Eleven-year-old Esmie is on the hunt for a new mum. Her own mother died when she was just a baby, and her father is still heartbroken over it. Plus he works far too much and hasn’t gone out in ages. By Esmie’s reckoning he needs help—whether he’s asked for it or not.
So Esmie, her older brother Matthew, and their French nanny, Juliette, place an advert in the Lonely Hearts column of the newspaper. But what they’re looking for and what Esmie’s father is looking for might not be the same thing. Just whose hunt is this anyway?
You can look at the cover to see in two seconds that this isn't going to be deep, dark, or life-changing. However, it was a little bit more than fluff. The characters have a few moments where good advice is given, or when a little light bulb goes off, and they realize something about their motives. For example, Esmie discovers that she is neglecting her dad's feelings, in her hunt-of-sorts for a new mom -- she was only considering whether she liked the potential new mom, and not taking into account what her dad thought. And their nanny has a lot of the best lines, urging the dad out of his comfort zone and not letting him remain resigned to be lonely forever.
Listening to this book was fun because of the British English, and also the French accent of the nanny. My kids would often try to imitate what she said.
This was honestly amazing. I thrifted this book for less than a dollar a few months ago only because I liked the cover (I swear mine looks different than the one listed on Goodreads).
First of all, the cover I have portrays Esmie, our protagonist, hugging the picture of her Mom, surrounded by various pictures of different women - which makes much more sense plot-wise.
Story-wise, it's a really good book! It mixes comedy with some hints of drama, which I personally enjoyed really much! It got me from happy and sad and then back around in no time.
What I really enjoyed is how the story is written. It really feels like an eleven year old wrote the book, which is exactly how it's supposed to be like since it is supposed to be Esmie's POV.
Almost every character is well-defined with certain characteristics and act like their respective age. I often found myself mixed with confusion and anger at some of Esmie and Matthew's actions until I remembered - they're literally kids. That's how well they were written.
In case you know yourself enjoying this kind of books, add "The Mum Hunt" to your "Want to read" collection - you'll probably enjoy it!
Well, it's such a great book! I liked it because I had a lot of fun reading it and also I learned new things! I really liked the book! I can't give it 5 stars out of 5 cause it wasn't something that special and it wasn't like my fave book ever but I've read worse books so...I can admit that it was such an amazing book! I love reading books written by this author! It's a pretty funny story how I discovered this author! Let me explain you: The first book that I've ever read from her I bought it like a mistake (I dropped it from the bookshelf if the bookshop and I just liked the front cover so I decided to buy it). I really liked that book so...from that day on I was reading a lot from this author! It was such a great experience and it was first time in my life when I did that! I love having new experiences and trying new things (by the way, that's how I discovered GOODREADS so...that's me!) OK guys I kiss U and I love U all! Bye!
Ia ingin ibu sungguhan!
amazing story about an 11 years old girl Esmie, together with her brother Matthew and their french nanny, Juliette; hunting for a potential girlfriend for their dad who still heartbroken over their mother death 11 years ago.
inspired by the sound of music, Esmie realise that their nanny is more like a mother to them. but Juliette is actually more like a Mary Poppin, pulling their family together and urging their dad out of his comfort zone and not letting him remain resigned to be lonely forever.
Twelve year old Esmie, along with her brother Mathew, lives in a residence run by a single parent, and and their nanny, Juliette. For as long as Esmie can remember, her dad has been single, and she decides that it's finally time that things changed around here. And so we begin the mum hunt- searching for the perfect mother is harder then it seems.
It was an okay book... it was most definietely the best one out of all three, just the other two were absolutely "fake". The writer isn't very "professional" esp. w/ the descriptions and stuff... had to rely on the front of the book for the descriptions of people and what they looked like. Still have no idea how most of the characters look like.
This book is about Esmie, her Dad and her brother.Esmies Mum died when she was a baby,so she decides to get her Dad a girlfriend...

Yep. Reviewed 2008 - 5 years ago. I think this needs serious updating. Well, where to begin? A mediocre, sometimes boring plot and a couple of annoying characters? That's about it. 2.5 stars.
okay, this was a short book. kind of pointless, in my opinion. wasn't really much to the story.
okay, so the girls' name is esmerelda, and you call her esmie? how about something cooler like zelda?
yeah, i'm not going to rate this, there was really nothing to it. but don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. but was nt good either. it was just kinda... i don't know, sitting on the fence.
Ide cerita begitu menarik. Terjemahan enak dibaca.
Cute, light-hearted, very readable children's book. Even though I don't usually read "real-life" stories, this made me want to read the other books in the series so much that I picked two up in the library the same day!
this book is about a girl how mum dies when she was a baby so she is off to hunt for a new mum for her dad but she didnt realise that her au peur was tha on e before it was too late
A really good book that just gives yet another glimpse of how some peoples lives are. I would recommend this book to 9-12-year-olds and maybe even 13-year-olds [I am 13 btw] so yeh do read this book
