“It was a classic,age-old story.Girl with sucky superpower of tracking demons through psychic visions needs protection from aforementioned demons and their ravenous attempts to flay her alive, but she doesn't want to arouse the suspicion of her thankfully clueless family.”
“Has anyone ever mentioned that you bicker like old women?”Rose asked.
“Sixty-seven times”,Jayden said.
“I'm on a mission.Maybe you can help.Did you happen to see a stunning redhead?Tall, leggy.I call her my goddess of a girlfriend.”
“What’s wrong with her?”
“Nothing.” I ran over and snaked an arm around his neck. “Especially now that you’re here, sugar lips.”
My fingers slid into his hair, pulling his mouth against mine. He tasted yummy. Minty. And all mine. But he pulled away.
I planted a bunch of kisses on his face and neck. “Helloooo, gorgeous.”
Blake said, “She must think you’re me.”
“Which one did you give her?” he asked Matthias.
At the sight of me, Matthias shut down the indulgent smile that always surfaced around Selena. “Pride and Prejudice.”
“I love that one,” Blake said. “Heathcliff and Elizabeth were made for each other.”
“Let’s do this.”
“Do what?”
“I’m going to kiss you.”
“Whoa!” My hands flew into the air and I moved to escape. “This is stupid.”
He blocked my path. “Hold on. Not stupid at all. You have a valid point, just give me a minute.” He rolled his shoulders, shook out his arms, rocked on the balls of his feet a few times, took a deep breath, and exhaled slowly. “Okay. I’m ready.”
I frowned. “You have to gear-up to kiss me?”
“Protect yourself!” I said. “They won’t hurt me because they’re working with Rose!”
The closest hound lunged at my throat.
I kicked its head sideways. “Never mind! You can help!”
The demons converged.
My own irritation with his behavior started to dissipate. Because his anger wasn’t an element, it was a compound. See, I pay attention in science. An emotional compound of fear, helplessness, and hurt because I didn’t trust him.
“Mom, this isn’t what it looks like.”
Mom put her hand on her hip. “It looks like a group of boys wrestling on the floor of your bedroom while you watch. Wearing a towel.”
“Okay,” I admitted, “it is what it looks like, but it’s not—”
“Sexual?” She raised her eyebrows.
“Mom!”
Luna stuck her head under Mom’s arm and sucked in a breath. “She’s gone from a love triangle to a kinky sex pentagon.”

Blake lifted his head. “Vote for Team Blake!"
“Stop being a baby,” Blake stepped into the room. “We’re perfectly safe.”
Something clanked. Blake yelped, lifted me in front of his chest, and peeked around for danger.
Logan ducked under the gate. “It’s just me.”
I glared at Blake. “Are you seriously using me as a human shield?”
His laughter rumbled low, slithering heat underneath my skin. I pulled him to me, backing him against the table, risking a literal firestorm as his lips laid upon mine with a burning promise of—
“That’s how babies are made!”
I reeled back and knocked over a chair. “Aunt M!”
“Sex kills!”
“M, seriously.” Mom walked into the kitchen and rolled her eyes.
My aunt patted her belly. “It killed my waistline.”
“Satellite phone. Big difference. But…fine. Sorry.” Aunt M didn’t sound sorry. “This pregnancy is frying my motherboard. And speaking of babies—”
Here it comes.
“—that’s what parking with your boyfriend leads to, Aurora. Save yourself the agony. My bladder will never be the same.”
“I’m not parking with my boyfriend!” I screeched.
“Make sure to bleed a lot.”
“Grandma!” Tristan paled.
“What? I said bleed a lot, not bleed out.”
“What did you touch?”
“Are you going to spray everything for cooties?”
His pale eyes narrowed. “Maybe.”
“Then I touched everything.”
“So, about Aurora?”
“Not sure,” Mom snapped. “You made her cry the other day. I don’t like that.”
I cringed.
“Neither do I, ma’am.”
“But you fixed it?”
“I believe so.”
“Mm-hmm.” Mom sounded skeptical. “If it happens again, I may start removing body parts.” Pause. “Meaning yours.”
I blushed. “You know, maybe I meant more that you seemed...uninterested. In, ah, in ahhh,” I moved my palm in circles in the air in front of me.
He lifted one brow. “Uninterested in your…chest?”
“What?” I realized my hand had been circling right over my boobs. Nice move, Aurora. I rolled my eyes. Was he playing with me? Didn’t matter. “No! Not…that!”
“Good.” His dark eyes glittered with amusement. “Because I can assure you I find your chest very interesting. At times, downright mesmerizing.”
Ayden and I stared. Crickets chirped. Ducks quacked. Swans honked. And even an owl hooted.
“Uhhh,” I finally mustered after I lifted my jaw off the ground. “Is he supposed to be able to do that?”
“Rose stood in the last faint beams of sunset.
“Whoa!”
“Is he wearing a leather cat suit?”
“Holy Mother!"
“Dude!”
The guys all quickly averted their eyes and raised their hands to further block any chance of catching a view. Anything to not see Rose in his painted-on leather one-piece that left absolutely nothing to the imagination.
“Stunning, right?” Rose spread his palms as far as the cuffs would allow.
“Oh, I’m stunned.” Ayden looked ill.
Aurora: He was tall, well-built. Broad shoulders.
Blake: Like me, babe?
Aurora: Not that big.
Blake: Yeah, didn't think so. No one ever is.
Ayden: Sounds like you need a hug which, being your official boyfriend, I'm contractually obligated to provide.
