Cool 😎 ça vaut bien les 5. D'abord les dessins sont très bien. C'est vivant ! Il y a un aspect du dessin par moment un peu comme si c'était fait au crayon pastel qui rend bien. Pour l'histoire, l'intrigue se pose très vite et il n'y a pas de temps mort. On s'intéresse vite aux personnages, comment en sont-ils arrivés là? Pourquoi ? La magie et la SF mêlés à notre belle ville de Paris que demander de mieux ! Attention, un peu violent/sanglant peut être pour certains. J'attends de lire le suite, en espérant que ce soit dans la continuité de ce premier tome.

This title started off with a bang and I can easily say it's one of the best graphic novel openings I read since a long time. There's to page filler, just action.
We are immediately thrown into this crazy and messed up world and I was here for it.

Unfortunately, after the half point mark, it kinda lost that super spark it had at the beginning.
I did find it back during the conclusion of this first voume, but I really wasn't a fan of some developments or decisions that were taken.

Woow quelle bonne bande dessinée. Du fantastique mixé à de la "science-fiction", c'était excellent. Paris 2022. Une explosion meurtrière détruit la ville et met fin à l'ère des magiciens. Manon, policière, et Adam, ancien magicien, enquête sur un misterieux duo qui semblent encore avoir accès à leurs pouvoirs.. Y'a de l'action en masse, les illustrations sont magnifiques, le petit côté gore est parfait. Vraiment hâte de lire la suite 👀✨

Here you have a graphic novel that is stylish, splashed a rainbow of colors, has amazing character design, and a whole bunch of violence. Only problem with this novel, I believe it was a bit sophisticated for this reader. But, I do think there will be plenty of fans and will probably stir up some controversy.

"In Memoriam", або "В пам'ять", або "Пам'ятаймо", або ще якось. Перший том серії називається "Манон". Це БД, тобто французький комікс. Видавництво "Дюпуі". Вийшов в 2023 році, тобто свіжачок. Офіційно був перекладений англійською, української адаптації не існує. Автори: Сальвія і Джет. Комікс пройшов довгий шлях до читача, кілька років тиняючись між студіями та видавцями.

Жанр: бойовик, детектив, фентезі.

Уявіть собі аналог гаріпотерівського світу, занурений у нашу сучасність. Кожен має доступ до магії, використовуючи реліквії певних категорій. Чим вища категорія реліквії - тим вона сильніша. Можна на ходу змінювати зачіску; прирощувати до невеликої квартири додаткові кімнати, як географічно взагалі розташовані в іншому кінці світу, але для магії це не перепона (привіт, "Гіперіон" Сімонса); ходити по стінах і так далі. Коротше, магли дірвалися до чар, але... Але залишилися маглами.

Манон, головна героїня. Живе зі своєю дівчиною Мілою, ледь тягне квартплату, обидві працюють поліціянтками, обидві мріють мати дітей. За якоїсь причини банки сперми їм не підходять, але в цьому їхньому магічному Парижі є магічні клініки, де за магічне лаве з радістю допоможуть. Дізнаємося ми це через кілька звичайних побутових сцен та коротку антуражну прогулянку, тому за швидку експозицію цьому твору можна сміливо ставити плюс. Чи лайк. Дівчата якраз йдуть в одну з таких клінік на черговий сеанс.

А ще в цьому всіті є анти-маги. Ні, не маги, які анігілюють, коли обіймашкаються з іншими магами, а противники магії, люди, які хочуть вернуть все взад до природи, бо ж реальність магією портить ніззя, це неправильно і далі за списком. І так вже сталося, що анти-маги влаштовують мітинг прямо під дверима магічної клініки. Сама клініка - це і є просто двері, які кудись телепортують. А шо, зручно (хотів згадати тут одну сов'єцьку фантастику, але в сраку її). Нашим героїням доводиться навіть значками світити, аби потрапити всередину, а в спину їм кричать про повагу до законів природи. Коротше, з нашої реальності вашій - радикальні активісти, не дякуйте.

Поки дівчат радують новинами про те, що у Міли все може скластися, назовні відбувається пришестя вибуху з "Акіри". Світло, блискавки, гігантська сфера закручується, що п'яний роман на корпоративі (з такими ж наслідками), навколо все руйнується, літає та гримить...

Рік потому в небі малюють назву цього коміксу, а отже, з прологом завершено.

Сонячно, якась порепана вулиця, руїни, лисіючий чувак відчайдушно біжить, але його заганяють у пастку. Одразу бачимо, що мужик не простий, бо як він розсипа зернята - зразу хащі з'являються, і переслідувачам стає важче його схопити. Та серед них є якась відчайдушна особа, якій хащі не перепона. Нам так розкривають одного персонажа. Нашу стару знайому, Манон. Ні, вона не той чувак, що тікав. Той, що тікав, врубає реліквію-телепортатор, коли поліціянтка буквально висить у нього на плечах. Все обійшлося, а реліквія стає штукою для вирішення сюжетних проблем.

Після теракту - а той акірівський пузир був терактом - всю провину повісили на чаклунів. Обіг та продаж артефактів стали незаконними, у місті утворилися гарячі зони з неконтрольованими магічними ефектами. Чувака (скоріш за все, незареєстрованого чаклуна) якраз піймали у одній такій зоні з реліквіями різних категорій. На чорному ринку за них можна вхопити купу грошей. Або шматок халепи.

Повернемося до Манон. Вона відчайдушна, антимагічний поліцейський загін її обожнює, але вона аж занадто сильно наривається. Є у Манон інформатор, Адам, але вона вважа, що користі від нього з калабаньку у спекотний день. Адам наче з тих чаклунів, хто готовий здавати своїх за кеш. І тепер у Адама проблеми. Хоч він і зареєстрований чаклун, але орендодавець, дізнавшись про магічні здібності бороданя, відмовляється поновити з ним договір оренди. Адам орендує приміщення під пральню, і це наче законний бізнес. Є у Адама і незаконне ремесло, і саме задля його розвитку він і приперся цього разу. Манон з орендодавцем розбиратися відмовилася, ну то й добре, час хакнути поліцейські серваки.

Адам надає послуги чаклунам. Що за послуги - поки не ясно. Можливо, це пов'язано із забороненим Орденом, але хто ж його зна. І зараз його просять знайти дівчинку. Хрещений батько її шукає. Ну, він так представився. З розмови ми також дізнаємося, що отой масштабний теракт отримав назву Великого Зламу.

Адам хакає поліцейську базу даних і знаходить трохи інфи. Дівчинка - глінер, або підбирачка. Поряд з нею на фото із досьє - велетенський кіт.

Раніше шось таке пухнате вже пробігало сторінками цього альбому, тому готуйтеся!

Тим часом поліціянти з антимагічного загону святкують затримання чарівника у барі. Майже обов'язкова сцена в історіях про копів. Манон свариться з Мілою, продовжує заливатися алкоголем, підкочує...ться до іншої дівчини, та врешті решт чимчикує й сама на хату, а там якісь небезпечні хлопці влаштовують допит Мілі. Манон в зюзю, її ще й підвішують до стелі хитрою магією, поки джокероподібний поганець розпитує Мілу про... так, про дівчинку з котярою.

Історія з дівчинкою і її котом - тепер основний сюжет. Якось забагато народу її шукає.

Допит закінчується трагічно, Манон вдається втекти за допомогою телепортатора. В неї виникає підозра, що поганці користувалися магією нативно, як справжні чаклуни, але накальство переконує, що думать про то не треба, всі візарди магю втратили, а в діло пішли властивості реліквій. Манон це не переконало.

У Адама відбувається зустріч з орендодавцем. Адам один, орендодавця багато. Посіпак своїх привів. Кілька сторінок Адама лупашать, і це якось затягнуто. Бійку використано ще й для невеличкої експозиції, але і без неї можна було обійтися.

Отже, Манон прагне зустрітися з Адамом, Адам оговтується після бійки та береться за пошуки дівчинки і отримує інфу про місце збору глінерів. Правда, приходить туди трохи запізно.

Місце збору - квартира, зараз завалена трупами. Адам відчуває, як усю будівлю трясе, а згори валяться шматки штукатурки. На даху хтось комусь робить боляче.

Дівчинку з котом захищає інша глінерша. Коти тут такі здоровецькі, що людину можуть порвати на шматки. Та поганці з одною пуською якось справляються. Коли Адам вилазить на дах, дівчинку захищає лише один кіт. І вони успішно такіють. Поганцям дістається трохи магічних копняків, та до будівлі вже мчить вся Котяча Мафія, до якої і належать глінери. Поки Адам відбивається від нової загрози (глінери не стали розбиратися, хто правий, а хто ні), в пральню забігає Манон та розпитує, де ж того Адама носять. Але розмовляти на сухе горло не гоже, і от уже орендодавець та його кодло несуть до пральні коктейлі. Коктейлі Молотова.

Адам бореться з котярою, ситуація критична, на дажу особливо не повоюєш. Манон хоче телепортуватися з пожежі, але реліквія глючить... і на цьому перша частина закінчується.

Що хорошого? Сюжет, лиходії, коти, відвертість, динамічні сцени та в цілому художній стиль.

Що поганого? Сеттінг в деталях не розкривають. Ось вам, що бачите на екрані - те ваше. Тобто і наче простір для фантазії є, але і почуття недомовленості гризе. Все, що треба знати, подається в діалогах персонажів, і цієї інформації, як на мене, явно недостатньо. Невже конфлікт магів та анти-магів настільки поверхневий? Як виникають реліквії? Як в цьому світі взагалі з'явилася магія?

Історія хоч і перевикористовує кліше, але робить це правильно.

П'ять з п'яти. Котиків одночасно і шкода, і ні, враховуючи, що це справжні пухнасті бойові машини.

In Memoriam: Manon is a graphic novel, part 1 of a series. It takes place in a fantasy version of Paris and centers in Manon, a cop who shares a tiny apartment with her girlfriend. We enter this world at a time when there are anti-magic protests and hate crimes. The story follows Manon as she struggles with fighting against and siding with magic simultaneously. My favorite part was the enormous cats.

The art is beautiful and evocative. It feels stylistically relevant in 2023, with touches of mid-century comics. Artistic choices like some of the text rendered to look like it's written in a black sharpie brought the art together to fit the urban Paris setting of the story. The atmospheric moments, such as the explosion that takes up entire spreads early on in the book, were really enjoyable.

Despite not being a big fan of graphic novels, I was drawn into the story and quite enjoyed the read. The characters have enticing personalities. There were a couple of places where I couldn't quite follow the motivation behind what the characters were doing, but that might be cleared up in later installments in the series. I read through the book in one quick sitting and didn't want to put it down while it was in my hands.

Manon and Mila are just the cutest couple ever, living in an alternate Paris where magic spells are a regular thing. Even more fun, these beautiful young Parisian women are both cops.

The conflict in the story arrives early: there are protesters against any use of magic relics. Not satisfied by just refusing to dabble in the magic arts themselves, these folks feel entitled to prevent others from practicing magic as well. The comic creates a parallel to a contemporary controversy, when Mila and Manon consult a wizard for a magic spell to give them something which nature could not provide for them. There are people in our real world who would totally balk at that. This presents as a classic case of people fearing what they don't understand. The Wizards insist that they are following a strict code of ethics regarding magic and that the protesters have nothing to be afraid of.

Suddenly, there is a dramatic calamity which occurs just after the moment our couple receives the good news. The people will later call it "The Great Fracture" and it was as terrible for wizards as it was for common folk. The story picks back up a year after the huge event.

In this environment, it's illegal to deal in magical relics, which are the way in which wizards hope to get their magical powers back after the Great Fracture. A Mage might try to escape, and usually would, unless a particularly plucky cop goes against protocol in order to get lawbreakers in line. This gets her in trouble with the Police Captain who sees her as a "loose cannon." This is a common cop trope, but we'll allow it. Apparently, the calamity from a year earlier opened up areas of reality instability which are unpredictable and dangerous . The cops do their best to keep people out, but even the politicians think it's time to open them up again.

The ex-wizards who have lost their magic are treated unfairly, like the former members of an out-of-favor religion. And maybe that is one of the ways in which to view magic as metaphor. Another way to look at it would be to view ex-wizards as ex-convicts: having to register and be tracked and discriminated against by pretty much everyone. Those parallels are strong. It's no wonder that those rejected by society might become informants, just to survive. But, you never know when informants might be double-crossers, or might be fomenting a rebellion.

We arrive at a second trope, which we will also allow, because this story is very good: a secret lair. I'm actually loving this. There is plenty of drama. No spoilers, but at this point, it's pretty much what you might anticipate, but it's also done very well, even though you knew it was coming. That's the test of good work.

Even better, when you are lulled into thinking you know exactly where the story is going, it totally surprises you and takes several turns. *Tips hat* Nicely done! I did not see any of that coming. And along with the bad guys we expect, there is the most surprising kind of mafia. We can't be sure of the nature of this unusual mafia, who their allegiance is to, but no one messes with them. Could one of their familiars have the answer to why the Great Fracture happened and who might be responsible? Stay tuned for the next installment.

Holy Cow! The action. The craziness. The frenetic and suspenseful development, the ending caught in a near-literal cliffhanger. I have GOT to read the next volume. I think this series will do well.

The comments by the author at the end touched my heart. Don't skip those.

Well, an English translation of this book's sequel did come out, but there is no sign of Part Three in the original French, so we're probably looking at the start of something years from finishing. Take that risk if you dare. Me, having read this? I won't have cause to be impatient. There's a growing anti-magic campaign and protest in France, headquarters of protest, of course – which is only made worse when something mahoosive and very lethal happens. Nobody knows what caused it – magicians or something else. Our two heroines are on different sides of the landscape, now, when before they were definitely engaged with using magic in nicely inventive ways. Now one is policing the black market in wizardry-providing Relics, the other more on the liberal side. But neither realises just how far magic will still have the power to impact their lives…

This started fine and quite taut – at least in comparison to the end. I liked the set-up to the mahoosive event, but before too long there are clearly too many antagonistic elements to the plot, and we're in the dark as to what the social divide around magical 'hot zones' is in reality like, and so on. The world building is weak, and when we're suddenly dropped into a world of a 'Cat Clan', whose members have ginormous felines for company, we not only see the ideas losing some coherency but that the art is pretty ropey when it comes to portraying action. And whatever is going to happen for the rest of these books is relevant as this feels like such a minor introductory snippet, ending on a cliff-hanger as if to say 'well, that bit's finished – let's pretend it's a full book and publish that'. If you enjoyed this, you would still feel like you deserved more from it. I just felt like it was an extended sampler that proved not to be on a par with the intrigue it could have caused.

Manon and her girlfriend Mila are in love, despite their tiny Parisian nest requiring magical extensions (their kitchen is in Bombay, their toilet God knows where). They’re also cops, and have to control the anti-magic crowds (who, like true fundamentalists, fear the unknown and try to prohibit the use of magic for everybody, not just for their little sect). It’s a world where magic and science work together (for example, to help Mila get pregnant) - and, unbeknownst to them, a world on the brink of abyss.

One year later, after ”the great fracture” that rocked the world, Manon is now hunting wizards instead of protecting them. Magic is gone, except in weird “hot zones” and ex-magicians dream of restoring their powers via the relics they find there. But, like Tepelman says, “reality always resumes its course” - and, unbeknownst to Manon and Mila, they’ll be key witnesses and actors in that course.

“In Memoriam” is a fantasy / supernatural / science fiction mix that keeps the action going from the first to the last page, while offering glimpses of an universe that’s equally alluring and dangerous (the violence in here is sometimes nauseating). Get ready for awe, heartbreak, and an investigation like no other. The second volume can't come quickly enough.

Nous sommes plongés dans un Paris post-apocalyptique, à moitié détruite suite à la Catastrophe. La capitale mondiale des Arts et de la Sorcellerie n'est plus ce qu'elle était et les sorciers sont désormais impuissants, leur magie ne fonctionnant plus. Quant aux artefacts, ceux-ci sont dysfonctionnels. La recherche d'une jeune fille va amener Manon, une jeune femme flic, à collaborer avec Adam, ancien sorcier. Mais bien des obstacles et des morts vont se dresser sur leur chemin...

Tout d'abord, j'ai adoré le scénario qui a beaucoup de potentiel. Le côté dystopique et post-apocalyptique m'a de suite conquis. Les dessins nous immergent dans cet univers très sombre avec facilité. L'histoire avance assez vite, avec pas mal d'actions, surtout dans le premier tome. Je trouve que le rythme ralentit un peu dans le deuxième tome où, comparativement avec le premier, il ne se passe pas grand chose au final, ou en tout cas pas grand chose qui fasse avancer l'histoire. Si une suite sort à l'avenir, je suis partante, en espérant que le potentiel de cette BD soit mieux exploité.

Si tu veux essayer le genre dystopique, post-apocalyptique et fantastique en BD, je te recommande de lire celle-là ! Cependant, attention aux yeux, c'est un peu sanglant parfois (personnellement je trouve ça léger, mais ça dépend des sensibilités de chacun et chacune) 🫣

This was one of the best new graphic novels I’ve read in a while. Djet and Salvia have skillfully built two distinct and deep worlds in mere pages in In Memoriam. Manon and Mila are police officers in Paris, in love in a world experiencing it’s ‘magic boom’, similar to our tech boom. Some people fear it, some carry magic casually on them like a cell phone. Children play with it on the train as the women go to an appointment. Magic is mundane in the sense that it isn’t an ‘other’, it’s a fact of life. When an apparent terrorist attack rocks the city, magic becomes something very different, as does the world Manon and Mila now live in. In Memoriam stories the aftermath of the attack, and what Manon will do to learn the truth. Trigger Warning: The story centers police officers. Celebration of arrests and/or police violence is present. All works with a law enforcement officer as the main character provide ‘good PR’ to law enforcement, regardless of if the character is ‘good’ or ‘bad’. It is important to be cognizant of this when consuming media about police officers.

This was a really enjoyable read. The art style is gorgeous. The world is so very interesting. It was a mix of fantasy/magic and sci-fi/post apocalypse/dystopia which isn’t something I’ve seen very often but I love both genres separately and really loved this merging of them. The story starts out cute but it picks up in pace and plot very quickly. I’m surprised how much happened in one short volume. I think the world drawn and the plot written were very immersive although do be aware that not everything is super explained, so it’s a bit of a wild ride of a read. The characters were really interesting, it seems like the two main characters of the series will be Manon and Adam. In particular, I am very fascinated with Adam and really want to learn more about him. Do be warned though, it ends on one heck of a cliffhanger. I will definitely be getting the next volume when I can because I need to know what happens next.

Ma lecture de Vermines ayant été géniale, je me suis immédiatement jetée sur le premier volume d'In Memoriam. Je l'ai obtenu grâce aux éditions Dupuis via NetGalley.

Cet univers nous offre un mélange des genres, entre fantastique et science-fiction. Cela apporte une touche d'originalité à l'intrigue que j'ai beaucoup appréciée.
Le récit n'est pas tendre. Il y a beaucoup de violence. Passer votre chemin si vous y êtes sensibles.
Il y a énormément d'action et de mystère. On tourne vite les pages pour assouvir notre curiosité et avancer dans l'enquête.
Petit bémol : les personnages manquent de profondeur. J'espère qu'ils seront plus développés dans la suite.

Cet ouvrage est vraiment prometteur. Je pense suivre le travail de Mathieu Salvia d'un peu plus près.
Vivement le deuxième tome !

This is a short volume set in an alternate Paris that was once the magical capital of the world, until a magical explosion brought it all to an end. There's a mysterious girl out in the dead zones that could be the key to figuring out what happened, and cop Manon decides to team up with an ex-wizard to find her. The worldbuilding and setting was fantastic, such an interesting and fun urban fantasy setup. The art was equally amazing, and easily my favorite part of the book. The figures were varied and the motion was fluid, the coloration was so good as well and really set the tone. What I struggled with was the story itself, I felt like it was told in chunks and that things moved along too quickly, I had a hard time following what was happening and why.

J’ai lu un tome de bande dessinée qui met en scène Manon, une policière qui vit avec sa compagnie Mila et qui désire avoir un enfant. Dans leur monde, il est possible d'avoir recours à la magie pour cela. Lorsqu'elles se produisent chez un médecin-magicien, une explosion éclate et le lecteur est catapulté trois mois plus tard. Les auteurs dressent le portrait de différents personnages et l'action se met lentement en place. Manon est un personnage cliché de flic qui cogne avant de poser des questions, mais les autres personnages et les créatures sont plaisants. Les dessins sont colorés et harmonieux. I am completely impressed, this is an impactful book.
A completely new and fresh story. Magic like I've never seen it before.
And the characters are strong, with their convictions and feelings and that is transferred from the page to the reader.
We have two police officers with different views on magic, but they put their difference aside to leave room for love.
And we have a sorcerer who denounces his own for his own survival.

The art is beautiful, the colors are fantastic. Is just beautiful.

Simply something like I've never seen before.
I'm super interested in picking up the next volume and unraveling the mystery a little more.

This world is fascinating and I cannot wait to read the next one, however I struggled liking any of the characters which I think was part of the point.

In a world with magic in a modern day setting, a magic bomb goes off killing tons of people leading it to be banned. A cop and her wife were there when it happened and lost their baby in the blast.

Now the cop has hatred in her heart from the devastating effects the magical disaster caused - in her personal life and in the field. There’s magical rebels, gritty cops, and gorgeous illustrations throughout.

It’s a quick and adventurous read and I’m excited to see what happens next!

To make themselves more edgy and up the stakes, a lot of modern comics seem to focus on high shock value, constant action and raw violence, forgetting to make their main characters likable first. The only character I might have cared about died, and the rest I would have wished to die, they were so awful.
It's a shame, because the illustrations are good, the world is interesting, the premise could really be great... but I'm never going to stick around if I hate everyone.
There is potential, but again it's hard to say when you only read the first comic volume of a series, it really depends on whether this goes anywhere.

In Memoriam started off a bit confusing to me but I quickly started to love the art style (the floating Kois) and then boom the plot gets to the next level.

I've definitely come to root for our sapphic ship early on and didn't care much for the others. It was frustrating to see Manon and Mila fight but I felt very sorry for what they went through, especially Manon later on. I felt very sad with Manon about what happened.

Physical fights were artistically implemented in an aesthetic and comprehensible way. There's a lot of adult content in this graphic novel, it's... very graphic (pun intended).

If you like action packed graphic novels with brutal fights and very little magical elements, then you'll enjoy this one.

Paris was a magical world capital until a great explosion ripped through Paris and made magic stop working. Now Manon, a cop; Adam, an ex-wizard; and a mysterious duo are all looking for a 13-year-old girl who may have answers about what caused the rift.

This book did a great job setting up the world of this series. I hope we learn more about the grifters and their giant cats in the next volume! I really liked the illustrator’s style.

This was a fantastic start to a series that mixes science fiction and fantasy. The story is based in Paris and is centered around a female cop named Manon. When the story starts, Manon was siding with magic but due to an incident, she changed her attitude and now enforces the restrictions placed on magical artifacts and people.

The art was beautiful done and I especially love the giant cats! I can't wait to read the sequel.

This was such a fabulous start to a graphic novel! I loved the artwork and felt like the word building was compelling. It gave me enough to know what was going on but didn’t hit me over the head with exposition. I want to see the next instalment!!!

This was a nice read. Solid action, decent world building and interesting characters. The story has enough for an good first installment, yet leaves open just enough for the sequel.

The art is very nice. Vibrant colourwork in sync with dynamic linework creates an enticing whole artwise.

Je l'ai lu plus tôt cette année, mais ne l'avait pas noté dans mes lectures! Bref, une excellente série policière fantasy. Les dessins sont riches en détails et sortent presque de la page! Le scénario est aussi bien étoffé, et en finissant ce tome-ci, j'avais vraiment hâte à la suite!

A very stylish, grabbing opening to a SF series: a riot of colors, super slick character design, and loads of flashy violence. On the plus side: two lesbian detectives, being incredibly good-lucking and happy together on page one. On the downside: the same two lesbians getting wrecked twice by the story, even though it has a whole of 76 pages in it. As much as I like stylish violence set to neon colors, I would very much prefer to keep my lesbian detectives couple alive... For all its promise of cool action, if the direction of the story travel is to investigate mystical orphans and violent psychopaths at the expense of creating a tragic backstory with a dead lesbian, I am probably going to sit that one out
