Picture this ladies..you have met the perfect guy. If you wrote out a list of what you wanted..well..this guy would pretty much have all of those qualities. You are so happy.

Then the terror starts.

Oh..nothing like direct in your face abuse..nothing you can PROVE. More like little hostile things..an inability to respect your boundaries..strange gifts that are more creepy then sweet. Feeling like someone has been..close to you. At the place where you work. Repeated requests for sex that are..well..a little out there.

You know in your gut something is wrong. Maybe you don't want to see this guy anymore. Your gut is SCREAMING at you!

But nobody believes you.

Not your friends, not your coworkers. "But he's so nice" they say. "And you were so crazy about him."

What is going on you think? Is it me? Could it be me? No..its him . But NOBODY BELIEVES ME.

That is the premise of this book. It is a chilling, powerful and utterly terrifying book that I'd highly recommend..just please be aware it is pretty scary.

But the book itself was spectacular. And so way ahead of it's time. It was written long before the internet came into our lives and I first read it many years ago, well before the age of computers.

One really wonders, how this book would be shaped, were it written now during the age of the internet and social media. I am sure it would be even more frightening.

But I really loved this book about Lynn, the talk show host, who is being stalked by her own boyfriend and nobody believes her. I found the writing to be fierce and forceful, character development was fantastic and the story was intense and absorbing. I could not put the book down.

I would have given this a 5. It IS a 5 in most ways. However..this book has two very unappealing horrible scenes of animal murder and I always take off a star for any book that does that. It was so not needed in this book. Actually it is NEVER needed in any book but they still keep doing it anyway. In thrillers or mysteries usually, if there is an animal in the story, it will be killed. And really who needs that. Write the book without it! This book was scary enough, I mean the rabid raccoon and so many other things.

SPOILERS: STOP READING IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW HOW IT ENDS:

I LOVED the character of Mike, the hard nosed cop with the heart of gold. And I never expected the second twist which somehow did come off as realistic in its way. This novel was written awhile ago when twists were not quite as popular. I think they were done better back then too.

In any case..4 stars. A very good book.

Yes, it's paperback trash and early 90s' trash at that, but it's expertly crafted and defied expectations for its own tropes. Late 80s, early 90s mass market books tended to incorporate a parade of characters, subplots and switching pov chapters into a tapestry of overlapping fate and irony and I really enjoyed that approach here. Lynn's deteriorating stability and regression into paranoia and drug abuse carries the tension, but all her co-workers, loved ones and the villain bring their own interpretations and competing priorities into the fray to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Something I didn't expect was the particularly mean-spirited psychosis of Greg, the psycho ex-lover. I went into this thinking it would be a "If I can't have you, no one can!" kind of obsessive, possessive infatuation, but it's actually quite a bit more complicated and unique when you get into Greg's warped headspace. The reality is it has nothing whatsoever to do with love or lust. He gets off on being a puppet master of sorts over his lover's lives - humiliation, submission, and generally upending their lives and their reputations so that they are permanently marked by his destructive courting. He was sickening and gleeful and I hated him and rooted for his slow, painful death.

The second thing that went against expectation is that there is a last third surprise villain that took the floundering tension right back up to a ten and kept me guessing. Lynn has so many friends and aquaintances that would have a motive to fuck with her that it was intense tracking who was behind it!

There is a more upbeat romantic subplot with the detective that I could take or leave, but it didn't get in the way of the pacing much. If I had one complaint, it would be that for how dark and unwravled Lynn's life gets, the ending fast forwards to a mega happy wedding ending that doesn't answer any questions about what became of her show's precarious pilot and whether or not all her awful friends that doubted her sufficiently groveled. I wanted the satisfaction of everyone awkwardly apologizing, dammit!

Quite a good thriller which keeps you entertained right to the end - just when you think it's all over something else happens!

Lynn, & indeed all her friends, believe she's finally found her perfect man but sadly the man of her dreams becomes the man of nightmares. Lynn's frustration at not being believed about Greg comes over well & the characters are well written & credible.

Overall a pretty good book. The ending was shite though. It just felt rushed. Like the author couldn’t wait to finish this fucking book and get on with another one. I liked the plot twist though, don’t get me wrong (that shit was amazing. Didn’t see it coming), but it just felt like the author could have spent a little more time on certain parts of the book.

This was a bit of a random find - a book that had made it into my boss' collection and that had never been read - but from the blurb it seemed like something out of an episode of Law and Order (a show I quite enjoy) so I thought "why not?"

It's a hard subject to read about, especially as a female.. and seeing this type of behaviour described in black and white is a helluva lot more confronting than watching Law and Order, but I thought it was pretty well done.

Some of the behaviours within some of the friendships were a bit difficult to believe - the phrase "with friends like this who needs enemies" popped into my head on more than one occasion but overall I had trouble putting the book down.

This used to be one of my favourite books, but while I still really enjoyed it, I found myself noticing more of its flaws this time around, and so ended up downgrading the rating from 5 stars to 4 stars. At the end of the day, it was just too sensationalistic (yes, that's a word ;) ) for me to be able to take it completely seriously.

Still, it's a good read, full of twists and turns to the very end.

did not have a synopsis available when I chose this title. I used a feature recommendation from other items read.
Not a dislike of author or their abiliity but difficult topic/subject/character situation.
