An action-packed mythology series from master storyteller Tony Abbott! The underworlds are rising -- and no one is safe. Loki is waging war, and Pinewood Bluffs is about to become his battlefield. Owen, Dana, Jon, and Sydney know they have to stop him. They'll do whatever it takes. But when they stow away in Loki's sledge and emerge in a new, mysterious underworld they know nothing about, things get complicated. The Babylonian underworld is dark as night and full of vicious monsters, including the dreaded Scorpion King. Will Owen and his friends ever make it back to Pinewood Bluffs?
Tony Abbott (born 1952) is an American author of children's books. His most popular work is the book series The Secrets of Droon, which includes over 40 books. He has sold over 12 million copies of his books and they have been translated into several other languages, including Italian, Spanish, Korean, French, Japanese, Polish, Turkish, and Russian. He has also written the bestseller Firegirl.
Abbott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1952. His father was a university professor and had an extensive library of books which became one of Abbott's first sources of literature. When he was eight years old, his family moved to Connecticut where he went through elementary school and high school.
Abbott attended the University of Connecticut, and after studying both music and psychology, decided to study English and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in English literature. He attended the workshops of Patricia Reilly Giff to further develop his writing after college.
Abbott currently lives in Trumbull, Connecticut, with his wife, two daughters, and two dogs. Tony had one brother and two sisters.
The 3rd book in the Underworlds series. Owen, Dana, Jon, and Sydney have followed Loki into the Babylonian Underworld in an attempt to keep him from gaining control over the Babylonian monsters in his quest to set fire to Midguard (Earth), destroy Odin, and become ruler of Asgard. In order to stop him, they must fight each of the monsters on their way up the tower to get the stones that control them and keep them from Loki. Can four children manage to do what so many heroes have failed? And what happens if they can't?
Another fast-paced adventure book for younger readers. Nick continues to love the series and taking delight in telling me to catch-up. Again, a great fun read for those who are just getting into chapter books and want something with action and adventure.
This one was much better. I was afraid with book#2 that I would have to give up the series. Fortunately this was not true. This book had a lot of good action and the story is taking shape quite nicely. Looking forward to book #4
This one gets points alone for using Babylonian mythology which is something I find rather rare. Aside from that, it's another quick paced installment, and things are obviously gearing up for the final installment of the series... but it did some address some plot related questions that I kept asking (a bit exasperatedly) to myself since the second one. Characters are still on the flat side, you tend to forget Jon and Sydney are hanging out on the sidelines, and some reveals are a bit laughable (Dana being the only one who knows about the Big Secret, but why on earth her parents would tell it to her as a child makes little to no sense to me...) but I tried real hard to view this through a children's novel lens rather than a typical novel lens.
So, despite my gripes, I can still see this being a book that easily grabs a young reader's attention and gets them hyped for more. Especially for reluctant readers, I guess.
You should provably read the first two books in the series, but it's not absolutely necessary. I recommend you start with the first book. All of the books in the series are very short; the first three books are less than sixty pages long. The action moves along very quickly, and the whole series can be read like one average-length book. It's a great series for readers who enjoy adventure but don't want to take weeks to finish a book.
