The equestrian club's first riding competition brings them into conflict with the series' first villain, a rival from another school who is just a tad bit more amusing than she is annoying. On top of that stress, our hero is pushing himself way too hard to make the upcoming school festival a success. This educational and humorous series starts to turn up the drama.

It’s the volume full of horses! Enter the wonderful world of jumping competitions and now go look up some on YouTube because horse jumping is fun to watch.

Also, an important note: All you people who overwork yourselves because you can’t say ‘no’, you’re making the rest of us worry!

This series has 15 volumes.

It's been too long since I got my hands on a volume of Silver Spoon and read and just enjoyed Hiromu Arakawa's storytelling. Once again, as always, I do recommend anyone potentially interested in this title to find and try the anime first; it was on Netflix for a time and while I don't think it's on there any more, I can confirm that at this point in time it IS on Crunchyroll. While I'm presently enjoying the manga more than I did the anime, I still think the anime is a good digest form of the story to go through first before tackling the manga.

That being said, the main events of this volume take place in what is season 2 of the anime, and as such, between spoilers for the books if you've not read them and spoilers for the anime if you've not seen it, I'm not sure what all I can say safely. The majority of this volume starts off very fun and giggle-inducing, but the moment you near the end of chapter 52, things suddenly take a much more serious turn and the tone becomes anxious. The final scene in chapter 53 only adds to that feeling as the volume leaves on a cliffhanger, and remembering what follows from watching the anime, I'm both excited and terrified to see how this portion of the story is handled in the next volume.

Once again, I cannot stress enough how good this series is, or how much I love it. I feel like more people need to give it a chance, because it's really a gem and I think everyone can, at some point or another, relate to Hachiken or one of the other characters.

Hachiken enters his first horse riding competition with the school equestrian club. He is very nervous, but he tries to encourage his teammates. He is focused and determined to do well, but there are various distractions surrounding the competition. A rider from another school calls him out as her greatest rival with hilarious results. In the second half of this volume, Hachiken is helping to prepare for the big school festival and has a long list of responsibilities.

I loved this volume! I got really excited about the riding competition and was interested to see the scores of the different characters who competed. There are some really funny scenes, and interesting developments for Hachiken in his personal relationships with friends and family.

As usual, Hachiken is pushing himself to work harder than ever before, but this time he faces the consequences of never saying “no.” and wins 4th place in his “division” at the horse competition.

Ayaiko finally realises (with a little help from her dorm mates) that Hachiken has feelings for her, and wins 3rd place in her division at the competition.

This volume focuses on the preparation for the festival, but Hachiken has worked himself too hard and near the end of the book, and on the day of the festival, he collapses from exhaustion and is sent to the hospital where he is expected to make a recovery and return to Ezo AG before too long, but on the last page Hachiken is confronted at the hospital by his father. I wait and worry for what this means for the rest of the series and why his father decided to step into his life.

Favorite quote:
“No choice but to do it without him. Can’t let his death be in vain!”
“He’s not dead!”

Hachiken’s first equestrian competition is finally here, yet still amidst the planning for the Fall Festival. Hachiken likens the pressure of competing to taking a difficult exam, and this helps him focus on riding and jumping with Chestnut, his horse. Ayame Minamikujou, a competitive girl from Mikage’s middle school, is also competing in the equestrian match, and her overconfidence doesn’t hide the fact that she doesn’t understand the rules of the competition. She swears to be the rival of Mikage, even though Mikage is in a higher class than Minamikuyou. So she sets her sights on Hachiken as well. Once the competition is over, it’s time to make the final preparations for the Fall Festival, but Hachiken is litterally running himself ragged with all the different events he’s coordinating!

Minamikujou is super annoying but hilarious because she understands nothing. Mikage is such a nice person that she doesn’t care about the rivalry at all and instead wants to know where Minamikujou gets her hair done. The entire equestrian competition is full of funny moments as each student handles their nerves and tries to do their best with their horse. I also love how Hachiken's brother keeps popping up in the most random of places, always food-related, and always so proud of Hachiken despite Hachiken's feelings towards him. As always, Arakawa's attention to detail when it comes to agriculture, mixed in with her signature humor and illustrations, makes this title extremely enjoyable.

Sara's Rating: 10/10

All the pretty horses! OMG! Whomever was responsible for backgrounds in this volume deserves a raise. There was so much detail packed into many of the panels; everything came to gorgeous life. The equestrian club’s first competition dominated this volume. There is great tension and suspense built for our favorite Ezo Ag riders along with great moments of humor. The introduction of Mikage’s (and Hachiken’s) egomaniacal competition rival was a bright spot. And, the return of Hachiken’s big bro also had me in stitches. I’m not sure how I feel about Tamako’s crash diet. In her “Egg” form, I appreciate her confidence and body positivity. Hachiken’s overwork comes back to bite him and we get a surprise visitor as our cliffhanger.

Hachiken experiences his first horse riding competition, and then preparations for the school festival get extra intense, but he works up the guts to ask Mikage to go somewhere fun for a break and neither of them is sure it is a date or not. And the amount of responsibility he's taken on may be a bit much.

Wow, Hachiken's self-named rival in the horse show is something else. She's so intense it gets laughable (especially because she is awful and doesn't know what she's talking about). Hachiken might just learn his lesson to start saying no to some things after how this ended. We'll see. Another fun time spent with the Ezo Ag crew.

Notes on content: Maybe 2-3 minor swear words. No sexual content. One person passes out from exhaustion.

I love it when the manga introduces a new character because we get to see, yet again, Arakawa's exceptional character designs and development in how they're created. The new character is this 90s heiress-type who would do a dignity laugh (google dignity laugh if you're unfamiliar, it's better to see than describe), who is something else entirely. And I'll be honest, I didn't know if I'd love a farm manga as I do, but I absolutely love this manga.

This is another volume where the comedy gets broken up by the serious drama which goes hand and hand with this series. It comes out of nowhere but makes perfect sense given the hints and build up throughout the chapters leading up to it. The final page is a cliffhanger which will leave the reader scrambling to pick up the next volume (which I would have if I hadn't needed to sleep right after finding the book).

I was hoping the horse stuff would cool, but looks like it's just getting warmed up. Looking forward to the next volume. This one left off on a real cliffhanger. Good dating advice shared in the girls' dorm: don't just look at a potential match as what *you* have to offer, but what what can you gain from the boy as well.

i love the girl with the superiority complex who never fails to come in dead last at every single event she competes in at the riding show. also the fact that my library does not have vol 7 onwards is homophobic to me personally because i must know what these silly farm nerds get up to after i got left on such a cliffhanger! hiromu arakawa is also 2 for 2 in writing shitty fathers for her main characters which i appreciate because it gives me more fictional characters to be angry at

Not in the mood to write a review for each one, just too tired. But I had to do this one. Not a fan of the new character, a typic ojou-sama even with curls. And I HATED what happened to Hachiken. I mean, it was coming, but I had hoped given all he did, it would be AFTER the festival. Now it feels like a cop-out and I don't like that.

This was a good volume. I binge read the series however so I am not sure which events were specifically tied to this volume. See first few volumes and volume 7 for my general feelings on the series so far.

I truly adore Arakawa's writing and art style and am constantly blown away by the fact that she can write both high stakes fantasy and a very comforting slice of life. One day I will have the physical copies of these and not just the digitals.

A step into the horse racing world. I remember that phase well. Good times. I don't know much about it (except for the romanticized TV show stuff) but it was good. The pacing was great.

This ending was pretty shocking.

Aquí sí que hay diferencias significativas con el anime. Recortaron un montón del concurso de equitación y ciertos diálogos importantes son omitidos. Me gustó mucho este tomo. Mi favorito hasta el momento.

Nobody is more surprised than me that one of my favorite comic series is about daily life at an agricultural voc. tech school.

This volume has some laugh out loud moments as the result of Hachiken's first horse show and, as always, Arakakawa plays around with tropes so you get stories that are fresh and familiar at the same time..
