The DASH Diet for Beginners Essentials to Get Started

Rate this book
Do you know why the DASH diet is voted the "Best Diet" year after year?

It's simple: The DASH diet is an easy and sustainable tool for creating a healthful lifestyle.

Based on research by the National Institutes of Health, and chosen by U.S. News & World Report as its number-one choice in Best Diets Overall, Best Diets for Healthy Eating, and Best Diabetes Diets, the DASH diet rises above the noise of the gimmicky weight-loss plans.

Created as a way for people with high blood pressure to enjoy the foods they love while working to reduce or correct their hypertension, the DASH diet uses healthful food choices, along with more nutritious ways to prepare favorite dishes, to allow people to eat a varied, delicious, and balanced diet.

And although it wasn't created as a weight-loss diet, the DASH diet often does result in weight loss, which is a huge benefit to those who have diabetes or high blood pressure, or are at high risk of developing either disease.

In The DASH Diet for Beginners, best-selling health and nutrition author John Chatham provides a straightforward approach to losing weight, reducing hypertension, and improving overall cardiovascular health. More than just a brief overview of the DASH diet, The DASH Diet for Beginners compiles everything you need to know to get started on a healthful new lifestyle.

* 40 delicious and DASH-approved recipes include low-sodium versions of your favorite foods, from Creamy Spinach Dip and Beef Tostadas to Blackened Salmon Filets and Chocolate Strawberry Mousse.

* DASH Diet for Beginners outlines much more than just the basic essentials to get started; it includes DASH diet guidelines and health benefits, scientific studies, a
DASH diet foods list, and a healthy fitness and meal plan.

* The Seven-Day DASH Diet Meal Plan provides an easy guide to jumpstart your health and weight loss.

Lose weight, improve your health, and reduce your risk of heart disease with John Chatham's The DASH Diet for Beginners.

This is a basic outline for the DASH diet. The DASH diet is recommended mainly for those who have high blood pressure, or those at risk for developing high blood pressure. It is also recommended for those with metabolic syndrome or prediabetes. This is not a diet you use for a few weeks or months in order to lose a few pounds, although it can aid in weight loss, rather it is a guide to healthier habits for a healthier, leaner you for the rest of your life.

The DASH diet uses lower sodium, high fiber, lower sugar intake and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits to assure that all the important nutrients are included in your regular diet.

This book includes 40 recipes for:
Snacks
Breakfast
Lunch
Dinner
Dessert

It also outlines a 7 day meal plan and 7 day workout plan that is very doable.

The recipes are simple and tasty, and far better than trying to lower sodium intake by eating those tasteless "low sodium" processed products like canned soups.

I borrowed this book on my library's Hoopla app to get started with the DASH diet as I learn to follow this way of eating because I must limit my sodium intake to below 2000mg as my body heals from open heart surgery which replaced my aortic valve. It was easy to start this diet because I had little appetite while my body detoxified from the anesthesia and pain medications. Applesauce and oatmeal was enough of a choice at the beginning. As my appetite increased after I returned home, my husband learned that "What ever you want to cook" has always been a lousy answer to the cook's question, "What do you think we should have for our next meal?" Chapter 11 has a 7-day menu to help you start deciding what you want to cook.
This book has a list of food which are allowed and not allowed to help make a grocery list to replenish a pantry. There are 4 chapters of new-to me recipes: appetizer and snack; breakfast; lunch; dinner; and dessert.
I recommend this book to all readers. This way of eating has been good for us.

I'm a little skeptical of a diet that recommends flavored yogurt (loaded with added sugar), but there were some good recipe ideas, and the diet foundation was well-explained.

Surprised

Interesting and enlightening, although some of the recipes I wouldn't eat no matter what. However, there were many I would enjoy. Also a good beginning on a healthier path of living. Will invest in a few more DASH recipe books.

A tasty intro

This is a great easy to digest intro to the DASH eating plan. The basics are covered well and the recipes make you want to dive right in. If you haven't eaten this way before the addition of a quick seven day plan encourages you to give it a try.

A nice, basic introduction to the DASH diet. I haven't had to try some of his recipes but I will. A good start to changing your diet and managing your blood pressure.
