Wonderful prose, but the story isn't as engaging as I hoped it would be. Hence, the 3 stars.

This is my second book by Shana Abe. I really like her historical romance stories. A Kiss at Midnight
is set in the year 999. This book was published in 2000. So as you read it you get the reference to the fear and panic of the time of what would happen when the century turns over, much like we worried what 2000 would bring to our world, end of the world? Total collapse of technology etc. Now, 17 yrs later we laugh at our worries, but the new century is a scary prospect! For the folks in this book there is similar fear of doom and end of the world. It is also when Rafeal gets to take over the land of his neighbor, who happens to be the grandfather of a much maligned Sareth Rune, daughter of a woman burned at the stake for being a witch. Sareth flees the convent where she has grown up. The town people where Rafael takes her think she is also a witch. Rafael is coming to get her to force grandfather into giving him his land and castle. I really liked Rafeal and Serath Rune. I feel like they did have romantic chemisty. she writes with poetic prose, you can feel, see, smell the scene she describes.
Shanna Abe's books leave you wanting more. She holds off on the sexual climax scene until....way long into the book. She writes very sensual, romantic scenes without sex. Might frustrate some people. There is a scene in the rain that was so sensual and romantic, took my breath away! I found myself really looking forward to when Rafael and Serath finally consummate their relationship. There were several scenes that involved almost sex but kept you wanting like the characters. It was good that Serath wanted Rafael as much as he her instead of forced intimacy.
This story kept my interest and I wanted to fininsh! I felt like Abe threw in some unnecessary characters (Like, why did Rafe's mom show up suddenly at the oddest time and stay??) The bad guy, the grandfather was typical crazy at the end. I felt the ending was odd, like she didn't know how to end it. Some of the beautiful flow and descriptions ended. Last part of the book not as great as most of the book. But overall, romantic scenes were wonderful but tame enough for teens or new to romance readers. Loved Abe's descriptive writing ! This was an enjoyable read with twists and turns and unexpected turns in the relationship of Rafael and Sareth

I honestly don't know what it could be, but it felt like something was missing from this book. I liked Serath and I hurt for her so much. Life gave her horrible cards. She was so lonely. Rafael was difficult to get to know, but his walls came down slowly.
It was coincidentally good timing to read this book around Christmas and the New Year as it took place between 999 and 1000. I liked the book, but like I mentioned before, it felt like something was missing. I may never know...

Beautiful, mystical writing
Shane Abe just gets better and better. The legend of this story was well written but the scenery and atmosphere were perfect in every way! I could feel the rain and the sand, see her eyes and the mermaids and so much more. I was amazingly well done!

This one is not a favorite, but I wasn't disappointed. I just didn't get into it as much as other books by this author. As of this book, I have read every single Shana Abe novel. I'm heading to pick up the one she wrote under another name!

The book is disgusting. Male chauvinism at it's finest and it's so incredibly disappointing and sad that a women wrote this. Rafael seems to think that he owns Serath and orders her about and just wants to have sex with her for the entire 336 pages and claims that he loves her just to have a go at her. Do women who read this find this attractive or romantic? because it isn't.

I found this at the library and had never read anything by her. I was pleasantly surprised and will read more of her.
