The Last Musketeer #2

Traitor's Chase

Rate this book
Greg Rich is beginning to get the hang of things in 1615 Paris. Having assumed the identity of a young D'Artagnan, Greg united the legendary three Musketeers and succeeded in freeing his parents from a dank prison cell. But he hasn't figured out how to get home. Or how to defeat the dangerous Michel Dinicoeur.

When Dinicoeur escapes from the Bastille and flees to Spain, the Musketeers charge through the French countryside in hot pursuit. The boys are unexpectedly joined by Milady de Winter and her friend Catherine. Along the way, the group is ambushed by knife-wielding thieves and assassins. Someone is anticipating their every move. But who? And how?

There appears to be a traitor in their ranks, and if the Musketeers can't trust each other, who can they trust? It's "All for one, and one for all!" . . . Isn't it?

“Ignorance of the truth is a recipe for disaster.”

First of all, I would like to thank Brooke for Buddy Reading this with me! I had a great time discussing it with you! Click here for her review!

Now, onto the review!

Note: This review will contain spoilers from the previous book, "The Last Musketeer." Read at your own risk.

This book was absolutely amazing! Stuart Gibbs has done it again. Awesome characters, windy plot, and captivating writing, this book has it all!

Characters: I loved the characters. Each one had a unique personality, and were three-dimensional. I do wish there was more character growth though. The plot was completely over-powering the characters, I hardly got to see any development in any of the characters.

Greg: Awesome main character! Greg is a stubborn, brave, friendly boy. He is definitely a strong main character. Throughout the book, he feels as if he doesn't belong in France, he feels like an outsider and has trouble fitting in with the Musketeers.

Unfortunately, I didn't see much growth or resolution to this internal conflict. I hope the conflict will be settled in the next book! It's really satisfying to watch characters grow and settle their conflicts.

Athos: He was...meh. I honestly didn't like him much. I mean, I didn't care much for his personality lol.

Athos is a former soldier, stubborn, brave, and kind of thick-headed. He is a good guy, willing to help out anybody. But I didn't like the fact he constantly acted like Milady and Catherine couldn't do anything because they were girls.

I mean, I guess that's how things were in France back then, but I got to be honest, it kind of got me mad XD. Thankfully the two girls kept proving him wrong countless times. It feels so good to prove Athos wrong lol.

Like I said before, I didn't see any character development in Athos. He was overall okay, but there was hardly any internal conflict and growth.

Aramis: I definitely like Aramis. Aramis is the brains of the group, always coming up with good plans. I liked his personality, sweet, honest, and smart. However, there isn't much to say about him though. As much as I liked him, he wasn't focused on as much as in the previous book.

Sweet Aramis didn't have any character development either, I hope this improves in the next book.

Porthos: I really liked Porthos. He is funny, brave, and clever when put in a tight spot. It was quite cool seeing him think and react to tough situations. Definitely musketeer-worthy. However, he was treated like a side character! No growth, no development.

I need more Porthos in the next book or I'm going to be angry XD.

Catherine: Catherine was mostly a side character, but I still like her! Catherine is portrayed as Milady's sidekick. She is clever, strong, and brave. She also gets really easily offended whenever people underestimate her. It is so satisfying to watch her prove them wrong!

Again, no character development, or growth. But I still think she is a really cool character, and I need more of her!

Milady: Saved the best for the last! Milady is my favorite character of all! She is definitely a strong female character. She is sassy, cunning, and...mysterious. While Milady accompanies the Musketeers on their mission, is she hiding something of her own?

Hmmm. But I loved her SO much, I am Milady's #1 fan. When it was revealed that I was so shocked! Milady is so clever. She didn't let Athos and Aramis's love for her stop her. In fact, She is an absolutely outstanding character, and I look forward to seeing her in the next book!

But, I didn't see much character development or growth here. But I don't care in this case! Her flashy personality made up for it. :)

Plot: Oh my God. Not even words can begin to describe my shock at the plot-twists. So allow me to explain how I felt through a gif:

Multiply our dear Kermit by ten, and that's my reaction.

Moving on, the plot was CRAZY.

Greg, a boy from the 21st century, got trapped in France in the 1600s, along with his parents. In the previous book, Greg becomes friends with the Three Musketeers. He claims to be D'Artagnan from Spain, so no one suspects a thing. He then with his fellow Musketeers, defeats Dinicoeur, an immortal time traveler. Or so they thought...the villain managed to survive and get away.

So the whole book was them going on a journey to defeat Dinicoeur, and retrieve the Devil's Stone. The Devil's Stone is an artifact which is what cause Greg to travel to France in the first place. The stone is split in two, and if he gets both pieces, he will be able to go home to the 21st century. However, Dinicoeur has one of the pieces, and no one knows where the second piece is. So it's a race to find the 2nd piece.

Along the search for the Stone, Greg also has to stop Dinicoeur from taking over France. So Greg and the 3 Muketeers, teamed up with friends Catherine and Milady go on crazy adventures to achieve these two missions.

However, there is more to the story. Way more. The plot twists are so CRAZY. I had my suspicions, and some of them were right, but there were some which TOTALLY blew my mind.

I guessed that but I did not realize that Like how?? Completely crazy plot twists!

I really enjoyed the plot, Stuart Gibbs always gives the best plot twists, his plots never fail to disappoint me!

Writing: Ah. You know what I love about middle grade books? The writing. The thing with YA books is that authors are trying to make the writing more formal, and in that attempt it can sometimes mess up the story. I just love the middle grade writing style. It's simple, but not too simple. It's also very humorous.

I love how Gibbs writes. Just like any middle grade book it's simple and humorous. But, Gibbs does have his unique "aura" when writing completely unique to his books. I don't know how to explain it, but his writing is amazing.

So to confirm, I took one star off for the lack of character development. The book was so busy with the plot, I hardly got to see how any of these characters grew!

Anyways, I look forward to the next book, thank you Stuart Gibbs for another lovely book! :)

Thank you so much to Mango for reading this with me! You can find her lovely review here!

Onto the review!

I enjoyed the fast-paced parts of this story, but there was a lot of predictability (but within what I predicted there were more twists...)

As always, Gibbs' writing style is detailed- but no overly so, mysterious- but not spooky. It's a perfect blend of middle-grade, seriousness, tinted with humor.

I agree with Mango in her review, I didn't see very much character development, which was a little disappointing. Secrets that were revealed in this book will hopefully lead to more character changes in book 3! While I still liked the main characters, I just wished there was more to them in this one.

The plot was very speedy, which marks a Stuart Gibbs novel. The pacing was very nice and fit well with the story. It was full of turns, but also predictability. During a reveal at the end, for one part, I was not so surprised, but one sentence later- I was SHOOK. I can't wait to see what goes in the next installment!

This book gave off the perfect feeling that there was something more than what you already suspected, but you can't tell just what yet!

While this book wasn't as good as it's series starter, it still blew me away and has left me wanting more!

Review to come!

This series was just so much fun. It had time travel, adventure, young love and was thrilling. What a great way for young people to get a flavor of a great classic The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. It also weaved in history of the time. I just loved this series and would recommend to young to old.

Exciting.

Loved the details and the twists and turns. Works well as a middle book, leaving lots of questions. Like Gibbs stuff.

I listened to this in two sittings so I couldn't not give it 5 stars. This was so fun! I'm so glad to say that, in my opinion, it held up and was just as good, if not better, than the first! The action was great, the story was fast-paced, and there were exciting scenes that kept me on my toes. I'm very excited to finish this trilogy in the coming months ☺️

Another exciting installment in this magical series full of time travel and sword fights!

Stuart Gibbs did not disappoint with his sequel to “The Last Musketeer.” This book was just as thrilling as the first and he balanced the action perfectly. Too often, a book can have so much action to the point where it isn’t fun anymore. Even though this book was action-packed, Gibbs never went over that line!

I also enjoyed the introduction of a new character: Catharine. She was a great addition to the series and I can’t wait for more of her in the next book! I wish I could see her in modern day - I think she’d love it here.

I’m a bit scared for whatever comes next, mostly because I don’t want it to end!!! Each book in this series is short; how will all the conflicts ever be resolved?!

Enjoyed this about as much as the first one in the series. Fun middle grade adventure story. Some things in the plot are a little too coincidental, but it's the kind of story that really ought to feel that way :). Definitely one I'd recommend for tween boys as it's fast-paced and has lots of action like sword fights and chases. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Especially when your enemies are your friends. ---Greg Rich is stuck. LITERALLY stuck in the 1600s. Not only that, but he's pretending to be D'Artagnan, one of the famous Musketeers. In order to get back home to the present day, he must track down Michel Dinicoeur and get both halves of the Devil's Stone. But, with assassins following Greg and the Musketeer's every move, it seems like there is a traitor in their midst. Will the traitor be uncovered? And does the mysterious Milady de Winter have anything to do with the attacks?

This is the second book in a three-book series, and I have to say, I enjoyed the first book more. But that being said, I'm not saying that this book is bad, or that I didn't enjoy it! I really really did! I just happened to like the first one better.
The plot in this book is awesome, and so is the character development! The description is so incredible - it's like I'm right there with Greg! And the chapter breaks! OMCUPCAKES - they left me wanting more!

I hope you like this book as much as I do! Thank you for reading my review! Follow @bronteandwilder on Instagram for fun book reviews!

Traitor's Chase (book 2 in The Last Musketeer series) is another good MG adventure story by Stuart Gibbs. In this second book of the series, Greg Rich, who traveled back into the Paris of 1615, finds himself and the other three musketeers (Athos, Porthos, and Aramis) on an adventure to save all of Paris.
The story explores the new relationship of these young musketeers as they together meet one adversity after another. It's truly a "how are they going to get out of this" type of story. Plus, the reader will undoubtedly feel they've gone back in time to France along with the protagonist.
Anyone who likes the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan would be sure to like this series as well. Good job. And, more brain candy for those avid readers who like a good, quick read into adventure.

This is the second book in this legendary series. ★★★★★ review for this one definitely. In this book, Greg (D'Artagnan) and his friend set on a quest to find out information about Spain but there is a traitor among the Musketeers. Greg must use the things he's learned from his friend Athos to fight his battles. They must conquer their enemies and the the horrible Michel Donicoeur. That might sound easy but things are harsh between the Musketeers, they aren't getting along as well as Greg Rich would like. Then the gang finds out about a Spanish army approaching France. Greg and his friends need to lose their grudges against each other and work together. This is a book I would recommend to everyone.

This was probably my favorite book in the series. I didn't think Gibbs could top the action of the first novel but this one really was a new adventure on every page. Gibbs is truly a master of conflict, suspense, and tension. These young Musketeers went from one wild, daring escapade to the next but yet the character development was well-paced and gradual. I have found many young reader books where the character development is overly obvious, presumably so that younger readers catch it, but here the character growth is subtle and slow, it doesn't hit you over the head. Also, I find his characters to be very realistic teenagers. All over, this was a beautifully crafted story with a thrilling plot and likable characters.

Still riveting!

Noooooo! Why was Greg the ONLY ONE who could see it! I knew they'd be betrayed from the start. Anyone who read book one or knows about The Three Musketeers would know a certain someone would turn on them. It was frustrating that the other boys were so....BLIND lol
Once again, we are thrown into schemes, political moves and action. Greg was actually pretty smart, learned to fight better and resourceful! So proud of our boy 😍
But his enemy was still out there and had the backing of Spain and assassins, so the going was tough. Can't wait to see how it all ends!

Another fast-paced swashbuckling adventure in The Last Musketeer series. In this second book, Greg, with help from the Musketeers, is trying to find the two parts of the Devil's Stone so he and his family can return to their time period. Gibbs is a master storyteller and this book has it all: adventure, intrigue, humor, well-researched history, and some romance. Fans of the The Three Musketeers will enjoy seeing Athos, Aramis, Porthos, and Milady de Winter in action. This is a solidly good story that will leave readers very ready for the third and final book in the series.

It was an enjoyable read. But not one of my favorite Stuart Gibbs series’s (But I don’t want you to think it was bad, because some of Stuart Gibbs’s other series is our awesome and they must become pretty hard to top.) After the initial shock in the first book of being in 16th century France I kept waiting for something really surprising to happen in this one, but it only came at the very end of the book. So I became completely invested at the very end. Thank goodness there is another book!

An excellent sequel to the first book. It balances adventure and stakes really well. As someone who loves the _____ in King Arthur's Court genre of portal fiction, this twist on it by setting our everyday teen Greg in the world of the Three Musketeers continues to be interesting and provide lots of new ideas. The ending sequences with the explosives are particularly exciting, and the entire bit about Falconry made me smile from ear to ear. Excited to read the next one.

I absolutely loved this book and I recommend this to the young reader. This book had me on my toes the whole time and I love that aspect of the novel. The characters really developed from the first, and there is conflict between the musketeers. The rivalry's, the action, the adventure, and mystery of this book make it on par.

I didn’t think this book would be as good as it was. As a long-time fan of Stuart Gibbs, I was excited to discover this other trilogy he had written. The first book was good, but not as interesting as I had hoped. But this one turned out to be gripping and action-packed, and I loved it. Good job, Stuart. You’ve pulled me back in!

It didn't really progress the story of Greg. It mainly just talked about the friendships between the musketeers. It was also very boring at certain points. I wish it had more progression through the story. But I can't wait to read the last book in the series!

This book is so good I don’t know how to make it better. It has a good amount of suspense but not enough to make the book boring. It is a well written book and I can’t wait to read the next book.

I didn't love the second installment of "The Last Musketeer" but it still was very good. This one felt very real. The musketeers have to travel from Paris to Spain and it is quite accurate. It reminded me of Frodo and Sam trying to get through Mordor!

Excellent 2nd installment! Middle grade time travel novel back to King Louis XIII & the Musketeers’ time. We are heartily enjoying! Lucky the 3rd book was immediately available with no hold needed. But of a cliffhanger ending. Great audiobooks.
