Edition with illustrations by Rackham. Wish there'd been colour illustrations, too, and not just silhouette and black & white drawings.

Many a girl has waited long
For a husband brave or strong;
But I'm sure I never met
Any sort of woman yet
Who could wait a hundred years,
Free from fretting, free from fears.

Now, our story seems to show
That a century or so,
Late or early, matters not;
True love comes by fairy-lot.
Some old folk will even say
It grows better by delay.

Yet this good advice, I fear,
Helps us neither there nor here.
Though philosophers may prate
How much wiser 'tis to wait,
Maids will be a sighing still --
Young blood must when young blood will!

This one is yet another version of the classic sleeping beauty, this has some old ogre known as the mother in law who wants to eat her grandchildren but was in a total failure little did she know aha it'll bite her ass in the end. Not so creepy like the one ive read before this.

The origin of a tale we think we know well. This elaborates more on what happens after a prince wakes up our sleeping beauty and very little on our princess. Some basics are the same, but I would say the story is wildly different - and like most original fairy tales are much darker than we’re accustomed. I guess we now know Disney left out King Hubert’s Queen because she is part ogre and will want to eat her grandchildren. Yikes.

Before reading this short story I never knew this is where most the fairytales originated from, and I like Charles Perrault had his dark twisted versions. It opened up my eyes to some of the fairytales I know about now, and how some of them still really aren't suitable for children. Perrault has a couple other short fairytale stories like Little Red Riding Hood, Blue Beard, and Cinderella or the Glass slipper, and these all had their own little twist about them as well. It was very interesting to learn about his reasoning about these tells, most were because of his children. I would recommend his short stories to adults so that they can get a different perception of things and can interpret the fairytales they were told as a kid. (131)

I reread this for an English Literature course. I don’t remember this childhood story having a cannibal ogre for a Queen!😅
This is a very quick read and is based on the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty; I went into this thinking I was just rereading a childhood story but it took a strange turn. The Princess, after being awoken, is found out to have a cannibal as a mother-in-law who wants to eat her children and then the Princess herself herself! Luckily, the cook tricks her by feeding her raw animal meat and hiding the children with his wife. When she finds out he has deceived her, she orders them to be put in a tub of snakes and toads ect, but is startled by the return of her son and instead jumps in herself! So bizarre, 3/5⭐️

I admit that I have read several versions of this wonderful fairy tale about the power of love and hate. Because it is the hatred of one of those offended fairies that caused the princess and the entire court to fell asleep for a hundred years. Only a kiss of true love will soothe the broken nerves, acts like the most effective painkiller, chase away bad thoughts and wake up from a magical coma.

And then, as it is in fairy tales, there was a great joy, the princess married the prince and they lived happily ever after.

This story is about a child who had seven fairies as her godmothers. Six of the fairies gift the child, while the seventh has nothing to gift. With that being said, the seventh fairy godmother made it so that rather than dying, the Princess (child) falls into a deep sleep for 100 years and is awakened by the a kiss from the king’s son. I have always enjoyed stories such as this one. These stories are always so interesting to me.

Wanted to read the original tale and was blown away by how different it was to the Disney movie. Not to mention, how little it actually involved the "sleeping beauty". I'm also going to read the Grimm's version to compare, but this was very interesting to read.

This was really enjoyable and I wish I could have read the text in the original language. There’s a few typos in this copy (or just a mistranslation because grammar structures are slightly different). I would love to see a movie adaptation closer to the original version of the story.

Sinceramente el final me parece demasiad tétrico para ser un cuento infantil. Las ilustraciones son muy bonitas, pero el libro no lo recomiendo para leérselo a niños.

Somehow original fairytales tend to be a bit brash, disjointed, and even disgusting. This one came across that way. And yet, it is still my favorite Disney princess movie.
