I've read this book series a few times now, and each time I read it, I learn something new or I have a different perspective since I've read the series at different stages in my life. The first time I read it, I was utterly and completely in love with Ren (because who doesn't fall in love with him at some point in the series?) and I was so annoyed with Kishan throughout the whole series, like I really had no compassion for him, because you just know that Kelsey and Ren are meant to be together.

This most recent reading of the series, I find I do still love Ren, but not as completely as I used to. I also had so much more empathy and sympathy for Kishan and was really hurt that Kelsey would, in essence, use him as her "back-up" plan, because she didn't think Ren would stay with her, despite how loyal he showed he was. I think I was most annoyed with Kelsey this time. She needs so much rescuing (though she does rescue quite a bit herself), but it seems she is always whining or complaining about something. She has a hard time making any decisions and it gets on your nerves after reading it as many times as I have. Kelsey is playing with the emotions of these two men and is doing more harm than good in staying with Kishan for so long. I don't think Phet should have told her that she would be happy with either brother, because she was so obviously destined for Ren. Kishan could've been told the moment Kelsey re-realized her feelings for Ren that she wanted to be with him, but he was dragged through this emotional roller-coaster. It wasn't healthy for anyone. I'm so grateful that he does end up with someone he loves and loves him in return. Despite my more cynical view of the series now that I'm a couple of years older, I do really love this series and the romance and adventure in it. I expect to read each book countless more times in the future.

Oh my gosh! Well it was mid book one that I became hooked. I WAS disappointed when I realized a BLACK tiger was on the cover of the second book!

Second book was okay and made me VERY UPSET because I do become attached to characters

Woo what an emotional time VERY MIXED EMOTIONS in the third book. There was a beautiful way that a star was healed! Must read it!!!!! I became fed up with Kelsey and her tendencies to kiss or just allow ANYONE to steal kisses from her -annoying

Fourth book I became restless wanting to know the ending. But sure! I loved the ending!!!! Loved these books!

This is a very interesting series about 2 prince's from India who get cursed and turned into tigers. The curse allows them to retain their human form for 24 minutes of every 24 hour day. They live this way for centuries, but then a young woman from Oregon comes into their lives and they discover she is the chosen one, who will help them to break the curse.

I love how the story infuses culture and legends from India. I love what I learned about Mythology from India, most especially the goddess Durga. I've seen statues of her...the goddess with eight arms, but knew next to nothing about her significance.

I would recommend this series to mature 8th grader's and high school students. It is very clean, but it is a romance exploring themes of young love.

young adult + / paranormal romance?
The author describes this saga as Twilight meets Indiana Jones. Not a bad comparison, but even though there is a love triangle the romance doesn't feel like Twilight to me. I think the story is quite unique and creative. The two "vying heroes" are brothers who have been cursed as tigers. Kelsey (main character) helps to break the curse and that's where the Indiana Jones "feel" comes in. This is a very action-packed story and would make an awesome movie if done right. (I last read that the movie would be out in 2015.) I really love this saga, but would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't like a very descriptive book. And I do think the author's writing improves as the story progresses. Kelsey has already graduated high school when the story starts, and the cleanliness is about on the same level as Twilight.

This is my all time favorite book series. I remember seeing these books every time I went to B&N. I always thought about picking it up bit then another book will catch my attention. Finally I got the 1st book and the rest was history. My love for India, its culture and the characters of the book are all the way, 100% perfect in every way. Kelsey is just your average girl who falls in love with an Indian prince who is under a curse where he turns into a tiger *takes a breath* Then she goes on crazy adventures with him like a modern day female Indiana Jones to help him get rid of the curse. If that doesn't make you want to pick these books up then I don't know what will. You will not be disappointed.

Okay, so I'm gonna mark this as 'read' now, because the first three books I read as part of a re-read and the fourth one I want to add on its own seen as how it'll be my first time reading it (EXCITED!). But seen as how this book only counts as one for my challenge, I think it's fair, no? 2 books in my challenge, actually read four. Okay? Okay.

This series was enjoyable. It was full of romance, adventure, mythology, and yearning… SOOOO much yearning… but it also raises some important questions about cultural representation.

The premise of the book is this: A white American teenager, Kelsey, takes a summer job at a circus. Here, she finds herself tangled up in a centuries old Indian curse and a shape-shifting tiger named Ren who happens to be royalty. Boom: Suddenly there is a mystified world if ancient prophecies, magic, quests across India, sacred artifacts, and soooo much YEARNING. I mean it. It’s wildly fun and rich. It brought me back to the feelings I got while reading Percy Jackson or watching The Mummy. It’s brooding and dramatic, and it hits the sweet spots inside of me.

Kelsey and Ren is peak moody, dramatic, YA romance that is frustrating in exactly the right (and sometimes wrong) ways. I mean… just communicate?! Hate that trope. But love the mythological settings and romantic tension, so I can cope with the subpar communication skills of elder teenagers stuck in a dangerous quest.

Houck’s admiration for Indian culture is evident. It’s detailed, and the sheer volume of gods, legends, temples, festivals… it’s all there, wrapped in fantasy framework. I loved how cheesy the magic systems were. It just *worked* without over-explanation.

But here is where I got a little weirded out. While Houck obviously aims to honor Indian mythology, and clearly did a great deal of research and interviews, she’s still a white American author writing about Indian inspired fantasy that centers on a white protagonist “saving” an Indian prince. That can feel like a modern echo of the classic “white savior” trope. And not that I’m an expert by ANY MEANS here (acknowledging my ignorance, I am a lot less educated on the mythology than Houck), but it did feel like some of the interpretations of Hindu mythology in particular were a little watered down to fit the YA definition of things. There wasn’t a lot of nuance.

Maybe this is a good starting point for people to research this culture on their own. Maybe it’s insulting to simplify such a rich culture. Maybe there’s more nuance to this than a Goodreads review can offer.

I think it’s okay to enjoy this epic tale while also holding space for critique. It’s possible to appreciate a romance that allows you to escape real world problems while acknowledging that marginalized cultures deserve to be represented by own-voice authors whenever possible. Still, I loved the crazy adventure and the pure cheesiness of it all. It’s fun. It’s dramatic. It’s brimming with magic. It transported and frustrated me (SERIOUSLY?! Just communicate!!) And I’m glad that it gave me a thoughtful lens while also allowing me to have silly fun times.

One of the most life-changing books I read during my elementary and middle school years was this fantasy novel. It profoundly shaped me into the person I am today. Beyond its fantastical elements, the book taught me valuable lessons about exploring different cultures, appreciating what may be unfamiliar, and embracing my own identity and destiny. This novel opened my eyes to the world and helped me develop my intuition. While other experiences have also contributed to my growth, re-reading the series made me realize how much I've identified with characters like Ren, Kelsey, and Mr. Kadam. I'd like to thank Colleen Houck and the team for their patience and responses to my enthusiastic emails back in 2011. I remain hopeful that the series will be adapted into a show or movie one day, and I wish for younger readers to experience the same joy and inspiration that I did.
10/10 for me!

The cover is beautiful, there is nothing to discuss but it disappointed me how the story dragged. The romance was great, until the 3. book. It was all about the same thing later. There have been an incredible number of problems in their relationship that could have been resolved if the characters could communicate with each other.

But in order to not talk about negatives, the idea was great. For me is the first book was best. I liked the adventure in books.

But it's took the fact that it was so felt. Later I had no interest or finish reading and I ended on a third book. I wasted in very many parts and often give me an illogical. Great disappointment, I was waiting for more.

I thought it was a good book. It gave me something to read, but I honestly couldn't stand the main character. Kelsey made some cringy jokes here and there, and was too "wishy-washy" from moving brother to brother depending on which day of the week it is. I felt Kelsey's personality was a bit fake and trying to hard to be "the fiercely independent hero who doesn't need anybody", if you catch my drift. But overall I thought it had a relevant plot and a lot of action and romance if you're into that.

The adventure in this story is a lot of fun. Magic, demons, endless resources, etc. I would have liked to have seen more emphasis on attraction through common goals, loyalty, sacrifice, and introspection. There is a lot of emphasis on beauty and physical attraction which is appropriate to a point, some more depth would have been nice to see.

I loved it! It was an amazing adventure and the author kept the twist and turns coming so that you really didn't know what would happen. this series had the classic love triangle but unlike most books this one really got into booth of the charagters, making it hard to choose which one was best! I totially reccomend these books!!!

My guilty teen romance pleasure reading. Similar to Twilight but with better writing and adventures. I love tigers and the culture of India so this is right up my alley. The character's internal problems I found to be rather unrealistic and shallow, but that also keeps it a light and fun series to read.

This series was by far one of my favorites growing up! I haven't read these in SO long, so I imagine I wouldn't appreciate them in the same way now as I did then. Nevertheless, these books are great fantasy/romance/thriller reads for younger audiences!

I read these books years ago as a teenager and absolutely loved them (get too frustrated with certain plot choices and characters to read them later in life). Definitely written for a younger audience and truly YA in all facets but so much fun if you can just read it for what it is.
