I am so happy to see books like this: great graphic art and just enough information to challenge young minds to become interested in history. There is so much out there about George Washington (GW) that is myth; and I think that this really does take away from who he really was. This book is a great first step in learning about the life of GW.

Fiction Twin text: George Washington's breakfast, by Jean Fritz. I chose this book because it is a great story to help my students make text to self and text to world connections. The story George Washington's breakfast is about a boy who loves to learn and is in search of more information about our first president, right down to what George Washington ate for breakfast! The book George Washington's breakfast helps make history come alive in a light and humorous way while still preserving many historical facts. I will use these two books in my third grade class around president's day to further engage my students in learning about our country's history.

George Washington the Rise of America's First President is a graphic novel written by Agnieszka Biskup. It's is at the fourth grade reading level. The story follows George Washington and his influence on our nation. The book would be great informative text for a history lesson. The only content concern would the influence on fighting in battle for younger students.

A reasonable history for a very short book - obviously a book this length can’t share all relevant information. The pictures were awful and ugly, and could have been more vibrant or kid-friendly....

Reason for Reading: Biographies and memoirs are one of my favourite graphic genres.

Pay particular attention to the subtitle of this book as it accuarately describes what this book is about. Concentrating only on Washington's life as a soldier and how he came to be president the book is told in his own voice as he tells the story of when they came to tell him he had been elected president. From then he reminisces about his involvement in the Revolutionary War, first of all being quite against it, hoping for a peaceful settlement since he had fought hard for the British in the previous war. However he was soon disappointed in the King and appointed leader of revolution armies. The book continues on to tell about battles he participated in, his war career in general and why he was respected and elected president even though he was reluctant to take on the role. The book quickly ends with his retirement and death. Honestly, I found the war details tedious and boring, but this is a topic I've read much about and am not especially interested in reading about Washington much anymore. I was disappointed to see that Washington was not portrayed or even shown to be a slave owner. There were several views of his home at Mt. Vernon and the abscence of his slaves on the property was conspicuously noticable. Interesting book for what it attempts to do.

In graphic novel format for accessibility and appeal, this short book covers the early political and military career of the nation's First President. There isn't a lot of material about his growing up years or marriage or even his term as president, but the author covers his military campaigns and efforts to get money and supplies for his soldiers. Although all too brief, the book will engage plenty of readers who think history is boring.

Starts off dry, but once we get to the battles of the revolutionary war things pick up. No Nathan Hale, but a serviceable introduction to the war and the man. 3 1/2 stars
