As they continue to tour across Japan, Youko and Airi take in the sites of a land that’s been ravaged by an apocalyptic event. But the real danger might turn out to be something that’s been around a lot longer than they have…
The slice of life aspects of this series remain fun - Youko and Airi are affable tour guides for all of Japan, filtered through the lens of whatever mishap has left it decayed and crumbling into ruin with nobody else around.
They basically go around having adventures while espousing the many virtues of wherever they end up. It’s very cute and the art is equally so, but also has some phenomenal depth to it when it comes to backgrounds.
There are definitely some real weird turns here, but mostly we stay the course and I love the minimalist storytelling of old evacuation signs and such just tucked away in the scenery like little breadcrumbs.
Much like Otherside Picnic, this does a great job of conveying a world that is very beautiful, but also ready to harm you at a moment’s notice. That title definitely has a more sinister bent, but this one also shows the danger that can crop up when nature begins to reclaim society.
This is especially true at the end, which really shakes the narrative up in some crazy, yet very believable, ways. I really enjoyed how that threat grew out of something beautiful, yet not to be messed with. It shows what can happen even if you are paying attention.
Not to mention that other reveal, but spoilers and all that.
4 stars - really fun companions and gorgeous scenery make this the equivalent of a manga road trip, which is exactly the vibe it’s going for. Now with a little more mystery to raise the eyebrows at for next time.
So cute ends on a cliffhanger I definitely can’t wait to read volume five this is a good combination of a cute traveling story but it doesn’t shy away with the destruction of the apocalypse I thought the alien thing that was a little weird but are there in that I really enjoyed it.
Youko and Airi are in the Oarai area wishing the ferry still ran to Hokkaido. They take a famous roadway, visit a strange old tomb area, and find a portal that takes them to a very unusual place.
This ramps up the scifi elements (beyond just the post-apocalyptic landscape and android character...) and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger when they venture too close to an active volcano... I love the virtual tour of Japan Youko and Airi give us through their adventures.
Notes on content: Language: None Sexual content: One scene in which the girls are in bikinis, nothing further. Violence: One person passes out. Deaths of other people are evident but the girls don't stumble across corpses or anything. Ethnic diversity: Japanese LGBTQ+ content: None specified Other: The exploration of the tombs gets a touch creepy.
I've been waiting for something like this to happen in the story, and it ended on a cliffhanger!! I didn't expect it to happen now. I need to know more!!
Continue to obsess over this series and enjoy the company the two girls keep with each other as they tour Japan after an apocalypse seeing sites that have been completely ruined by no human habitation and whatever happened to bring about the end of the world. However, the girls have their trusty motorbike and a willing adventurous spirit to explore, even checking off items on their tourgram and introducing American readers to beautiful spots across Japan including aquariums, mountaintops, and arenas.
This volume takes two major tonal detours from the laid back, post-apocalyptic slice of life travelogue I've come to expect from this book. One is more believable and less jarring than the other, and serves as a serious cliffhanger. The other is in the middle and feels like it was dropped in from a totally different book. I feel like the next volume could be totally different, and I'm not sure that I'm excited about that. I've been loving this series exactly as it is.
I wasn’t that crazy about the places we visited in this volume… but the plot is thickening, and the world Airi and Youko are traveling through may be much bigger than we initially thought!! I love the mystery and unknown element, and the way it feels like we’re learning things at the same speed as our protagonists.
