This was one of the most fun reading experiences I have ever had, because Sabrina (my blogging partner) chose to read her German copy and I read the translated-to-English copy. It was entertaining to discover how certain topics were translated and how they compared. Surprising to me was the complete accuracy within the English copy, which garners some praise.

Before I get too far ahead of myself, let me give you some insight into what this novel is about:

Although Für jede Lösung ein Problem is a German book, this novel was translated into English in 2013: For Every Solution, A Problem. Please check out the English review of my blogging partner Ashley here.

For those who only looked at the book synopsis you may think this would be your typical chick lit style novel. You would be wrong. This novel written by Kerstin Gier is more like a black comedy chick lit novel.

The main character in this novel, Gerri, is single and writes for a popular romantic German series. However, she is constantly being forced to lie about what she does due to her parents being ashamed of her career and her singleness. Also when she compares herself to her friends and siste

Original review on my blog

From the synopsis, I expected a bit more depression drama than there really was in the book. I wasn’t necessary disappointed by the lack of depressive talk, more surprised. I would expect that if life before trying to commit suicide was hell, life after definitely wouldn’t be any better. Yet somehow (and it makes sense) it is.

I quite enjoy Gier’s writing. It’s easy to follow, simple and funny. Even something like suicide can somehow be turned into something funny. Min

I don't do a good reads review for every book I read but I make the exception for this one. I love the idea of this story, imagine writing a personal and harshly honest letter to the people in your life planning to kill yourself, then you don't die. You then have to face each of these people and make some sort of amends or burn the bridge completely. This is the English version of a German book, beyond the sporadic German references and the obviously German names there isn't anything that would ...more

3 1/2 stars!

This is my first audiobook completely listened at in German. I understood most of it (or so I believe). I'll have to read it in English too, just to make sure I did understand it correctly.

I told my coworkers, "I just read a comedy about suicide," and now they think I'm nuts. But this is hilarious! I had to keep reminding myself that this is set in Germany because the feel of it is very much New jersey. It makes me wonder how much I missed out on when I lived in Germany back in the 80s because I couldn't speak the language. These people could be my family.

The only problem I had with it was I wanted the main character to stand up to her overbearing family more, but that's a small t

So - this is a different kind of genre for Kerstin Gier - suicide!

We get to know Gerri - short for Gerda because she was supposed to be a boy named Gerd. Gerri is in the process in writing her "goodbye-letters" to those she feels she needs to speak her last words: her mother she was never able to make it right for, her very best friend, who indeed was a great friend and Gerri tells her how much she's appreciated this friendship; a letter as well for the new editor at the publishing house she wor

The lead character can't catch a break in this book, when her well planned suicide attempt gets bungled by a past-love who has HIS best interests at heart. All of her friends and family included in the letters of truth she sends out prior to her suicide are a hoot, but I wanted to smack the hell out of her mother! C'mon, Ma! Wake up! Your daughter tried to off herself for crying out loud! How about a little empathy and less focus on her husbandless status, hmmm? The book was originally by a Germ ...more

Fazit: sehr empfehlenswert!
