The first book in the Ruby/Sapphire arc! Much shorter than the other entries to the Pokemon Adventures series, I thought this one was quick and refreshing. It's been a real long while since I've played these games, so if there were any callbacks to the game lore they were lost on me other than the characters resembling the avatars. The previous volumes of Pokemon Adventures followed the main video game characters in a fanfiction take on the game's story...so I'm just going to assume the same for this one!

Ruby is the male protagonist and he just wants to show off his beautiful Pokemon in contests where Sapphire, our female protagonist wants to win badges. And they have a little friendly competition to see who can complete their goal first. Cute and quick, much better so far than the previous arc.

The end of the gold and silver arc was okay and the beginning of the Ruby and Sapphire arc did have some interesting things for it. For example it was kind of nice that Ruby the male protagonist is going after the contests while Sapphire the female protagonist is the one going after the gym badges. Even thought I was kind of confused as to why Sapphire was introduced as a cave girl since it really does not add to her character since she acts pretty normal despite living a cave for what seems like most of her life. Also nice that the story does take its time with events as Sapphire does not challenge the first gym until the end of this volume.

This book was ok. And an ok starting to the new story ark of the Ruby and Sapphire! I have to say this but I think the words that the characters say feel more alive and feel like they would actually say that.

Really fun to meet a new group. And that the beauty games are introduced. May being Sapphire is weird tho.

I didn't finish reading this book and I am really ashamed to say that. I had such a difficult time following Ruby in his adventures because of his personality and interactions with others for about half of the book. He didn't want to help anyone in need for fear he, or his pokemon, would get dirty, and showed no empathy for anybody. The character only cared about himself.

Now don't get me wrong, authors have full freedom to write their characters this way, and it has had some positive interactions in the past, I'm just saying it wasn't for me.

I would love to try and re-read this book with a fresh perspective and see how things go a second time around.

This one surprised me!! I was excited to start Ruby and Sapphire, but really had no clue what I was getting into at all. What really shocked me was just how... unlikable Ruby was. He's not willing to get his Pokemon or hands dirty at all, and only really cares about himself. This makes me very hopeful that we'll get some really good character development... I honestly think we will!! Despite him being unlikable, though, I somehow like him at the same time, haha. Doesn't make any sense, but-- Also Sapphire is nothing like I expected her to be like at all. She's very.... tough, and jungle like?? This makes the two main characters COMPLETE opposites, so it's fun to see them interact. Can't wait to read the next one!!

(This book contains mild violence. I would give it an age rating of all-ages.)

Wait wait wait wait...

RUBY is the contest fanatic? And SAPPHIRE is a wild child who wants to kick Pokemon butt?

Considering what little I know about these characters is of May, the anime look-alike who loved contests and was only using the Pokemon journey as an excuse to get out of the house, I was really surprised. I like the total play on my expectations, but it did take some getting used to.

This volume is a brand new story and doesn't have any overlap with previous story lines (yet), so it's an okay place to jump in, though I still prefer the original story so far.

This never crossed my mind until reading this volume, but there weren't any investigative reporters in the previous stories. Hmm.. With all those crimes happening you'd think there would've been. Well, that's neither here nor there.

I like that Ruby and Sapphire are breaking gender stereotypes in this series. I find that refreshing. Ruby's

By far the strongest start of the three PA runs I've read to now. Both Ruby and Sapphire are very lively characters, and the way their goals align with their personalities (and vice versa) makes it easy to engage with them. Wally was interesting here too, much moreso than in the games, lol. Looking forward to reading more!

A bit of an odd volume. Half of the volume wraps up the GSC story to a satisfying conclusion and then jumps drastically to new characters that don't immediately endear themselves to the reader. In fact the new characters don't get introduced very well, already having decently leveled Hoenn Pokémon without explanation.

Definitely not my favourite in the series, but it was still decent. I think I'm being biased in my favouritism for Johto and Kanto considering I'm the most nostalgic for those regions.
Still a good read and it introduced Sapphire (May) and Ruby (Brendan) well.

I'm not very impressed with this series so far, which is sad because Hoenn is my favorite region, and Ruby and Sapphire were my favorite games until Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby came out.

This was a wonderful introduction to Ruby and Sapphire. I really enjoyed it. I love the competitiveness between them and their respective goals.
