Emmanuel Guibert has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series and The Professor’s Daughter with Joann Sfar.
In 1994, a chance encounter with an American World War II veteran named Alan Cope marked the beginning of a deep friendship and the birth of a great biographical epic.
Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, translated around the world and soon to come from First Second books, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980’s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter, the late Didier Lefèvre.
Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.
The illustrations are pretty cute, but I didn't feel satisfied with most of the stories. I didn't really relate to the situations, and they felt a bit drawn out.
Ariol is the best! Every little story brings me back to my school days. There are a few stories here that have beautiful moments between Ariol and his parents. "Raboul Passed By" is such a perfect tiny instance, I can't imagine that it didn't happen to Guibert in real life. And I am always jealous of how effortless Marc Boutavant's animals look. They fit amazingly well into this world parents and kids are so lucky to take a glimpse into.
well, i learned that you can draw faces of people that look really like with only numbers. i find that ariol books are really funny. even if i have not read them all and i have only read four. obviously my favorite character is ariol. it's hard to summarize because it is more than one story. i want to read more of these!
Another Ariol! Yeah! Always a pure delight. Just good, clean, elementary school fun. A lot of the usual, Ariol in love with Petula, Bizbillah in love with Ariol, and Thunderhorse antics. The book ends with a longer connected story though as they go to a fair, have fun on the river and Ariol gets sick for Petula's party. Kids of all ages will love Ariol.
Asher (1oyo) read. "Ariol and Ramono are at it again! Ramono gets a new skateboard and can't wait to try it out. Ariol gets stuck in a jacket. Ariol's dad helps Ariol to like asparagus with Thunder Horse!"
