Witch Atelier is a fantasy manga series teeming with positivity about the power of magic in the world to do good. Of course, it is also used to do damage, but the central group of young people here, developing into full-blown witches, are do-gooders, mostly, though they do screw up once in a while, encountering the dark side. They have mainly, for nine or ten volumes here, been kinda just taking their time, going to festivals, learning their chops, until this volume, where the intensity seems to be building toward something, hopefully. A kind of transition, set-up volume, but the elements seem to be here to move to some resolution, some set of encounters between the witch hats and the brimmed hats, among other factions.
Coco is such a great MC, so likable and smart, questioning the sort of good-evil binary assumptions about different kinds of magic she sees and considers. I like her relationship with Agott. Prince Eoleo Ezrest shows up; can we trust him? Dagda has a forbidden magic rune on his chest, a counterclock seal; interesting. A transitional volume, with more energy than usual.
Eisner-award-winning artwork from mangaka Shirahama continues, deepens. Look at that lovely cover!
Even if you took away the intricate art and fantastic worldbuilding, you'd still have a story that does an excellent job exploring questions of right and wrong based on fear. The adults are so enmeshed in the problems of the past that they can't see that they're ruining the future.
This series remains as visually stunning as ever but I'm struggling with how every single book expands the cast. There are so many characters now that I don't care about that much, and have trouble remembering from volume to volume. I wish the story line would stick more closely to Coco, her classmates, and their main mentors!
5 ⭐️ oh the collateral damage in this one broke my heart. The plot is really kicking in and I am worried for poor Coco and crew, and also very sad I now have to wait with everyone else for volume 11.
A lot of the manga series I'm deep into right now seem to be on the slow and sleepy side. This one tries to throw in some exciting elements and offers a little progress, but so much of it just seems to be the regular cast hanging out at a festival, nattering or emoting at each other. It all looks very nice, but I'm bored and finding it harder to care about what the end game might be here.
This volume really both made my mind spin and tugged at my heartstrings. A lot of that reaction has to do with how this has built up on certain conflicts in the series, and also just how invested I am in the characters.
Y MUCHA VISIBILIDAD, as always.
Coco and Tartah both want to help Custas from driving further onto the wrong path. However, the Brimmed Hats have him tight in their grasp with a promise of destroying the ancient parameters of magic. Now both will have to seek an audience with the King in order to save Dagda. He may be the only one who can save Dagda, but the King is far more powerful than they would ever expect. Meanwhile, Prince Eoleo Ezrest is now Tetia's friend, but has ulterior motives she may never foresee. Agott wants to impress her mother in the procession but instead learns a valuable lesson from Qifrey and Olruggio. Coco is caught in the middle, in her morals and the life she thought she always wanted.
If you want my advice, take a quick jaunt down a myriad of paths rather than stubbornly sticking to one. That way, when you return to the starting point, you'll find you've got a whole new slew of new tools to work with." -Olruggio to Richeh I ran in the cold at night to retrieve this book from my mail box with my little brother. Witch Hat Atelier is currently my favorite series of all time. I was so excited to get my hands on volume 10 and instantly went to my room and read this manga. I am sad that this volume is shorter than the others, but it definitely didn't fall short of the other volumes' glory.
I have read so many disappointing anticipated series, and I am confident that this volume wouldn't disappoint. Although it didn't, I still enjoyed some of the other volumes better. Vol 10 managed to transport me to another world like it always did. The plot is one of my favorites, although the series may seem generic (wizards, witches, humans vs witches) Kamome Shirahama makes the story so much more complex.
The cover is absolutely gorgeous! The mangaka of this manga is skilled at illustration. The art is always detailed to another level, and the whimsical atmosphere of this story always hits the mark. Witch Hat Atelier is my favorite manga art style I've seen so far. Not only does this manga manage to have gorgeous art, but it tells a beautiful story.
We re-enter the serious topics with our young characters. This manga alternates perspectives. I enjoyed watching Agott dealing with simply being imperfect, and exploring her magical abilities and boundaries more. I love watching Richeh explore her different passions. Tetia was friendly as always and formed more friendships. Custas is one of my favourite characters, someone who was forced into a situation where he made a choice that will forever change his relationship with Coco and Tartah.
Would I be correct in assuming that you don't believe an everday contraption . .. is a particularly useful measure of a witch's true abilities? I cannot argue that a flickering of an ordinary lantern draws far less attention than a serpent of flame sent soaring int he sky. And a simple vapor bubble, quietly collecting moisture for us to drink and wash . . . is not nearly as imposing as a great funnel of water that reaches the clouds. But I suspect in our current era of peace. . . the serpent and vortex will find minimal use compared to the lantern and the bubble. In exposing her work to the eyes of the masses, a witch must be less concerned in what she can cast . . . and more mindful of what she cannot. I won't dismiss your desire for vindication. But I would urge you that the moment you lose sight of what you create . . . you risk becoming entangled in the desires who would use you to their own end." -Qifrey to Agott
Coco is a fantastic protagonist. Her journey is breath-taking and heartfelt. Coco is someone who starts out innocent and more simple-minded. However, as she grew and developed, her view on her world changed to something more complex and pained. Coco goes through a lot as she views everything happening around her from a fresh perspective that differed from those who were human or witches. The connections that Coco makes in the story were fantastic. She realized many things. . . was she so different from their enemies? Are the rules actually right if they do not benefit everyone?
These are realizations that everyone might make in life, and these are the ones that I love to see the most in books. I crave complex characters, spectacular world-building, and a complex antagonist. The thing about the antagonists is that they are humane too, and their decisions in actions in retrospect are not as different from the Knights Moralis and other witches as everyone believes. The antagonists were written to be understandable too, and Coco was written as a center-figure to see and understand both opposing sides.
Where this story strays from typical good vs evil is that there are several sides that are all intricately connected. We get to see the perspective of the Brimmed Hats, Knights Moralis, Witch Apprentices, Leaders of the Country, Kings, and the humans/people. I enjoyed the mix of action, emotion, and heart in this volume. My only critique would be that I hope that certain plot lines could be re-explored or concluded.
He's just like me. He's doing exactly what I did. he reached out and grasped the pen . . .without any of the knowledge . . . without anyone or anything to steer him from tragedy. Just like me. If I'd known the counterclock seal . . . I would have used it too. . .the day I turned my mother to stone. I would've reached for the solution in front of my eyes. Without knowing or caring about its price or its horror. Good magic can harm . . . just as herbs become poison in unskilled hands." -Coco to Custas
This volume brings a lot of darkness and questioning of rules, from most of the characters. Coco saying she's seen the darkness and knows that people live there... dang. We also see the price of forbidden spells, or regular spells when applied to a person. This is such a great series with lots of nuance.
