Kaylin McFarren has received more than 70 national literary awards, in addition to a prestigious RWA Golden Heart Award nomination for FLAHERTY'S CROSSING - a book she and her oldest daughter, New York Times/USA Today best-selling author Kristina McMorris, co-wrote in 2008. Prior to embarking on her writing journey and developing the popular THREADS psychological thriller series, she poured her passion for creativity into her work as the director of a fine art gallery in the Pearl District in Portland, Oregon; she also served as a governor-appointed member of the Oregon Arts Commission.

When she’s not traveling or spoiling her two pups and three grandsons, she enjoys giving back to her community through participation and support of various charitable, medical and educational organizations in the Pacific Northwest. Her award-winning time-travel adventure, HIGH FLYING, asks challenging questions that will linger long after the final twists are revealed. Jumping to the supernatural-horror genre, Kaylin's clever GEHENNA series takes readers into the pit of Hell, through the mechanisms of secret societies, and across the Earth’s crust, ever raising the stakes for this soulmate duo—a roguish, Nephilim creature and beautiful guardian angel presented with mind-boggling challenges.

With each story she writes, this author delivers unexpected twists and turns and keeps her readers on the edge of their seats, leaving them guessing and thoroughly entertained.

FUN TIDBITS

Kaylin is proud of the fact that her great aunt Bessie B. Cordell, an evangelistic missionary during WWII, was instrumental in opening an orphanage in Tientsin, China and also wrote two published novels, Precious Pearl and Blossoms of the Flowery Kingdom, documenting her dangerous, harrowing experiences.

She keeps a glass of wine close by while writing love scenes, Kleenex on her desk while writing heart breakers, and has been known to empty a box of chocolates when she's completely stumped.

A consummate "pantser" and perfectionist, she writes and edits as she goes, and uses photographs of models and actors from tabloid magazines to visualize her characters.

She loves her husband of 48 years dearly, however, if Josh Holloway, Hugh Jackman or Ian Somerhalder came knockin', well... their marriage just might be put to the test.

I'm so confused about this book. Initially, it starts off pretty strong. Chase and Rachel have a history together. It ends tragically with the death of her father, the circumstances of his death being a mystery. It's now four years later. Rachel has a new job, a new life. Then Chase comes back into town on his treasure hunting boat, chasing the same sunken treasure that her dad died trying to find.

Once the details were laid out and I thought I understood the plot, I started really getting in to the story. This author certainly seems to know a lot about scuba diving in deep water. I know absolutely nothing, so I'm not that great a judge, but the terminology and scene setup served to really set me in the middle of the ocean, diving for an ancient Chinese treasure. Not only is there the danger of equipment malfunction (which was awfully prevalent here, more so than usual, I hope) but also nasty gang leaders bent on murder and mayhem.

When the plot started to drag I kept expecting it to pick up. It really should have, as there was plenty of action and intrigue. I couldn't put my finger on why I kept wanting to put the book down. The romance was okay. Not extremely sexy but it was there. I just felt like I didn't really care about anyone. I never got to know anyone very well. Each time I thought I'd understand what the meaning of the book was, the bad guy would turn out to NOT actually be the bad guy. Someone would die, and the REAL bad guy would be revealed. But WAIT! There's this OTHER guy over here who also wants revenge/money/rape.

I think there were too many freaking subplots going on. I like plot twist, but the amount of different lives caught up with Rachel and Chase's fiasco was confusing. It got to the point that I would put the book down and when I picked it back up, I had no idea where I had left off. And I was pushing hard core to just get through it. Many, many people die, and I wasn't all to affected by any of the deaths. There are some moments that I think were supposed to tug on my heartstrings, but I was trying to play catch up to much to notice. Example: There is one scene in which Rachel goes to a hospital and suddenly is having a memory of coming to the hospital when her dad had his accident. There is no segueing to the 'here and now.' From one sentence to the next, she's in a memory and then she's not, and I didn't realize it until I had read two paragraphs. Paragraph breaks are good, mkay?

There is a paranormal element that for me was just a bit too cheesy, and another example of trying to put too much into one book. There was a LOT going on here, folks! As a little disclaimer, maybe I was distracted? It's always possible, but I think this story could have really benefited from having about ten less characters playing such prominent roles. I got very confused.

It was okay. The author had a good idea. Her main characters were likeable, and I would have loved them had they been fleshed out a little more.

My thanks to Creative Edge Publishing and Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Blurb:
“Believing herself responsible for her father’s fatal diving accident, Rachel Lyons has withdrawn from the world and assumed a safe position at a foundation office. When called upon by a museum director to assist her former love interest with the recovery of a cursed relic from a sunken Chinese merchant ship, she has no intention of co-operating – until her brother is kidnapped by a drug-dealing gangster. In order to save him and gain control over her life, Rachel must not only overcome her greatest fears, but also relive the circumstances that lead to her father’s death”

Summary:
Rachel Lyons lost her father Sam in a diving accident and the first chapter of this book serves as a prologue, providing the reader with a much needed backstory to both Sam Lyons’ demise and the ensuing adventure. We are also introduced to Chase Cohen, who features as our hero.

From the second chapter onwards, we are navigated back to the present where we find that Rachel, a former marine biologist, has totally withdrawn from the diving world and is now gainfully employed at The Warren Nash Foundation. Anything to do with diving troubles her, so it is with trepidation that we see her going to meet with Dr Ying, a Museum director and old friend of her father who has, after doing a large amount of research, requested a grant from the foundation to find the Wanli II – the Ming Dynasty Emperor’s lost dragon ship – the same ship that led to her father’s death. She soon realises she’s been manipulated when, after delivering the bad news of the unsuccessful grant to Professor Ying, Chase Cohen, the owner of Trident Adventures, makes his appearance at the meeting.

Chase brings back painful memories, memories which she has no desire to dissect. Having been in a relationship with him when her father died, she’s never forgiven him for the short scribbled note he left her before leaving town as well as the fact that he never attended her father’s funeral.

At first, Rachel refuses to be a part of the quest that Chase is on, but when her brother, Devon, is kidnapped by a drug-lord and his cohorts, she puts her carefully built-up life and financial prosperity on the line to save him.

For Rachel, this will be a voyage of re-discovery of the underwater world she left behind and possibly a chance at finally laying to rest some painful memories – for Chase, an opportunity for redemption.

My Thoughts:
I found this to be an action-packed, satisfying and informative read, with a lot of technical aspects relating to boats, underwater archaeology and scuba diving which makes me feel that Kaylin McFarren has done her research well. The characters are well-developed and the scorching chemistry between the two protagonists will leave you wanting to dive into the cool waters of the ocean. Ms McFarren has a way of allowing her reader to connect with the emotions of her characters, of which there are plenty, but perhaps the most constant of which are guilt and betrayal. Ms McFarren has done well with the easy way in which she keeps her reader involved, from her flowing dialogue to the remarkable way in which she makes use of sensory and external environmental descriptions. She quite capably managed to keep me turning the pages in anticipation of the outcome and, just when I thought I had the plot nailed, out rolled another surprise.

If you are looking for a fast-paced romantic suspense novel with dramatic adventure, action, intrigue and a hint of the paranormal all coming together to form the backbone of a story with multiple plot lines which intertwine and lead you to a very fulfilling conclusion, then “Severed Threads” is for you.

This is the first book in the “Threads” series by Kaylin McFarren and I thank both Creative Edge Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this great book.

A Bit about the Author (taken from her website):
Linda Yoshida, aka Kaylin McFarren, is a rare bird indeed. Not a migratory sort, she prefers to hug the West Coast and keep family within visiting range. Although she has virtually been around the world, she was born in California, relocated with her family to Washington and nested with her husband in Oregon. In addition to playing an active role in his business endeavours, she has been involved in all aspects of their three daughters’ lives – taxi duties, cheerleading coaching, script rehearsals and relationship counselling, to name but a few. Now she enjoys spending undisciplined time with her two young grandsons and hopes to have many more.

Kaylin is a member of RWA, Rose City Romance Writers and Willamette Writers. She received her AA in Literature at Highline Community College, which originally sparked her passion for writing. In her free time, she also enjoys giving back to the community through participation and support of various charitable and educational organisations in the Pacific Northwest.

A Fast-Moving, Plot-Twisting, Rollicking Gallop of a Romance

If you love lightning-fast action and high stakes romantic suspense, with an Indiana Jones-style treasure hunt adding an extra splash of adventure to the mix, Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren was written just for you. Set in the friendly oceanside town of San Palo, California, it’s the story of down-on-his-luck treasure hunter Chase Cohen and grant foundation executive Rachel Lyons—who represents Chase’s last chance for funding a hunt for sunken treasure from the Orient in the shark-infested waters of the California coast. Too bad for Chase that Rachel hasn’t forgiven him for walking out of her life four years ago—right after a diving mishap involving Chase took her father’s life.

To say these two have unfinished business is putting it mildly. Throw in their still-sizzling attraction, the loan sharks gunning for Rachel’s brother, a rival treasure hunter who torches Chase’s boat, and a cast of colorful secondary characters, and you’re in for one heck of a ride. Fans of the adrenaline-jolt action romance will want to check out this fast moving, plot twisting, rollicking gallop of a romance.

I was asked to read Severed Threads and give and honest review. The title is currently on Kindle Unlimited and with and Audible upgrade of $1.99, I jumped on it.

This is the first novel I’ve read/listened to by Kayline McFarren, and I just have to say is WOW! There was so much action at every turn I was on the edge of my seat! When I thought the story was going to go one way, NOPE, it redirected and completely went another. It was brilliantly fantastic! I loved everything about it; I am moving on to the next on ASAP. I just have to note that John Jaret as a narrator, superb. I kept thinking there had to be a female narrating Rachel Lyons character, no, just John.

Severed Threads is and incredibly fast paced treasure hunting adventure that will keep you on the edge of you seat from the first page. Throw in a little romance, drug dealers, ghosts, ship wreaks and a plot for revenge and it leaves you in a constant state of anticipation, waiting for the next chapter. I absolutely loved it and give Severed Threads 5 Boundless Stars....Sara

I won this book in a goodreads giveaway! :)

The whole time I was reading Severed Threads I was like ahhh 4 stars, no 5 stars, no 4 stars, no 5 stars! lol I HAD to give it 5 stars based soley on the fact that it was action packed, interesting, and unpredictable! I never knew what was going to happen next, which is awesome and hard to find sometimes.

There were only a couple (minor) things I didn't get and that was why would he not tell her about his kid, lol. I get why she didn't hear about his kid, since she became a shut in after her fathers death, but the kid was from a relationship before her(right?) so did he know about the kid while he was in his 2 yr relationship with Rachel? I didn't really follow that part. Also it did seem like there might have been too many subplots like another reviewer mentioned, the Tom Nash one was super random to me, but the other twists were amazing and kept me on my toes. I just love fast paced thrillers! I look forward to reading more of your work in the future!

"A romantic adventure set in the exciting world of salvage diving, treasure hunters, and modern-day pirates, Severed Threads is an action-packed, crowd-pleasing page-turner.

Four years ago, Rachel Lyons’ father died in a mysterious diving accident, ending her love affair with the sea, as well as her love for her current flame, Chase Cohen, who was there when Sam Lyons died. Chase disappeared from Rachel’s life shortly thereafter, with no explanation. Since then, she has buried herself in a new corporate job and new life devoid of treasure hunting.

However, things are starting to get complicated. Rachel’s brother is in deep trouble with some dangerous people, and one of her father’s close friends needs a priceless Chinese artifact to end a deadly curse. In order to save the ones she loves, Rachel must team up with Chase to find the Heart of the Dragon and other promised riches. Their shaky partnership is thrown off balance by secrets, hidden motives, and unmistakable romantic tension.

McFarren expertly blends Chase and Rachel’s personal story with an exciting treasure hunting narrative punctuated by detailed diving knowledge. One moment Chase and Rachel are fending off sharks and discovering ancient treasure; in the next, their sizzling chemistry lights the pages on fire.

The plot develops quickly, while action, intrigue, sensual romance, and surprising twists and turns abound. The author’s descriptions of an underwater world are vivid and breathtaking, and a supernatural edge colors the search for legendary treasure. The main characters, Chase and Rachel, are wonderfully flawed and are surrounded by interesting and well-developed secondary characters that add depth to the story.

Severed Threads is an exciting and engaging read, simply perfect for fans of romantic suspense."

Chase Cohen and Sam Lyons were diving together, searching for the elusive buried treasure that Sam had been chasing for years. He was so sure he would find the Chinese merchant ship, the Wanli II, that he had devoted his life to the task. But that day, tragedy struck and Sam drowned. Chase blamed himself, believing he hadn’t kept Sam safe, and Rachel, Sam’s daughter, was understandably devastated. Even though Chase and Rachel were an item, Chase believed she would blame him, so he decided to disappear….

Four years later, Rachel was working at The Warren Nash Foundation with an old friend of her father’s, Dr Ying. He was requesting a grant to continue searching for the Wanli II, for which Rachel had to do the research, approach the people to gain approval. When Chase Cohen appeared on the scene, supposedly in partnership with Dr Ying, and his dive company (which was in monetary straits) was the one Dr Ying wanted to use, Rachel wanted nothing to do with it. Though she still had feelings for him (but wouldn’t admit it to anyone, let alone herself) she didn’t trust him.

Suddenly Rachel found herself in danger…her brother Devon (who had always been the family black sheep) had disappeared….Rachel hadn’t recovered from her father’s death, and missed him daily. To have Chase back in her life didn’t sit well at all.

This adventure is filled with intrigue, mystery, danger and even murder and made this story incredibly gripping. The fast pace of the action kept me reading long into the night!

Highly recommended.

Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the story of Rachel Lyons, a young chairwoman of the San Palo Archaeological Museum. Four years prior her father, Sam Lyons, dies while on a California scuba diving expedition with his diving partner, and Rachel's boyfriend, Chase Cohen. Chase leaves and Rachel attempts to move on, until they are brought back together when Dr. Ying champions an archaeological expedition - one which would have its bounty named in honor of Rachel's father. As the salvage begins, hidden truths are uncovered, legacy and lore converge, and more than just treasure is discovered in the underwater belly of the earth's last frontier.

As a lover of the deep blue sea, sunken vessels, and all things oceanic, Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren ticked a huge number of boxes and opened the door to a world that is still vastly uncharted. Rachel and Chase are both excellently developed characters and the plot delivers an even better prize than I'd expected. This is a story of love, loss, and adventure. It is also a supernatural story of legend and fantasy, which I was not expecting at all. Together, the combination is a winner. McFarren is a skilled writer and the narrative is engrossing, the writing is tight, and all the loose ends tie up nicely (without a cliffhanger, which is a satisfying touch for the first book in a series). Fans of Severed Threads will be delighted to know that they don't have to wait for book two or three in the Threads series, as they are all available. And believe me, you'll want to keep on reading.

GAB I received a free paperback edition of this novel from Goodreads, Kaylin McFarren, and Creative Edge Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all, for sharing your hard work with me!

This was an interesting, fast read, and an enticing variation of California fiction, involving as it does maritime aspects of SOCA living. The relationships across the cast of characters was entertaining - just when you think you have it figured out you are proved wrong. At times the action becomes almost frantic, and everyone is wearing so many hats that it is wearying, but an entertaining read all the same.

Now she enjoys spending undisciplined time with her two young grandsons and hopes to have many more.

Although Kaylin wasn't born with a pen in hand like so many of her talented fellow authors, she has been actively involved in both business and personal writing projects for many years. As the director of a fine art gallery, she assisted in furthering the careers of numerous visual artists who under her guidance gained recognition through promotional opportunities and in national publications. Eager to spread her own creative wings, she has since steered her energy toward writing novels. As a result, she has earned more than a dozen literary awards and was a 2008 finalist in the prestigious RWA® Golden Heart contest.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

Kaylin sat before her computer writing FLAHERTY'S CROSSING as a source of personal therapy after losing her beloved father to colon cancer. You might say she was angry at him, at God, at the world in general. However, after writing this story, she had the opportunity to really look into her soul and consider the fact that so many other sons and daughters have had to deal with similar and even worse situations. Rather than a memoir, her novel evolved into a fictional journey which brought about the resolution she needed to find. She never expected this exercise in writing to go to press, touch lives, or win literary awards. But as a result of her good fortune, she has arranged for proceeds from the sale of this book to go directly to the Providence Medical Foundation's colon cancer research department in her father's name. She's now convinced and proudly shares her belief that good things can grow out of the worst times in our lives if you just take the time to open your heart.

My review:
This truly is an awesome book. I love the characters stories and what they bring to the book. I love the romance, sadness and drama. I love everything about this book. I truly hope that they come out with a second one to this book because omg is it freaking amazing. I so am not butterflying lying.

Severed Threads is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller with big storylines and many subplots. If you enjoy contemporary adventures with a little romance thrown in for good measure, Severed Threads could be the next novel to add to your to-read list.

The story begins with the death of Sam Lyons, a veteran salvage diver (think treasure hunter) under questionable circumstances. A routine reconnaissance excursion results in his unforeseen death which leaves lingering questions of fault and blame. Was it diver error? Did Sam uncharacteristically make a simple mistake? Or did his partner, Chase Cohen, fail to properly inspect their equipment before their dive?

Flashing forward several years, we meet his daughter Rachel Lyon and former dive buddy, Chase Cohen, who are still grappling with Sam's loss and feelings of guilt associated with his seemingly inexplicable accidental death. Essentially, neither can accept that Sam died while doing something he dearly loved and was clearly one of the best in his field. They know something's fishy regarding the circumstances around his death, but they have no evidence to come to any type of conclusion and resolve their grief.

Rachel and Chase were once an item, but Sam's death changed all that and their love literally became shipwrecked. They both bore the shame of blaming themselves and perhaps Rachel also felt Chase partially responsible as well. The questions surrounding Sam's death is the ultimate wedge between them.

Rachel copes by taking a desk job working for a foundation which funds the very types of explorations her father was known for and then acts as curator for the discovered artifacts. She finds herself thrown back into the family business when her ne'er-do-well brother, Devon, is taken hostage and held for ransom by an odd group of gangsters. She must help find and then steal an ancient artifact as payment for her brother’s release.

There's a lot going on in Severed Threads—almost too much with murders, gangsters, pirates, treasure hunting, an ancient Chinese curse, and even a paranormal connection between our protagonists and a deep sea ghost who lurks around the buried treasure of a sunken Chinese ship. On the other hand, you won't be bored because this story moves at light speed, and that is no easy feat given the many story lines the author had to juggle.

To McFarren's credit, she manages to bring it all together in the end. The author is a great writer and storyteller. Her passion rings through, but when there's so many characters to contend with, character development gets spread a little thin. The author does go a little overboard (pun intended). At times it was hard to keep track of everyone, but don't let this distract you from the flow of the story which is fast and adventurous.

If you keep your focus on Rachel and Chase's story, you'll find that Severed Threads offers a satisfying conclusion and that all secondary storylines are eventually resolved. McFarren also includes a setup for what appears to be the next installment in the exploits of Chase Cohen and Rachel Lyons and their treasure hunting excursions.

The story opens during a diving salvage operation with experienced divers and treasure hunters Sam Lyons and Chase Cohen. Though they’re working on the Griffith wreckage, Sam believes the site also contains the wreckage of none other than the Wanli II—the Ming Dynasty Emperor’s lost dragon ship containing an ancient figure head, a fierce dragon in gold leaf and preserved in resin for all posterity—the gift Mai Le intended for her lover.

Unexpectedly, however, things turn bad for Sam while he’s underwater: he suffers cardiac arrest for no apparent reason. Indeed, the circumstances surrounding his death appear more than a little mysterious.

Chase, who had loved him like a father, feels responsible and doesn’t know what to make of it. Did something malfunction or did something scare Sam down there? He'd been an experienced diver with over 20 years of experience under his belt. What had Chase missed? Sam was the only man Chase had allowed himself to trust. He and his daughter Rachel were the only two people he really cared for. But now all had changed: Sam was dead, and Rachel would forever blame him for his death.

Move four years forward. Rachel Lyons, Sam’s Daughter, is working at a grant foundation. All is pretty quiet and routine in her life…until she’s approached by a museum director asking for a grant to conduct another diving salvage operation, run by none other than Chase’s Trident Ventures.

Though Rachel has no intention of helping Chase, Chase is set on convincing her. Since the operation focuses on discovering the Wanli II, if they succeed, her father would receive his long overdue reward and the museum would fund a permanent exhibition to honor his memory.

Yet, Rachel is still hesitant. Then, a twist of fate puts Rachel's brother in danger, forcing her to change her mind about funding Chase's project. Chase is more than suspicious about her sudden change of heart, but he isn't about to say no to this opportunity which could help him leave his mark upon the world as a renowned treasure hunter.

Thus, she grants him the money and insists on joining the underwater expedition. Can she put aside pride and work with Chase on a daily basis?

Severed Threads is an engaging, entertaining read! I've always enjoyed stories about lost treasures and underwater archaeology and this one didn't disappoint. The hero and heroine are realistic and sympathetic and there's a sizzling chemistry between them. The plot is believable with a fair share of exciting twists and turns. I found the workings of a grant foundation and a diving salvage operation quite interesting and informative. Pacing is fairly quick with a nice balance of action, dialogue, description and the inner thoughts of the characters.

In short, Severed Threads is an exciting novel featuring danger in the high seas, romance, action and adventure, murder, and even a sprinkle of the paranormal for good measure. Recommended.

Severed Threads - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat; Think With Your Taste Buds; A Book and A Dish

"Somewhere on board the ship is the gift Mai Le intended for her lover. According to ancient scrolls handed down by my grandfather, it was hidden in a handcrafted box disguised as a Chinese betrothal chest. After a thorough examination of the wood fibers and inscribed markings, there is no doubt in my mind. The lid your father found belongs to this box. The heart of the dragon must be hidden in the wreckage or buried somewhere close by. Prophecy foretells of a lion rescuing the dragon's heart. This is your destiny, Rachel. Your chance to turn your father's dream into reality."

Dr. Lao Ying schedules a meeting with Rachel Lyons in the hope of recruiting funds for lost treasure from the Wanli II ship. This is the mission her father Sam and his partner Chase Cohen had embarked on years earlier. After examining the items found so far, Dr. Ying is sure the Wanli’s burial place has been found. But the lack of funding could bring this excavation to a stop, and this is where Dr. Ying hopes to solve the problem. With Rachel's influence at the foundation she works for, the real search can begin. However, Chase Cohen's involvement creates a roadblock in this enterprising venture.

Rachel and Chase were a couple who shared a deep passion for the sea. Then, when Rachel needed Chase the most, he ran off and she hasn't seen him for four long years...that is, not until her meeting with Dr. Ying. She wants nothing to do with him or anything he might be involved in. Her brother Devon warned her about Chase before he disappeared, and now she realizes she should have listened. But as it turns out, Devon isn’t the smartest person in her life. He’s neck deep in trouble with money laundering and may end up in the ocean as shark bait. Chase’s treasure-hunting skills and the Heart of the Dragon he’s after are the only means to saving Rachel's brother from some really bad men.

This book is full of twists and turns. I would find a character that I started liking only to discover my first impression was wrong. Then I would come across one I didn't trust and soon realize I would want them on my side, especially if I were put into some of the situations in which Rachel, Chase and Devon find themselves. Severed Threads is chuck full of murder, drugs, bad guys, and a whole lot of suspense all the way to the end. For anyone who enjoys undersea mysteries, thrillers and adventures, this is the book to read!

I really enjoyed this book; to me it has a little bit of everything for all readers. It has lies, deceit, romance, treasure hunting, fighting, and of course some good ole lovin hehe. I also have to say the author does an amazing job at capturing the reader’s attention from the very beginning and keeps it, which is very difficult, but she does it with ease by giving little hints into the mysteries of the novel, and not giving too much away at one time like I have experienced before with many writers. I will say some may not enjoy how the writer ends pretty much every chapter with a very small cliffhanger, making very difficult to stop reading. This book also gives the reader some back stories of legends that also are extremely entertaining and there is also a ghost element that I liked since it did not come off as being cheesy or too farfetched, but I do like the paranormal stuff so forewarning that there is this element since some may not like it.
Ratings wise I would give this 4 out of 5 stars..... Wait what? Didn't I just say I loved the book?!? Why only 4 stars?!? The reason for this is the one negative I have with this novel and that is the ending to me feels rushed and things not fully explained. Like there is a scene where you find out Rachel has a stalker, and that whole situation is ever fully explained, you find out that the dude is married but stalking her and doesn't want his wife to find out.... and this left me like "huh?". Then Allie's miraculous recovery goes unexplained, but the biggest is after the bog ending fight is weird and feels rushed and confusing. As well as I will say the "cliffhangers" I raved about so much at the beginning of the review does muddle some of the ending and does at first cause some confusion that can upset the reader, since you read Chase is pulled from the ocean and is alive, but then a few pages later the author confuses you when Rachel overhears by the police that another captain has been claimed. If the ending was developed more than this would definitely be a 5 out of 5.
Also this is volume 1, so there will (hopefully) be more coming in this series and in the epilogue it does end with the promise of a new exciting adventure, but also note that most things are explained and wrapped by to the point you could read this as a standalone novel, so for those not into series you can still enjoy this novel too.
I truly cannot wait to see what the next volumes bring and to see how each character develops, especially the rekindled romance between Chase and Rachel.

Who doesn't like a good mystery with a little sexual tension thrown in? That's why I picked up this book and I wasn't disappointed at all. This was a well written story of who done it and the main protagonists are a couple with a past who are thrown together out of necessity and in the process of solving the mystery they are drawn together once again.

Rachel Lyons is the daughter of a treasure hunter. Her father died doing what he loved most, searching for the ever elusive Heart of the Dragon. She blames herself for his death because of the harsh words they had before he left for his final dive. Shes plagued by nightmares and the ever destructive what if? She runs from her grief and hides away in the safe world of a museum foundation.

Chase Cohen is the owner of Trident Ventures, the company that has asked the foundation for funding to explore and bring up a Chinese merchant ship. Chase was Sams dive partner and Rachel's lover. He blames himself for Sams death and turns his back on Rachel and her family just when they need him most. She believes him to be a coward and a jerk, just like her brother warned.

Chase wants her to fund his search for the Wanli II, a Chinese ship that went down with a fortune in gold and the Heart of the Dragon, the wedding gift from a concubine of the emperor for the Spanish captain she loves. 400 years later Chase believes hes found the lost ship, the one that Sam died trying to find, the ship that's been part of Rachel's nightmares for years.

But they're not the only ones looking for the sunken treasure. Some very unsavory characters come into play and do everything they can to make sure that Chase and Rachel not only never find what they are seeking but that they don't live to tell the tale. Mob bosses, crooked cops, pirates and a creepy stalker come into play. Rachel has no intention of helping Chase in any way until her brother is kidnapped and the ransom is two million dollars. She becomes a reluctant partner in the search for the Wanli II.

The story is full of twists, turns, plot twists and surprises at every turn. You don't know who to trust and it takes you to the very end before you get your big Ah ha! moment. Its not perfect and there are a few places that leave you scratching your head and going what? but for the most part, this is a very well written story that keeps you guessing until the end.

Slip beneath the waves into Kaylin McFarren’s perilous new romance, ‘Severed Threads.’

In the classic dive novel, one of the main characters is after shipwrecks – or more accurately, sunken treasure: a very specific treasure. And treasure is most definitely at the heart of this one, but for far more reasons than money – this hunt is both close to the heart and quite possibly deadly.

At the start, we’re assured that handsome Chase Cohen can ‘remain focused on a purpose.’ In a way, he does, but his ‘purpose’ distracts him from immediate – and life threatening – situation. That error threatens his ruin in so many ways. So focused, yet easily distracted. We will discover this is consistent to his character.

Rachel – who when we first meet, seems not so much despondent as harsh and cold, is also deceptive. She’s burdened with guilt and stubbornly clinging to blame as well. However, the opening is so cleverly written, we as readers cannot help but sympathize with both the main characters, from the start.

Severed Threads connects on an emotional level almost immediately. The twists of the plot tangle one almost as quickly. Whatever treasure lies out there, it is luring more than just honorable salvage companies, and has interested more than pleasant little maritime museums.

Rachel is forced in a more active role …not because of some thought out plan, and not because she is finally swayed to a different point of view. No spoilers here! But the story takes a fast turn and suddenly Rachel is much more involved than she ever anticipated. We are clinging to the seats at this point, wondering if she’ll ever deduce what really happened… and if Chase’s undertaking will be the end of all of them. And Chase – true to form, almost misses the treasure, he’s so distracted by the moment.

Irregularly presented chapters from lesser characters interrupted the connection to the storyline in an annoying way – they furthered the story but seemed to bumble in, intrusively. The sizzle in this case was window-dressing.

Undoubtedly the high points of this story were: believable and interesting characters and the unpredictable story line.

“Severed Threads” by new author Kaylin McFarren definitely lives up to its “Romantic Suspense” genre listing. At two hundred and eighty-three pages it’s a fairly quick read and I found it to be interesting and well-written. I would also hazard a guess and say that McFarren holds some level of scuba certification as her underwater scenes are portrayed both accurately and knowledgeably.

As I began reading my copy of “Severed Threads” I was happy to find that the first chapter was an adventuresome “prequel” of sorts. Personally, I always enjoy when authors provide their readers with an earlier stage of the tale they are about to share.

In “Severed Threads” Rachel Lyons, the book’s main female character, lost her father Sam in a diving accident four years ago. It seems that she has never been able to completely close that chapter of her life and it doesn’t help that the coroner could never provide a specific reason for Sam’s untimely demise. Ultimately Rachel feels responsible for his death and, not knowing how to properly cope with his loss, she has removed herself from the beauty of the underwater world; settling instead for a desk job at a foundation office.

Unfortunately for Rachel, museum director Dr. Ying and…old friend of her father’s schedules a meeting with her to discuss his grant request; the grant request focused on finding the mythical Chinese merchant ship the Wanlii II; the same ship that cost her father his life. Needless to say Rachel wants nothing to do with this obviously cockamamie and crazy endeavor especially since there isn’t any hard proof to substantiate the wreck’s supposed final resting place. During Rachel’s logical attempt to explain this to Dr. Ying she is stopped short when Chase Cohen, her old boyfriend and the man who was her father’s dive buddy that fateful day four years ago, walks through the door. What follows is an intriguing tale of mystery, deception and murder...

In summary, “Severed Threads” was a well-written compilation of convoluted plots, intrigue, and paranormal; I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys any of the above genres.

This book is about a woman trying to save her family and learning to forgive her father that died searching for his dream. In present day she is faced with terror and villains that have caused many twists and turns in her journey along with a former love that was there when her dad died.

The cover art grabbed at me from the second I saw it. It was very fitting for throughout the story. This story has everything that a person would want. There is lots of action, pirates, kidnappings and love stories that stand the test of time and oodles and oodles more.
The characters were very easy to get to know. It flowed from one event to another seamlessly. This is definitely a book geared toward adults due to the graphic sexual content in places and usage of some swearwords though. Had that not been in it, I feel it would have made a great young adult to adult book that both boys and girls would like with all the adventure and action.

The usage of history and details that were researched were written in very well and made the story flow instead of stall. The elements of fear that the characters faced, although were there and added to the story, were toned down so that they would not cause nightmares in the readers. It also sets up for a continuing story if the author chooses to do so.

I put books into four categories like most other readers I think do.

1) Keepers- These are ones that I will go back and read again and again like Nora Roberts “McGregagor's”. because they are like old friends.
2) Library/Thrift store donations- These are books that I liked to read once but they were not keepers.
3) Chuckers/Fire starters- These are books that after the third chapter if I was not into the story they got chucked into the fire bin. I have only found about 5 of these in my whole 30 years of reading , not counting what I had to read in school.
4) Sharers- Share with others about it because it was a great read.

This one was a strong #4. It had a great story plot that I know many friends of mine would love to read and enjoy it. I could see reading it to my kids as a night time story only I would edit out the sex scenes. It is a great stormy night read!

The underwater world, a fascinating realm separate from planting your feet firmly on dry land. There are lots of history that have been washed away, untold stories that have found their new home with the sea creatures, and unreachable treasure forfeited by sunken vessels, until now. Learning all there is to know about generations and centuries of events that happened before out time is available to us, but only if we’re willing to deep sea dive for it. The story starts off as a normal salvage tale, of collecting lost treasures from the sea to be shared with the rest of the world in public displays at museums to an adventure full of unexpected twists.

In “Severed Threads,” author Kaylin McFarren shares a typical story of a treasure hunter named Chase, who lost his best friends that he saw as a future father-in-law and the love of his life, Rachel, losing her father. It’s very touching to be a witness as to how this adventure unravels with Chase’s unforgiving action of leaving Rachel when she needed him the most. Then to only discover there were some untold truths lying beneath the surface that would involve a team, “all hands on deck” uncovering treasure from Japanese myths to only be more than just a figment of one’s imagination. But more than just the team discovered about what lies underwater and realistic pirates, or criminals had an agenda to do whatever it’ll take to have their share at the fortune. The uncertainty of these lives was unsure as they dealt with many bumps along the way putting every single person involved in harm’s way.

Nothing leaves an amazing imprint than the feeling of an ending that not only is positive but leaves room for more possibilities. Based on how this book ended allowed some closure about the status for each character with the opportunity to continue witnessing more adventures with Chase and Rachel. I truly enjoyed reading this book, it has invoked good emotions along with a mix of others, rightfully so and look forward to reading the rest of the series. I recommend anyone to join in on the journey of discovery as the adventure and twists are just only beginning to scratch the surface.

If you haven’t already heard me say it before, I love, love suspense books that keep me guessing – and in the new book “Severed Threads” by author Kaylin McFarren, you will find just that!

The first chapter of the book gives you a very good back-story so you learn more about what shaped the meat of the book. I always appreciate when an author does this because it helps get me more interested from the beginning.

The book revolves around Rachel Lyons who lost her father 4 years previous in a diving accident and the cause of his death was never confirmed. In some ways she feels responsible for his death and has sunken into a life where she has alienated everyone. In addition, she left her job as a marine biologist and has taken a desk job for a foundation office.

When the story begins, the director of a museum, Dr Ying, comes to speak with Rachel about a grant request. His grant request has to do with finding a Chinese merchant ship which is said to be cursed. This is the same ship her father was looking for when he died, so she wants nothing to do with it and tries explaining that to Dr Ying.

Enter Chase Cohen, the man that was with her dad the day he died – he also happens to be Rachels old boyfriend. It seems he would also like something from that ship – but does he have good or bad intentions?

In the process, Rachels brother is kidnapped by a mobster, and she is forced to try to steal an artifact from the ship in order to save him. Does she try to save her estranged brother, does she try to help her old boyfriend, or are any of them worth re-living what happened to her father 4 years ago?

I found this book to be chock full of suspense, twist and turns – with the reader never quite knowing who was the good guy, and who was the bad.

Highly recommend!

“When true love’s found, death has no end; focus on now, worry about tomorrow later.”

Indiana Jones, get outta town because Chase Cohen is here!
Chase Cohen is a marine archeologist with an eye for unusual, nose for the extraordinary, and an ass that is sure to find trouble. Four years earlier, while searching for the sunken dunk, Wanli II, dating from the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), off the coast of the United States by San Palo, California, his best friend, mentor, and father of his girlfriend dies. Although the incident is ruled accidental, it changes Chase’s life and alienates Rachel Lyons from his life. When evidence about the Wanli II’s existence resurfaces, Chase is again attracted to the spot. In need of funds to carry out the salvage operation, through the San Palo Archaeological Museum, he applies for support. In turn, the museum contacts The Warren Nash Foundation for funding. The cinnamon red haired Rachel is the field agent for the foundation. Through an unexpected twist of fates, the onetime lovers are once again thrown together.

This is a high-octane suspense thriller that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. With underwater action to rival Clive Cussler, suspense and action that equals James Patterson, and erotica and passion for matching Paullina Simons, this book has pretty much everything. The mystery meanders through a labyrinth of characters that keep the reader guessing.
This is my introduction to Kaylin McFarren and, to say the least, I’m impressed. This may sound like tumescence praise, but reading is believing. I think many readers will agree with me.

Severed Threads by Kaylin McFarren is the story of Rachel Lyons - her dead father and Chase Cohen. The book opens with Rachel and Chase each trying to deal with the blame they feel for Rachel's father's death. McFarren details the events leading to Sam's death and then fast forwards you to 4 years later. There we find Rachel and Chase back in each other's company, but under very different circumstances. Needless to say there is a lot of water under the bridge between the two of them. Rachel absolutely wants nothing to do with Chase and Chase wants to rekindle the relationship for the sake of finding the treasure that Sam had been searching for. Chase and Dr. Ying (Museum Director) want a relic recovered from the Chinese merchant ship.

Rachel's brother is kidnapped and she is desperate to save him - therein lies a problem. She must steal the relic from Chase in order to save her brother from the underworld gangsters that have him. Will she betray Chase to save her brother? Not only is Rachel dealing with the reappearance of Chase in her life, a kidnapped brother, but also the very realization that she will have to relive her father's death. Rachel has basically shut those memories out of her life--can she stand to have all of it dredged up.

McFarren has done a masterful job of writing Severed Threads with an abundance of suspense, romance and history. The story catches you immediately and you are a rapt reader to the very end.

Great Read - You will enjoy!!!!!

Our protagonist and treasure hunter Chase Cohen is having a run of bad luck. Treasure is not forthcoming, bills coming due, competitors out to destroy him, and to top it off his love life is in the proverbial head. Chase is on the trail of a sunken Chinese merchant ship containing a large amount of gold treasure and a priceless bobble known as the Heart of the Dragon. The artifact will end a deadly curse for Chase’s professor friend and the treasure will put Chase back on top of the game. While financing is being sought, Chase is reunited with his old flame Rachel Lyons; sort of. Their relationship ended four years ago when Rachel’s father Sam Lyons died in a mysterious diving accident while partnered with Chase. Rachel was devastated, lost all desire for diving and the sea, and Chase in unbearable guilt disappeared from view. The chance meeting did not go well; go figure. Our unhappy couple, being thrown together due to the mission, spends the rest of the book trying to make amends and determining whether there is any trust left. It’s the classic tale of love lost and rekindled. The full story is definitely complex. There are many additional sub-plots and plot twists as the treasure hunt progresses. Perhaps too many varied characters with an interest in what Chase and company are up to. I did enjoy the story though. The characters are well developed, there is plenty of action and suspense, and the narration is exceptional. My oh my this book was good...not just good but read in 1 sitting good. I was unable to read in one sitting (toddlers just don't understand) however I was able to finish this book in 1 day. Ahh the writing, the story, the characters, the setting. The everything!

I fell in love with this book. It was relatable on different levels for different reasons. I almost didn't read this book because of the opening. Sam our leading lady Rachel's father dies suddenly and mysteriously from cardiac arrest. My mom passed early in February of this year from sudden cardiac arrest in front of me.

I wanted to quit then but I knew if this author could draw emotion from me and realistically portray ones emotions as an adult child losing their parent I should at least give the book a shot. I felt so many emotions from page 1.

All of them beautiful and heartbreaking and adrenaline fueling exactly like this book. I can tell you already I'm looking forward to what come next for Rachel and Chase...perhaps there might be more in store for Devon or Ian?

I wish I could go more into the actual story itself but I fear I would give away far to many spoilers and I hate when people do that. All I can say is I cannot recommend this book highly enough to express how truly amazing it is. With so many twists and turns you'll believe you know what's going on and then feel like you've been knocked on your bum when you find out the truth.

An adventure story with everything you could ask for. A story of buried treasure with a curse over it, gangsters who want their stolen money back, a salvage operator on the brink of bankruptcy and the beautiful heroine who wants to find the treasure to honor her dead father.

This book had me hooked from the first page, with the descriptive texts of each individual along with why they want to find the treasure for their own needs but how this is affected by outside factors and their reactions to this, really gets the reader involved. The writing is first class and very clever and along with the short chapters makes this book very enjoyable and easy to follow, although you may find it very difficult to put down so be warned.

The fast paced story line follows the characters facing their problems and how, in order to achieve their goals, have to learn to trust each other but with the past history of the two main characters that is more difficult that they can imagine.

The writing makes a refreshing change to read a story that isn't the normal run of the mill and it is obvious that the author has put a lot of imaginative thought into the work as you read your way through.

Anyone who likes adventure, mystery and intrigue will love this book and I will certainly be looking out for future work by this author.

The first book in the Threads series, Severed Threads introduces us to unlucky Chase Cohen, a salvager who spends his time underwater treasure hunting, and Rachel Lyons, the daughter of a salvager who is determined not to rekindle a relationship with Chase, as she holds him responsible for her father’s untimely death. However, when Rachel is forced to help her brother get out of the clutches of criminals, she and Chase team up to find fabled treasure Heart of the Dragon, hidden somewhere in the wreck of the Wan Li, a legendary Chinese ghost ship, and a gamble as to whether it actually exists or not.

In Severed Threads, author Kaylin McFarren does an excellent job of setting up a back story both of the fabled treasure ship and its supposed curse of Mae Li, the unrequited mistress of a sea captain, as well as the spark between Rachel and Chase. She weaves in many secondary characters well, but the focus of the story is clearly how they find each other despite obstacles. I love the character development, particularly as it relates and sets up the next book, Buried Threads, which brings them even further into Asian tales and culture, inspired by McFarren’s knowledge of Asian art and antiques. I think this will be a well-written series where it is easy to lose yourself in the descriptive tales of antiquity and modernity.
