"Manhounds of Antares" is the sixth book in the epic saga of Dray Prescot of Earth and of Kregen, and the first volume of the Havilfar cycle.
This is the 6th book in the Dray Prescot Series, the 1st book of the 2nd Cycle and honestly they've flown by in terms of the time it's taken me to read them. Of course, I tend to read another completely different book in between each Dray Prescot book so as to keep it fresh.
In this adventure Dray is once again snatched up by the Star Lords and thrown face first into a steaming pile of Leem do-do and not told a single word of what to do about it. He try's a few things and finds himself irrevocably thrown back to whence he's started. In the process freeing countless slaves (that's his personal calling) and ultimately screwing up the vague and ambiguous plans of the Star Lords.
One interesting fact about this story (and that of Prince of Scorpio, Dray Prescot #5) is that that (Star Lords) have chosen to speak to him through their flying snitch bird the illustrious and beautiful Gdoinye. This is a new and interesting feature as it's taken them quite a long time to do this, even the Savanti still haven't attempted to make contact. I guess all those years have gone by and they still hold a grudge?
I was a bit disappointed with the ending, like Akers got tired of the story and just stopped, but considering how many books there are in the series, I assume it picks up again soon... ;)
Dray finally gets to marry Delia! Everything is looking on the up and up, Dray even fathers twins but the Star Lords have other plans. Plucked away from his friends and family, Dray finds himself in the slave pens. Naked and weaponless, Dray has no idea where he is or even what the Star Lords want from him. Seeking the person or persons of interest to the Star Lords, Dray attempts escape. Only to be informed that he is an idiot by the Star Lords messenger and sent back to the slave pens. This goes on repetitiously until he finally discovers the person of interest. Wanting nothing more than to just go home to Delia, Dray must finish the Star Lords wishes or risk being sent back to Earth as his consequence. Awesome work by the late Kenneth Bulmer.
If you are a John Carter of Mars fan or enjoy the "displaced person on another world" then this series is for you. The books run in long story arcs so you can read just a few to complete a plot line or go for the whole set. Akers creates a very complex world for the hero to adventure in. Recommended
I gave this five stars because in one scene Dray Prescot is fighting two martial artists and he decides the best way to beat them is grabbing one by his feet and using him as a weapon. As far as I can tell the only way this would work is because the guy you were fighting was in shock. 5 stars.
