NEVER DIE. NEVER WIN. ETERNALS. What's the point of an eternal battle? For millions of years, one hundred Eternals have roamed the Earth, secret protectors of humanity. Without them, we'd be smears between the teeth of the demon-like Deviants. Their war has waged for all time, echoing in our myths and nightmares. But today, Eternals face something change. Can they - or anyone on Earth - survive their discovery? From the thought provoking minds of Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, Uncanny X-Men, Thor) and Esad Ribi? (Secret Wars, King Thor) comes a new vision of the classic Marvel mythology!
I wouldn't be surprised to see Thanos figure here prominently. As the Eternal race birthed his wrinkled chin mug, it would be a fight promoter's dream to have someone go t0e-t0-toe with the Mad Titan in both power and skill. That said, it's always hard to pass a Ribić illustrated story.
The Eternals have been reanimated and brought back only to realize a murder of on of their own has taken place. Then they find out who has done this. Ah damn. Pretty great first issue. I’m down to see where this goes.
I know that this miniseries is only out to advertise for the upcoming Eternals movie. And even at that, both the movie and this miniseries are constrained by the parameters of Nail Gaiman's run on Eternals a few years ago.
Even at that, this single issue was constricted by the "King in Black" event that I have been trying desperately to avoid. There were references to brain-eating monsters in this issue that actually make no sense, unless you understand this godawful event.
And despite all these limitations, I still complain that the Eternals are now emulating the X-Men right now with the whole, immortality-by-way-of-resurrections thing. And the Eternals haven't been able to just be themselves in years. Sersi was a powerful, beautiful, admirable member of the Avengers in the early 90s, and she hasn't been able to just talk like a normal person --with all her memories intact-- in decades. In this issue she is mentioned, but she still isn't "back."
Ribics artwork is amazing. The story is typical Gillen. Very detailed but i also was a little confused at the start. My first intro into The Eternals so dont know much about them. Although this has me intrigued
Interesting start! Character of an epic level! Could go either way, too soon to tell, but I'm really curious and will follow it up for some issues at least!
When we last saw the Eternals, in the pages of Jason Aaron's Avengers, they'd all committed suicide after discovering that the Celestials did not create them to protect humanity, as they had thought, but to cultivate them. But, this is comics, and, unsurprisingly in a book about a race called the Eternals, death is not the end for them. Which ties this book not only to the Avengers, but...thematically, at least...to Hickman's X-Men, which also deals with the nature of eternal life through resurrection.
We open on Ikaris, the last of the Eternals to be resurrected by "The Machine," an artificial intelligence that sort of governs Eternal society...although "governs" is probably the wrong word...I don't mean it in the political sense. It's certainly in charge of the resurrection process, though not who is resurrected and when. It also oversees those who are excluded from Eternal society and put in some form of stasis, awaiting resurrection (although not all those who are excluded are held in stasis, apparently). It does not decide who is excluded and how long for, though, as upon reawakening Ikaris is charged by Zuras, the leader of the Eternals, with overseeing the reintroduction of Sprite, the youngest of the Eternals, back into Eternal society. Sprite had previously gone mad and tried to destroy the Machine in an attempt to transcend their role as the Eternals eternal child. They...they literally raged against the machine...
I use the pronoun "they" for Sprite because while Sprite has always been male previously, their gender here is unclear. I had assumed they were female, and then watched a video review of this comic in which they're referred to as "he." However, in the upcoming movie they're being played by a girl, and Ikaris mentions that during the resurrection process they can choose to change their form and appearance, so I'm wondering if Sprite has chosen to be female. This would bring the character into line with their movie portrayal. Speaking of bringing things into line with the movie, the timing of this release intrigues me, as the movie was supposed to be released next month (after being pushed back from November) but will now be released in November of this year...unless it gets pushed back again... All of which doesn't really have much bearing on anything but I thought was interesting nonetheless.
You know what else is interesting? This comic! How was that for a segue back to actually reviewing the book? But, yeah, this is written by Kieron Gillen, so of course it's good. It's illustrated by Esad Ribic, whose art is always gorgeous, although I'm not too keen on the way he draws faces, particularly Sprite's, which definitely contributes to the confusion regarding their gender, although that may well be deliberate. We shall see.
But, yeah, a great start and I'm looking forward to reading more!
Pues no había leído nada de los Eternos y aunque al principio estaba un poco perdido la verdad es q ha captado todo mi interés... y más con toda la parte final!
Respecto al apartado gráfico de Esad Ribić y el color de Matthew Wilson MUY interesante!
My result/grade is 2,30 overall(two and a half stars unfortunately).
Yesterday I started reading this first issue and after that issue the next3 issues of this marvel eternals comicbook rebirth soft reboot mini series run and as I finished all the 4 issues I found as usual when I pick up to read a comicbook or a graphic novel of Marvel with the Eternals as the main protagonists characters in their own Comicbook Mini Series Eun(as far as I remember I have read only Neil Gaiman's Graphic novel of 7 issues but I have researched over 4 years which was the first and the last time that I have read anything with the Eternals that there are the original classic mini series Comicbook Run of 1978 Eternals which was the first series of the Eternals and was abruptly cancelled after the issue 19 and some of the next future story lines that Jack Kirby wanted to use if The Eternals had not been cancelled were used in later issues of Thor or the Avengers and I have not read and neither got into to that series of the 19 issues yet even though I have all the 19 issues and the Thor Eternals Crossover Storyline Ideas Comics on my laptop computer and I forget constantly to start picking up these Comicbooks and start reading them and as I said as far as I remember fromthe big research and exploration on the internet and the YouTube that there are another 2 mini series comic book sequel runs of Eternals one in the 1988's or 1993's run that is the sequel of the first and original classic Jack Kirby Marvel Eternals 19 issues Comicbook Run and the sequel of the 1988's or 1993's of 2008 which is the Neil Gaiman graphic novel continuation and finally this 2021 sequel soft reboot of all the other Marvel Eternals Comicbook MiniSeries Runs and as I found out it is actually okay to decent(just like the graphic novel of Neil Gaiman not better than Neil Gaiman's Graphic Novel Run which is also okay to decent but better than this 2021 Eternals Comicbooks as far as I am with the first 4 issues I have read yesterday and all these 4 issues were not bad or horrible or lame just okay to decent but a little boring and over simplified and very few small things all around overall just not the epic godly sci-fi superhero godly fantasy that I have needed and deserved and thought I would get which I didn't get mostly for the most part)but not good or very good or great or even wonderful or spellbinding or outstanding at all just okay to decent(which for me as I have mentioned a few times above this text that Neil Gaiman's Eternals Graphic Novel is a little bit better not bedazzling or superb or outstanding or spectacular like I said before but still better than this 4 issues of 2021 Eternals comics which means decent:Neil Gaiman's Eternals is just decent simply just decent Marvel or Stand alone even Sequel Soft Reboot 2006 Graphic Novel of 2008 Eternals Mini Series Continuation Run in the most simple and decent way!!!!
I am not such a big fan of Ikaris, Kingo, Fruit, Phastos or Cersi(I prefer Gilgamesh or Sprite or Zuras even Thena but Gilgamesh and Sprite are my favorites even though their costumes on this Eternals Mini Series are not so good godly or even super heroic just a little better than all the other costume renditions and versions from the previous Eternals Comicbook Series, Appearances and Portrayals but Gilgamesh's Costume/Armor/Suit in this Eternals Mini Series of Comicbook Run even though is much better than all the other costumes of his in the previous Eternals and Avengers Comicbooks It doesn't impress me so much but it is still an improvement from all the other stupid, lame and cringy corny simple costumes or armies of his!!!!
I am always a person and a fan a nerd and a geek individual who hates and doesn't want or have to relate and engage to a story of a movie/game/book etc. Or even a fictional mythical character or a real legendary historical person in order to care/sympathize/intriqued/like/adore/love/dislike/unsympathize/ignore/hate or even despise a character or a movie or a Comicbook:For all my life all the rest of my remaining mundane life I just want to love/hate, like/dislike, adore/despise, pleased or displeased even care/ignore for the most part or completely or even a little a fictional or a real person or a movie or a comic book or any other piece of art without the requirement or need to relate or engage to that character and it's situation or even to the story. I like/dislike, love/hate a movie or a character or even a real person without relating to them all the time or most of the time in many, most or all the ways and things in the entire world and I enjoy it doing so in all the time in many or all the ways every aspect of my life:
for example I like very much but I don't love Lara Croft The Tomb Raised, I love Power Rangers, I like very much the DC Characters and Stories and their DC Multiverse(Not every aspect of the whole DC Multiverse and not every character either superhero or supervillain) let's say that I like very very much The Green Lantern Hal Jordan or Guy Gardener and I care for these characters and I am even interested in them and many of their stories, comics, portrayals and adaptations and versions without relating or engage myself to them, Sonic The Hedgehog I love him and his games, movies, comics, cartoons etc. very much much morethan Super Mario and his games, comics, movies and cartoons and there is not any need or requirement or request to realte to Sonic in order to love him, Mortal Kombat and Especially Scorpion and Johnny Cage I love them a lot of music for most of the time most of their adaptations, portrayals and versions/depictions without absolutely and actually completely relate to them because also I don't want to relate to something or someone in order to love/hate, like/dislike them
I am not a very very big or huge fan of Every Eternals Comicbook Series to have most of the eternals members/characters not being present and active or even mentioned or shown through flashback page stills because just like most of the Eternals Comicbook Series Runs most of the very impressive and super cool and interesting important Eternals are missing or dead or lost somewhere in the far out reaches of the entire marvel universe or multiverse and unfortunately even in this Eternals Mini Series we stuck and forced to join, care and show interest to certain eternals such as Kingo with his lame bad and cheap poor imitation of a display samurai or shogun or ninja whatever crap armour he wear with a mediocre oversimplified lame kabuki Asian ninja mask, Ikaris who has very wonderful costume this time but neither him is interesting or impressive or splendid character and Eternal to care, love, sympathize or like about, Phastos who even though I now and I am aware of the action and purpose and motivations and reasons of this character in the next issues because of a few spoilers about him in the next issues(I am mostly a person who does not mind to have people or stuff spoiling and revealing important stuff about movies, comics, games andtheir entire plot even if it is the whole plot of the entire movie or game or book or whatever) I still needed or wanted so much to see this character being very interesting even more interesting and more impressive and brilliant and spectacular character and Eternal than Ikaris or Kingo but he is just like Ikaris and Kingo(I do not have a problem at all with Kingo being a black, chocolate or brown samurai, ninja, Shogun, Shinobi or whatever he is in this Comicbook mini series(Unfortunately once again Eternals is a mini series instead of a whole comicbook series of 60 or 200 issues at least) but come on give Kingo a better Asian Costume or a better warrior god hero armor even an eternal African armor not this black silver cheap and very easy simple cosplay excuse mediocrity of a bad way costume armor which even the mask is lame for an Asian Kabuki Ninja or Samurai Mask), Sprite even though I did not like her when she was a boy in the previous versions of her in the previous Marvel Eternals Comicbooks in this 2021 version I adore, sympathize and even like her a lot but I don't love her and her costume is so simple and lame even in here as well, Gilgamesh in this 2021 eternals comic series has better version of his armor but still not the best it is still better armor/costume/suit but he is still way more interesting and fascinating Wonderful Character, Eternal, Hero and Warrior than Ikaris, Kingo and Phastos, Thena has the best armor costume than all the other Eternals than every version of her from all the previous Eternals Comicbook Series and she is way better and more brilliant and gorgeous and divine and heroic character, heroine, goddess and eternal in this 2021 comic series. I need and I hope to see more Zuras, Druig and many other Eternals towards the last 2 issues. I deserved, I needed and I wanted more rich mthological, leagendary super heroic sci-fi godly fantasy lore, plot, artwork, visuals, landscapes, epicness, godliness/godhood and action and to see all the Eternals to do more with their powers even to show more other powers of theirs but unfortunately I mostly for the most part I didn't see neither witnessed any of that.
Anyways for me since I have read only the 4 issues of this Eternals 2021 comic run the best if not the best but better characters are Gilgamesh, Thena, Sprite, Zuras and Druig(I hope Makkari and Ajak appear in the last 2 issues and participate a lot in the plot and the story and remain alive and unite with the rest of the Eternals Group and I hope are very fascinating and interesting brilliant characters especially Makkari unlike Phastos and Kingo or Sersi or Ikaris) are brilliant and fantastic fascinating entertaining and interesting impressive intriguing characters/superheroes-villains and Eternals. Gilgamesh and Thena are so long by far my 2 favorite and best characters and Eternals and I want to way more of these 2 in the upcoming movie and more new eternals or avengers, x-men or even guardians of the galaxy Comicbooks even a spin off 12 or 26 issues mini series comic with Gilgamesh and Thena as the main duo superhero partners protagonists in the distant future(Marvel please 🙏 Make it So please 😭😭😥😥.
I will finish the last 2 issues and give them a review as well in here on goodreads and I will continue next by start reading Eternals Forever and Eternals Celestia and all the previous Eternals and then I will go to see and enjoy the movie Eternals and like or dislike, love or hate and care for many and any of the characters without actually relating and engaging to them.
I have no idea what I just read. It's not that the story is a mess. It's that this is the first Eternals thing I've read and I'm unfamiliar with the characters and backstory. I tried reading some of the Gaiman/JRJr run, but the latter's art was terrible (as it has been for a long time, IMO) so I stopped after a few pages. In any case, this book assumes *some* level of familiarity more than what I possess. YMMV.
Esad Ribic's art, as always, was amazing. I'll probably re-read this a couple of times just to look at the art.
Maybe I'll go read Kirby's stuff. Maybe not. Maybe I'll just wait for the movie and let that be enough.
Here's the reason why I hate the issue format. Instead of getting a nice book with 100-something pages, we get this were the story barely begins. So far it's pretty interesting and it seems like Marvel finally found a way to put the Eternals in the mainstream universe without feeling dumb. Looking forward to see where it leads.
this actually looks interesting, which is a lot coming from me as i didn't really enjoy other eternals comics AND the fact that eternals can change their appearance is amazing to me AND to top it off they killed zuras! i hate that dude! so overall i was enyojing this issue but... i hate thanos i don't care about him and i don't want him here!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Some good color artwork, with text. Some good black and white artwork, text free. Suitable for teens and adults. Eternal warriors who secretly run the earth, must confront their mortality. Based off a great Jack Kirby series.
Very Gillen, for sure. The art was great, if a bit dark (like, literally, not metaphorically). So far the character I like is Sprite. I am curious to know what happens later, but I'll probably wait for the trade.
4.25 Stars. I know it's just the first issue, but, wow I really liked this. I've never read any other Eternal stuff and probably wouldn't have wanted to read this if Gillen wasn't writing it, Ribic doing the artwork is also a mark in the pro column. Interested to see where this goes.
This is my first ever Eternals-related book. I do plan to go back and read the original Kirby material, but for now, this is my entry point. I am intrigued by the world of the Eternals that I'm presented with in this issue, but I wasn't blown away by the story.
I would recommend this to the more hard core fans of Marvel or someone who wants a different type of story than the normal superheroes. They are specifically not costumed fighters and this looks like it is going to go in a different direction.
