This was cute. Deceptive cover because the heroine looks like an invalid in this. However, she is not. She is one of Barbara Cartland’s spunky amusing ones.
The Hero, although a lord, is quite impoverished. Even if he has a grand estate with many treasures, everything is entailed and he has no other income since the farms on his land have been doing so badly.
After coming home from the war, he goes to inspect his estate and finds the heroine camping out in one of the bedrooms. She has run away from her evil uncle who wants to marry her off to his son.
The Hero is at first upset, but he is sympathetic to her plight. He resolves to either try to make her return home, or to find a solution for her since she cannot stay unchaperoned in his house. However, since he finds her companionship amusing, he constantly puts off having to send her elsewhere. So they end up spending a lot of time together.
There is a nasty OW who refuses to take No from the Hero, but the heroine saves the day.
The Hero and heroine finally confess their love and although the Hero wants to marry her, he is hesitant because he cannot support a wife and family.
The evil uncle finally finds the heroine, and accuses the Hero of kidnapping an heiress for his own interests. The hero is very offended but he punches the uncle and sends him away.
The heroine is distraught because although they love each other she now fears, that, because of his pride, the Hero will not marry her now.
Suddenly, one of his solicitors arrives from London, because apparently an embassy wants to rent his London house (which was also entailed) for a generous amount. Furthermore, while he is there they find a few very valuable items which are not part of the entail, which the Hero can sell.
The Hero is now happy to ask the heroine to marry him since he can now support a wife, even if she has a lot of money of her own.
Oh evil uncle? Not to worry, the solicitor says he was a bit delayed coming over because there was an accident and the gentleman was thrown over the bridge and drowns. His description fits that of the uncle. 😏
Just love how Dame Cartland ties up all the loose ends 😂

Cute story and quick read. One of Cartland's quick and simple writes. As so many of her 700+ books are no angst, just a couple hour feel-good romance for an evening when you just want something quick and easy.
Oh, dear... What should I say about this book? If you more into science fictions, this book won't satisfied you. Another word for: I don't like it!". Sorry...
I read a lot of BC's books and one thing I liked about this one is that the 2 love birds protagonists spent a lot of time together providing us many romantic moments.
On his return after six years’ fighting with the Duke of Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars, Colonel Romney Wood, who has just become Lord Heywood, is horrified at the state of the country he left behind, where agricultural labourers are now starving, food shops are bare and Luddites lay waste new agricultural machinery. Worse still his own estate is almost bankrupt and he has to find something to sell to save it and his loyal staff from penury. He is considerably hampered because his grandfather has legally entailed everything of value onto future generations of Lord Heywoods and so he cannot dispose of virtually anything without the Trustees’ approval, which he knows will not be forthcoming. Scouring Heywood Abbey, his country home, for possible items to sell, he is astonished when he stumbles across something he is soon to prize beyond price – a beautiful, fawn-like young girl with deep blue eyes in a white diaphanous nightgown. She is an interloper and a runaway, hiding from her wicked uncle, who is forcing her into marriage with a man she despises. Her name is Lalita. But more than that she will not tell Lord Heywood. Yet slowly she reveals more of herself to him – and with each revelation the bond between them grows. And in spite of himself Lord Heywood is falling in love. They are two people with nothing left to lose and maybe only love to win.
