I was very delighted when I found some Viking stories from my Library's shelf. The writer had very skillfully bound the myths into her writing but characters were quite one dimensioned and the protagonist in the book, Idun, suffered from a disturbingly hard inferiority complex, as I peeked into the #3 novel, I noticed the same thing continues there, so I did not even start the next book. Also the writing quality of the sex scenes were quite sloppy and there were loads of them in this book, almost an gormandizing amount.

They called having sex "poleing" in the Finnish version and I found that pretty disturbing cause first thought of "poleing" was putting up telephone poles rather than wild Viking love making. This book left a bit sloppy taste in my mouth and decided to leave this series of books for now. Not really my taste that a book is based on inferiority complex and with badly written "poleing" scenes. Of course it's a part of the culture then, but enough is enough and she could have put more time on the details to make the character and the scenes deeper.

I guess this felt too sloppy written and shallow to my taste, but it lightened up strong feelings in me and that's why the two stars.

Intressant, spännande och magisk. Vacker natur. Fantastisk

Very brutal and much more tragic than the previous book. Not an easy read at all, but I suppose this is what reality looks like. Still captivating and well written.

3 more to go.=)

Idun was an interesting character. Don't recommend if you want a happy story, though.

I'm really disappointed in this book because if it wasn't so annoying I would probably have really liked it. On paper everything about it is so cool: the concept, the storyline of this book and (seemingly) the series as a whole works, the characters, the casual roughness in the way Johanne writes dialog, the way she describes the world and the characters, and the magic. I like the juxtaposition between the matriarchal vanir and the patriarchal aesir, and how their different gods (a fertility god and war god, respectively) plays into this. But obviously there's a "however". I will start with a minor thing: sometimes the story is a bit boring, and I have to struggle through the long chapters. I don't think a story has to be perfect and as long as most of the book is interesting I don't mind parts of it being a bit slow. Two bigger issues are that a lot of the main characters are a bit annoying and that there's just so much rape undertones or straight up rape. The issue with rape is especially prevalent with the aesir, which I suppose is a choice Johanne made because it's a patriarchal society where women don't have much power or believability. The obvious example is Idun, who's abused but not believed, and later after while heavily pregnant she had to be rescued from her abusive husband, Tor still almost believes the husband when he says that Idun is just crazy, despite having seen for his own eyes the bruises and how terrified Idun is of her husband. Despite having seen his mom being treated the same way. Like wtf, he cares for his daughter and he's not dumb, why would he fall for that? And maybe Johanne is trying to make a point or maybe she's going for believability (in a story with magic and gods…) but it's just so frustrating. Tor and Freja reunite and it's all ruined by Tor thinking of raping Freja. I get that they had a rough ending in the last book, with Freja leaving him and the whole deal with Oden, and I get that even back then part of the reason Freja left him was because he would never view her as anything other than property, but why would I want them to end up together? Anytime they had a tender moment all I could think about was the fact that Tor wanted to straight up rape Freja. He's obviously supposed to be a complicated character but how am I supposed to root for him? Frej, who again, is supposed to be at least a mildly good person, orchestres for his niece to get raped by his son. And even in vanaheim: Gefjyn and Sigrids relationship has a huge power imbalance and Gefjyin has absolutely no respect for Sigrid whatsoever, treats her like shit, but I'm supposed to root for that relationship? Sigrid is just fine with it? At the end they have sex and Sigrid basically says that she's in charge in the bedroom, and that's supposed to fix their whole relationship? So yeah, just a lot of rapey undertones and straight up rape. This also feeds into the character being annoying, but isn't the only reason their annoying. Freja I can mostly forgive because she gets better after her awakening, and before that it was on purpose. Idun… throughout most of the book she was so uninteresting and when she finally got interesting Johanne killed her. Thanks.

This was basically just me ranting and giving as many spoilers as possible. With time I will probably forget all the bad things about the book and like it, but for now… it's just eh.

OMG, this book!!!! For me, this was a real emotionell rolercoaster. At times I was furious, dissapointed, happy and in the end I even managed to cry my eyes out. It was really good. A story about the norse gods and goddesses before they became the gods and godesses we know today. The story of their life of love, anger, sadness, fighting and losing.

The storyline of this book was very good, and as said before it got me very emotionall more than once. Mostly it was of anger because of the abuse against women and children and the sexist way they were speaking to each other.

I really liked the character Idun, how she had every thing againsted her and still managed to see to good in everyone and everything. I was a bit annoyed when she found out who her husband really was, but I know the situation a bit myself and know that it's not so easy when you are by yourself. Freja och Thor I had a hard time getting around to in the beginning. Both of them just felt heartless and cold, just doing what they needed to get what they wanted and not caring who got in their way.

Another aspect I really enjoey was the implementation of female x female romance. It wasn't a very big part of the story but it was there and it was reallt sweet.

To sum this up, Idun - The story of Valhalla gets 4,5/5 from me. I really liked it and if you like norse mythology and can cope with the emotionall rolercoaster then it might be for you. Be aware of the foul language though and the sexist way they tend to speak to each other in.

Jeg kunne godt have gjort noget mere variation i sproget generelt.

I liked the story. I liked Idun, and found most of the other characters interesting as well. The plot was simple on one level, but still unpredictable. I'm the kind of person who usually guesses the ending by the time I've reached the midpoint, so it was nice not having that happen, for a change.
The world-building is pretty good; the links to the Norse mythology, intriguing.

I would have given the book 3, maybe 4 stars if it weren't for the excessive sex scenes. Seriously. Every time I read another, I thought "this must surely be the last?"... and it wasn't. Not until it was, anyway. But that was after a fair number of them.
I know from reading other reviews that I'm not the only person who reacted negatively to this.

Once again it's hard to think something about this book but I liked it, I think. It's a book you just want to continue read even if you don't lke what's happening. IThe characters are a bit special and I don't like them very much but I'm getting to kow them which makes me like how they act like expected. I know them and even if I don't like them, I like to read about them. this may sound a bot confusing, and it is but I'm a bit confused over what to think of this but my overall feeling is that I lliked it.

It's good, but not as good as the first book which was amazing. This was so dark, so grim. It was horrible for Idun and me. I wanted more magic and culture things, this was mostly just violence. This took me two months to read. At least there were some hope left in the end but I don't know how long it will take. I still want to try the third part.

In Idun, the saga combining historical fiction and Norse mythology continues. Idun is in this story the daughter of Frøya and Thor, and given the name of the book you would think it would be about her. But the author never really builds her up as a character, and instead concentrates on her parents which character traits are growing much worse that in the first book. Idun hasn’t inherited any of her mother’s gifts, meaning that she hasn’t any superstitious powers, and is basically just a normal, insecure person. I wish the author would have evolved her character more, so that we as readers actually could feel a connection with her, but she was only a side character through the whole book. Of course, she gets a daughter in the end of book to bring the family inheritance on, and the next book is supposed to be about her. I have to wait until the library reopens to get it, but I think I might continue the series just to see where the story goes.

The saga of Valhal continues in the second book of the series, where we follow Freja, Tor and their daughter Idun.

I've read this book a long time ago, but the heartbreak is just as raw and yes, I sobbed more or less thought out the entire book, at the unfairness of it all and especially Idun's fate. The one who thought she was loved by no one, turned out to be the most loved of all. Just wow. I had hoped for a better and more happy end for her, but her fate had already been written. I hate that ALL those who should have protected her didn't.

This story is fantasy, but with bits and pieces from reality and of course viking saga at its finest - or should i say at it's very darkest. Despite this darkness and heartbreak, I really did enjoy the book, sinply because i've found myself so caught up in the story, that it seemed so real and for me there is nothing better when reading a work of fiction.

Looking at the title you might mistakenly think this book is about Idun, Freya's and Thor's daughter. It isn't. Idun never gets a chance to grow into a whole character, she's reduced into a plot point in her parents tale as are other characters too.

That shouldn't be a problem, because I loved Freya, but years have changed her into something unrecognisable. I guess the power and might of the Moon goddess, and personal sacrifices can do that to a woman, but this tragedy too is downplayed into lunacy.

The story ends up being about no one and everyone. Most of all Idun is about Scandinavian bronze age and the legends they left behind. The world is disturbingly real, but it's not enough. This reworking of old Nordic myths needs more character.
