After years of looking for his missing daughter, Elizabeth, and coming up empty, he finally has something. A picture of her shortly after her abduction, showing her with another girl in Minneapolis, far away from her home in San Diego. When Joe arrives in Minneapolis, armed with the picture and an address, he begins to follow a vague trail of clues into Elizabeth’s life in Minnesota. He enlists the aid of a local woman, who specializes in helping runaways. In exchange for her help, Joe attempts to help her locate a boy who works for her and has gone missing.
As Joe digs further into the dark underworld of runaways on the Minneapolis streets, he begins to close the gap between himself and his long missing daughter. A retired detective and a few others offer him more hope, but what Joe doesn’t realize is that the closer he gets to finding Elizabeth…the further away he actually is.
Jeff Shelby grew up around the beaches of Southern California and graduated from the University of California at Irvine. He is the author of the bestselling Noah Braddock series (Killer Swell, Wicked Break, Liquid Smoke), the stand alone thriller Thread of Hope, and the Deuce Winters series (Stay At Home Dead), written under the name Jeffrey Allen. He lives in Dallas, TX.
Another superb book in this series !! I loved the first one too and most certainly will be reading the third. You really need to read Thread of Hope before this one but you'll not be disappointed. Joe Tyler, the "hero" of the books is an extremely likeable guy. He helps people to find missing kids yet his own daughter was abducted eight years ago and so the one kid he'd wish to find has eluded him thus far. However, in this instalment he gets closer than he ever has before and it makes for a gripping and very exciting read.....I was totally gripped when he got so close this time. I saw one apostrophe error and NO spelling mistakes which also makes it a delight to read this author's books. It matters a lot to me and to many readers and so many authors don't seem to give a toss and publish and be damned anyway. Well done, Jeff, another cracking tale !!
I cannot summarize in a few words how great this book is. I would have to be a great writer to do that, and I am not. Jeff Shelby is. This book is fast-paced, well-written, realistic, full of action and suspense, and contains some humor and even some tears. No, really. It is VERY rare for a book, show, or movie to make me cry, but this book has it all. This is even better than the first in the series, which was great, but I recommend reading them in order. Also, when you buy this book, you may as well buy the next in the series, because you are not going to want to wait. I bought the 3rd book 4 seconds after finishing the last page of the 2nd.
Joe Tyler was a cop, a good one, until his world went to hell after his young daughter was stolen from his front yard in Coronado, CA. He got pushed out of his job (wrongly) for being unstable. He spends his time helping other families find their missing kids. In book 2 of this well-written, high-tension police procedural, he finally gets a lead on his own kid, and off he goes to Minneapolis to find her. He agrees to help a local woman who helps street kids find her employee, and she helps him try to find his daughter.
This is a well-written, tightly plotted and paced traditional PI novel. Joe will do what he has to do to find missing kids. He’s a little scary, in that he’s tightly wound and will stop at nothing to bring families peace; but he’s also the kind of guy you want on your side in a shootout. The author does a really good job of letting the reader into Joe’s head, making him sympathetic and someone to root for, and in setting the scenes. Joe’s flawed, but he’s got a good heart and a strong sense of right and wrong. Nothing scares him (he’s already lost the things he loves the most - his child and his wife, when they took different paths in dealing with the girl’s disappearance), so he makes a tough adversary.
This has just enough grit to keep me interested, balanced out by Joe’s heart and his drive to do the right thing, whatever the cost. The endings are abrupt, which might be a problem for some. Just makes me want to rush to buy the next book so I can find out what happened. This was an edge-of-the-seat read for me, and hard to put down. Thoroughly enjoyable read. These books can be read out of order, as the author provides sufficient backstory without bonking people over the head about what they missed. I sill advocate for reading in order, and I think it makes the characters more human and real. I will definitely read more in this series.
I really liked this book, and wanted to read the rest in the series. Unfortunately, it's not available in any library. Story about a cop whose young daughter is kidnapped. It destroys his job, his marriage, his friendships. He leaves his former life, deals with his grief by looking for other missing kids. His best friend is blamed for a crime, and calls him home. At the end of the book, there is news of his daughter, there is a picture of her after the kidnapping. The end.
A little less meat in this than in the first. Felt too short... not enough story. But I'll be moving on to the next in the series. I'm just feeling like this one didn't contain enough to be classified a full book.
"Thread of Suspicion" is the second in the Joe Tyler series and really needs to be read in that order. Seven years ago Joe Tyler's daughter, Elizabeth, aged 9, disappeared as he and she set up Christmas decorations in the family garden in San Diego. In the aftermath he lost his wife, his career as a cop and, for a time, any reason to continue living. He's just received a photograph showing his daughter and another girl taken after a year or two after her disappearance. There's also a name and a city, Minneapolis. He's closer to finding her than ever before but it's not quite that simple as the evidence seems to indicate that she is now somewhere in Florida. As he researches he does a tit for tat deal with a woman who runs a local homeless service - she's got the contacts he needs and she is trying to find a trusted young man who has just gone missing locally. But he's not the only one looking for Marc Cosadelli - a local gangster is also trying to find him. As the story progresses both cases take disturbing turns and, in the case of his daughter, Joe finds that he has been deceived over the years - vital evidence has been deliberately kept from him. In a way the book is in a holding pattern as, with about a third to go, it becomes clear that Joe will not be getting the answers to his questions. It's a very solid P. I. procedural with Joe always teetering on the brink of mayhem (and occasionally indulging in it!) 4 Stars.
Jeff Shelby has done it again! A brilliant thriller that rachets up the intensity and desperation in the search for Elizabeth!
Thread of Suspicion continues the heartbreaking story of Joe Tyler as he follows every lead to locate his missing daughter! The tears flow freely as the reader shares in the hunt to bring closure to an 8 year old nightmare every parent fears! This series grabs you and won't let go. The mesmerizing action never wanes as the pages seem to turn themselves! This gripping drama plays out breathlessly, and it's impossible to stop reading! The reader has to know what happens next, as hope drives the narrative. While ending in another cliffhanger, jeff Shelby's masterful storytelling is absolutely engrossing and can't be missed!
This book drug me through an emotional roller coaster kicking and screaming, trying to make time to read with a hectic schedule. So worth it, I love Joe and everything he stands for. When I hit the end of the book, I was so overwhelmed with emotion, I yelled “F$#a” on the bus. What a cliffhanger!
Loving this series! Can't stop reading. The suspense is just right and the story line is fantastic. I'd say more but I just purchased book 3 and I cant wait any longer to find out what's next!
This series will keep you interested from start to finish. The character development is good and the suspense will keep you guessing all the way through. I can’t wait to plunge into the next book of the series!
A stunning story. Excellent writing and plotting combined with surprises and great characters. I wish it was a cliffhanger ending — I would have bought the next volume anyway. Guess even writers have to make a living 😊.
A story of a couple whose child was abducted when she was eight. For ten years, this cop turned P.I. searches for missing kids while also searching for his daughter. Full of unexpected twists, heartache, romance, and mystery. I highly recommend this series.
Book 2 in the series continues as Joe searches for his daughter. He has just found a picture of her taken after her abduction that leads him to Minneapolis in his search. He helps a crime boss find his lost son and in return receives help in his own search.
I actually liked this one better than the first one -- and that doesn't often happen with me. The continuing story of looking for his daughter is excellent and the side "hunts" in this one are quite good as well. Looking forward to #3 when it is out ... must find out what happens!
Thread of Suspicion is another good Joe Tyler story. Ditto everything I said about the first book in this series. The author does need a good editor to correct his who/whom and lay/laid grammar errors.
This book is even better than the first one. I love how Jeff Shelby makes his characters come alive. His descriptions and imagery makes me feel like I'm right there with Joe Tyler. I cannot wait to read Book 3.
