The New Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley #10

The Case of the Great Elephant Escape

Rate this book
Where in the world could someone hide an elephant? That's what Ashley and I had to find out. The circus was in town, and their newest star -- Maysie, the baby elephant-was missing

It was our biggest mystery yet

We had to find Maysie before show time -- which was only two hours away

No problem. It shouldn't be too hard to find something that weighs a ton, right?

I wish the authors would quit reminding us of their grandma and the girls' mystery agency run out of their attic at the beginning of every single book, like the books are standalones. It's a series and readers can keep up with those minor details.

It was a bit much that Lakeisha recognized their business card as the agent she saw on a website. That's a bit much to have kids on a public forum like that. Lakeisha was a girl their age in charge of walking with a baby elephant in the parade.

The next day Maysie was discovered missing and Lakeisha hadn't told anyone because she didn't want to worry them. Good thinking...Mary Kate and Ashley had until that night at show time to find Maysie. Short deadline.

Lakeisha's little sister was an immediate suspect for me but the girls didn't think anything of her either way. She was supposed to iron the elephant costumes but she didn't and she was grouchy and snapped at Lakeisha, insisting she could find her missing elephant charm herself. Clearly a disgruntled worker not happy that her sister got to do the fun stuff while she had to do the menial work.

The actual first suspect was really lame. Clue was supposed to be tracking Maysie but of course she had a cold and was sneezing a lot and couldn't smell right. She ran into a clown and he told them Maysie had ruined his outfit last night and they thought that was motive to get rid of Maysie. He made a comment about the clowns being the biggest stars, not the elephants which made them think he was jealous. I wasn't buying it.

Clue kept leading them to the wrong things, her nose out of order. One of which was the terrier act where they heard a woman telling her dogs that she'd taken care of everything and they would be the best animals in the circus now. Again, too obvious. The obvious ones are never the suspects.

Lakeisha absolved Marlon because when they told her about the bucket of peanuts he has, Lakeisha said those are for his act. But she said elephants don't like peanuts, they prefer fruit, so it put them on the trail of the acrobat who'd had a bag of fruit. When questioned he said he hated fruit but it's all he was eating today because he eats too much circus food.

The goose chase, or elephant chase, continued and they encountered baby elephant tracks at Otto's trailer. But Clue led them back to Clyde Big's trailer and they realized she was leading them all over because Maysie had been all over. She wouldn't leave Clyde's trailer so they retraced their steps without her. Zina had Maysie's baby bonnet but she said the delivery boy delivered it to her instead of the dog costumes and asked them to return it to Lakeisha's family.

Mary Kate remembered what Zina had said about Clyde being sick and going home, and something had been sleeping in his bed when they'd looked in his trailer. Clue had been right all along.

Sure enough, Maysie was sleeping in Clyde's bed with his cap on. It was far-fetched to have a baby elephant sleeping on a bed, inside a trailer, even if it was a giant's trailer. Kala's missing charm was inside the stack of hay so they finally figured out it was Kala. I knew it was her from the first moment she entered the story so it took away any little suspense the story might have had. It sucks waiting for the characters to catch up to what you've already figured out. And this series almost always has the culprit be the person who was there but not even on the suspect list. It's never one of the obvious choices with evidence and everything pointing to their guilt; it's the person who wasn't even in the running, so it makes them predictable once you learn this pattern. The authors should have switched it up every now and then.

Kala admitted to being jealous and she wanted to keep Maysie out of opening night so she could be the baby of the family again and the star. Lakeisha said she didn't know Kala was feeling so bad. She was mad at her but understood why she did it and she was sorry Kala felt so bad. She even hugged her. That little brat didn't deserve that. She should've been taught a lesson.

Even worse, Lakeisha let Kala ride Maysie and she rode Maysie's mom. She did not deserve that after the stunt she pulled! And they had the two elephants come up to Ashley and Mary Kate for them to ride.

Definitely not one of their best. It's outdated in the circus theme with people making the elephants dance and twirl to music and the family riding them. Of course it was down to the wire with the girls not finding the elephant until less than an hour before show time. I didn't enjoy the mystery itself because we knew the elephant was on the grounds because the circus area is closed down at a certain time, so everything took place right there. It was a lot of back and forth and running around. Clue was right the whole time and it sucks that they thought she was sick and didn't trust her nose.

I like continuing reading the old New Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley books. I remember reading these as a kid and loving them a lot. They are a bit corny, but I mean it was early 2000s and these were kids books. I still want to continue on with the ones I own right now.

A whole bunch of these came in at once from the library, so time for an MK&A read-a-thon! I'm pretty impressed that I've been able to handle so many of these, to be honest.

Though, this one was legitimately pretty cute.
