The Rules of Being a Proper Lady 1) Never take steps greater than six inches apart. 2) Never look boldly at a gentleman. 3) And never, ever, kiss a man who is not your fiancé.
But beautiful, bold Viola Carlyle doesn't care about the rules. And she desperately wants to kiss the notoriously tempting Captain Jin Seton, the man who brought her kicking and fighting back to English society. Kidnapped as a child, now she longs to return to that life of freedom where she was able to live—and love—as she wished.
Having hunted Viola for two years, Jin Seton has finally found his good luck—for, by finding Viola, his oldest, deepest debt will at last be paid. And although he has vowed not to let her win his heart, this very improper lady might finally be the one who tames him.

Geeez this book has been a chore. I contemplated giving up at 25% but thought that was too soon. At 50% I thought about it again and by 75%, but it was too late to give up. Torture to get through. Annoying heroine!! And the hero does an about face and wants to be with the heroine in the final pages of the book after he has pushed her away for the entirety.
Ok, ok, I give up. UNCLE! >.< There is nothing that bothers me more than wasting my time trying to read a book where it's literally a chore to get through one page. This was that unsuccessful for me. I tried and tried again but nothing was clicking. Honestly had I known the heroine was a privateer shipmaster who reads bed time stories to her crew of sailors and has them sing to her I would have skipped this in a hot second. It's just not my cuppa at all. It's so unrealistic and way too gimmicky. The tomboy aspect that I was looking forward to didn't exactly play out like I was expecting. And the heroine's hang up on her girlhood crush was too mind numbingly frustrating and uninteresting. For someone so smart and "experienced" she had tstl moments. How many times does the girl 'see stars' from seeing the hero smile? <__<
The hero Jin Seton was a standout and I tried to keep going for him but the slow-as-shit dull pacing and obscure writing worked against him unfortunately. If I'm not sure about a book I usually wait it out till the first intimate scene to make my decision and that cinched it for me here. The world building the author tries to create is......*hiccupy* for the lack of a better term. Things are not clear enough and described inconsistently and that's a big deal breaker for me, especially if the story is on shaky ground. She names parts of the ship and uses sailor? terminology like the reader is supposed to know what she is referencing to. Therefore you have no idea how and where on the ship characters are moving about. Because of this everything comes off flat, hazzy and not well explained. When I can't tell who is on top and who is on bottom during a sex scene and what surface they are going at it on (the stairs of the ship....I think?) then that's a big problem. She goes from being on top to later being described as being underneath him. >.< Annoying as all hell.
So sorry Jin, it wasn't you. I'm giving an extra star just for him. And I still couldn't figure out if he is Egyptian or not. This character's origins is still unclear to me since everyone referred to him as 'The Pharaoh' pirate. But his parents were English and American? *shrugs* So what was with the moniker? No clue. Like I said, things are too blurry.
Katharine Ashe continues the story she began in Captured by a Rogue Lord and we finally hear about what became of Serena's lost sister Viola.
Jinan Seton was once saved by the Earl of Savege from childhood slavery. Ever since that time, he has been looking for a way to repay the debt. When the earl marries Serena, Jinan sees a way to pay the debt--he will find Serena's lost sister and bring her home.
Jinan spends the next few years seeking her out, not realizing that he would find a woman who is his match in every way.
Viola has been living on the high seas since the age of 9 when her father returned to claim her. She now is one of the rare women who captains a ship and cannot see her life as anything else.
The two meet face-to-face when Viola sinks Jinan's ship. Not an auspicious beginning, but definitely a scene with a lot of sparks. Viola has always been a strong woman, but being with the cool, private, sharply intelligent Jinan brings out the devil in her and gives her doubts about who she is truly meant to be. For Jinan, while he rebels against the feeling, recognizes that in Viola, he has a soul mate.
This story takes place on the high seas, at the Savege estate, and even briefly in London. We see Viola struggle to balance being a lady with being an adventurous sea captain. And we finally see her recognize that her true home is with Jin.
Jin has a dark history and is not even certain who his parents are. He does not feel that he is worthy of Viola and there were several times I was groaning in frustration at his stubbornness. For being so attuned to Viola, he was obtuse to the most important fact--Viola did not care one whit about Jin's past and truly wanted him for who he was.
This book was angsty, breathtaking, and fully engrossing. The chemistry between Jin and Viola flew off the pages and I loved seeing two independent, immovable people be brought to their knees by love. This was a good one, guys :)
This latest chapter in the Falcon Club series was great. I really thought the story of Jin Seaton and Viola Carlyle were totally exceptional. The storyline was very believable and refreshing. It seemed to me that fate had entwined two people who needed each other. If you know the story, Viola was taken at the age of ten by a man who was her father. Fionn Dally was a smuggler who had an affair with Maria Harrell thus Viola was born. But Maria married Charles Carlyle, a Baron. Even though Fionn wanted his lover back, she wouldn't go because she already had a family with her Baron. The family thought Viola was dead, but her sister Serena never believed that her little sister was gone but kidnapped. Enter Jin Seaton a Captain of his own vessel who wanted to pay a debt of honor to Serena's husband who saved him when he was just a boy. So Jin decides to search for the missing sister and return her to her family in England. When Jin finally meets the lost sister, she is a Captain of her own crew who happened to sink his ship. Boy, do sparks fly between both of them. One angry man meets his match with one devil of a woman. Thanks Ms Ashe for writing another great story.
I'd give this 4.5 rounded down to 4. I've been a tougher grader lately, rounding down instead of up.
It was good! I don't quite recall a lot of it even after I started re-reading, must have been YEARS since I first read it, but it kept a smile on my lips most of the time, so I did enjoy it this time around.
I don't usually like books about pirates, so this is where 0.5 stars might come off, but the interaction between H/h was so good, that I really didn't mind. In fact, I prob enjoyed the parts where the MCs were at sea on the h's ship more than the other parts of the story.
In fact, the rounding down 1 star is bc of the later parts of the book when the h is finally home. I honestly didn't care for the reunion with her family much since she and Jinan were mostly apart during that time. I like the parts best when they're together, battling wills and egging each other on.
The h was at her best as captain of her ship, once she lost that role after returning to her family, her character dimmed. The H was best also on her ship, as her lieutenant. Their back and forth and the dare between them was the best part of the story.
I didn't enjoy the bits about the h and her long-time beau (whom she was more than just "flirtatious" with as in most of these historical roms), I didn't like that even after she and H were "intimate" she was still struggling with what to do with her beau.
I like the H a lot. Such a strong, unique character. He's perfect for the h, esp. on her ship. Even from a "subordinate" position, he still came off so strong and commanding, that you just had to swoon at his feet.
Overall, enjoyable read! Recommend to anyone who likes reading about pirate romances!
"He had finally found the quarry he had chosen for himself two years earlier. Another lost soul. A woman gone for so long that she no longer knew she was lost." Viola Carlyle or as she is better known these days as Violet la Vile runs a tight ship. Captaining her own ship has afforded her an opportunity most proper young ladies will never have. Living most of her life on the high seas, Violet has experienced many freedoms, but this life thrust upon her is not without its hardships. However, Violet doesn't allow herself to dwell too long on what once was or what could have been. Her plan is simply to marry the man who had captured her attention from a young and impressionable age, settle on his plantation, and live the rest of her life letting those who knew Viola believe her dead. But the one known as the “Pharaoh” has other ideas, the least of which brings out a very unladylike desire in her.
Jinan Seaton is a legend among sailors and gentlemen alike. While Jin could live the rest of his days as a gentleman of leisure, he has chosen the life of a hunter. Sailing from one port to the next in search of clues to the whereabouts of a missing possibly dead lady of noble birth. How fortuitous for Jin that the hunter is caught by his quarry, but what he finds is most astonishing and her story even more impressive. Buried beneath the mouth of a sailor with a captains command and the clothing of a man is a lady in need of direction. To repay his debt he needs her cooperation, but he underestimates her charms and finds himself in need of direction in navigating his heart.
Jin and Viola each readily admit that he's no gentleman and she's no lady. Their personal stories have seen to that and shaped the people they are when we meet them. Arrogant, stubborn, brave, and determined. Their relationship develops in much the same way as their attitudes, but with an underlying vulnerability that easily connects the reader to their individual plights. As they are both extremely conflicted and lonely, they easily seek comfort with each other. It is during those moments of comfort that the author delivers steamy, bodice-ripping action for us to enjoy. I also very much appreciated the author giving the reader equal parts Viola the privateer and Viola the slightly rough-around-the-edges lady.
From prologue to epilogue the story held me rapt with it's smooth pace and humorous undertones. The bantering dialogue is wonderfully written and even as I didn't know the meaning of all the terms used it still felt authentic to the characters and time period. Just as well the visual aspect of the story plays just like a movie with it's descriptive appeal and satisfying end. Historical romance readers will have fun with this read.
Jinan Seton has finally found his quarry after searching for her for two years, but she isn't at all what he expected, Miss Viola Carlyle a gently raised lady has become Violet La Vile, a well known sea captain with a careful of loyal men. Getting her back the beautiful captain back to her family may be trickier then he imagined, especially when she doesn't want to go so they embark on an unusual wager, if she can make him fall in love with her in two weeks she gets his new ship if; however, she fails, she must accompany him home
This is my first Katharine Ashe book and although on average I found I enjoyed it, there were some things about this book that I really liked and things about it that I really didn't.
To start on a positive note what I did like was the strong female character, Viola was tough and not afraid of going after what she wanted, something that you don't always find in historical novels. Unusually it w the male character, the hero Jin, that I found I had little patience for. One of my pet peeves is characters that avoid their hero or heroine when they feel they don't deserve them, when clearly that isn't the case, if only some of the genuinely assholey heroes thought like that I would be happy, alas they never do. Jin was one of those I-am-such-a-bad-man-I-don't-deserve-her heroes. This just unnecessarily stretched the story on and on and I was beginning to get bored and just wanted them to sail away in to their happily ever after.
However, what really kept my interest and will propel me quite happily to the next book in the series, is a series of letters between Lady Justice, a heretofore unknown lady journalist and Peregrine, the leader of the secret Falcon club who work for the crown finding lost people, and the organisation that Jin belongs to. They mock and tease and flirt with one another, whilst Lady Justice threatens to bring the organisation down by revealing its members. I can't wait o find out the identity of Lady Justice and can't wait to see her confront Peregrine.
In general a good book, the romance was passionate and there some aspects of this that I really enjoyed and will tempt me to read the next in the series.
I picked this up randomly because someone at the library had put it on hold and I thought it looked interesting. The cover and title are a bit deceptive - this is basically a pirate romance (though technically nobody's a pirate) and half of it takes place at sea. The main character doesn't learn "how to be a proper lady" until at least 2/3 of the way through the book. But it's good fun, and lots of angst and sexual tension and humor, and actually has recurring themes and motifs like some kind of LITERARY BOOK or something.
One thing that bugged me though--there's a LOT of sex in this book, but unless I missed it, there's no mention of birth control. Since one of the themes is that both Viola and Jin were the products of extra-marital affairs with forbidden lovers, you'd think the subject would come up.
Googled: pelisse, divan, short hair 1818, balayage, Jinan name meaning
I enjoyed this story about two people who were only on the fringes of nobility. Violet was kidnapped by her biological father at a young age, taken from her adoptive father's estate and away from her mother and sister. All presumed her dead but her sister, who continued to look. Violet's father was a sailor, so she grew to be one as well, eventually becoming captain of her own vessel once he died. Violet's sister's husband wanted only her happiness. Knowing this Jin, a former pirate, spends two years hunting Violet down. He feels he owes her sister's husband his life and wishes to repay the debt.
It was fun watching Violet and Jin interact on board her vessel. We don't often see heroines of authority in Regency romances. But it made for a great love story.
Stars: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hot: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Wonderful: 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Viola Carlyle and Captain Jin Seton 🖤🥰🖤 Esse casal é incrível.. They never thought they would find love... I love this book.. The End... Good Reading... 🖤🎀
This book was a solid 3.5, but I'll give it four stars on GoodReads. It wasn't badly written or boring, it was entertaining and well written. I enjoyed the characters, and for the most part, I enjoyed the storyline. I think the characters just needed a little bit more development. They seemed to make decisions by the seat of their pants, their emotions were too quick to fire and I did find Viola and Jin to be very annoying at times.
I had admired that the author tried to write about a strong woman that lived in the early 1800's... but as soon as she started to lose her steam, to lose her authority, and started to appear incompetent to Jin, I found that the whole thing lost its appeal. She should have been harder, stricter and more confident. Her past also presented a few contradictions that I found confusing at times. I also had a hard time believing how Jin learned to be so direct and composed, act as a gentleman, based on his past, and the author never explained how he learned what he knew.
I really really liked the letters between Lady Justice and Peregrine though. When I read the invoice of all the fish that Peregrine had sent Justice in response to the mermaid, I laughed out loud for a long time. Their report was greatly entertaining!
4.5/5⭐️ Loved both Jin and Viola **mmm thpicy**… these pirates made my toes curl. A case of the “you won’t ever find someone as perfect as her for you, you idiot” *pronounce it “idioyot” like Hermione Granger would*
The plot twist was not really twisty, but I wasn’t reading this book for the twist was I? First half of the book was much more sensational for me.
** Spoiler**
MMC is tormented by momy issues, well justified imo. He also didnt win the “Wager” fair and square..but where’s the fun in that? I didn’t enjoy the bit where Viola decided she wanted to learn the etiquettes of Being a Lady .. possibly because I believed her worth more than all of the ladies of the ton already *tips hat*
Mientras tanto algunos rellenos me desquician.

4.5 Stars. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I continue to be impressed with Katharine Ashe's writing style. In this book her ability to write humor shines through with the clever dialogue between the H and h. I must stop writing and read the next one in the series..immediately.
Jinan Seton - famed former pirate named The Pharoah - stood on the deck of his enemy ship and watched as his prized ship - The Cavalier - go up in flames and sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
The enemy that sunk his ship? Violet Daly. The one woman he has been searching for for 2 years. His mission is to find her and return her to London, her rightful home. With her return to London his debt will be paid. What he didn't bargain for is that she will turn out to be a hardened potty mouthed sailor. A sailor with her own ship and a legion of men at her command. A sailor whose beautiful curves would tempt even the saints.
But first and foremost she is a lady. Lady viola Carlyle. And he would stop at nothing and give up everything just to repay his debt.
I love love love 💘 this story. Its so peculiar. I thought it would have been mostly a Regency romance with lords, ladies, balls, and the ton but nope. This is a seafaring novel. Love is sweeter when its on the high seas.
Viola / violet is a hardened sailor. She is no lady. She has her own ship, cuss and dress like a sailor, has calluses on her palm. She is a strong, resilient woman. Jin is a former pirate turned privateer. Pirate always heats up my blood. He is ruthless, arrogant, bold. The chemistry between him and viola is combustible. The two of them tear up the sheets!! 🔥🔥🔥
Their love story is 👌. Laced with angst, sorrow, confusion, lust, love....
From Boston to the west indies to London, this author encompass it all. The secondary characters Billy, matouba, Mattie I love all of them. Also the main characters from the other novels in the series all made an appearance. I especially love the letters between peregrine and Lady justice.
The sex is off the charts. Ample intimacy and stolen moments.
I wish I can rate it more than ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Thats how much I enjoyed it.
Another member of the Falcons Club finds true love. This time it’s Jin’s story. To repay his debt to his friend Alex, the former dread pirate Redstone aka Earl of Seuvage, Jin plays a hunch and goes in search of Alex’s new wife’s missing sister, Lady Viola. Violet was taken by her natural father at the age of nine and raised as a member of his crew. As an adult she is the captain over own ship operating out of Boston. Truthfully, what’s not to love about a woman who can captain her own ship? Jin and Viola make an attractive and compelling couple.
Viola and Jin are complicated characters. These seem to be the author’s specialty—multi-faceted, strong personalities who hate to admit that they’re completely in love. It makes for a very entertaining and enjoyable, if sometimes tearful, (and frustrating) read. Her secondary characters are always well-developed, I love the recurring characters (I do recommend reading them in order), and her writing flows wonderfully. There are plenty of funny moments as well. Recommended.
Loved the unusual characters and setting and idea....it was a fun romp. Kinda hated the title and the 'boring old England' turn it takes after such high seas adventures. For all intents and purposes the American female sea captain takes 300 pages to get to England where she becomes a real English lady in the space of an 80's romcom montage. A lot of hype for little plot gain. But aside from that - and therefore the title - the actual story was great. Somewhat enemies-to-lovers, very broken main characters, a hugely compelling hero.
It was fine. I didn't really like the female lead, I feel like she annoyed me. But it was a while ago. The male lead was ok...I guess. The others in the series are much better, and I basically only finished it because if I'm into a series, I'm gonna read the whole thing, in case the characters show up again. I wanna read them in order, so I know the background, if that makes sense. So all in all, it was okay, but it was probably my least favorite in the series.
Difficult book, with difficult H and h. And truly, I’m annoyed to find the sister and bil of our h are from a book in another series by the author. I really don’t want to read another series of hers, I find this Falcons club too annoying . Unfortunately, I also am greatly intrigued by the couple in the next book, dammit. Both the H and h did entirely too much thinking and not enough talking, often a problem in these books. However, I did like them both, and was happy to read the HEA.
