de kast weer eens zo in te delen dat ik de boeken die ik wel snel wil lezen hopelijk wat makkelijker terug kan vinden. Ik kwam de eerste twee delen in deze serie dus opnieuw tegen. En ik had eigenlijk wel zin erin te duiken.
Dit boek paste in elk geval helemaal in mijn straatje en had werkelijk alles wat ik tof vind aan Dystopia en Sci-Fi! Er was ongelooflijk veel aandacht voor de wetenschap en ik vind het ook echt ongelooflijk tof dat we de verklaring van waarom de wereld geworden is hoe hij geworden is niet zomaar voorgeschoteld krijgen. Er wordt onderzoek gedaan, zowel voor het gebeurt als erna en ik ben heel benieuwd waar het heen gaat.
Daarnaast vond ik de toekomst die in deze wereld geschetst werd op een onwaarschijnlijke manier ergens nog heel waarschijnlijk. Ja, wat er met de wereld gebeurd is, klopt aan de ene kant niet met de natuurwetten die wij momenteel hanteren, maar juist omdat ook de personages dat probleem benoemen en proberen te achterhalen hoe en waarom, voelt het toch realistisch. De tekeningen middenin het boek zorgen ervoor dat de wereld nog net wat extra tot leven komt.
Ten slotte was ik positief verrast door de personages, hun ontwikkeling en de manier waarop de verschillende verhaallijnen met elkaar verbonden zijn en worden. Hier en daar stonden er wat rare beschrijvingen in van de vrouwelijke karakters (mannen en hun fascinatie voor borsten...), maar gelukkig betekende dat niet dat de vrouwen verder onrealistisch of betekenisloos waren. Integendeel. Ik ben enorm nieuwsgierig hoe het verhaal verder gaat en wat we nog allemaal gaan ontdekken!

Primo libro della trilogia di Skyland e collegata alla serie animata franco-canadese omonima messa in onda su Nickelodeon tra il 2005 e il 2007.
Una forte cesura rispetto al cartone animato sembra essere il target del prodotto, in questo caso più ricco di linguaggio colorito e sparsi momenti di nudità, spesso gratuita (già dall'incipit).
Ho comprato questo libro una decina di anni fa attratto dalla copertina, illustrata in modo simile alla mia serie di libri preferita da ragazzo, la saga di Ulysses Moore. In più è presente qualche pagina di artwork veramente ben fatti che immaginano il mondo post-apocalittico del libro.
Ad una prima lettura, il me adolescente trovò tematiche mature e un worldbuilding promettente a tinte vagamente steampunk, ma abbandonò la lettura dopo pochi capitoli.
Rileggendolo oggi capisco perché. Mi sono ancora evidenti le potenzialità dell'ambientazione immaginata dall'Autore, tuttavia esse non vengono sfruttate a dovere, e rimangono sfondo bidimensionale di altrettanti personaggi bidimensionali.
Le tematiche inserite nel libro richiedono una conoscenza scientifica base... che l'Autore non ha. Per non citare i grossolani errori come litri e kg di acqua che non corrispondono, oppure l'acqua che si dovrebbe ottenere bruciando la carta, sono usate frequentemente parole tecniche (es. "biometrico", "genetico", "psicrometrico") in maniera impropria, o elencate insieme a loro sinonimi per il solo scopo di impressionare il lettore. Ho invece apprezzato i neologismi, quasi dannunziani, usati per gli strumenti inventati di sana pianta: molto evocativi e azzeccati (es. "Elitrottolo").
Il libro - pur buttandosi maldestramente nel fantascientifico di lontana derivazione steampunk - non vuole rinunciare all'elemento magico (chiamato semplicemente "Potere"), che caratterizza la storyline a mio avviso più debole e ingenua delle tre presentate nel libro.
Difficilmente si empatizza con i vari protagonisti, che non evolvono e cambiano al massimo caratterizzazione per esigenze di trama.
La conclusione è volutamente a cliffhanger per invogliare - con poco successo - alla lettura del secondo volume, che è recensito come peggiore di questo e che dunque non penso leggerò.
Un vero peccato: questo libro è un'occasione sprecata per creare una saga interessante e innovativa di fantascienza per adolescenti.
Non ne consiglio la lettura vista la abbondante disponibilità di libri di fantascienza per ragazzi (e non) disponibile al giorno d'oggi: di sicuro si può trovare di meglio.

I would give this book 3.5 stars
I absolutely loved the steampunk setting and cuz of that the author was able to get away with a lot hahaha. I found it hard imagining everything as this book wasn't as descriptive as it could've been and i think that lead to a not so good execution. I feel like it lacks some explaining - it's unknown where certain stuff came from.
Long story short i'm not sure i'll continue the series or on the very least i won't spend money on it. If the library has the rest i might attempt ignoring the bad reviews i heards. Yeah no promises, we'll see.

Pretty good, actually. Don't know if it's just me and my liking of sci-fi, but this book left me CRAVING for the second one. Unfortunately, the books seem to be published in Brazil in an annual basis (and I'm thankful just for them being here, because I wanted to read them for ages)and the first was published on May, I think. So, yeah, 6 months until the next one :/

The idea of the book is pretty interesting but I had a feeling that the writer was in a rush to write this book. The scenes were not complex at all and I felt like I didn't know the characters because there were no important dialogues. As the story progressed,it became more detailed, which I liked, but it still isn't my favourite book, because it feels kind of amateur.

Fino a metà del libro ero tentato di abbandonarlo; poi, però, la storia ha avuto una svolta, coinvolgendomi maggiormente. I personaggi non sono ben caratterizzati psicologicamente: voglio dire, tolti alcuni tratti "base", essi sono grossomodo piatti; sì, è vero, personaggi come Valery mutano atteggiamento, ma il mutamento avviene praticamente dal nulla, non c'è una vera e propria gradazione.
La storia è interessante: siamo nel 2251. Da un paio di secoli la Terra ha cessato di esistere, frammentandosi in isole sparse nel cielo. Nessuna ha idea di come ciò sia possibile, poiché chiaramente contrario alle leggi della fisica. Eppure...
La frammentazione - e la nascita di Skyland - ha però portato grossi problemi, primo tra tutti la scomparsa del ciclo dell'acqua, poiché si sono estinti mari, fiumi e laghi. Inoltre, si sono venute a creare due caste: quella dei Seijin, superiore perché dotata di alcuni poteri, e quella dei jijen, la casta degli inferiori, dei servi.
Valery, una Sejin, e Lorenzo, un jijen, incroceranno le proprie strade, quando una serie di eventi porterà inevitabilmente a dover fare fronte comune.

The cover of the book is marvelous and the steampunk setting is interesting to say the least. But I just couldn't get over some of the flaws of this book.
At the start of the story, we 're introduced to José and his son Lorenzo carrying a water condensator containing ca. 200 liters of water. But based on the book, it 'd only weigh 50 kg. That's not how that works. 1 Liter of water amounts to 1 kg. Point. Silly mistake in my opinion. I also cound't imagine a government so cruel and stupid that they would rather try to cover up the life-jeopardizing dangers and accidents involving ALFA-12 and threaten scientists - like Lily Carlyle - who want to warn the common people. On the other hand, the fact that Lily Carlyle is more inclined to keep her data on the ALFA-12 research a secret and deliberately chooses to not tell any media outlet about it, even when she technically had the chance, doesn't make her that much brighter.

Es un buen libro, ofrece un mundo novedoso lleno de cosas desconocidas y maravillosas. Es una lastima que el libro terminé en lo que bien puede ser la mitad de la historia.

Skyland is een wereld die reeds bekend is van de gelijknamige tekenfilmserie op Nickelodeon. Sinds april 2011 is Baeckens Books Nederland bezig om een YA-boekenreeks – geschreven door David Carlyle – onder deze naam uit te brengen.

Het is het jaar 2251. De achttienjarige Lorenzo en zijn vader zijn waterzoekers. Om een schuld af te lossen moeten ze in korte tijd duizend liter bij elkaar zoeken, maar in Skyland is dat een moeilijke opgave. Doordat de aarde enkel uit zwevende brokstukken bestaat, zijn de zeeën, meren en rivieren verdwenen. Bovendien valt er weinig regen.
Valerie is een zestienjarige seijin, een superieur mensenras dat door zonlicht bovennatuurlijke krachten krijgt. Ze wordt op het instituut van Nieuw Oxford opgeleid en het leven is daar kil. Vriendschappen zijn verboden, terwijl vijandigheid hoogtij viert.

De wereld, waarin het verhaal zich afspeelt, is even groots als in de tekenfilmserie. Overal in de lucht hangen brokstukken van de aarde. Op sommige kun je meerdere dagmarsen lopen, op vele kan een volwassen man nog niet eens rustig zitten. Doordat de brokstukken op verschillende hoogtes zweven, krijgt de wereld een extra dimensie en je kunt bijna de vliegtuigen door het luchtruim horen bewegen.
Het is een wereld waarin je zou willen verdwalen als het water- en machtsprobleem er niet was. Zelfs na het lezen van het boek kun je nog urenlang in Skyland ronddwalen, je afvragend hoe jouw omgeving eruit zou zien en waar jij in de wereld zou staan.

I picked the book up in my local library because the interesting premise and the beautiful cover. The story takes place in a future were the world exist of larger and smaller fragments of the crust of the earth floating into the air. No one knows why this happened but because of it water has become a scarce and very valuable commodity. It is in this setting that the three very different main characters discover not to take anything for granted, the society they live in is not as clear cut as it seems and if they want to survive it is time for them to start thinking independently and take matters into there own hands.
I must say that I like the idea of the book more than the actual story. I had some trouble to empathize with the main characters, they seemed slightly two-dimensional to me. The story itself was okay but has been done before. So all in all it was okay but not a great read!

Islas en el cielo es un libro que parte de una original y novedosa idea, pero que podría haber dado más de sí, si estuviera contada con más calma, más detalles y descripciones. La falta de información en libros que nos invitan a entrar a un mundo totalmente desconocido y nuevo para nosotros, es un gran error y hace que en ocasiones nos perdamos y no extrañemos de lo que está ocurriendo. Esto ocurre en este caso, pero por lo menos, me ha dejado intrigada el final y seguramente acabe leyendo su segunda parte (que de grosor es más extensa, esperemos que el autor se extienda también más en su labor).

L'idea iniziale non è male... provare ad immaginare cosa potrebbe accadere al nostro pianeta continuando a sfruttarlo selvaggiamente. L'idea ecologista è un ottimo monito per le giovani generazioni per evitare un futuro apocalittico. Mi hanno deluso però i molti, troppi interrogativi lasciati senza risposta. Che il finale aperto stia a significare una seconda pubblicazione? Sinceramente non mi aspettavo che l'ultima pagina fosse l'ultima. Belle le illustrazioni a chiusura del libro che ritraggono Skyland.

I liked this book very much.
Too bad it has a continuasion and I cant buy it in our local store yet. sigh
The main story is very interesting. It is written so scientifically I can even imagine that this can happen to humanity.
I like the main characters, and I so wanna know their future adventures.
Also I really loved the pictures, paintings of the world in the back of the book. The color, the details which really helped me get in deep in to the world of the book.
Hope I can read the second volume in the future :)

Es sinceramente un libro DEMASIADO bueno. Tiene un muy buen argumento, te enganchas con los personajes desde su primera aparición, nos hace tomar conciencia, sinceramente es un libro que yo absolutamente recomiendo. <3
