When Potter disappears from Hallowed Manor for twenty-four hours, he goes in search of the only person he thinks will be able to give him answers as to why the world has been pushed. That person is his first love, Sophie.
But Sophie has been pushed, too, and is running for her life. In a world where wolves live amongst humans, Potter must save Sophie while trying to search for answers.
During his search, he discovers that some things are best left secret.

Tsk Tsk Tsk...Oh Potter...the places Tim takes you, the predicaments he puts you in. First of all let me state that this may be a "novella" but it sure doesn't read like one. There was so much packed into the pages of 1.5 that I had felt like I had read a whole novel. This is probably going to be the hardest review I have ever had to write. Why you ask? Well for two reasons: One being that because unless you have read Tim's Black Hill Farm books, there are connections you just wouldn't get and two being the fact that there are so many surprises in store for the reader I REALLY don't want to ruin this read for anyone! Not new fans of Tim's books or current fans who just haven't made it this far yet. Upfront I apologize for the vagueness of this review! So, that being said, I must say I loved getting to know Sophie, even though it is the "pushed" version of her. I love how she tied into the whole story and getting to know more about her. I loved that a certain character makes an appearance. I love the laugh out loud moments Tim filled the story with. I love how Tim keeps me guessing right until the end when I am screaming at him for not writing more and making me wait, although he doesn't know that I do that because I never tell him. Ah hell, guess the cats out of the bag ;) In all honesty, each book, whether it be a novella or a novel, is better than the last. I have loved watching Tim grow as an author and also where he has taken Kiera Hudson and gang. You never know what to expect when you dive into chapter one of a Tim O'Rourke book. If you haven't read any of his books, give him a try. If you want in on the Kiera Hudson series start with Vampire Shift, or give the Black Hill Farm books a go. Ok, enough plugging, just read it already! :)
For all the things I cannot say in my review, for fear of spoiling, I can say my fave quotes without saying who said them.
All I will say is Tim has a MAJOR TOUCH DOWN with this little novella. It screams genius with what he has done in it. Some may understand more than others as he has done something clever in his writing.....but I can’t say as it is early days!
Yes, that is Potter’s ex girlfriend Sophie, draped all over Potter on the book cover. Stunning, beautiful with a body that any guy would worship, not to mention her looks. I was very nervous when I saw this cover. I was like, what is Tim up to? Nothing surprises me....*cough* with Tim’s writing. He is very unpredictable. Which technically means, I get surprised a lot..so I think that is a confusing statement..ha!
I loved we got to know Sophie in this novella. We get into both Sophie and Potter’s heads. I wanted to not like Sophie, but I absolutely loved her. In a way she has Potter’s snark. I hope she sticks around..........?? I think she would be a lot of fun.
See, how hard it is writing this review...I have to keep pulling on the brake. I have to admit I did see an awesome plot idea when reading this novella, would be hilarious...but...who knows where Tim will go? I just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Awww.....Potter is/was/is??? a romantic under all that cranky......bless.
I bow down, I worship the parts of this book that made me jump up and down and send emails to Tim.
Tim had me grinning from ear to ear with his writing, I was laughing out loud, I was yelling at the computer screen....ewwwww...he does love his gorey icky bits too, they literally drip from the pages.
But, that is Tim, and that is why we come back over and over to read his next instalments. For the life of me I cannot understand why this series has not been snatched up by a publisher.....one of the wonders of the world..hehe!
I am rather chuffed that I got me a dedication, I am Michelle Auricht, I am not bragging, I just love Tim did that. I have adored Potter from the start, I saw his potential when some thought him a jerk, I always knew he was going to make me laugh out loud, sometimes to the point that the Mutley laugh would take over.
From one pond to another, thankyou:D
I love how much Tim truly cares about all his fans. Tim has listed all the fans that put their name down on his FB page in the front of the book. I love that Lynda his wife got the spotlight shone on her, aka the ‘Hacker’. I always tell Tim that a woman is always right....hehe!! Well done ‘Hacker’, I so want some outtakes.
I'm like Precious from Lord Of The Rings.....I'm all bug eyed and grabby, grabby for the next installment, my fingers are wiggling, wanting........no pressure Tim..hehe!
See how I managed not to say anything about the story....cause it would spoil , here come the quotes.
FAVE QUOTES:
“But I shot you,” he gasped, looking at me as if I were some kind of ghost.
“And it fucking hurt,” I hissed. “So don’t do it again, it’s not very nice.”
So why should I go and get myself into a heap of shit for her now? I attracted shit like a cow’s arse attracted flies and I didn’t need it, not now.
They were nothing like the skimpy, silky numbers I had seen Kiera wear. I pulled out another pair. “Jeez, I never knew you wore parachutes!”
“Somebody help me – there’s a man in here sniffing my knickers!”
“Jesus!” I groaned. “What was that for?”
“For breaking up me and Marty!” she shouted.
“Who the fuck is Marty?” I said, rubbing my bollocks.
“He was my boyfriend and we broke up because of those letters you sent me. He thought I was sleeping with you.”
“You were sleeping with me,” I tried to remind her.
“I don’t ever remember having sex with you!” she shouted.
“You really know how to boost a man’s ego,” I shot back.
She raised her hand as if to strike me again, and I snatched hold of her fist. “Once is enough, sweetheart.”
“I couldn’t give a monkey’s toss if she looked like the Elephant Man and had an arse the size of King Kong – although she does have the sweetest cheeks I’ve ever seen.
"You’re still a scruffy-looking arsehole.”
“I’m not scruffy-looking,” I said.
“Get the fuck out of here!” I gasped.
“Shut your filthy mouth! You’re in a graveyard, for fuck’s sake!” ...... “But you just said the ‘F’ word too, didn’t you?”

I am a Nook owner which is great except when books are released on Amazon way before Barnes & Noble. This is one of those times when my patients wore out and I just have to down load the Amazon version and read it on Kindle for the PC. Funny how every other time this has happened has also been a Tim O’Rourke book. First things first, the cover! Carles Barrios has does it again! I am pretty sure other Kiera fans thought the same thing when the cover was revealed. That blonde is NOT Kiera and why are her hands all over POTTER? There is excitement for a new book but then a hint of dread of the unknown with a cover like that. For the book of course a huge THANK YOU to Tim O’Rourke for such a wonderful series and amazing characters, but also a big THANK YOU to Lynda O’Rourke (for saving Potter). I completely loved being listed as a Potter fan and as always honored to be listed in the “Thanks to:” section. Now to the book; there really isn’t much I can that will not spoil it. I can certainly say that I was not disappointed and love the twists and turns in this book. We learned from Dead Flesh (Kiera Hudson Series Two Book 1) that the world they have returned to has been “pushed” and isn’t what they once knew. In this book we learn that the world is even more “pushed” than we thought. There are shocking returns of characters and when one character first appears, I knew who it was!! Tim even gives a HUGE hint that there still maybe more characters to return. The Potter we all know and love is definitely the guy we thought him to be. He talks about his true feelings for Kiera and it is so heart-warming. I couldn’t help but be mad at parts, laugh at others, and even tear up at a few. The ending will keep your gears turning wondering what will happen next even for Sophie and hoping to read more about a character you wanted so much not to like. Again, I can’t wait for the next book. I highly recommend this book and it most certainly gets 5 out of 5!!
I just love Potter and this book takes place when Kiera and the crew come back from the dead in "Dead Flesh" so you get to see things from his perspective. After the world was "pushed" and being back from the dead, you came to understand why the Elders brought him back. He loved Kiera so much and would do anything for her, he was her perfect mate. (Warning spoilers to follow) I was so proud of him for not succumbing to Sophie even though she was his first true love, his devotion to Kiera was awesome and that is why I am "Team Potter." For someone who is so brash, abrasive and a chain-smoking wise ass most of the time, inside he is like a big teddy bear who hates to keep something from those he loves even if there is a good enough reason why. Yet he has the heart of a lion and would rip your heart out to protect those he loves. It was nice to see that Murphy is still around in the new world and trying to protect and serve whilst keeping his friends safe. I did feel sorry for Sophie as she a hard time too adjusting to the world that she knew and her memories of Potter felt like dreams and then she realised they were actually a reality of a different time. It would be hard to finally remember that you loved someone so much only to find out they had moved on to another life and you were left feeling as if it were yesterday. The cliff hanger at the end will keep me anxious to read the next book to see where Sophie ended up. Well done Tim, another page turner and I read it in one sitting.
I absolutely love Potter so much more after reading this book, and OMG i friggin love that Murphy is back with his slippers made me laugh so much and so the right character to bring back with them, we had a great insight into potter and his world and how he is like he is, and i love the passion he expresses for Keira especially from a man who is no good with words (maybe he need's to do more action Tim hint hint).
After reading this book i think it has helped put some more perspective to Dead Flesh, i think if i had read them the other way then i would'nt have been so confused with the first book's story and twist's, i really love keira and the gang but i have to say the book's always leaving you with more questions then answers is really annoying but never fear always makes you eagerly await the next book to see what the gang get up to next.
Well done Tim I so love all the gang and their adventure's can't wait for the next instalement and of course more of the lush Potter xxxx
Tim O'Rourke has done it again!! I dont want to say much on the plot & spoil the story for anyone (Potter's Secrets are safe with me) However, let me tell you the book's title is fitting ;) Action packed & Bloody with some twists that had me jumping out of my chair & yelling "NO WAY!!!" and if you're a fan of ALL of Tim's books there are some pretty niffty surprises in this one that will leave you smiling & in awe of the brilliance that is his storytelling. Another HUGE hit!! Can't wait for more!!!! xx Cheeky =]
Without fail, every book O’Rourke writes ends up leaving me breathless. The many twists and turns always make his books a riveting read, and this novella, following Potter as he embarks on a journey of his own, is spellbinding. I loved the shift between viewpoints, and getting to hear Sophie’s side of the story was amazing. For those of you who have not followed this amazing series from the beginning, Sophie is Potter’s first love. Until now, she’s always been glossed over—readers know the general gist of things, but she’s never been a true part of the story. But O’Rourke changes all that as he shows his readers what life is like in this new pushed world. And it’s amazing.
Perhaps my favorite element of this entire novella is the constant referencing and intertwining of his Black Hill novels. If you haven’t read the Black Hill Series, the referencing won’t stand out, and the novella will just read as another epic piece produced by O’Rourke, but if you’re familiar with events in the psychologically thrilling Black Hill books, then you’re in for a treat. I just about fell off my chair when I realized what O’Rourke was doing, and I smirked at all the many references throughout. I love it!
Dead Night-Potter’s Secrets is an amazing novella that, like the title denotes, divulges secrets that will have the reader dropping his/her jaw in surprise and cheering in triumph at some of the revelations. It’s a must read, though you’ll need to have read the prior novels in the series in order to understand much of what is going on...
Oh Potter, how I love you yet want to smack the crap out of you over and over again...lol
So in this book we get to see just what Potter was up to when he left Kiera and the gang at Hollowed Manor, and I can't say I'm happy about it. Damn it Potter!!! LEAVE SOPHIE ALONE!!!!! Forget about her. Pretend she doesn't exist. She is only going to mess with your head man!
Ok, enough of me yelling at Potter. God knows he won't listen to me anyways. *rolls eyes*
Moving on shall we...
This book was so packed for of action that it felt like I read a full length novel, not just a novella. And for those of you that are thinking about skipping this novella I highly encourage you to read it. You learn a lot of stuff that your going to need to know later for this series. Overall this was a great addition to the story, and while I wanted to punch Potter in his manhood during most of this book, it was a fast read that I couldn't put down, with just the right amount of twists to set up the next book in the series. Definitely a novella that shouldn't be missed.
Well where to start with this book.....There are not too many books that affect me to the point of me shouting at my kindle one minute, holding my breath, then swooning the next but hell this is surely one of them.
Being a HUGE Potter fan this was a must read for me and I can say it's given me an insight to the brilliant mind that is Potter and builds a fast pace to the next patiently awaited book in the series with many twists and turns that you just don't know what to expect next!
Tim's writing and how he put's his stories to paper I find is very unique and like the other books in the Kiera series I am left just wanting more...
A definite must read in my opinion as Potter's secrets are safe with me :)
Who wouldn't like to sneak a peek into Potter's mind? We can't read his mind, but we can know where he's been when not with the group. Potter left the group for one hole day and came back with some stuff from Kiera's flat. Now we can find out what he was up to during those twenty-four hours, who he saw, what he did and why he came back with a thick air of mystery surrounding him. Are Kiera's feelings about him holding secrets from her, right or is she imagining things? What are Potter's true feelings for Kiera?
This short story gives you insight about what Potter does when he leaves Hallowed Manor. It goes back and forth from Potter's POV and Sophie's POV. Sophie in this "pushed" world ends up being the pathologist that was examining Kiera in the lab of the mortuary. Potter goes searching for Sophie to find out what is happening in this new world. I think I love Potter even more after this one. This little tidbit has me anxiously awaiting the next book.
I was blown away..Tim has done it again.I LOVED this book.I'm still trying to catch my breath.I can't believe there was a time I thought Potter was evil and liked Luke?I so love Potter. This really was a great story.I couldn't read it fast enough and when it was over I wanted more.I knew Murphy would come back and I was so excited to see it happen.I'm sitting here with a huge smile on my face and I'm counting the days until the next book comes out:)Awesome series!!
Really enjoyed this. It is a great quick read and I loved the extra insight into Potter. Loved the Black Hill tie in, and this book answered a few more questions from the first dead flesh book. Only part I couldn't figure out was why the wolves were so interested in Sofie before she took Kiera's blood (according too her father). It was really good and Potter made me happy by staying true. I seriously can't wait for the next Dead Flesh book. This is one of my favorite series, so unique.
I couldn't put this book down. At one point I though i was going to be very angry with Potter. I was pulled in to the book like always when I read one of Tim's books. I don't want to post any spoilers but I'm happy at who found Potter glad that he is back
Yet again another great book, mostly about Potter, so it was always gonna be good, we get to find out more about Sophie and about the world being pushed. In a nutshell the whole series is amazing and I would suggest anyone who has not read them to get them you will not be disappointed!!!
LOVED IT!!!! Wow! Loved how You Intergrated Black Hill Farm into it and funny how Murphy wasn't gone for long. Love Potter! Thanks Tim for a fun Read! Well done! !
This book from Potters POV was great, I've been wanting to read from his POV again since the last series. It was a book that had me torn! I didn't agree with my potter did what he did but I did appreciate getting to understand why he did it. It tied into the main story which I appreciated because it didn't just randomly divert from the story were on to make us feel bad for Kiera regarding what Potter does in this book. It was interesting to finally get to meet a certain character that we've known about for a little while and to understand some stuff about Potters past, why he is the way he is, how certain events have affected him and how he came to be in Ragged Cove in the first place. He does have a tragic past and I love that we got to know about it to relate and understand this male a bit better. However what he goes to do pushes things a bit out of order for the people of this world that they now find themselves in and I feel bad for those people, but not as bad as I feel for Kiera. I can only imagine that down the road kiera will earn about these events and I'm already dreading getting to that part because I don't want Kiera to feel betrayed by what Potter had done. Its a book thats made me see certain things that coming and I cant stop it or look away. It's so bad but in a good way.
I was disappointed in this one, it showed that it was a man writing this, when (spoiler sort of a little) potter walks into the room while Sophie was naked and closed the door and confused he did not want to leave and hugged her naked, then told her all about the women he is in love with while holding her naked his ex.I was very disappointed we had a love triangle in series one, let's not start another.he claims to worship her so shouldn't lust after another.
A novella of Potter emotionally cheating on Kiera for 99% of the book and then at the end while he’s chest to chest naked with another woman he decides to say that he’s in love with Kiera and she’s the only one for him. This book put a bad taste in my mouth, I used to love potter. This book mixed with his inability to communicate just completely turned me off. I feel like the first book in this spin off series was pretty good, but every book since has gotten progressively worse.
I enjoy reading from Potter's point of view. Just like the other books there are so many twists and turns that things catch you completely by surprise!
I have read at least one review that says that this novella is as good as a full novel and I have to agree. As with the regular Keira Hudson novels, there is a great storyline with plenty of mystery, action and emotion. Not to mention intense characters, be they human, wolf or Vampyrus. In this novella the world has been 'pushed' and not as we know it: the wolves are living among the humans and the Vampyrus do not exist!
The main focus for this novella is Potter's search for his first love, Sophie, as she is the only person from his last world that he thinks may exist in this 'pushed' world. He is hoping that if she exists here and he can find her, then maybe she will hold some answers to help him understand how the world was 'pushed'. His aim, ultimately, is to 'push' the world back to how it once was.
When we are introduced to Sophie she has problems of her own. She has been 'pushed' with the rest of the world. Sophie is running from the wolves and police, desperate to seek out answers to her own questions. Will she get caught? Will she discover the answers she needs? It becomes clear that Potter's role is to find out as much about this world from Sophie as he can, at the same time as trying to keep her safe from the wolves. Will this rekindle their original feelings for each other?
Even though we know from 'Dead Flesh (Keira Hudson Series 2, Book 1)' that this novella is completely about Potter and the twenty-four hours he went away from Hallowed Manor, I missed Keira. This surprised me as Potter is my favourite character, but without Keira it wasn't quite the same. That said, we must not forget that she is part of the reason for him tracking down Sophie, so that everybody can go back to the world as it were and maybe their curse from The Elders will be lifted in some way.
The world in 'Dead Night - Potter's Secrets' does not seem to be set in the past or the future but more like a parallel universe. As there are no Vampyrus in this world it is uncertain that Potter and co ever existed. However, if there is anyone from their previous life in this new 'pushed' world advice is given that it would be best not to track them down, meet them or engage with them in any way to ensure that circumstances are not changed. This reminded me of the 'Back to the Future' movies, that I have been watching recently with my son, where the 'Doc' is advising 'Marty' to not interfere with his family or friends in the past in order not to meddle with the time space continuum. I had to smile when beginning 'Dead Angels (Keira Hudson Series 2, Book 2)' as Michael J. Fox is referred to and he plays 'Marty McFly' in the 'Back to the Future' movies. However, please remember that this novella is not set in the past or the future as far as we know, just a different version of the world we are used to.
As Potter reminds me of 'Gene Hunt' from the 'Life on Mars' tv programme, this novella and previous novel 'Dead Statues' felt that it was like 'Gene Hunt' waking up in a different world rather than the character 'Sam Tyler'. 'Gene Hunt', just like Potter, would be grouchy, aggressive and temperamental on the outside, but on the inside would be confused and in search of answers in a similar way to Potter. These types of characters do not wear their heart on their sleeves, and in many ways this supports their mysteriousness and their dark side, thus making them unpredicatable but so loveable.
Throughout the Keira Hudson novels, the iPod is a regular mention and a favourite of mine. For me, it helps me connect more and adds a little reality to the fiction. In this particular book, there is a scene which uses the song 'Fix You' by 'Coldplay' which is more than appropriate. It completely sets the mood and atmosphere of the feeling of the character and where their head is at. Perfect.
In between the emotions and action that the reader is taken through this novella did hold a few nice surprises, which help keep the hope alive for Potter, Keira and co to 'push' the world back to how they once knew it. However, that is not to say that all is well. After reading, I am left wondering whether Potter will keep his secrets or not. How will they affect Potter and co in future novels?
As with all of Tim O'Rourke's Keira Hudson books this novella is fast-paced and adventurous. It is written from Sophie's perception as well as Potter's. This enables the reader to connect with the characters more by understanding them and knowing more about each one. This style allows the reader to feel like they are a part of the story. It is truly amazing.
