I really did enjoy this book and found myself caught up at times so much that I did not want to tear my eyes away. So, I give it a solid 3 stars because even though I did enjoy the book I took issue with a few things and maybe I was expecting a full-length novel when this was only meant to be a novella. Even in spite of that, K.A. Young has a great writing style and I will indeed read book 2 and more by her. am just hoping they won’t all be so fast paced.
In Prophecy of the Female Warrior, K.A. Young did not waste time with a lot of trivial nonsense. The book opens with the protagonist, Anna/Annabelle, preparing for her husband, Joe’s funeral with the assistance of her sister, Julie. Shortly after the funeral the story is kicked into high gear and kept on climbing. There never appeared to be a balance or steady even pace, which is not a good thing, but definitely not a bad thing.
When Anna approached the large stranger at the cemetery after the burial, I found that to be a little unbelievable only because how many women approach strange men when they are quite a ways from anyone who may help them in case trouble ensued? The way she could barely tear her gaze from him was just rather fast for me seeing as though she buried her husband only moments before even seeing the large man.
My second area of concern was how quickly Dan, her brother-in-law made a move on her when his brother had not been dead for even two weeks. Do men really carry on that way? I felt like she should have been able to truly have a good amount of time to grieve before forming any new attachments or attractions to anyone but that did not happen here. As you read the book you will see that she was a hot little number and controlling her lusts was not something that was too easy for her, even though she just buried her husband of 10 years.
Anna embraced accepting who she was and the fact that she was actually from another world way too quickly. Also, learning about who the strange man was, why he was watching her and about the yetzer hara and the other dangers that were lurking around what seemed to be every corner all happened at lightening speed. Yes, she did offer slight protests and even questioned herself from time-to-time, but she still kept on rolling with it was not the most believable.
What I loved about the book was that it was filled with action and you could not get bored. It was definitely a quick and easy read, which is probably the issue for me. While I enjoyed the white-hot passion and sizzling love scenes, I only wish the pace was a little slower, more like a gradual buildup to an exploding climax. Instead, I felt like I was on a whirlwind speed-reading trip.
I do believe that K.A. did a good job in fleshing out the main characters, but I would have loved to know more about the secondary characters like Elise, Van and Torch. They played a huge role in the book. And what happened to her sister, Julie? The way Anna just let the relationship with her sister sort of fall to the wayside was not something I can see happening. They were very, very close and you don’t just walk away from that no matter what. She could still embrace who she really was while having a relationship with Julie. How does one just let that slip?
Maybe the next book will offer a more moderate pace. I am looking forward to reading it.
