Dorkius Maximus #1

Diary of Dorkius Maximus

Rate this book
Dorkius Maximus is a young boy growing up in ancient Rome. This hilarious diary recounts his exploits as, desperate to become a great Roman hero, Dorkius enlists the help of his father's friend, Stoutus, to teach him the noble art of fighting. But heroism doesn't come naturally to Dorkius. Plus, his dad doesn't listen to him, his friends pick on him, and his mum is more interested in her sacred chickens. Dorkius knows there's a mighty warrior inside him, just waiting to get out ... isn't there? Humorously illustrated by Andrew Pinder, this book will delight any child who would like to get a taste of life as an ancient geek.

I did not like this as much as the third installment of the series, 'Dorkius Maximus in Pompeii', which I read first and loved.
Why not? Partly because a clever joke is never as funny the second time around. But also because the story here is somewhat muddled, hinging on implausibilities and focusing on violence, not my cup of tea. And because Dorkius is much dorkier this time; in Pompeii it was possible to identify with the protagonist to a large extent, here he is a silly figure of fun. And because there really is a lot of wee and poo this time - too much of a good thing.

Three and a half stars

I had read the third installment in the Dorkius Maximus first, and this later, and so, like the Wimpy series by Tim Collins, I can safely say that the further a series continues, the more the humor falls.

This book was good. Preferably, read this and continue no further. A disappointment awaits.

Fun read and also a great way to educate yourself about history in the most ridiculous way

description

description

description

I am really enjoying this book simply because it is so funny. I would really recommend it...
Dourkius Maximus is trying to be be the greatest hero in roman history he writes in a diary every day to keep track of his failing life at the moment, things aren't looking so positive 'friends' are bullying him,his Dad dosen't listen to anyone and all his mom cares about is sacared chickens all he wants is to be trained to be as powerfull and holly as heros who knows maybe one day he might be called to save Rome. I am about 99 pages in and it was an outstanding book both for anyone who like comedy.

now I am 150 pages in and he is back for more training and now more determined than ever to save rome now he knows julian Cearser is in danger he is now training all day every day after finding out that his couch is up for killing Ceaser until he goes to Ceasers house to find a dead body of a guard he flips over the body and takes his sword and sneaks up to his couch and stabs his back saving Ceasers life and then he is rewarded with a trip to Egypt...

I thought this book was really interesting in its own way and that hopefully the other books in this sires are just as good as this one and better.I feel it is a good read to anyone who likes books that bring you back in time then this book is for you.

Dorkius Maximus is determined to be a Roman hero! Read all about his struggles to be a hero and his plot to save Julius Caesar from being murdered! Dorkius saves Caesar from the murderers, and is rewarded with a trip to Egypt!

This book has everything from humour to excitement and adventure! This book is good because it's about a dorky boy, who has problems and isn't perfect, which means you can relate with him better.

My 10yo daughter rated this. She says it's ok, but not amazing. A good story for fun, light reading. My opinion, it catches the kids attention enough to keep the, going and it good reading for fluency.

This book to me felt like a Diary of a Wimpy Kid wannabe. I don't really like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series that much, so this was not very good for me. I know this is a really short review, but I do not have anything more to say.

It's a light, fun and quick story, plus the details of the olden Roman days is quite interesting, even though I doubt whether it's true or not.
