Follow the simple steps in this book to bake a batch of sweet or savoury biscuits or soft breakfast muffins, decorate a luscious cake and venture into the world of breadmaking.
A well set out book covering a good range of sweet and savoury recipes plus a great section called "What went wrong" (I needed that... a lot). There's a very informative section on bread and pastries. Faves = Apple and Spice Teacake and Date and Walnut Rolls.
Aimed at the bakers with newbie-to-moderate skills.
From the basics to fancy, this baking cookbook has got you covered. Although I haven't tried any of their fancy cakes, I've been using this book for over a decade for the basics and it's an indispensable resource. The basics: flaky shortcrust pastry, melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies, many kinds of muffins, light, buttery scones, airy croissants, crisp and light baguettes, savory focaccia bread.
This cookbook is great because in addition to the usual clear instructions, it has:
* Descriptions of baking utensils and ingredients * Troubleshooting w/pictures
Some of the recipes are very yummy, but there is a tendency for most of the recipes to use a lot of butter, which I don't find to be particularly healthy.
Although I'm not fond of baking, I surprisingly bought this book trying to improve my baking techniques. I expected to find more cupcake recipes, it was about 5 recipes which was very disappointing. But the bread recipes are quite good, they worked out great. The book perfectly explains how it's done the wrong way, the better way and the best way.
Really enjoyed the amount of new recipes that this book has to offer. Murdoch books did a great job of varying from the "run-of-the-mill" baking recipes; I just don't know that I wand to try a lot of them.
