Pig has a plan and it's very simple--he's going to doze in the mud in blissful silence. However, that silence is broken by all his friends who are being VERY LOUD. This irritates, frustrates, and angers Pig. However, the reason they're being loud is that they are preparing a surprise birthday party for Pig. This is a paperback easy reader, written at guided reading level B. Finding books for this reading level is challenging, and finding fun books even more so. Beginning readers will enjoy pig's problem, and appreciate Ethan Long's bright and very expressive illustrations.

(Beginning Readers) This book will work great for beginning readers because it has very little, but important words on each page. For example, each page contains sight words that beginning readers could see, like wants, nap to, pop, tap, hum, bop, and can. The book contains words that sound exactly like they look, no tricks or letters that make different sounds. Although students should not use pictures as crutches, a lot of the pictures support the sentence on the page. Also, each sentence has 4 words in it. Each sentence has “wants to” in between two sight words, making a pattern that early readers can pick up on. This book would be great to start readers off with, building their confidence and skills.

Long, Ethan. Pig Has a Plan, PICTURE BOOK. Holiday House, 2012. $3.99.

Pig really wants to take a nap, but all the other animals on the farm are making such a racket. He can’t get any rest with all their hammering, sawing, mixing, and popping. He decides to stick his head in the mud so he can sleep, just as the other animals are revealing a surprise birthday celebration just for him.

This is an early reader book with emphasis on sound and animal words. It’s done well enough considering that early reader books can sometimes be dull.

Pig has a plan to take a nap, but animal friends are busing doing something which interrupts pig’s plan. It turns out that the friends prepare a surprise party for Pig.
The story is simple and short but must be suitable for young children, beginning readers, and English language learners to learn a language. The recursive and expected sentences would provide children to guess action words such as pop, hum, and sip. Illustrations were done with bright colors which increase vibrant moods of the animals who prepare for a birthday party of Pig.

Beginning readers will enjoy watching Pig in action in this short but humorous book. All he wants to do is take a nap, but the rest of the animals are so noisy that doing so is impossible. As they make preparations to surprise him with a birthday party, he puts together a device that allows him to block out the noise and still breathe while hidden in his mud puddle. Clearly, Pig cares more about resting than partying.

My initial reaction to this book was that it was an easy read, though a bit dull. But then I noticed that burgers are being served at this birthday party for farm animals, with cows in attendance. That's pretty ed up, dude.

Don't be fooled by the bright colors and simple language. This is a dark and disturbing book. Not for children.

Pig is so tired he wants to have a nap, but there is so much activity going on among the other farm animals that he can’t sleep. When Pug finally figures out a way to nap, the reader finds out what all the other animals were up to. Funny story and illustrations.

In Pig Has a Plan by Ethan Long, Pig just wants to nap, but his freinds are being too noisy. But why?

Long's colorful, humorous illustrations were created with Black Prismacolor colored pencils on a bristol board and colored digitally on a Mac. While much of the action is described, some preparations are only shown in the pictures, as with the sheep. The actions of the cat had me in hysterics, while the cow's gab fest is hilarious. Animals shown include pig, fly, hen, cow, mice, cat, dog, rat, hog, sheep, & pup. My favorite images are endpapers, gab, pop, mix, hum, sip, plan and last two pictures.

I feel exactly like Pig concerning noise, so that concept really connnected with me. I have to give Long huge credit for making me laugh out loud every time I read this. The cartoon-like characters are perfect in this cumulative tale, which is excellent for beginning readers, having just 26 mostly short, simple words. The well conceived humor is developed from the illustrations and pig's increasing frustration with the noise. The surprise, for pig and some readers, at the end, is satisfying for all, and worth celebrating. A great storytime choice, with many noises to repeat, this is highly recommended for school and public library collections.

For ages 2 to 6, animals, cumulative, farm, predicting, birthday, beginning reader, naps, noise, humor, surprise, and fans of Ethan Long.

Very simple text. One 4-word sentence on each double page. Lots of repetition. Each one has a different farm animal doing a different activity. The animals are humanized in a cartoonish way. Excellent for the youngest children.

Pig wants to take a nice long nap. But all the other animals in the barnyard are making loads of noise. Eventually pig figures out just how he can take a nap…only to discover that the noise was all for one very good purpose. This is yet another great book by Ethan Long. With the simple words and large, clear text young readers will enjoy learning how to read using this book. Also, the illustrations are just super humorous. The pig’s frustrated expression gets more and more desperate as the story progresses. The small details in the other animals will bring about giggles. (Seriously, a rat is using a hand mixer while a dog has scuba-like goggles on while hammering together a picnic bench. And someone should seriously pay attention to the cow talking on the phone while writing in a notepad while tight-rope walking on a fence post.) Readers and their grownups will appreciate the sophisticated story disguised in a few words and whimsical expressions. This is one to be read over and over again.

All Pig wants to do is take a nap, but everyone else on the farm is making too much noise. When Pig comes up with a unique solution to his problem, all of his farm friends surprise him. Wonderfully vibrant illustrations and simple text make this a great emergent reader. Young readers will come back again and again to show their succesful accomplishment in reading this book.

All the farm animals are busy doing noisy activities while Pig just wants some peace and quiet so he can take a nap. In the end, Pig devises a simple tool to allow him to breathe under the mud and get the rest he needs, but he's in for a surprise. A surprise birthday party that is! A very simple easy reader title in which the pictures very closely match the text. Yooung readers will gain confidence and skills on a title like this one and pre-readers will be able to tell the story by looking at the pictures.

This book was a short simple book, but I did enjoy reading it. I enjoyed how the author related each of the farm animals to a sound that they were doing, each of the sounds well represented each of the animals. While reading this book, I could imagine myself as the pig since we all love our naps and when we can't nap its very frustrating! The book ends with the pig finally solving his problem until he is woken up by his fellow friends that all along were throwing him a surprise birthday party. Cute fun story that I recommend!

The I Can Read series published by Holiday House are picture book sized beginner readers. Pig Has a Plan has four word sentences per each two page spread with site words repeated through the book to create a humorous story. The illustrations are bright and cartoonish. Other books in the I Can Read series move readers as abilities increase. I recommend checking out the I Can Read series for your beginner reader.

"Pig Has a Plan" is a goofy book to read to young ones. It is about a pig who wants to sleep and all the other animals are on the farm are making noise. Finally when the pig comes up with a plan to sleep, they all shout "Happy Birthday Pig!" and pig is sleeping. This is such a cute book explaining how everything happens for a reason, and if things don't go our way, they will still work out somehow. This was such a fun book on a bad day, I give it 5 stars for bringing my mood up!

To me, Pig has a Plan can be for children around the ages of 3-4. This was mostly a picture book with little writing, which made for very easy reading. Pig Has A Plan was just about farm animals making too much noise for the pigs birthday party, so consequently the pig was unable to take his nap. This book has many details to point out when reading to a child. Also whoever is reading to the child can ask simple questions about what is going on in each picture.
