Traces the life of the mother of modern nursing, describes what medicine was like in the early 1800s, and recounts how Florence Nightingale improved the medical care of soldiers during the Crimean War
Faithful Friend: The Story of Florence Nightingale is a very good book and it expresses what a young lady had to go through. There was a time in life where it was a struggle and Florence showed that there can be something good out of something bad, just depending on how you look at things. Florence was expressing her emotions very well of telling her story. This book tells her story with expressions where it can almost be there with her. I recommend this book for classrooms, it will help students be in the time frame with her and also help them realize what people had to go through then.
This book really lets you see Florence Nightingale as a real person, not simply the saintly "lady with a lamp." While I can respect her dissatisfaction with the options available to women of her time and her passion for the profession she created, at the same time, she seems to have been a difficult person to get along with.
Interesting autobiography of Florence portraying her life, as a woman and a leader in the 1800's. This shows the conflicts she's faced going against her family's wishes and gives a glimpse of life in this time dealing with transportation, communication, and most importantly medically.
Great young adult read! Felt the author's bias a little; but whet my interest enough to consider more research of Nightingale, the Crimean War, and the emergence of medicine through the Victorian Era.
