Disclaimer: I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review. My review was not required to be positive. All thoughts and opinions expressed below are entirely my own.
My mom was diagnosed with celiac disease recently. Yeah, what are the odds that she's one of the people who actually can't have gluten for health reasons? And boy does she miss it - sometimes to the point that she will sneak a roll or pizza despite knowing that it will make her sick later.
On average, each recipe contains 5-10 ingredients and around 5 detailed instructions. There are multiple flavor options provided for the recipes so you can pick a taste you enjoy. The ingredients are pretty easy to find, but I do recommend making your own gluten-free breads from scratch (the process is also described in this book) as store-bought items are often costly and nasty.
This book has plenty of delicious recipes, although I would have liked to see more options from the "non-classy" side of breakfast - I have no clue what strata is but it can't replace my love for breakfast sandwiches and burritos.
Its that time again where I get obsessed with cookbooks!!!! And netgalley has quenched my need and rocked it! This review covers Gluten free- breakfast/brunch and beyond… 4 free stars I do not have a gluten allergy but I have a fat kid allergy where I love to eat and want to be a bit healthier. This cookbook rocks because its bread but gluten free. I know I have tried using a few online recipes for soda muffins and pumpkin muffins so I am interested in how this will play out. Love the pictures included in this book. I am a sucker for recipes with pictures. Mine don’t always look as pretty but I feel like they cant be too bad if they look similar. My friend’s mom has Celiac so maybe we can learn together some new recipes and she can surprise her mom!
Some very nice GF ideas for brunch and dessert, though most of them aren't quite my idea of breakfast (tea/coffee cake for breakfast?! Probably not...). In fact, none of the coffee cake recipes appealed to me, most of them had just a bit too much sugar for my liking. That said, I really loved the section on waffles since they are among my favourite brunch and afternoon tea ideas! I made Amendt's sour cream waffles last night and ate almost the entire batch myself, loved them so much.... And the good thing is there are still a lot of waffle and French toast recipes to try out! :)
Her recipe for buckwheat pancakes is yum yum yum, too.
Title: Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond Author: Linda J Amendt Publisher: The Taunton Press Published: 9-3-2013 ISBN: 978-1-60085-712-6 Pages: 240 Genre: Food and Wine Tags: Cooking, Cookbooks
Finally a cookbook for my favorite meal anytime of day - Breakfast! Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond takes the time to discus the facts behind gluten-free and the basics of a gluten free kitchen. I could eat breakfast foods for all three meals of the day for seven days a weak and not be tired of breakfast for quite some times so I jumped at this cookbook. I was not disappointed.
If you want something simple and quick to eat on the go make one of the delicious muffin or bread recipes. Heat them up and grab a no spill glass of OJ or tea and hit the day at a run. My personal favorites were the Blueberry Muffins and the Applesauce Bread. Under biscuits and scones I made the Cranberry Orange Scones and the Cheddar Cheese Biscuits. My scones were great, but I am still batting 0 with biscuits. Next was my favorite section Pancakes and Crepes. Don't laugh but I made almost all of them over the last few weeks and did not find one my family did not like. Then we were off to the Waffles and french toast recipes. I have a fondness for citrus so I did the Orange Oven French Toast and because it sounded so tempting I did the Walnut raisin French Toast Strata on which I even ate a few of the Walnuts. Wish is saying something because my family knows I do not care for nuts (except the two legged kind.) I found a Sour Cream Coffee Cake that brought back the memories from my childhood. It was the closest to what I remember of my grandmother's sour cream coffee cake.
There is a recipe for raisin bread that when I made it tasted just like what my mother made for my father all my life. I marched on to the Frittatas and omelets with the Southwest Frittata and the Cheese Omelet. My family is not overly fond of quiches so I have yet to make something from that section. My last triumph in the kitchen using Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch and Beyond was Italian Sausage Stratta. You will find that there are few recipes in this cookbook that does not appeal to you and your family no matter how picky they are. I really did not notice any difference from gluten-free to the way I cook normally as for the taste. So now i can cook a little healthier without loosing flavor and so can you.
I've heard this craze over a gluten-free diet sweeping the nation. Not because of dietary needs but just because. So I decided to give this book a shot. I'm a huge gluten eater. Sorry, but I am. I love egg sandwiches in the morning, pb & j for lunch and rolls with my spaghetti dinner. So for me, this was the ultimate test.
I tried the Ranch Rolls (rolls made with ranch packet seasoning) and although they lacked the ranch flavor (the Mr. and I put ranch dressing ON the rolls themselves) the texture was that of a normal roll. Just wish that it had more of that ranch flavor to it.
Next up, I tried a banana nut muffin recipe on my mom when she came to visit. Now my family is always skeptical when I come home and say I'm going to cook them a meal. They claim I always cook some "funky shit", so my family is definitely not the hippie type. So with that being said, I figured she'd be even more judgmental than I am. Well, we wound up eating them for breakfast, snacks and desserts.
And lastly I tried the basic waffle recipe. Don't ask me why, but while I was at work I smelled maple syrup and instantly started craving waffles. Now mind you, I work at a National Park visitor center. Not overly sure where the maple syrup smell came from but I'm not questioning it because man were the waffles awesome. I was a little skeptical when I mixed the batter and it was very runny. However, what came out of the waffle iron was light and airy. The had a sweet vanilla flavor to them that I could see myself just putting some butter on them and calling it a day.
This is a great recipe book containing recipes for muffins, breads, waffles and coffee cakes. I like that right in the beginning it gives you a basic recipe for gluten-free AP flour which is basically used in all of the recipes. I still plan on trying out a few more because what I've tried have all turned out well, with the exception of the non-ranch tasting ranch rolls. I thought gluten-free was supposed to be gritty and tasteless but this was spot on with the normal stuff, and in some cases, like the waffles, even better. Who knows, I may just convert over to gluten-free with this book.
Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond By Linda J. Amendt
If Gluten-Intolerant-diagnosed thought Baked Goods were no longer available, think again! This Gem of a cookbook does more than list recipes; it has sections detailing what gluten is and where to find it in order to avoid it. It has sections on alternative flours to use and resources to buy them. Also, she has tips about leavening, sugars, and whatnot to make the recipes even better. Many of the recipes include pictures, which is extremely helpful to novice bakers/chefs. The recipes have clear, concise instructions without obscure ingredients. It makes Gluten free appetizing when so many other Gluten-free ready-made products are simply not. Linda Amendt includes tips for when you’re baking goes wrong or doesn’t have that exact desired effect; including mixing and baking techniques. She begins with quick breads and muffins that are sweet or savory. Then she moves on to biscuits and scones. In the pancake chapter, you wouldn’t think there’d be so many choices, but with 8 different recipes that could be customized the options are endless. The same goes for crepes, consider spinach mushroom or egg and cheese crepes for dinner with an accompanying side salad. Yum! Who said crepes had to be sweet? The next chapter is waffles and French toast (and strata). In chapter six its all about cake, coffee cake, that is. Chapter seven is yeast breads and sweet rolls; chapter eight frittatas and omelets; then to bring it home she ends with savory stratas. Before closing she adds how to convert favorite recipes to gluten-free and lists a substitution guide for dairy ingredients. A few years ago I became highly allergic to a number of foods, additives, medications, chemicals and many environmental toxins. Many of the additives in foods are harmful to our bodies, and mirror heart problems, among others. (have the tests to prove it). After suffering with years of pounding heart issues and anaphylaxis attacks (very scary), allergies, ear problems, headaches, while maintaining food journals, allergy doctor visits, tests, monitoring everything, and never leaving the house without an EpiPen – had all the doctors baffled and was totally frustrated.
I began reading everything I could find on the internet, researching tons of books about how foods affect your health and allergies. I immediately took control over my diet and eating habits. I have been a strict vegan for two or more years now (no dairy, or meats) with much success - feel great!
I contribute my success to my diet; therefore always in the market for good books and recipes, which assist with my limited and restricted diet. GLUTEN-FREE BREAKFAST, BRUNCH & BEYOND by Linda J. Amendt was outstanding! Not only is the book packaged with attractive photos, beautiful displayed page layout, quick tips, delicious gluten-free recipes, gluten-free ingredients, ingredients that contain gluten, how to convert your favorite receipts to gluten-free; it also is full of very informative and critical information about foods and ingredients.
Linda Amendt is an award winning author, an expert baker and her talent is reflective throughout this delicious and satisfying book, which gives you a variety of choices for gluten-free living. A book you will reference and keep on hand at all times, even when entertaining - Highly recommend! http://judithdcollins.booklikes.com/p...
A special thank you to Taunton Press and NetGalley for a complimentary reading copy, in exchange for an unbiased and honest review.
I would like to thank Taunton Press Inc for allowing me an ARC of this book for an open and honest review.
This is a great cookbook for those looking for some simple, easy and tasty ideas that are gluten free. Whether looking for themselves, their families or for friends who may have gluten intolerances or similar.
Positives of this book: some fantastic information on gluten free, hidden glutens, gluten free flours and so on. Gorgeous open, colourful and easy to read layout. I’m starting to get used to expecting such high quality books/ pictures/ layouts from Taunton Press and always look forward to reading something from them due to the quality of books they produce.
I loved the savoury strata section! There are definitely a few in there I want to try. Same with the waffles… Spinach waffles, yum!
The reason I ended up scoring this book as a 3 out of 5 is I, personally, didn’t get a lot of new stuff out of it. I’ve been wheat free for over ten years now (I have a wheat protein intolerance – among other food allergies and issues) and so had pretty much been there and done that with a lot of the recipes covered in it. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely some new versions that had me sit up and take notice (I’m looking at you pumpkin pancakes) but not enough for me to add it to my cook book collection.
But I’m not saying it’s not a great book – it is. It’s more I’m not the right person for it.
Would I recommend this book to people seeking a good gluten free cookery book? Yes, especially if you don’t already have that many gluten free books as this one would be a perfect start to your collection.
Would I buy it for myself? So very tempted… but I would need to get rid of some of my other gluten free books first. Hard decision.
This really is a terrific gluten free cook book and something I would recommend.
This awesome book was provided to be by NetGalley for my honest review so here it is:
I am not allergic to Gluten although I am sensitive to it and my son is Autistic so it doesn't really do great things for him either. When I saw this book I got very excited because I felt that breakfast was so limited without Gluten but Linda Amendt sure did blow that out of the water. There are a TON of awesome recipes in this book and I can't wait to make them all. I liked all of the in depth information she gave in regards to the ingredients and making your meals and kitchen Gluten free. There are a lot of variations for the recipes like fore example the Banana Nut Pancakes can turn into Banana Blueberry or Banana Spice or Tropical pancakes - YUM. I never thought that sweet rolls would be remotely good when you take the gluten out but I was wrong. There was also a lot of good info in the back about making your kitchen and recipes you already have gluten free.
A few things I wouldn't mind to be different: There were pictures but none of them said what they actually were and although it wasn't hard to guess I shouldn't really have had to guess. Maybe in print this wouldn't be an issue because the picture would be opposite the recipe but in my e-book copy it was annoying. I also would have appreciated for maybe a small picture of the finished product on the page - there was plenty of room - so I know what I'm making. I also would have liked Amendt to mention using coconut oil as a substitution item but it was no where to be seen.
Overall a great cookbook that I will be enjoying for some time to come!!
This book has pretty much everything you will ever need in terms of recipes for breakfast or brunch. Gluten free or not, these recipes are easy to follow and taste great. I was impressed by the quality of the photography, as well as the sheer number of recipes available in this book. It covers quick breads and muffins, biscuits and scones, waffles and French toast, coffee cakes, yeast breads and sweet rolls, frittatas and omelets, quiches, and savory stratas.
I found this cookbook to be simple to follow. The recipes don't have huge lists of ingredients, or complicated flour blends of items that no one has ever heard of. They're short, simple to follow, and taste like real food. Most recipes have under 10 ingredients, which is pretty good when making baked goods. There are recipes in here to please just about everyone, from kid-friendly muffins to more sophisticated stratas and scones.
I have to admit that I'm not always the most imaginative when it comes to breakfast foods, especially on busy mornings, so I found these recipes to be particularly useful for my family. Gluten free baking is often intimidating for people, but this cookbook takes the guesswork out of it with easy recipes that are suitable even for beginners.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from NetGalley & the publisher in return for an honest review.
I was very impressed with this recipe book. It not only provides 100 excellent recipes for gluten-free eating, but is also a treasure trove of information on the subject. I have been cooking gluten-free meals for my family for a number of years and thought I knew a fair bit about the subject, but there was quite a lot of information new to me.
The author has researched the best combination of rice flour, tapioca flour and potato starch to provide a close match to the taste and texture of wheat flour, but I confess that I also tried several of the recipes with a shop bought all-purpose gluten-free flour and still got excellent results.
With the exception of the section on omelettes and frittatas, that do not contain gluten, all the recipes are for items that would normally be taboo to people with gluten intolerances - breads, cakes and crepes are all covered, along with many other tasty foods that are now available to you. Although there are 100 actual recipes, each one offers a number of alternative versions, adding blueberries, nuts or syrup to produce even more choice.
As I write this I am enjoying the gluten-free banana-nut pancakes that I cooked earlier :) I reviewed this book for NetGalley and had to use an on-line version, but this is one book that I shall be ordering hot off the press. Highly recommended.
Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond is a good little reference book packed with recipes from breads and cakes to quiches, pancakes and waffles.
The book contains information on what everyday ingredients contain gluten as well as a section with help on how to convert your favourite recipes to gluten-free with advice on getting substitution amounts correct, which would be very useful for beginners.
In terms of the visuals the design is pleasant with an easy-to-read format and neutral colours. There are also quite a few full page colour images of the finished recipes which is something I personally really like to see in cookbooks.
Of course the recipes themselves are the most important thing and I’m pleased to say there were quite a few that caught my eye, in particular two cinnamon based ideas – Cinnamon Pecan Bread and Cinnamon Swirl Bread, both of which I plan to try making myself. As well as the basic step-by-step recipes some have ‘variation’ sections e.g – an icing recipe to go alongside the Cinnamon Swirl Bread, giving the reader ideas for customising the recipes to their own personal tastes.
This recipe book would be good for anyone looking to learn the basics of gluten-free baking and would be useful to have on hand for reference.
Full of lots of information right at the beginning of the book and a great tips section and introduction about what the book is about and why it's written. I found this really useful and helpful. I adored the amazingly good quality pictures and I liked how many of them they used of as I always like lots of pictures along with the recipes because it helps to know what it should look like and whether or not it actually would work for you I thought the recipes were simple and easy to follow, which means I could easily do then, as baking is not my cup of tea. My favourite section would have to be the biscuit and cake section as I haven't grown up at all and still love cake and biscuits for breakfast but now they're more healthier and better for you. There are lots of recipes in here that I wouldn't use but I like how there is a large mixture of recipes suitable for everyone. There are so many awesome ideas in Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond I know my Mum would love the quiche recipes and I think this would make an amazing birthday or Christmas present.
Overall I really liked this one and would happily buy it myself or for family and friends. The only downside is it's a little expensive in shops but may be cheaper on Amazon (I haven't looked there yet!)
I am looking into new recipes and found this cookbook as an option for a child who has bad allergies. If you are living the Gluten-Free life, you might want to try some of the breads, muffins, pancakes, waffles, and other breakfast items inside this cookbook.
To say I was stunned would be the honest thing to tell you. I fell in love with the orange cranberry muffin recipe. (I am a sucker for those flavors together.) Some other honorable mentions may be buttermilk biscuits, crepe batter, easy waffles, and there are so much more I do not have time to tell you!
This book is a total happy place for those avoiding the gluten. I was totally impressed because even a beginner could pick up this cookbook and be okay. It has recipes for making your own all purpose gluten-free flour and recommendations for leavening and more. This one is a keeper and a must have!
Linda Amendt is to be applauded for her experience and help with making these tasty, and simple to do items. Who knew changing your diet could be so easy? Thanks so much Linda!!

Neither my son nor I can eat gluten and one thing I’ve missed since my diagnosis are my breakfast breads like waffles, pancakes, biscuits, and French toast. I was excited to pick up this book which offers 100 recipes that can be enjoyed at breakfast, brunch or whenever.
The recipes are detailed yet seem easy to follow and include GF flour and batter variations with tips thru-out to aid in GF preparation.
The author describes the ingredients and what they do... for instance, she explains the differences in the thickening agents available to be used in GF foods.
Besides the items listed in the title, there are also pound and crumb cakes, frittatas, stratas and more.
I have to try the recipe for applesauce bread soon! I also want to try the recipe for pumpkin bread and corn muffins. The pictures for the walnut scones and the sweet potato biscuits and over French toast keep calling to me too :-)))
LOL! There are so many recipes that look delicious...
Disclaimer: This cookbook was provided through NetGalley for read-to-review. Breakfast is the one meal that I would usually skip because it wasn’t appealing to me. Being gluten-free, it was the same each day, but what I enjoyed with this cookbook is the variety of dishes that weren’t complex, but delicious, and everyone could love. There is a great introduction at the beginning of the book, with tips, resources, and information. The two basic flour recipes were useful, and easy to make so I can have them on hand for baking. There are recipes for everyone to try, and enjoy, while staying gluten-free. I particularly loved the muffins, while other family members devoured the quiche. It’s well-written and illustrated, with simple instructions that are easy-to-follow. This is a fantastic cookbook to have for the selection of breakfast, brunch, and sweet treat recipes that can be made, as well as the amount of information and tips that come along with it.
I find myself among a rising number of people who are choosing to follow a gluten-free diet as a healthy lifestyle. In Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond, I found a variety of gluten-free recipes for all of my family’s favorite breakfast foods. From quick breads, muffins, and biscuits to yummy pancakes, waffles, and coffee cakes. You will find that this collection of 100 recipes will bring breakfast back to your gluten-free table.. I found the recipes in Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond could be quick and easy to make. The recipe for homemade all-purpose flour was the basis for numerous batters and dough's. Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond was full of information you need about gluten-free ingredients. Each recipe chapter begins with tips I found very helpful. Beautiful, appetizing pictures make this a very nice recipe book. I was gifted a copy by The Taunton Press, Inc. through NetGalley for my honest opinion which I have given.
First thing I love about a cookbook is giving tips. I'm so mess with baking. I can't get thru pastry. So I found a courage and try one of recipes.
Corn Muffins.
There's a thing, I hate corn except popcorn. So I make the recipe anyway. And I found volunteer ( My Dear Mom ). She try because she love corn with anything. She's old and she said she never tasted anything like that... When she said something like that I got scared! OMG! So she said she like it :D After baking right my courage never dissapear again! Anyways I try a few recipe too. But I didn't get any pictures.
Funny thing I'm good at making waffles... also I learn interesting recipes in the book.second funny thing is I never be able to make waffles with chocolate. I haven't try this recipe yet but I'm gonna do as soon as possible.
Thank You --> NetGalley, Linda J. Ament and The Taunton Press, Inc.
I got this book free from net galley for their review program. I chose this one because my mother was recently diagnosed with diabetes and was told to cut breads out of her diet so I got his thinking about how she could eat pancakes for breakfast one morning. I haven’t actually tried the recipes and unlike in my cake book, I feel as though this book has “normal” aka easy to find ingredients which is very appreciative since I live in a pretty small town. Some of the things in the book I have never heard of though! Seriously wtf is a “strata”? I also feel like these recipes could be used in a non-gluten free way as well, which is handy.
Also, I totally feel where the author of this book is coming from! She mentions being allergic to tomatoes at introduction, well..I FEEL YA SISTER!
A good gluten-free cookbook that focuses on breakfast foods. The recipes all look rather tasty and I like that the flour blend is rather simple. I'd like to see how the recipes work with my favorite storebought blend. I loved that the author said that for dry GF baked goods to add a little more fat so that they don't turn gummy. Didn't know that. We're not ones who do reduced fat dairy anyway but it was nice to know that the added fat (butter, oil, sour cream) actually improves the end result. Can't wait to try it out.
The best thing about this cookbook is that it gives you recipes for creating your own gluten free flours to keep in your pantry. A lot the recipes can be served to the whole family. The only criticism I have is the authors mention of cornstarch. Only pure cornstarch is gluten free and most of the brands found at the market have other additives or can be contaminated. We haven't found one that does not upset my gluten intolerant family members and have totally cut it out. *ARC given.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This was pleasantly informative and full of ideas and great recipes. I would have liked if it used less processed sugar and maybe tried to simplify the recipes a bit but I do understand that baking gluten-free is a lot more difficult. The book is written for Americans so you'll need to arm yourself with conversion charts if you're not one.
I don't have to follow a gluten-free diet, but I am looking at ways to improve my health, and am trying to cut down on wheat and other grains. This book has lots of great information, and the recipes look wonderful. I'm stocking up on the required ingredients (not easy in a small Scottish village!) and plan to work my way through this.
I love breakfast foods and have been looking for recipes to make my faves in a gluten free way. These recipes are delicious and easy to follow. The couple that I've tried turned out great.
A must-have for breakfast loving, gluten-free living people
My daughter has celiac and this is a wonderful cookbook. I really liked that there was a lot of information about the background of eating gluten free. We tried a French toast and a muffin recipe already! The recipes are easy to follow and the pictures look yummy.
I received a digital copy of this book in exchage for an honest review.
this is goooooood. filled with delicious recipes (its hit or miss on if these are REALLY breakfast foods, rather than snack foods, but I digress) and great how to's and why it is's. definitely recommended.
The recipes in this cookbook look wonderful. The book is formatted well, easy to follow, and I especially liked the quick tips (for the breakfast-challenged!)
