I've read several Tarot books that all talk about the symbolism of the decks, individual cards and decks, spreads and more. This is the first one that explains in easy to understand language what to do with the decks.
Rather than being geared to a specific deck, this is a general book that explains what you can do with a deck - any deck. One of the things they say is "every symbol can really mean anything at all." - which surprised me. The other books I've read were all very detailed into what the symbols in each deck meant, but the authors here say that the cards can carry a range of meaning - that it all depends on the context of the reading. Which makes sense to me.
They go through exercises that help you to learn bridging (connecting visual symbols on the cards so theymake sense in the context of the reading), pinpointing (finding the center of the card so as to fine-tune bridging) and more, including how to hold a dialog or conversation with your cards.
The book goes through instuctions on how to ask questions correctly (noting that different decks have different "voices") and how to do readings for individuals, groups, parties, relationships and more. There are games you can play with the decks and chaptes on self-discovery through Tarot (especially with lucid dreaming).
Finally, they detail twelve different spreads and how to read them and follow that with an extensive glossary and suggest places online where you can find more information.
Honestly, this was one of the best books I've seen on Tarot. Though it is mostly aimed at beginners, I believe more experienced users will also get use from it. I will most definitely recommend this to anyone with an interest in learning more about Tarot.

This book is worth its weight in gold and came to me exactly when I needed it. Katz & Goodwin are professionals and they share a wealth of experience and advice about reading tarot for others. Full of examples and activities. Highly recommend.

I can not give this book any less then the full 5 stars simply cause it is just the book I needed at just the right time. It is NOT a book with card meanings but rather a book about hands on advice how to read tarot, ideas on what to do to really get into the groove with the language of tarot, how to meet people, the world, yourself through the lens of tarot.

Tarot Face to Face is a book whose title is slightly misleading — I found that instead of “Using cards in your everyday life,” this book is geared towards tarot readers getting ready to make the jump to reading professionally. This makes it a valuable addition to your tarot library, especially if you are starting out reading professionally, or contemplating it as an option later on.
I appreciate that this book provides some tarot basics, but it’s more of an overview. This book assumes a level of proficiency in tarot that makes it something of a rarity. Many modern tarot books suffer from “page bloat”, using 40-80 pages just to walk readers through every card in the deck. You’ll find none of that here. There are 5 pages of tarot basics, and then delves into the real meat of the book, using spreads, reading intuitively, reading narratively, and exercises for expanding your practice and discovering your own unique reading style. It explores everything from the Kabbalah approach and astrology-based readings to neat spins on love readings (which many readers either love or hate.) These approaches are less spreads and more “This is how to read in this manner, using your personal reading style.”
There’s a dedicated section called “Elevator Tarot” that provides boilerplate/scripted responses to some of the most common questions, concerns, or objections people have to tarot, which can really help a new professional reader from being ambushed by the “Gotcha Guys” who hate tarot, but sure seem to love hanging out near the tarot readers to try and trap them in their own words. This section also includes clear guidance on maintaining your facial composure during a reading (the tarot version of a poker face) so that your clients feel at ease.
Likewise, the book addresses how to identify different types of people and their concerns, with guidance on how to alleviate fears or clarify expectations. This includes professional composure, effectively communicating your knowledge/experience, making a first impression, and props, regalia, rituals, and other elements of a professional tarot reading.
There’s also significant page space devoted to the legal aspects of professional tarot reading, including the disclaimers and disclosures you should have to avoid liability, as well as basic tarot business and marketing information. There’s a rich appendix of online resources and endnotes, as well as an extensive bibliography, so readers can add to their knowledge.
As a former stylist, I really appreciated this book because while there are many books out there that teach you how to read tarot, there are very few that teach you how to push your creative limits as a reader, and how to create a professional space for your clients. It’s business and marketing education for a discipline that has no real template (outside of stereotypes.) Truly a gem if you want to push yourself, refine or expand your reading style, and shake things up. But even more importantly, it is the type of professional business marketing information that can create a better professional experience for both you and your readers.

July 22, 2016Katz and Goodwin deliver a lot of good, researched information in very accessible prose. The activities and (gated) spreads are engaging--I haven't completed all of them (some are specifically time-based and some I just felt like waiting to do). While I didn't agree with all of the ideas presented in this book, I was generally inspired to follow my own path; for instance, the reader is encouraged to design their own spreads, and this text helped me figure out a way to design spreads based on poetic forms.

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. It doesn’t really read like it’s meant for beginners but I can see how throwing a pupil into the lions den can be very informative. I love the different spreads, and their approach to reading.

This book was excellent in giving me all the start up tools I need to continue on my journey to learning tarot. If you are looking to take your reading a step further then I recommend checking out this book to enhance what you know and learn a ton of new spreads and also how to create your own.

Definitely a keeper! This book goes into how to read not only for yourself but for others as well. It is a very practical book, discussing different types of activities and games that you can play with your tarot, and also spreads for every area of life.

This was a very insightful book about tarot and doing various spreads/readings, and ethics. I enjoyed it and managed to get through it pretty quickly.
