I picked up this short story during a free promo and it slayed me! I think Robert Bevan's work calls for its own classification, Hack N' Slash Humor perhaps?
Zombie Attack!!! is short and sweet. Nothing is wasted. Nothing is superfluous--it gets right to the point of being entertaining.
There are no deeper meanings here, no messages. This is about remembering those incidents in our lives when we sat around with friends being wacky or all piled into the car for a late night joyride. If you had the immense fortune to be playing role playing games with said friends then you probably have your own incidents around the gaming table to recall.
Ahh yes, Bizzy Keelin the Ballistic Hobbit, I remember him well...and who was that guy we dubbed "Lawn Dart"? The guy who suddenly found himself falling head first from a great height, and when the game master asked what he did in response he proudly proclaimed, "I draw my two handed sword!"
This is another mini-story for fans of the characters in the full length novel ‘Critical Failures’. It probably works best if you’ve read that first, but there’s enough explanation within the story for first-timers to keep up. The idea is that a group of friends have become trapped in a real version of the roleplaying game 'Caverns and Creatures'. If you’ve ever thought it might be cool to be a half-orc barbarian or a dwarf healer or an elf sorcerer for real, this book is probably enough to put you off permanently. Or at least to convince you not to have a half-orc barbarian in the party unless you have a very strong stomach. But it’s riotously funny, if you don’t mind the bad language, the preponderance of vomit (and worse) and the gleeful descriptions of dangling intestines. Not deep, but an entertaining, albeit brief, read. Three stars.
Just in time for Halloween, Robert Bevan presents a new Caverns and Creatures mini-adventure (short story) featuring Tim, Dave, Julian and (of course) everyone's favorite half-orc, Cooper where they fight zombies!
As with each previous C&C novel / short story, Zombies Attack!! is filled with a wonderfully constructed world where people who thought they were "just playing a game" got sucked into the game world quiet literally. It also contains much of Robert's usual humor, and I'm pretty sure I laughed aloud at least ten times while reading this, which is quite impressive for something of this length. (I think Amazon estimates it at 36 pages?)
If you are looking for something fun, different and funny, Zombies Attack is yet another tale that comes highly recommended. Fans of old school tabletop gaming and comedic fantasy are in for a real treat with this one.
'Zombie Attack!!!' is a short story based on characters from the novel 'Critical Failures'. I hadn't read the novel before I read this but now I'm going to have to get it! Basically this is about a group of geeks stuck in a role playing game of the Dungeons & Dragons type.
I loved the sense of humour that was apparent right from the very beginning. I could not stop laughing at the voice throwing incident! The characters were excellent and the dialogue was just brilliant. My only complaint was that it stopped too soon, but I'm off to remedy that by grabbing the novel right now!
This was my first journey into the world of zombies and I'm glad that I had Robert Bevan as my guide. For those already familiar with his work, you will most definitely love his witty, edgy writing style which makes this book soar; for those not familiar with Bevan, all I've got to say is give him a read. You won't regret it!
If you dislike excessive vulgarity, don't bother reading this book.
If you can't relate with off the wall, juvenile humor in a book where the protagonists are brash and abrasive young men who are stuck in a Dungeons and Dragons style game, then don't bother reading this book.
Now then... With that out of the way - three words. Love this book. I do. It's not the wittiest book. It's not the deepest book. It's not even the longest book out there. It's 36 pages. And each one *is* VERY funny. If you have a gaming background, spent too much of your youth playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, then this is definitely a book for you.
There is absolutely nothing edifying about this book. Nothing deep or meaningful. It will likely offend a lot of people with the crude humor. This is just four idiots in a screwed up situation doing what they can to survive and royally screwing up even the simplest tasks while they're at it. And it works.
This, like many other series I've started to read, started with a completely different book. Still no clue why I find it hard to start a series on book one - but for this series especially, you won't miss much if you skip around. Looking forward to reading the rest.
A funny short that could easily be named "how not to hunt zombies". Great interaction and good characterisation during the action. With just enough Cooper odour to ward of the festive scents!
Kindle Unlimited, the writer definitely isn't 'right' but he is on ku, a few binge readings were in my future.

Not sure what current 4 pack price is, would need to check with amazon site, was 99 but been aw while. The 4 books listed above titled separately under the set. The smaller collections are listed on top of which this one is 1st of the first set as 6, but did list them in order AND with the individual stories in each one of those since covering the mini collections here. I read the 4 pack, then the collections, in order, not totally sure it would matter with this genre, but just in case did matter with the character development. Writer does list and say if you have the d6 (Caverns and Creatures collection 1) as collection would not need to reread this as it is the same Zombie Attack, which comes after Cave of the Kobolds in the set then then Orcs, Bears, and Assholes then Shipfaced on to Dungeon Crawl with the last of the set being The Creep on the Borderlands so read the first set and no need to read them all individually.
