Moomin Comic Strip #26-29

Moomin: The Complete Lars Jansson Comic Strip, Vol. 07

Rate this book
RETURN TO MOOMIN VALLEY IN THE SEVENTH VOLUME OF THE CLASSIC COMIC BY LARS JANSSON

In this volume of the Complete Lars Jansson comic, Jansson’s work, already quite polished, takes on a joie de vivre heretofore unseen. The Moomins rebel once more against hibernation, receive an inheritance they’re unprepared for, find colonization a bit of a bore, and decide once and for all that seashells are much prettier than gold nuggets. With familiar jabs aimed at Moomin leg length and somewhat less familiar ones aimed at capitalism and colonial politics, Jansson’s comics are timeless treasures for the whole family

The first story focuses on Moomin, who reads about a new continent and decides to colonize it with his family.

The second story is about Moomin, who falls in love with a girl named Tuttla and joins the boy scouts to impress her.

In the third story, Moomin's family inherits a farm from a distant relative.

And in the fourth and final story, Moominpapa finds a map to a treasure and accidentally puts the entire Moominvalley into a gold rush.

Personally, I thought all of the stories were quite adorable and lovely. The second one was a little weird because Moomin literally tried to manipulate Tuttla into dating him in the weirdest, shadiest ways possible, but it was still pretty light-hearted and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

More Moomin madness! I thought this one was especially good-- Moomin becomes a boy scout, and Lars Jansson delightfully satirizes political institutions and colonization. My favorite!

There are four extended narratives of around 80 frames each here, which I guess would have run for about three months each in 1961. The first is "Moomin the Colonist", a story of colonialism which would have been inspired by the winds of change; the Moomins settle a new continent and come into conflict with their neighbours (who are in fact their old neighbours from Moominland, also attempting colonisation) - the indigenous inhabitants are barely seen. The other three, "Moomin and the Scouts", "Moomin and the Farm" and "Moomin and the Goldfields" are all faintly surreal but not all that adventurous.

I bought this collection when I went to the Adventures in Moominland exhibition in January, and am actually a bit miffed - I should have spotted that it is not by Tove Jansson but by her brother Lars, and on checking inside it turns out to be the seventh of ten (so far) collections of the Evening News comic strips about the Moomins, of which only the first four contain Tove Jansson material. Next time I have a chance I shall try and get one of the earlier volumes.

Perhaps, one of the favourite books from this series?
I admire the daring move of Lars to tackle these globe-trotting themes (new continent's discovery, gold rush,...) yet staying humorous and charming as usual in his storytelling. 'Moomin and the Scouts' is my best-loved story, it's funny to see Moomin fall head over heels over another girl while Snorkmaiden had to win him back (she is now my beloved character besides Moominmama :) ).

Snorkmaiden: So you really don't want the pill?
Moomin: No..I just want to be alone.
Snorkmaiden: How strange he is... If he were I, I'd know he'd have fallen in love, but who'd he fall in love with? Particularly when he has me

I just love love how confident Snorkmaiden is, no over-sentimentally despair for heartbreak.

Uhm both the colonist plot and the scouts plot made me feel a bit uncomfortable- but the farm and the goldfield were great. Especially when snorkmaiden dances for the prospectors.

Not as good as the first Lars strips, but still very amusing and occasionally laugh out loud funny.

Not my favourite in this series of comics but thought Moomin the Colonist was funny and not what I expected.

I love the satire and I have always adored the art style. I would have been so excited to see this strip published in newspapers.
