Marjorie Weinman Sharmat was an American children's writer. She wrote more than 130 books for children and teens and her books have been translated into several languages. They have won awards including Book of the Year by the Library of Congress or have become selections by the Literary Guild.
Perhaps Sharmat's most popular work features the child detective Nate the Great. He was inspired by and named after her father, who lived to see the first Nate book published. One story, Nate the Great Goes Undercover, was adapted as a made-for-TV movie that won the Los Angeles International Children's Film Festival Award. Sharmat's husband Mitchell Sharmat expanded Nate's storyline by creating Olivia Sharp, his cousin and fellow detective. Husband and wife wrote four Olivia Sharp books published 1989 to 1991. During the 1990s, their son Craig Sharmat (then in his thirties) wrote three Nate books with his mother. In the late 2010s, their other son Andrew Sharmat co-wrote the last two Nate books written while Marjorie Weinman Sharmat was alive. With Marjorie Weinman Sharmat's passing in 2019 Andrew has continued writing the series with Nate the Great and the Earth Day Robot (2021).
In the mid-1980s Sharmat wrote three books published in 1984 and 1985 under the pseudonym Wendy Andrews.
Sharmat also wrote the Sorority Sisters series, eight short novels published in 1986 and 1987. They are romantic fiction with a sense of humor. They are set in a California public high school (day school for ages 14 to 18, approximately).

A series for beginning chapter books that enjoy a good mystery. This is about a Halloween mystery. The mystery is the missing cat. I remember reading the Encyclopedia Brown series as a child, not that I can remember the mysteries to be solved, but I enjoyed those. They were much more involved with more clues. This was very simple and basic. There isn’t much to love for older readers. It did not impress me to much. I do think this is a step down from Encyclopedia Brown books - it is more beginner. It is probably ok. It is not too scary either.

Nate the Great and the Halloween Hunt is a great mystery book for grades 2 and 3! In this book Nate is solving a spooky Halloween case that has him searching through an old haunted house for his friends missing cat! This book could be used as a lesson to go along with Halloween. There is no mature content.

I did not like this book because I do not like haunted houses. I enjoyed this book because I like Halloween. I also did not like this book because I did not like the part when Nate the Great had to go on a Halloween hunt and go in two haunted houses and look for little Hex, the cat.

I absolutely loved this book! A very unique approach to children's books, this detective is a great sleuth and a great kid. And the illustrations are straight up some of the best I have seen - awesome work Marc Simont! All around, this is a great book, and I can't wait to read the rest in the series.

I bought several books from the Nate the Great series for my children. I think these books are distinctive in their age category. And the illustrations by Marc Simont add a lot of character.

Nate the Great is a young boy who loves to solve mysteries. When something is amuse in the neighborhood he's on the case. In this one his friends are going trick or treating but one of his friends basket is already to heavy and she can't get any more treats AND her cat is missing! So he goes on the case to solve the missing cat. I enjoyed reading this to my special needs teenage sons they both enjoyed listening to it(even the one that normally won't sit still to be read to) at times I felt like one of them were kind of getting scared because it does talk about a haunted house and Nate has to go investigate then gets 'locked' in and finds another way out. So be cautious if you have a young child listening to this book or a 'sensitive' child as they may become a little scared at places but if you stay with the story they soon get over being scared. And as far as figuring out where the cat went as a reader you find out at the end and if you pay attention to the 'clues' along the way you can figure it out if you can't and find out when you read the end. Nate explains all the clues he picked up along the way. Perfect to help a young mystery solver figure things out.

Nate the Great books aren't that great. I hated them when I was a kid, yet I would always read them. The endings of the books were always the same, they figured out what or who did it. And where are Nate's parents? They just let their son walk around everywhere and question people. That is very irresponsible of them. Nate the Great books always made me fall asleep and always wasted my time. I would not recommend this book to anyone, especially little kids. If kids want real mystery, they should read Sherlock Homes.

I read this with the boys. It was a good for for them. It has pictures on mot pages but it is longer than a picture book. It actually was readable in one sitting. My 5 year old will be starting kindergarten this fall so I am trying to work on getting him ready. One of the things we are doing is reading books. Preferably books that are the top of his maturity level.

Our girls really enjoy the Nate the Great series...the endearingly strange pets, the odd characters, the mysteries to solve and especially the pancakes. This is a fun one for Halloween, with silly costumes (a dancing artichoke?!?), a haunted house and a missing cat. These are fun books to read aloud.

"Nate the Great and the Halloween Hunt," by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat, is another mystery in this series. Nate and his trusted dog, Sludge, solve a Halloween mystery. The missing cat mystery on Halloween is solved by Nate's observations and deductive reasoning. Children who like mysteries will love this story.

I got a little confused by the Hex characters, but I hadn't been paying the most attention, either, so that may have been warranted.

Overall, I found this book cute, of the Nate the Great series. I've not read any of the others yet.

(I just noticed the reason I have been recording the books I've been reading lately is an exercise in memory more than anything else!)

I was not impressed by this book one bit. I loved these books as a kid but as an adult I realize that there isn't really a lot going on in these books. The story was rushed throughout the entire book. Nate the Great tries to solve the mystery of a girls missing cat on Halloween. I only recommend this as a leisure read for kids. I do not recommend even placing it in your classroom.

Such a cute young Nate the Great Detective book. In this book, Nate the Great is hired to help his friend find her cat, Little Hex which leads him out on Halloween night and even to a Haunted House. I do not want to say more as to not spoil the book but it is a fun "not so spooky" book for kids of all ages. I highly recommend it.

Great read for my seven year old (first grader) as he is just entering chapter books. We enjoyed this one together and plan to check out some of the others soon. He was able to do most of the reading himself with minimal sounding out.

The genre of this short chapter book is mystery. This text is a guiding reading level K and is great for first through second grade. It is a wonderful introduction into chapter books for children. It has interesting illustrations throughout the text and is an easy story to follow along with.

My son and I thought that this book was a teeny bit better than some of the others we've read in the series. At least in this book, Nate didn't have to look for the missing cat in a garbage can. It's hard to believe that the cat would have ended up where it did.
