In 1788, Lenobia's father places her on a ship bound for New Orleans. An evil bishop, skilled in Dark magic, makes the same journey. His appetite for beautiful young women forces Lenobia to remain hidden, but she secretly visits the ship's stables, where a handsome young man and his horses capture her attention. Can they make it to the New World before the bishop discovers her true identity and a powerful evil breaks loose? And will Lenobia follow her heart, even if it puts lives at risk?

Lenobia's life before she becomes a riding instructor at the House of Night.
Lenobia was a bastard child and became one of the ‘fille a la casquette’-known historically as casket girl, i.e. women brought from France to the French colonies of Louisiana to marry.
Her heartbreaking forbitten love story with Martin, a creole young man who marked her life is also told.
I loved it!

This was a hard read for me, particularly since historical fiction just isn’t my cup of tea. But I am very fond of the series and look forward to rereading the series and the final books in the series I missed

I love this novella! Perhaps because it hit a very personal note for me. My family immigrated from France in 1820 to start a plantation in Louisiana not too far from New Orleans. I could hear so much of my grandfather in Martin and found myself reading his parts with a creole accent. It was marvelous!

On top of that I grew up around horses and a few months ago was helping care for a black Percheron gelding. He was so gorgeous and unbelievably sweet. At 18 1/2 hands he towered over me and could easily have over powered me but he only ever nuzzled me and lipped at my hair and clothes he he felt he wasn't getting the attention he deserved. LOL

Oh and did I mention I'm Catholic and went to Catholic school, as well? LOL I could see so many of the nuns who helped nurture my mind and soul in Sister Marie Madeleine.

The bishop made me cringe but I loved that two people still so completely human could see that evil. I know that Martin will come back to Lenobia and fully believe Travis will be his reincarnation. Have faith, Lenobia!

I have been counting the days until LENOBIA’S VOW would be released because she is one of my favourite characters in the HOUSE OF NIGHT series. There hasn’t been much information or background about Lenobia within the series and I felt that she had the most to reveal but I could be wrong, but there’s a saying in my family that sometimes what happens in the past helps shape you as a person.

One of the things I love about the novellas is the illustrations which happen to depict one of the keys emotions or scenes within in that particular chapter. For me it adds more to the emotional side of the story and sometimes word can’t express as much but as many people say “pictures say a 1000words”, with that I have to agree. Lenobia’s story begins in small southern country and ends in stunning New Orleans. After reading DESTINED I have a better understanding why she reacted the way she did within the 9th book of the series. I have a strong feeling that readers should read DESTINED before they sink their teeth into this breath taking second novella.

As a fan of the series I have developed a deep love for the series and the characters and sometimes there a few that I’m able to connect more with and have a need to know their back story so I can better understand them and the choices they have made to get this point in their lives. DRAGON’S OATH was a story of love and loss, but sometimes I feel that as reader I didn’t get a better understanding of him, but after reading DESTINED some things came to light, we saw the old Dragon before his beloved was taken from him, but with LENOBIA’S VOW I feel that I know how a lot better and can’t wait to learn more.

The novella has a bitter sweet ending for me, she is finally marked and protected from the Bishop but it seems to have come with a price that she would rather give her life for than see the person she loves sacrifice his to protect her. I had tissues piling up at the end and I know that you will not be disappointed. It’s a love story with a lot of twists and turns but also has evil (which explains her aversion to Neferet when her darkness is revealed) mixed with a healthy dose of sadness.

I’m hoping that the next instalment NEFERET’S CURSE will hold some interesting facts about who she is and how she becomes that way. I for one am not a fan of hers but there is always something interesting about her that draws you into her world even if you’re looking forward to her downfall.

This is kind of a disappointment. It’s cool to know Lenobia’s backstory, but the main series makes her vow seem really important and deep and it’s like... a promise made to a boy she loved after a month travelling to America. I thought it would be deep, but it just lacked that depth. That being said, I did really like Martin and the Sister. I thought they were pretty good characters.

House of Night Novellas:
Dragon's Oath: ★★★★☆
Lenobia's Vow: ★★★★★

Oh, this was beautiful and absolutely heartbreaking. Lenobia is my favourite adult in the House of Night world, and I loved her romantic plotline and characteristics in later books as she was developed, so I was definitely eager to *finally* get into the groove and read her prequel novella Lenobia's Vow. Much like with Dragon's Oath we are given a window into the inner workings of Lenobia's heart and soul.

It was completely necessary and offers a heck of an emotional punch. Lenobia's Vow was always destined to be my favourites of the novellas because Lenobia is my favourite. Even further, I'd been itching to know more about her true-love's past life and ached to know the origins of how they came to be and how he, tragically, passed on too soon. What we knew of their past relationship was fairly simple: a ship was born on a literal ship.

As always, the relationship is rooted in complexities. Unlike Dragon's Oath, the majority of Lenobia's Vow takes place before she is marked. (Dragon's story begins with him as a young human, but quickly shifts into him being marked as fledgling.) I think this makes the story itself all the more impactful and we come to understand the tragedy of how she lost her only love. It also is quick to remind us of the fragility of life; it begins with the death of Lenobia's half sister and, sadly, concludes with the death of the only man she'd ever love.

Another thing that makes Lenobia's Vow so intriguing and indulgent (for me) is the fact that it takes place, primarily, on a voyage. I think that, outside of Outlander and Passenger , I so rarely read books that take place upon a ship and the journey that follows. It's easy to see how connection of all kinds could be formed on such a trip. It also adds that extra layer of suspense--being in close confinements to not only your beloved, but another who serves as the central villain and the biggest threat--which is absolutely a plus.

Ultimately, Lenobia's Vow proves to be an enthralling and romantic journey. Not only does it add some insight on one of our beloved professor's early years, it makes her future all the more impressive.

Lenobias Vorgeschichte.

A Voyage to Change Her Life
Lenobia’s Vow
Rating: 5/5

Summary: This is the story of Lenobia’s journey to the New World and how she was marked. As the bastard daughter of a noble, Lenobia has worked her whole life, but when her half-sister, who looks remarkably similar to her, dies Lenobia takes her place and sets sail for the New World. The voyage there is rife with danger as a sinister Bishop is accompanying the Mademoiselles. Luckily, Lenobia finds solace in to gray Percheron horses and their caregiver, Martin.

I love Lenobia, ever since she entered the scene in the main HoN series, she was my favorite professor. There’s just something about her that I loved. Reading this only cemented that more. Lenobia’s just plain fricking awesome and now I know how she became that way.

Her backstory was really good and I honestly didn’t know much about her except that her lover had died in a terrible fire. The moment the Bishop stepped on the page I knew two things: 1- I hated him & 2- He had been involved with the death of her lover. Bishop Charles is an ass and there’s really no other of putting it. But Martin, and Sister Marie Madeleine tempered this with their pure awesomeness. Sister Marie is so fricking great, she was not afraid of anyone and she was determined to help Lenobia, which made me love her. Protect my precious cinnamon roll! And Martin, mmmhm delicious. That’s all I’m going to say on that matter.

The plot was interesting enough to hold my interest and I did read it in one sitting. I think if this had been expanded into a full length novel it wouldn’t have been as interesting. We know that Lenobia’s past haunts her in HoN and this perfectly showed us how. Beautifully written and illustrated, definitely read this novella!

The book is really nice and quite good to read on it's own withouthaving to much knowledge of the House of Nights book, though of course it is an addition to those books. It is great to get some background information about Lenobia, now I love her character even more. It's sad that the novella is not that long, but what has been written was good, interesting story and the drawings in the book were beautiful as well!

I loved this. I knew going into it from reading the house of night books that it would be heart breaking and it was. But it was also so sweet, I wish they could have experienced more together but I love Martin. And Travis in the House of Night series, I REALLY wish they would have done a Novella about them and the reconnecting!

Klappentext

Bewertung

2.5 This has been the closest to 3 stars I have gotten so far with this series, but seeing as it's a novella, it was a bit rushed. I would have liked the story to be more fleshed out . I am also biased since Lenobia is my favorite character.

Sobbing throughout.

I actually like Lenobia more than most of the main characters. She's incredibly strong and I loved reading about what made her that way.

This review was originally published on Blogs of a Bookaholic.

An uninspiring combination of bad accents and one-dimensional characters.
My biggest complaint about the first novella Dragon’s Oath was the writing, and I have to say, I think this improved in Lenobia’s Vow. The number of exclamation points were toned down, there were less adverbs and everything in general seemed more polished. Some of the issues remained (the bland feel, the awkward dialogue) and the writing still pales in comparison to the average author, but it was a positive step in the right direction.

Having said that, Lenobia’s Vow did present with some new writing related issues – accents. The story had several French characters and because of this the authors tried to incorporate a few French words and phrases which I found frustrating. I have to admit that this technique in books annoys me and I don’t have a lot of tolerance for it. Why? Because it means the authors just have to explain what the foreign phrase means in the next sentence (in this case, with no subtlety whatsoever). The technique is difficult to pull off well, and in Lenobia’s Vow it failed majorly for me. It was clear the authors didn’t know what they were talking about because they used the same 3 or 4 phrases over and over. Equally, when the characters were speaking English, I found the accents unbelievable.

The plot of this novella revolves around a young French girl named Lenobia who is instructed by her mother to impersonate another girl to improve her chances in life. She boards a ship bound for New Orleans and the majority of the story takes place below deck. Overall, it was pretty lackluster. Essentially Lenobia grooms horses and falls in love with a cute guy, and the conflict in the story comes from an ever watchful sleazy priest (with an ability to control fire) who likes young girls and will do anything to get them, and hey, if it’s against their will then that’s a bonus! Blugh. I read the story over two days; it was easy reading and passed the time well enough but I never became invested in what was going on and found my attention drifting. I didn’t think the story structure worked as well as Dragon’s Oath, instead of going full circle the plot was linear and the vampire and House of Night elements only became relevant in the last 20 pages, it wasn’t as satisfying. I also felt the novella didn’t add anything new. Having recently read Destined, I already had a good idea of Lenobia’s back story, and I don’t feel this novella added any more depth. The whole thing seemed unnecessarily.

As for the characters? Bland. All bland. Lenobia was a boring, painfully innocent and uninspiring character. Lenobia’s love interest Martin was equally blah and uninteresting. Plus, his broken English usage made him sound really dumb and he tended to reuse the same repetitive phrases (although he was supposed to have a creole accent and to be fair, I don’t know what that sounds like). Add the two together and what to you get? BOREDOM AND ANNOYANCE. Let me make this clear, I do not care about Lenobia and her muscly stable boy. It was like a walking Mills & Boon cliché but without the sexy times, and where’s the fun in that? I found myself uninterested in their star-crossed relationship and how it ended up which meant the book was, essentially, pointless.
The secondary characters were also one-dimensional and clichéd, there was a nun who was ‘good’ and purely a plot device and a creepy priest who was ‘bad’ because he just wanted to set fire to ALL THE THINGS. (Not that we’re ever told how he came to have this magical gift.)

Positives? I can’t really think of any which is a bit worrying. Lenobia’s Vow definitely wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever read but I was left with a resounding ‘meh’ and it didn’t enrich my life in any way. Overall I’d recommend giving it a miss (unless like me you have a compulsive need to finish every damn book in the House of Night series).

Unlike the last short story I read set in this world, this book does not strike me as entirely pointless. Lenobia isn’t dead, she’s a semi-important character and this story is useful. After all, a plot point in the main series is that Neferet has introduced a horse-loving human (that sounded wrong, especially in a series with the shagging of evil bulls) in order to get under Lenobia’s skin, especially since she has sworn an oat never to love a human again.

That begs several questions! That needs expanding and explaining! That can give us a great insight into Lenobia’s past and the no-doubt epic circumstances that have shaped her and caused her to swear such an epic vow that is causing her so much trouble to this day…

…except it kind of undermines all of that.

Because the whole set up made me picture Lenobia having an epic, tragic, terrible love affair. Perhaps she loved someone over years of great passion but, alas, the aging of the vampire inevitably took him away from her. Or the prejudice of the mortal world wouldn’t let them be together. Some epic reason why she had lost all faith in humanity as potential love interests – either human society or human frailty has convinced her that this would never be possible.

Which turns out not to be true at all! Instead it turns out that she fell in love with someone after knowing them for a few weeks (no more than 6, in fact considerably less) when she was 19 and then they died due to magical means. And she hasn’t sworn her oath because she thinks love between a human and a vampire is impossible – but because she is FAITHFUL to this dead man.

The man in question was a mixed race Black man (referred to as “mulatto” and “quadroon” in this book due to the era) who was convinced there love could never be because of racism. Lenobia continually dismissed this (which came across as a complete inability to listen to the world he was describing) and to try and convince him she decided to epicly declare she would love him or no other man! (So he better run away with her or she would be lonely forever – which, by the way, is coercive and gross).

I started reading this novella this afternoon, and as soon as I started, I was hooked. Actually, I was so caught up in Lenobia's story that I read it in a handful of hours.

It's 1788 and Lenobia is the bastard daughter of a baron--as people like to remind her. When an odd opportunity arises, her mother ships her off to New Orleans, by pretending she's someone else. Lenobia doesn't want to leave her mother behind, but when she reaches the ship that will take her to the New World, she starts to feel hopeful. Until she spots an evil bishop who's had his eye on her for several years.

She manages to avoid him for weeks, by pretending she's feeling too seasick to leave her shared quarters, while the nun the group of girls are travelling with takes care of her. One morning, unable to stand being cooped up so much, she decides to walk through the ship while everyone's still asleep and ends up in the cargo hold, where there are two beautiful horses. This is also where she meets the alluring Martin, and their interactions develop into something forbidden. Especially since the bishop is determined to get his hands on her, and refuses to give up the notion of making Lenobia his...

Lenobia's Vow is a lovely and very emotional story of love and hope. It's a coming of age story about a girl who wants to become a strong woman in a time where the odds are stacked against her. It's also a tragic love story. First, the sacrifice of her mother encouraging her to leave, and then with what she shares with Martin. It's also a terrifying tale of an evil bishop's manipulation, violence, and dark magic to get what he wants.

I absolutely adored this novella. It's beautifully tragic, and a wonderful addition to the House of Night series.

do every novella end tragically? it happened with dragon's and now lenobia's? someone needs to have their happy ending. lenobia's one of the better teachers that i liked in the house of night series, especially because of how supportive she was towards zoey.

in the novella, it's about lenobia falling in love and experiencing losses in various ways. she was brave and courageous even while she had to endure eight weeks of sea travel with a pervert bishop. i think the characters were okay. i wasn't super invested in what was happening but i did like lenobia, martin and the sister. just couldn't fully connect with them.

books in the series:
1. dragon’s oath: ✰✰✰
2. lenobia’s vow: ✰✰½
3. neferet’s curse: ✰✰✰
4. kalona’s fall: ✰✰✰

But, my belle, choose battles you can win without losing your heart and your soul."

Another great novella and a perfect addition to the main stories. Lenobia is one of my favourite professors (she's the Mistress of Horses, so of course she would be a fave). This story mostly takes place before Lenobia is even Marked, which is interesting and makes her tragic romance that much more meaningful. I love how well this story ties into the main series and can't wait to see the rest play out.

4/5⭐

After reading the House of Night series I already knew a little bit about Lenobia's backstory when she briefly mentions it, so I went into this with a rough idea of what it might be about and what might happen.

This story is set in Lenobia's earlier years and is mostly focused prior to her being marked. It follows her struggles as a young lady who is trying to break away from some of the darkness that is around her. We get an insight into her love of horses and how she find love.

This story really broke me at points because I found it so emotional. Not only is her story one of heartbreak but it is rich in history and reading some of her struggles was upsetting.

If you want to know more about Lenobia definitely pick this book up, but have your tissues at the ready.

This books was so sad. She found her love only to have him taken away from her. She was treated so poorly since she was born and had a horrible man stalker her. I was hoping she would at least have many years with Martin…. Only to have him taken from her. He saved her life, and I’m really hoping that she will have her chance to have him back in her lifetime.

Happy reading 🖤🖤

The series were written much better than novellas. I'm disappointed with this novella. There were no plot, ans story and relationships are very weak. It is pretty much boring and unconvincing.
The ending was terrible and unbelievable.
