24 Hours Between Dream & Reality
The story is about a boy who takes an eye-opening journey to Tehran, the Capital of Iran to learn lessons of tolerance, aiming high and following one’s dreams. During the few months he lives on the streets, Latif learns more life lessons than he would have done with many years of education. He experiences harsh living conditions, discrimination and humiliation. At this young age, he has a lot of confusion and cannot figure out what is wrong with a system that sanctions such a life for children. The experiences by five of his friends add more depth to the story. Latif’s fragile soul almost crashes witnessing elements of poverty and helplessness and observing that no matter how hard his father and many others try, they still remain poor and powerless.
At the beginning the writer, Samad Behrangi, gives a detailed description of the material world surrounding his hero, the behaviors, conversations and conducts of all players, as he believes the material environment plays a major role in building up the characters of the people. But as soon as the story kicks off, it moves forward with a fast pace of the power and strength of life itself, taking the reader along with it.
Readers meet people of different social strata, with voices of each adding depth and excellent character development.
Latif spends a great deal of time outside a toy store wishing to have toys to play with and has a fascination about one particular camel who later becomes his mentor and takes him on an imaginary tour to see the other side of the society, gives him awareness as to how the system functions.
The real awakening however, is more of a wake-up call. Latif goes beyond setting a goal for his own happiness and success, as he realizes that he must find a way to identify the causes of those social problems and find solutions for them.

داستان یک فقر و یک دلبستگی کودکانه به شتر بزرگ اسباب بازی فروشی و نرسیدن به آن از سر فقر و نداری و ... آخ که چقدر درد داشت این داستان و با اینکه کتاب قدیمی ای بود اما میشه گفت هنوزم توی این زمان حال این دردها هست و شاید از همون قدیم کش اومده توی دوران جدید , این فقرها این اشک ها که هیچ کاری هم برای ریشه کن کردنش نمیشه کرد و هرچی بگیم فقط شعاره و اینکه توی روزگار لعنتی ای هستیم که هر روز نسبت به دیروز بین مردم تضاد طبقاتی بیشتری پیش میاد , مردم متوسط به سمت خط فقر میرن و مردم فقیر بیچاره تر عاجز تر میشن و اون چند درصد کم و ثروتمند هم ثروتمند تر و بی عار تر ...

نويسنده ي اين کتاب صمد بهرنگي است که از قصه پردازان قديمي مي باشد, داستانهايش نثر شيريني دارد , هم براي نوجوانان زيباست هم بزرگسالان.
داستان اينگونه شروع مي شود که:
خواننده ي عزيز،
قصه ي « خواب و بيداري» را به خاطر اين ننوشته ام كه براي تو سرمشقي باشد. قصدم اين است كه بچه هاي هموطن خود را بهتر بشناسي و فكر كني كه چاره ي درد آنها چيست؟

ادبیات کودکان در فرهنگ ما، مترادف بوده است با پند و اندرز. نویسندگان ادبیات کودکان، اغلب بزرگسالانی بوده اند که قصدشان راهنمایی کودک، به ویژه در "اطاعت" و "سر بزیری" و "مراعات" و از این قبیل سفارشات "پیرانه سر" بوده. این گونه تفکر، ناشی از کوتاهی در برآورد درک کودکان و نوجوانان، و ناپخته انگاری و "کم پنداری" اذهان جستجوگر آنان است. در مورد آثار صمد بهرنگی، نقص بزرگ دیگری هم به چشم می خورد، و آن جدا انگاری کودکان آذری از دیگر کودکان ایرانی ست. این یک واقعیت است که روش آموزش و پرورش ما که هرگز جالب نبوده، در مورد کودکانی که با زبانی غیر از فارسی چشم به جهان باز می کنند، دچار نقص و تبعیض، و روشی تحمیلی ست. اما این نقص بزرگ آموزشی را نباید به قصه های کودکان و نوجوانان کشانید و اذهان بی غل و غش آنان را به خصومت ها و موضع گیری های "قدرت" نزد بزرگ ترها، آلوده کرد. شایسته نیست در قصه های کودکان و نوجوانان، این "تفاوت"ها را بزرگ نمایی کرد و آنها را به "نبرد" و "مبارزه" و چه و چه تشویق و ترغیب کرد، و پاکیزگی ذهن روشن آنان را به "غرض"ها و "خصومت"های بزرگسالان آلود. هر انسان طی یک رشد طبیعی، به حقوق خود آگاه می شود و روش مبارزه برای احقاق حقوق پایمال شده اش را، به زعم خود می یابد. روش های هرکس، لزومن بهترین و کاراترین روش ها نیستند تا خود را محق بدانیم تا همان را به کودکان و نوجوانان "درس" بدهیم. این خود نوعی "تحمیل" است. به گمان من، اغلب آثار صمد بهرنگی، یا دست کم آنها که من خوانده ام و به یاد دارم، از این پند و اندرزهای مبارزه جویانه، و ترغیب و تشویق به حفظ تفاوت و غیره... خالی نیستند.

داستان كوتاهى با فضايى تاريك در مورد كودك شهرستانى آواره در تهران است كه به شترى عروسكى در پشت ويترين دل بسته و گويى تنها دليل دوام آوردنش در شهر بزرگ اما غمگين و بى رحم پايتخت همين عروسك هست كه در روياهاى هر روزه اش حضور دارد و اينكه شايد روزى موفق به تصاحبش شود....
داستان ظاهراً براى تهران گفته شده اما در حقيقت در مورد هر كلان شهرى در مقابل يك مهاجر شهرستانى بدون پول و مهارت مى تواند تا حدودى زيادى مصداق داشته باشد.

كودكي و فقر!
جزو ناراحت كننده ترين معضلات اجتماعي براي من.
تلخي خاصي داره داستان هاي صمد بهرنگي و به نظرم مثبت ترين نكته داستان هاش همين تلخي خاصِ كه هر خواننده و شنونده اي رو با تصويري از دنياي حقيقي آشنا ميكنه.

«خداخدا میکردم که دعوامان بشود. فحش تازهای یاد گرفته بودم و میخواستم هر جور شده، بیجا هم که شده، به یکی بدهم.»
این داستان اگرچه نه برای اولینبار، اما باز فکر مرا به موضوع طردشدگی طبقات فرودست از عموم اجتماع معطوف کرد. من بارها ابراز بیمحابای خشم ناشی از سرخوردگی و تحقیر در کودکان کار را در دیدهام، و از امروز آنها و آیندهی خودمان ترسیدهام. این قطعاً مختص کودکان نیست. یک بار در سکوی مترو نشسته بودم، قطاری که رسیده بود شلوغ بود، پس انتظار کشیدن برای قطار بعدی را به سر و کله زدن با جمعیت عصبی قطار فعلی ترجیح دادم. همین که درهای قطار بسته شد و شروع به حرکت کرد، مردی با کیسهای مشکی در دست با عجله رسید به سکو، و به قطاری که در فاصلهی نیممتری از جلوی رویش رد میشد، یک تف پُر و پیمان حواله کرد، و افتخارآمیز خندید.
صمد بهرنگی در مقدمهی داستان، چنین نوشته است:
«خوانندهی عزیز
قصهی «خوابوبیداری» را به خاطر این ننوشتهام که برای تو سرمشقی باشد. قصدم این است که بچههای هموطن خود را بهتر بشناسی و فکر کنی که چارهی درد آنها چیست؟»

تلخ .تلخ وتلخ..این داستان چطور میتونه برای یه کودک باشه ..نسبت به تمام قصه های کودک بسیار هنجار شکنه..
تو یه روز خاکستری توی مسیر کار این کتابو خوندم و نزدیک بود بزنم زیر گریه...جمله ی آخر داستان ضربه ی نهایی رو به احساسات مخاطب وارد میکنه ..دلم میخواست مسلسل پشت شیشه مال من باشد.
تصور این جمله از زبون یه کودک تلخ ترین تصور ممکنه.

This was a wonderful and powerful story for me on so many levels. I cried, smiled, laughed, and felt like I was part of the story while reading it. It is one I shall read again, because there are messages that go beyond a young boy and his imagination ... it puts us in a world where the struggles of children in 'developing' countries endure. However, (for me) this story represents the struggles children (and their parents) face in the 'developed' countries as well, and therefore it is a universal story that many can unfortunately relate to.

ميتونم بگم معركه بود. به صورت تلخى روايتى هست از زندگى افراد فقير و حتى بچه هاى كار و تفاوت اونها با بچه پولدار ها. داستان قلب يك بزرگ سال رو فشار ميده. شك دارم كه بچه ها با خوندنش متوجه چيزى بشن يا تغييرى كنن و يا تاثيرى بگيرن . مگر اينكه عقلشون خوب كار كنه و واقعن ببينين .

‘Awareness, wisdom and guidance arms them for the right reasons versus guns, violence and terrorism’
Samad Behrangi (June 24, 1939 - August 31, 1967) was an Iranian Azeri socialist and writer. He is famous for his book for children, ‘The Little Black Fish.’ Born in Tabriz, Behrangi started teaching in village schools in Iranian Azerbaijan in 1957 which he continued for eleven years. Apart from children's stories and poems, he wrote many pedigological essays and collected and published several samples of oral Azerbaijani literature. Behrangi's works for children and teens contain social themes of poverty and injustice, often with vague socialist or communist undertones, and are considered among the prominent works written for children in the Persian language in terms of structure and emotional impact. Some have criticized his alleged attempts to bias opinions of children towards socialist or communist ideas. Behrangi drowned in the Aras river and his death was blamed on the Pahlavi regime. His works have been banned in Iran.
The importance of Behrangi’s work to literature and the humanity causes he supported have been made more available to the Western world because of the excellent translations from the Persian to English by Ruby Eman. Her translation of the impressive book 24 HOURS BETWEEN DREAM & REALITY was created in 2008. In keeping with the mindset of the author, before the story begins he offers A message to the young readers - I did not write “24 Hours Between Dream & Reality” to give you an example to follow, my purpose is to show you the living conditions of many disadvantaged children all over the world, provide you with necessary tools to better understand their situations, enable you to look deeper into the causes of the hardships they endure and find solutions to those problems.’
Behrangi’s eloquent prose that opens this book is sampled here – ‘My story begins from the time I arrived in Tehran, the capital of Iran. I wish I could narrate all that happened during those months spent away from home and recount my experiences and valuable life lessons which would otherwise have taken years to accomplish, but that will be a very long story, needing several volumes and you might get tired of it. Therefore, I will only write about the events of the last 24 hours, which I am positive will be very interesting to read. Of course, I have to back up a little bit and start my story from the time my father and I decided to travel to Tehran. In our hometown, due to bad economic conditions, my father lost his job and was unemployed for several months. As he couldn’t find any work to do, no matter how hard he tried, he finally decided to leave my mother, my sister and my younger brothers back home and travel to Tehran; and as I was the eldest child he took me along with him. A couple of our relatives and other people from our hometown had done this before and had managed to find temporary jobs to earn a living. This motivated my father to make this important decision in hope of finding a job to earn some money in order to put food on the table.’
The book is short but pungent and is well condensed here – ‘The story is about devastating impact of unemployment on children. و سرنوشت محتوم جامعه ای را که نوار باریکی بین طبقات آنچنان گسستده کشیده باشد
پیش بینی کرد. قلم توانای بهرنگی در خلق موقعیت ها و جان بخشیدن به اشیا، داستانی چنین اجتماعی سیاسی را در ظرافتی در ابعاد ادبیات فولکلور میگنجاند.

«قصدم این است که بچههای هموطن خود را بهتر بشناسی و فکر کنی که چارهی درد آنها چیست؟»
یکی از بدوی ترین و در عین حال نادیده گرفته شده ترین چارههای این درد اینه که دو انسان بزرگسال در صورت نداشتن توانایی مالی برای حمایت کامل یک انسان دیگه، تولید مثل نکنن.
اما خب طنز ماجرا اونجاست که متاسفانه این چاره رو دقیقاً همون افرادی که باید توی زندگیشون اجرا کنن نادیده میگیرن!

سلام
موقعی که این کتاب را خواندم بسیار از آن خوشم آمد بعدا بار ها و بار ها آن را خواندم . ولی اینک بعد از 30 فکر می کنم . صمد بهرنگی با نشان دادن آن مسلسل پشت ویترین به بچه ها ندانسته چه ضربه ای به جنبش میهن مان زد !!!!!!

كلاس سوم راهنمايي بودم كه خواندمش.شايد به زعم ان روزهايم كتاب شاهكاري بود ولي امروز مي گويم شاهكار صمد بود كه اين كثافت هاي روزگار را با جسارت بزرگ در پيش چشمان مردم عريان مي ساخت

The story revolves around the last 24 hours of the childhood of Latif in the streets of Tehran, at the end of which he would be forced to make a brutal passage into adulthood. Latif is a peasant boy who was taken to the capital by his father. The father’s aim was to raise some money by selling vegetables for his family in the village, yet he is unable to earn enough even for the two of them; they are desperately destitute; they sleep on the handcarts with almost always empty stomach. Under these harsh conditions, Latif’s only consolation is his dreams of possessing a big toy camel that is displayed on the shop window of a toy store. He sees in his dream at night that the camel who can fly takes him to a banquet, at a villa of a rich man, which is occupied by the toys and the servants of the house. He tries futilely to satisfy his hunger until he realizes that it was just a dream.

كودكي و فقر! عجب بدبختى بزرگى!
بعضى وقت ها فكر ميكنم فقر رو كى ساخته، اگر خدا خالقه؟ يعني خالق فقر هم خداست؟ يا مثلا ما ساختيم و خدا داره نگاه ميكنه؟
دردنكاك ترين جاي قصه اينجاست كه كودك دركى از فقر نداره. سر شرايط كارم تا حالا بچه هاي زيادى رو ديدم كه به خاطر فقر زندگيشون از بين رفته، براي اين ها هم راه حلي هست؟،
