Adventures inspired by the best-selling Pokémon video games! All your favorite Pokémon game characters jump out of the screen into the pages of this action-packed manga!
On an accidental seafaring adventure in a submarine, Ruby discovers something mysterious deep beneath the waves. Then fishing nets him another Pokémon. But is his growing team bringing him closer to—or farther from—his dream? Next, Ruby must face his scariest opponent yet...his father! Meanwhile, Sapphire is having trouble getting in her quota of Gym battles. One Gym Leader wants to just hand her a badge without a proper fight! And another has been...kidnapped?!
I think this suffers most for the duo storylines being smushed together. Sapphire had a great arc with his dad here, but he's also saying stuff about the Contests he hasn't entered yet and all the drama with Team Magma. Then Ruby is off earning another badge but also fighting Team Aqua. It's almost too much but yet not enough? Like the plot is so slow cause we're only getting the smallest snipets and nothing has enough room to breath and grow.
This volume was pretty packed with action!! I forgot exactly where we left off in the last one (it’s been a while since I read it, okay, lol?) but I think where we started was the perfect way to get the book going!! My review might have some spoilers, and although I’ll try and make anything that I think is giving away a little TOO much of the story spoiler marked, please still read at your own risk!
The volume begins with Ruby stuck in the submarine, where Blaise, from Team Magma, is attacking him! I really, really like the character of Ruby, even with all his flaws, there’s just something about him that I can’t help but love. Anyway, Blaise goes into all-out attacks on Ruby, the heat creating illusions, and Ruby suffers deeply from this. Can he fight back…?
Meanwhile, Sapphire is a little disheartened, as she just missed Steven, the mysterious man she was asked to deliver a letter to. She decides that rather than trying to seek out clues for him, she can hopefully just come across clues as she battles gym leaders…? Her logic is a bit flawed, but she is a kid, so I don’t really know how much I can judge. While wandering around, she suddenly falls into a cold and dark hole?! After flipping herself back up to regular ground, she is suddenly attacked by an army of robots….!?? Just what is going on!!??
She soon finds out that the robots were attacking her because they thought she was a pokemon, and two strange people were trying to catch it. After she gets over her initial hurt by being mistaken for a pokemon AGAIN, she lets out the info that she fell into a strange, dark hole…. And the two men, Tricky and Watson can’t contain their excitement! It might be New Mauville, the ancient underground city!! Wattson can’t wait to investigate, but before that, some challengers show up… as he is a gym leader! He beats them all with only one move, but gives them a badge anyway, and tries to offer Sapphire a badge as well, just for finding the entrance to the city. She doesn’t accept this, wanting to earn her badge, not just be handed it willy-nilly! And so, she offers to help them investigate, exchange for the badge! I don’t like that she didn’t battle, buuuut I guess I’ll have to just deal with it, there’s nothing I can do about it.
Then we are back to Ruby, who escaped from the submarine, and finds himself on Route 118! While he is floating by, he catches sight of the news on TV, where they are describing the submarine attack- and mentioning the boy that went missing, which, of course, is Ruby! He considers going back to where he was before, not wanting to worry everyone, but he’s too scared that his Dad would then catch wind of where he is. So, instead, he mistakingly ends up tangling a fisher’s fishing rod?! The fisher is very mad, and demands that Ruby stays to help him fish in order to repay him. Ruby gives in, and keeps catching Feebas, and thinking it is ugly, throws it back into the sea repeatedly. The fisher is facing the opposite way, and doesn’t notice any of this. While they are fishing he explains how he’s looking for a super-rare pokemon, and shows Ruby a picture- of course, it is ! When one jumps into Ruby’s hands, it gets away quickly, also taking his PokeNav! Ruby explains how he’s looking understands the man’s upset, as he is also looking for a certain pokemon- the beautiful Milotic, haha, surprise surprise.
We then learn that Norman, Ruby’s father, is currently searching for him. Also, Ruby and the fisher get caught up in a fight between wild pokemon, but are saved by Feebas??! The fisher man insists that Ruby gets it, and Ruby openly admits how gross he thinks it looks. Sometimes Ruby is so vain and mean about his Pokémon’s looks, but I still love him- I think he’ll learn to be more mature, anyway. Regardless, they are hiding out in an old weather institute. Ruby suddenly realizes Mumu is missing, and following after it, he finds a trail of Pokeblocks. They seem just like the ones he makes, which is very strange- and a voice behind he explains that they are his. The owner of the voice…. Is his father, NORMAN?!
Lastly, we are back to Sapphire, who is about to battle the next gym leader, Flannery! However, it’s just her luck that Flannery is suddenly and it’s up to Sapphire to save her!! The girl is really clever, and manages to escape a We are also introduced to a scientist that Team Aqua is using, tricking him into thinking they are so kind and just care about the environment and his research. It was fun seeing the ways they tried to deceive him, I enjoyed it. We leave off where Is everything going according to Team Aqua’s plan?
Honestly, I quite enjoyed this book. It had plenty of action, but mixed in some fun and interesting plot points. A decent addition to the series for sure!
(This book contains some fantasy violence, kidnapping, and some abuse from Ruby’s father. I would give it an age rating of 7+!)
Sapphire sigue avanzando a buen ritmo.
The character development in this one was great, specifically the scenes between Ruby and Norman. One, it was an incredible setting and actually full of tension, and two, it was very heartwarming. Very clearly gay/coming-out-coded, and I never expected Pokémon to tackle a subject like that. I'm absolutely positive that wasn't their intention, but it's so relatable.
Pokemon Sapphire Version was my first game of the franchise and it's still one of my favorites. I love reliving the story through this medium. And even though I already know the plot and the abilities and evolutions of all the Pokemon, it's still fun to read.
Esse volume teve de tudo. Partes emocionantes, batalhas quentes e um desenvolvimento de personagens sem tamanho. Todo volume fico impressionado com o uso dos pkm no manga. O quão diferente é do anime e ao mesmo inteligente e natural.
