Dirge for a Necromancer

The Magician Raettonus has been agonizing over the death of his master, Sir Slade, for centuries, studying necromancy in the hopes of bringing him to life once more. Soon after Raettonus arrives at a key defensive citadel to tutor the general's sons, the trickster god Kimohr Raulinn comes to him, promising to bring Slade back to life. Raettonus is all too eager to make the deal. But where Kimohr Raulinn goes, suffering follows. The citadel falls under siege by foreign forces, and matters look increasingly grim for the small force of defenders. The god of death is rallying his army of steel-toothed warriors to come reclaim the resurrected knight, and deals made with devils are always poisonous...

The magician Raetonnus moves through a bleak landscape peopled by the creatures of mythology. Hired by a centaur general to educate the General's crippled and sickly sons, Raetonnus interacts with centaurs, goblins and his boon companion, a chatty winged unicorn, with varying degrees of contempt. The balance between his day to day snarkiness and his occasional acts of grace are one of the most entertaining things about the book.
Raetonnus aim - to reanimate his much loved mentor, Sir Slade - can only be achieved by entering into a pact with the most dangerous and capricious of the gods. But gods demand payment and their prices can be high.
This lengthy first novel is a good examination of what happens to a gifted and attractive young man who is cursed with both overwhelming magical power AND immortality but deprived of the guidance of the only person he loves.
