Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., better known by his stage name Snoop Dogg (previously Snoop Doggy Dogg), is a Grammy Award-nominated American rapper, singer, record producer, and actor. Snoop is best known as an MC in the West Coast hip hop scene, and for being one of producer Dr. Dre's most notable protégés. His catch phrase is "-izzle," a slang term developed by Oakland, California rap group 3X Krazy in the mid-1990s and popularized primarily by fellow Bay Area rapper E-40.
His mother nicknamed him "Snoopy" as a child because of the way he dressed and because of his love of the cartoon Peanuts; he took the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg when he began recording. He changed his name to Snoop Dogg in 1998, when he left his original record label Death Row Records and signed with No Limit Records.
Whether or not you’re a fan of Snoop Dogg’s or Earl “E-40” Stevens’ music, you’ll enjoy reading and cooking from their cookbook, Snoop Dogg Presents Goon with the Spoon. Who knew that the awarding winning artists were also entrepreneurs and cooks?
This cookbook is nothing like the authors’ music, and will appeal to almost everyone, with many dishes that have a southern slant, others with Asian roots, and even others that are all American with meat and potatoes and seafood. The recipes are written in the traditional manner with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions that are easy to understand. Many of the recipes are very easy, and all of them can be successfully made by anyone, whether beginning cooks or advanced cooks. Each of the recipes is prefaced by authors’ comments which include comments, tips, and/or histories of the dishes. This makes the cookbook interesting and one that is enjoyable to read.
Most of the recipes include beautiful photographs taken by professional photographer, Antonis Achilleos. The photos are unique, and sometimes you need to turn the book sideways to see them.
All told, this cookbook is one that everyone will want to curl up in a corner and read cover to cover, and will find dozens of recipes to add to their “must make soon” queue.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I was so excited to see another cookbook by Snoop Dogg and just had to have it. This cookbook is so easy to navigate as it's divided into the following categories: breakfast, munchies, drinks, mains, sides, and sweets. Snoop sure knows what he's doing! The recipes I tried were very tasty. So far I've made Fried Chicken and French Toast Sandwiches, Easy Cheesy Garlic Bread, and Cajun-Spiced Potato Chips. I will absolutely make these again and look forward to trying more of Snoop's recipes! I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and Edelweiss+. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
My ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Excellent photos, another great cookbook by Snoop and co. Looking forward to the release of this one in time for the holidays!
I came across this book when I was perusing Netgalley. I have previously read through his first cookbook From Crook to Cook and enjoyed it. I have tried a few recipes, especially the bacon one! I was surprised at how easy so many of them were. When I saw that there was a follow-up, I requested it right away!
I will preface this by saying that I have not made any of the recipes yet. But I will be. There are so many recipes that sound odd but look delicious! Did I ever think I would be craving hot cheeto mac and cheese balls? Nope, but here I am. Some of the things I enjoy about his cookbooks are the photos for each recipe, the fun names and descriptions, and the ease of many of them. There are several things that I want to give a try! I have never heard of cornbread rice but the photo caught my attention. When I read his description, "What is cornbread rice? Try it and find out." I immediately thought "challenge accepted!"
Overall, I think this is a fun and interesting cookbook. Many recipes are similar to things you would find in other books. At the same time, there's a good variety of things I never heard of before. If you want something a little different and fun then I would give this a go!
Many thanks to Chronicle Books and Netgalley for an e-arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own!
I bought this book for my partner, who is a fan of Snoop Dogg and the food photography through this book definitely gave us the munchies, so we had to give a few a go!
Unfortunately out of the recipes we did try out, none of them were good 🙈 they all lacked flavour and just were not nice to eat. We did have a few other recipes that we wanted to try out, but we’ve wasted enough food and ingredients with just these 4 dishes and will not be testing out more.
Recipes we made; 🍽️ Green Brownies (Mint Chocolate Brownies) The amount of mint was just too overpowering and it was more of a cake consistency, than a brownie. 🍽️ Wiggle Wiggle Fruit Squares (Jelly Slice) I love jelly slice, but the texture of this was completely off. 🍽️ Mozerella-Stuffed Turkey Meatloaf with BBQ Sauce Too oily, the bbq sauce overpowered the dish and another one where the texture was ick. 🍽️ Smothered Chippin’ and Dippin’ Fried Chicken Lacked in flavour.
This book will just live on the shelf for aesthetic purposes only.
I am a sucker for celebrity cookbooks, so when I had the chance to review this one for NetGalley, I jumped on it. The photos are fantastic, the introductions to the recipes are great, and the recipes themselves sound amazing. I will be purchasing this book and working my way through it. I'm especially excited to try the banana lumpia and the Snoop Loop Bars. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for something fun and tasty.
The pairing of Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart has now extended to E-40. A wonderful recipe book with beautiful photos and easy to follow recipes. Some of the recipes contain alcohol, but you can forgo that if you do not partake. Some of the recipes seem quirky, Cheeto macaroni and cheese, however the social media community states that it is delicious. Have fun and share your stories.
I came across this at our public library. Fun sounding recipes with interesting ingredients including Kool Aide, chicken breaded with crushed Fritos , brownies with York peppermint candy and Andes Candy. Snickers Pocket Pastries- Snickers candy bars inside refrigerated pie crusts. The descriptions and instructions are interesting as well. Might try one or two recipes
Snoop is entertaining and this is full of really great and easy recipes, some of which I will make. The mixed drinks are tempting, but the main dishes are imaginative and mouth-watering. Snoop does like to include some snacks, like crushed funyuns, garnishments not to my taste, but the majority of dishes seem truly delightful.
If you know me at all, you know I love me some Snoop. This cookbook contains a wide variety of recipes from Snoop and E-40. Many are variations on traditional southern recipes and most sound delicious. I wrote down a few to try.
Note: There are a LOT of recipes that call for wine or liquor. But there are easy substitutions if you’re sober.
Since I love Thanksgiving, I'm going to try something new: the Kicking Lickin' Collard Greens & Cognac Mashed Potatoes. I'm also going to try the Mozzarella Stuffed Turkey Meatloaf with BBQ sauce. Also, a great gumbo recipe. I appreciated how E-40 and Snoop added their favorite memories and comments. Made the book feel extra special. Love to see brothers collab.
Not much my stomach can handle but the presentation is rad and the descriptions made me giggle a lot. I for sure recognized a couple recipes my Gma used to make, with a special spicy or alcoholic twist that would have been appreciated in my youth.
A lot of fun looking recipes. They aren't ridiculously complex, or require so many ingredients they become intimidating to attempt. Some are twists on traditional recipes, too. Fun new ways to try classic favorites.
Snoop Presents Goon With the Spoon felt rushed. It was almost like a hurry to the press's follow-up to an amazing book. Ya know, strike while the iron’s hot? Although this was a good book, it didn't quite live up to its predecessor.
This book, just like From Crook to Cook is full of recipes I can't wait to try. I checked both out from the library but you have to return those so I just ordered both so I can have my own copies and start making some of these recipes.
I was impressed. The great lingo used to tell the stories was hysterical. I could "hear" his voice when I read them. The recipes were practical. I even copied a recipe!
Nothing new or unique in this collection of recipes. If you’re a huge Snoop fan, you might like this. Otherwise, pass as it feels like this was published as a money grab.
