When housemaid Martha began an affair with her Master's son, Lucien, the future Earl of Marchwood, it was always destined to end badly. Single, pregnant and unemployed, Martha struggles to forge a new life for herself and her daughter, only for Lucien to inadvertently destroy it. She and her daughter are homeless and starving when they come to the aid of a man who proves to be their salvation. Lucien is still obsessed with his lost love, the only woman who has ever rejected him. A chance meeting seven years later could spell disaster but can they put their pain and pride behind them and seize this opportunity, or will old ghosts ruin their last chance at happiness?
The best way to describe this Victorian saga is that it is a cross between A Woman of Substance, with Pride and Prejudice. It tells the story of an earl's son and the housemaid who ends up pregnant by him. Her life is one major rollercoaster of disaster being followed by amazing good luck , followed by more disaster and so on . Sometimes the writing style was a bit too simplistic, skirting over some very serious subjects but the general storyline kept me interested.
This was a well written book. I enjoyed reading about Martha's struggles and her growth. Also Lucien's coming of age and his growth. I will not tell you the story because y don't want to spoil it for you. This is a wonderful story, and I was glad to see that bedroom antics were kept to a minimum. So since I don't like writing book reports I will close.
Overall, it's a nice reading. great storyline. AHowever, i feel like running a marathon. Too much going on in so few pages. It seemed I was reading ABOUT a story than reading THE story.
