"Hilah, I made the Chorizo in your Breakfast Taco book and the flavor is spot on. It’s great, You have the flavor without the grease. Thank you very much, I don’t have to cook the grease out of chorizo before I use in a recipe anymore." - Bob
"Thank you so much for a wonderful book! I love cookbooks that are more than just recipes. I’d have gladly paid to get it. I’m really looking forward to using it (especially the chorizo recipe) once I get the kitchen in my new apartment in order." - Randy
"I had a brunch for 30 the other day and made your breakfast tacos and avocado salsa and people (after the confusion that they weren’t eating breakfast burritos) went nuts over them. AND I have so many leftover tortillas, I can have breakfast tacos for the rest of the year. hollah!" - AC
"This is exactly the book I needed. I’ve been away from home for a while…about 2 years in NY from San Antonio…and it’s lonely without some of my favorite tex-mex. I made frito pie the other day and my boyfriend was amazed at the idea of putting chili on top of chips. Thanks for the breakfast taco cook book! I love me some chorizo!" - Katherine
"We finally had breakfast tacos for the first time this morning, and OMG! SO good! Even my 2 year old had no trouble stuffing his face with the eggy, sausagey, salsa-verde-y, potatoey goodness, and my partner went back for seconds!" - Gill
What a fun read. Not overly technical, not overly comprehensive, but fun and informative.
I was introduced to breakfast tacos when I lived in San Antonio. I went away (to the DC area), and never found a good one there. I was able to make them, though - and a friend clued me in to the fact they freeze well. I started making a dozen or so at a time, rolling 2 at a time into an aluminum foil sheet, and freezing them. Spouse (and I) could pop them into the microwave and have a delicious morning breakfast.
This book covers all you need to know. I haven't specifically tried the recipes, but they look right. Great reminder.
Five Musketeers of Breakfast Tacos: (eggs, potatoes, bacon, beans, chorizo. Also can add nopalitos and migas) (loc 175) -"So pick two or three of the Five Musketeers, put them in a tortilla, add some cheese and salsa, sit back, and enjoy, knowing the love of a good taco is right there with you." -Scrambled eggs, "home fries" (Pryz's "breakfast potatoes"), bacon, refried beans, homemade chorizo (1 pound finely ground pork • 2 ancho chiles • 1 large garlic clove • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar • 1/4 teaspoon each of ground coriander and cumin • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano), nopalitos (cut up cactus pads)
I have a lot of cookbooks both actual and e, well over 100 I'd say. It's rare that I read one cover to cover though, as I did with this. Coming from Australia and having never visited Mexico or the US my experience with Mexican cuisine is relatively limited. This book provides a solid foundation on breakfast tacos and salsas right down to a couple of easy flour and corn tortilla recipes. Now if only I could buy me some masa in Japan... The links to video tutorials and other stuff online already seem to be out of date. I think a YouTube search should find most of Hilah's recipe vids though. Her style of writing is highly engaging and funny. Certainly worth the $2.99 I paid for this on Amazon.
My family loves tortillas with everything. I've even had to come up with a sweeter flavor for their Dessert Tacos, so this book is a perfect fit for my home. There are quite a few recipes that I hadn't even thought of yet (LOL). And, some great seasoning ideas as well.
My only disappointment is that she uses all store bought tortillas and has no recipe for homemade tortillas at all! Oh well, ya can't always have everything and this book does well using any tortilla you want to use, so don't let that stop you from purchasing it.
There's not a lot to this little book, though it covers the basics and has good instructions, including links to little how-to videos. While I am a long-time lover of breakfast burritos, I am open (sorry about the pun) to being swayed toward breakfast tacos. I appreciate the info on how to mix up our own chorizo (sausage) and introducing us to "miga". We'll definitely try those and the salsa recipes, too.
The writing was amusing. On a practical level there wasn't much though. I thought the author was packing stuff in to make the book longer. I didn't think the other food reviewers added anything to what the author said. The last guy's comments were over the top and made the book end with a wimper and a sigh. Otherwise, subtract the other critics reviews, and the book would have been light but great.
Book did not disappoint and I will look for other books by this author. It was a great read and a fun journey in making the perfect breakfast taco. There are nice pictures of most of the recipes and there are many video links where Hilah demonstrates how to prepare that recipe. Watch the video on how to properly scramble an egg - my family noticed the difference immediately.
This book offers some light reading on everything you'd want to know about breakfast tacos, and how some Texans passionately defend the difference between a breakfast taco and a breakfast burrito..
Some very doable recipes are included to complete the breakfast taco experience..
Very funny book with good recipes. Although I'll overlook that she uses jalapeños instead of Serranos in her pico de gallo. Also has a nice romp of the good places in Austin to eat tacos.
