Forced off the road by another car, a woman awakens in a hospital with amnesia. Then a handsome stranger appears and informs her he is her baby's father and that she disappeared seven months ago. Now they must put their trust in each other to find their child and discover who wants her dead--and why. First in a two-part series.
Barbara's love of writing developed out of a love of reading. Growing up in an all-boy neighborhood, she spent quite a bit of time reading through her mother's large library, many of which were romantic novels. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, she went into Public Relations, but soon discovered that writing was her true passion.
Barbara was traditionally published for many years, then formed her own publishing company FOG CITY PUBLISHING in 2011 and has since sold over 10 million books! She has published 75 novels ranging from mystery thrillers to romantic suspense and contemporary romance.
Her book SUMMER SECRETS was a #1 New York Times bestseller! And twenty-five other novels have also appeared on the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Lists. She is currently writing two ongoing series, a contemporary romance series set in Whisper Lake and a romantic suspense series: Off The Grid: FBI Series. She is also known for her bestselling Callaway Family Series, which offers up fourteen books and two novellas.
When Barbara isn't writing or publishing, which isn't very often these days, she is playing tennis, hanging out with friends and family in beautiful Lake Tahoe or reading books!

Heavy on the mystery, light on the romance...a combination I enjoy!
The focus was on the solving the unknown circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Jake and Sarah's child's, which in turn began to solve Sarah's conceived betrayal of Jake. As the pace picks up and things become clear, the pieces start to fit together, Sarah and Jake find their way back to each other. There were also a few key secondary characters that added additional depth to the read, and they started to form a relationship of their own, also very interesting. So much mystery, a little wild and crazy at times, but I found myself having a hard time putting this book down.
This was my first read by this author and I'll definitely be going back for more!
*Silent Run is part of the Kindle Unlimited program, which I absolutely love! A great cost effective way to read books without breaking the bank! *
Silent Run has been on my kindle since 2012. Still not sure why it took me so long to read it, but I am glad I finally did. Silent Run is a slow burn suspenseful novel that grabbed my attention from the first page. It kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.
Like most of the books in this genre, the focus of the story was on the suspense, leaving the romance with a minor role. In this instance, it worked pretty well as the main characters were already in a relationship, albeit a complex one. Complex, as it was a relationship built on lies, but as the story progressed, the rationale for the lies became clear. Based on the circumstances under which the lies developed, I understood the heroine’s (Sarah’s) actions. However, what I had a hard time with was her actions after her past caught up to her. Actions, which led to her current predicament, which involved her having amnesia, her daughter missing and the father of said daughter (Jake) angry at her for what he perceived as her betrayal. Added to all of this, someone wants her dead. Now both she and Jake have to work at unravelling the lies, as this is the key to finding their daughter and to find out who wants Sarah dead.
Jake’s attitude towards her is cold, which is understandable. However, maintaining this attitude proved a challenge as his love for her remained strong despite the lies and betrayal. As they worked together to get to the truth, Jake would learn that all is not black and white.
I loved how Jake and Sarah grew throughout the story. They both recognized and acknowledged the mistakes they made and were willing to take the necessary steps to make amends.
The secondary characters also helped to drive the story. The one I most intriguing was Jake’s brother, Dylan. I was happy to discover his story would be told in the sequel.
Although the story did not move at a fast pace, there was never a dull moment. The author created an atmosphere that had me eagerly turning the pages. The story flowed seamlessly, and the events came together to create a satisfactory ending.
Conclusion/Recommendation Silent Run was an addictive tale that I finished in two sittings. This is my first time reading Barbara Freethy and I am sure it will not be my last.
One rainswept night along the Pacific coastline, a woman had a car accident and woke up in a hospital bed with no memory. Jake Sanders entered the room and told both the doctor and his patient: she was Sarah Tucker, his long-lost girlfriend and the mother of his child. He demanded that Sarah return their 16-month-old daughter to him immediately.
White lies, mayhem and murder took the front seat in Silent Run. With the help of his investigative brother, Dylan, and Sarah's past resurfacing in bits and pieces, Jake needed to let go of his immediate anger if he wanted to see his daughter ever again.
Unaware she was a parent, Sarah left with Jake hoping to save a toddler and learn her true identity. Afraid to daydream, take a nap or sleep, she was terrified of what her subconscious would reveal.
During the first hours, Jake thought Sarah was lying to cover up the pain of the previous seven months. Now he wasn't sure; everything was no longer black or white. I enjoyed that Jake was cautious; Sarah wasn't the only one who suffered from anxiety. He was willing to admit that he overlooked mixed signals that she had sent during their relationship. His intuition was faulty.
As her memory came back, Sarah realized she could have made better choices. Another writer's marketing ploy listed this story as "sheer-hold-your-breath-suspense". I disagree. It started out slowly with the tension building in waves. I tagged it as 'mild suspense' and there is a reason. Sarah was playing a game of chess with her life; after eight years, it had started to tumble down. I considered this mystery and romance middle-of-the-road.
Started this one, then stopped reading it, started it again, then stopped. Eventually said to myself - go finish this book. It was a good read. Found it a bit slow in the beginning but the pace picked up about halfway through. Wouldn't be a favourite or a re-read but a solid enough book.
This was a re-read for me. I first read books one and two in 2013 and read this one again today.
This story opens with a twenty-eight-year-old woman in the hospital with total amnesia due to someone purposely running her off a mountain road through a guardrail and down a cliff of sorts. She doesn't recognize herself in the mirror and has no idea what her name is.
When a good looking young man of thirty-three walks into her hospital room furious at her with accusations flying she has no idea who he is. He informs her that her name is Sarah and he was her live in boyfriend, Jake, and the father of their daughter. He's not convinced she has amnesia and has found out she has hidden the bulk of her life from him. He went out of the country for two weeks on business and when he returned home there was no evidence that she or the baby girl had ever lived there. For seven months he has done nothing but look for her, grieve for her and his daughter and become more angry as time marched on. His brother, Dylan, has been helping him with research on locating Sarah's and Caitlin's whereabouts and also trying to fill in the gaps of the last twenty years of her life. The info is sketchy at best, while most of it is non existent. It all began when her parents were killed in an auto accident when she was eight.
Jakes fit to be tied. There is so much anger in him towards Sarah for keeping his daughter from him. But more than the anger is the hurt and pain that her betrayal has caused. She fears he will never get over this, never be able to forgive what she's done.
To complicate matters their daughter is missing and since she has amnesia they don't know who she's with or where she is.
The story unfolds slowly, maybe a bit too slow for my taste. I just kept thinking that they weren't getting anywhere, but then it starts to come together. I loved the way these two loved each other and their baby but Jake is very determined to leave her out of his life. Shes brought him too much pain and heartache. He feels he could never trust her again. All she wants is his forgiveness as she slowly discovers how much she loves him and why she did what she did.
I will clue you in that Sarah had very good reasons for doing what she did. It just takes her a good while to piece it all together. Jake sticks by her side through all this because what choice did he really have. He wanted to be present if she regained even a smidgen of her memory.
This was an engrossing romantic suspense book.. The heroine, Sarah, wakes up in the hospital after an accident with amnesia. When her former lover, Jake, shows up demanding to know why she ran away from him months ago and what she has done with their baby, she starts to realize that she has serious problems in her life. The novel follows Sarah and Jake as they try to find their baby and figure out why someone wants Sarah dead. Jake is understandably furious with Sarah over leaving with their child and over all of the lies that he now knows she told him, but he still wants to protect her. This book was enjoyable and was a very fast read. I thought that it ended the story of Jake and Sarah rather abrubtly, apparently in order to devote most of the epilogue to secondary characters to set the stage for the sequel. I would have liked to have seen a little bit more time devoted to Sarah and Jake at the end. I felt like they went from Jake's distrust of Sarah to HEA too quickly to feel really believable. I would have rated the book 5 starts if not for this.

This book had me turning page after page! I didn't realize how fast I was reading it until I finished it in two days! You can't pull yourself away from the book after a chapter ends...you are too compelled to read the next one to find out what happens next!
Romance, mystery, suspense...it's a great book and I can't wait to read the sequel, Silent Fall!
3.5 stars. The second half was better than the first half. I enjoyed the process of collecting clues to solve the mystery.
STORY BRIEF: The story begins with a car following Sarah. She is driving in a storm, afraid, and has an accident. She ends up in the hospital with amnesia. Her 16 month old daughter Caitlyn is missing. Jake arrives and claims to be Caitlyn’s father. He says Sarah lived with him for 2 years and then ran away 7 months ago taking Caitlyn. He is angry and wants his daughter Caitlyn back. Meanwhile someone tries to kill Sarah while she is in the hospital. Jake and Sarah leave the hospital and together they start searching for Caitlyn. Sarah’s instincts tell her to keep the police out of it. They start with a few clues from the police and then pieces of her memory periodically return, which give them more clues to follow.
REVIEWER’S OPINION: The first half dragged a bit. Sarah was frustrated at having no memory. Jake was angry and frustrated because Sarah lied to him, left him, took their child, and can’t remember anything. A number of conversations seemed repetitive with Jake asking and Sarah not remembering.
The second half was better. Sarah remembered bits and pieces of her past. Other people provided clues. Catherine was an interesting character, a vegetarian and a psychic artist with a menagerie of pets. I enjoyed and looked forward to her parts in the story.
This book was not typical for romantic suspense because we do not see the development of a relationship. The story begins after the relationship ended. The couple is apart and at odds with each other. The relationship questions are: Will they get together again? Why did she leave? Will Jake forgive her? The suspense questions are: Where is Caitlyn? Why is Sarah running? Who is trying to kill her?
DATA: Story length: 378 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 1, four pages long. Setting: current day California. Copyright: 2008. Genre: romantic mystery suspense.
Sarah was involved in a horrific car crash and awakens in a hospital room without any memory of her life or how she ended up in the hospital. When a handsome man arrives, he tells her that her name is Sarah and that he has been searching for her after she abruptly left him seven months ago. And, to top it all off, he tells her that she took their young daughter, Caitlyn, when she left him.
Why can't Sarah remember anything and where is Caitlyn? Without her memory, will Sarah and Jake be able to find Caitlyn unharmed? And, why did Sarah flee so suddenly? The mystery starts to unfold and it seems that Sarah has been living a lie for a very long time.
The story was interesting, but seemed a little contrived. It did hold my interest, but when they time for the whole truth to be revealed, it seemed a little rushed after all the buildup.
It took me quite awhile to finish this book because I fell asleep every time I started to read it. This should have been a sign that I should give it up. It had such an interesting synopsis but fell short. I'm not even going to bother discussing everything that was wrong about it. The only reason it isn't getting one star is because it was better than Saving Rachael, which I consider the worst book ever written.
The first in the Silent series by Barbara Freethy. I loved it. This grabbed me from page one and I had a great ride through the entire book. Looking forward to book 2 and it will be going on my keeper shelf.
This was the Barnes and Noble Nook serial read for September. This was an interesting one. A woman wakes up in the hospital after a car accident and has no memory of who she is. A man shows up claiming to be her ex and says she ran off with their child with no explanation. But she cannot remember him or this child, let alone where the girl is. She soon realizes she is in extreme danger, and she must try to piece together the small glimpses of memory she recovers to figure out who she was and who is after her. I enjoyed this, though I really did not like Jake or his brother. I get that they are angry because she left with his child, but treating her like absolute shit when she just had a traumatic brain injury, has no memory and is a bit much. She put up with a lot, and it did not help her while she was trying to recover her memories. And then her thinking just rubbed me the wrong way. He was just meh, but I really liked all of her friends. Those women were badass survivors who stepped up when she needed help. Girl power.
Sarah Tucker is run off the road by an assailant, and when she wakes up in the hospital, she has complete amnesia. Part of the mystery is solved when Jake Sanders arrives to tell her her name, and inform her that they were a couple for two years, until she took off seven months ago - with their child in tow! So where is her baby now? Why did Sarah take off? Who or what is she running from? She and Jake set out to uncover the mystery and get their daughter back.
Ugh. This was a slog. It took me a week to read. A pattern clearly emerges in the plot, and just keeps on hitting those same beats over and over again, never really progressing:
Sarah: I can't remember anything! But I know I must have had a good reason for taking off like I did!
Jake: I hate you and I can't trust you and I will never forgive you!
Rinse and repeat.
There's a pointless subplot involving Jake's equally asshole brother Dylan tracking down a woman, Catherine Hilliard, who says she's pretty sure she knew Sarah from eight years ago, except her name was Jessica back then. Catherine is also psychic! Oh, boy. Realistically, Dylan and Catherine are only here because they get their own book after this one. They don't need to be here, because the clues they uncover don't amount to much once Sarah conveniently recovers her memory.
The plot is bland. Not much happens. The reasons behind Sarah disappearing are ho-hum and uninteresting, and don't quite justify her taking off with her daughter the way she did. I understood Jake's anger, but reading about him bitching and moaning at Sarah again and again and again just about drove me crazy and ultimately made me not like him. Especially when he punches a wall at one stage. Sarah knows he could never turn his anger on her in that way and blah, blah, blah. I get sick of reading that excuse for loose, uncontrolled male rage in so-called heroes.
The climax is very brief and pretty much resolved off-page. Jake continues his pity party right up until the very end, and then just changes his mind moments later and forgives Sarah for everything without any understandable reason or explanation. Yeah, it sounds like him and Sarah are going to have a real healthy relationship. Blech.
No stones left unturned as they say. That is always the case with Barbara Freethy's books. In my opinion, that style is working to her advantage. There's quite a different tone and intensity though in this book as compared to her other novels.
Although everything was revealed at the end, the author took her sweet time in building up the story; not to the point of monotonous and boring, though.
I enjoyed this one and I am not wasting time so I'll go directly to the second book in this series.
Silent Run is book one in the Sanders Brothers series by Barbara Freetly. Sarah Tucker involved in a car accident and woke up with no memory. Jake Sanders barged into her hospital room and demanded where his daughter is. Sarah had no memory of Jake or her daughter. Jake needed answers, and the only way he will find them was to take Sarah home. However, Sarah started to was her life a lie. The readers of Silent Run will continue to follow Sarah and Jake to find out what happens.
I enjoy reading Silent Run. I engage with this book from the first page, and I could not put the book down. I love Barbara Freetly portrayal of the characters of Silent Run and how they interacted with each other throughout this book. Silent Run is well written and research by Barbara Freetly. I like the way Barbara Freetly describes the settings of Silent Run that complements this book's plot.
The readers of Silent Run will understand the problems if you suffered a traumatic brain injury. Also, Silent Run's readers will learn about the issues that witness high profile cases before they testify in court.
Silent Run by Barbara Freethy is a must read story that will keep you turning pages well into the night. Sarah wakes up in a hospital bed not knowing who or where she is. Trying to regain her memory and her what happened in her past will keep you in suspense throughout the book. Jake tries to help her, but can he forgive her for running out on him and taking their baby daughter?
I enjoyed reading this story which was a B&N serial read on my Nook app where a new chapter or two would be added each day. It is a wonderful way to meet new authors and new genres. I always review every book that I read. I highly recommend this book and this author.
DNF 33% - it just didn't hold my attention. I did read the end to see what happened and it was rather predictable. MADE ME SLEEPY...zzzzz NOT A BAD BOOK - but unfortunately the principle characters were rather meh and the plot had far too many holes.
The suspense/ mystery part was ok but unrealistic. The romance - then it was far too formulaic (as a few reviewers pointed out).
There were so many instances that didn't make sense or weren't thought through. If you're not bothered about the suspense/crime aspect to the book then it won't bother you, but examples:
1. The police response to the heroine's amnesia and missing child was completely off. I won't give too much away but the police would be far more through with their database, and as it crosses States perhaps even involve the FBI database.
2. A random man enters the heroine's hospital room and no one checks the CCTV cameras in the corridors?
3. The Doctors speak to the ex boyfriend regarding her diagnoses - what happened to patient confidentiality?
4. The heroine could have been running from a domestic violence situation (she has amnesia so she won't know). The police don't ideally allow the ex-boyfriend private time with the patient.
Loads more but I can't be bothered to list them.
==================
I also had problems with the characters.
Heroine: rather dull. She's a pretty blonde blue-eyed former waitress who falls in love and has a baby. Other than being on the run (from something related to her past) there isn't anything else interesting about her. She's like a tired and used up dish cloth.
Hero: he's a nice guy but again very formulaic, tall, dark handsome well-to-do architect who likes to take care of people. There just wasn't any ooppmh to his character.
==================
The romance was rather formulaic and there just wasn't anything really going for it. I like amnesia stories where the hero or heroine find themselves again and their romance, but this wasn't like that. It was, like another reviewer pointed out a paint-by-numbers episode. ===================
Overall, NOT A BAD BOOK, just not for me. Didn't hold my interest hence the 1*
If you had lost your memory of your past would you do anything to get it back? A young woman mentally fights through to find out who she is and her past. Through the battle of this she hurts those who love her. Freethy's Silent Run captured me with its suspense.
The characters bring out the suspense for you. There isn't just one narrator. The main characters narrate continously in the book. A young woman, named Sarah, wakes up in a hospital with amnesia. Jake, her husband, helps her try to remember to find their missing daughter. Sarah is frighten to remember because she feels someone is after her because she has these nightmares as if they are real. Also, she must have been in danger because she left her husband with their daughter. Her past is catching up to her.
Throughout the book it shows you that your family and friends will forgive and forget the past and live for now. People have their reason as to why they hide certain things or not say much to you. Love and hate go together with some of the characters.
This book will have you on your toes! Turning page after page you will get closer to Sarah's past. I recommend this book to all readers.
It's as if I've read a different book than most other reviewers. I've read this author before and mostly liked her. This book, however, I did not like. Jake was a bully. Even when they slowly uncover why Sarah has done what she did, he keeps accusing her, rubbing it in that she lied, that she made stupid mistakes etc. Sometimes he's suddenly interested in having sex with her, but straight after he's back to being mad and accusing her every chance he gets. I nearly stopped reading. Sarah was a kind of a doormat in the past because she 'did not want to rock the boat'. Jake says he likes her with more spunk - which made me wonder why their relation lasted - but she still doesn't show spunk IMO; she's just the same doormat.
This book kept me reading long after I should have been in bed! A woman is driving up the California coast highway when she is forced off the road and her car sent over a cliff. She awakens in a hospital with amnesia. Does she trust the man who shows up claiming she is the mother of his child, and both she and the toddler had disappeared 8 months ago? After someone tries to kill her in the hospital she trusts her gut enough to go with this man who claims she is the mother of his child. Does her memory come back? Do they find their child? Or is he the one who wants her dead?
This is a 2.5-star book, and I would have rounded up if it weren't for the 753 excerpts taking up the last 10% of the book, which always gets on my nerves. Other than that, it was nothing to write home about. Romantic suspense is difficult to do well, and in this case the suspense was somewhat decent (if you ignore the ridiculous amnesia plot point) and the romance was utterly standard, producing the end result reminiscent of those paint-by-the-numbers pictures: it's not actively bad, but it's not really art, either.
This is my 1st Freethy book. So glad I read this. Easy reading that snared me in very fast and made for compelling reading. Looking forward to the next installment.
Suspenseful novel that pulls you in from page 1 to find out why Sarah is running scared. Ending wants you knowing more and upon finishing the book I found there was an excerpt from the next book "Silent Fall" which continues delving into the lives of the characters. Enjoyable read. Shed some tears along the way. Recommend it. Looking forward to reading "Silent Fall" as well as some of the author's other books. New author for me.
Story about a woman, Sarah, who is run off the road only to wake up in a hospital bed with amnesia. Her estranged boyfriend and supposed father of her daughter shows up at the hospital furious with her for running away. So begins the chase of trying to figure out where their daughter is and why she is in danger. It was a super fast read. I liked it and purchased the next book in the series because I am a sucker for characters that continue in books.
The story started out interesting but shortly after the H was brought into the story I was seriously irritated with his attitude and behavior. At times I wanted to throw my kindle across the room he annoyed me so much. I understand that the H is justified in his feelings but, I had had enough of him about halfway through the book. The ending just didn't work for me either, probably because I couldn't stand the H by the end.
This is the story and Sarah and Jake(?) and their daughter, Caitlyn. The literary aspect of suspence was very well used, but I felt that the book had a little too much figurative language. Things like 'languidly strolled across the cracked, uneven sidewalk' which was not in the book, are extremeley off putting. All in all, it was a very good story.
