Old Fools #2

Two Old Fools - Olé: Another Slice of Andalucian Life

Rate this book
Never believe that life in a tiny Spanish mountain village is predictable. Vicky and Joe have finished fixing up their house and look forward to peaceful days enjoying their retirement. Then the fish van arrives, and instead of delivering fresh fish, disgorges the Ufarte family. The peace of El Hoyo is shattered.

In this, the second of the ‘Two Old Fools’ series, Vicky and Joe are catapulted (and ‘cat’ is the operative word) into more bizarre situations and scrapes. Surrounded by the same cast of eccentric characters introduced in 'Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools', the two old fools muddle through until they are forced into making a life-changing decision.

Packed with badly behaved humans and animals, irreverent humour and sunshine, 'Two Old Fools - Olé!' will make you laugh out loud, while the mouth-watering Spanish recipes will have you reaching for your saucepan.

“Andalucía as it’s never been done before - a very quirky, funny and enjoyable tale - loved the subtle humour, Olé!”
Karen Wheeler, author of 'Tout Sweet: Hanging Up My Heels For A New Life In France.'

"I absolutely loved it! Funny, honest and impossible to put down." Justin Aldridge, Eye on Spain

Victoria Twead is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Amazon bestselling author. Eleven years living in a tiny, remote, mountain village in Spain and owning probably the most dangerous cockerel in Europe, inspired Victoria to write “Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools”. Subsequent books in the Old Fools’ series continue to pop up.

So far, her husband has utterly failed to wrestle the laptop from Victoria’s vice-like grip and she continues to write and publish other authors' books in Australia. Another joyous life-chapter has begun for the pair.

In the most entertaining and delightful way, “Two Old Fools - Olé!” captures the vitality of southern Spanish life for ex-pats Vicky and Joe seeking sun and solace for their retirement. They find warmth in abundance but, alas, little peace when the exuberant and decidedly numerous members of a Spanish family introduce themselves as their next-door neighbours.

Victoria Twead captures the fun in the unexpected, compassion in the confusion, and always picks out the pearl in the apparently prosaic.

Most fortunately for you and me, “Two Old Fools - Olé!” is but the second in a series of six about the “Old Fools” – a nickname that belies the depth and warmth of insight offered by the author.

Another delightful, humorous memoir. I turned to the last page and quickly requested the next book in the series from my library. I MUST know what happened to Joe and Victoria next! Hubby and I loved Spain so much that we talked about selling everything and moving there but, alas, it was all just talk. We're enjoying reading about what might have been if we were more adventuresome (and younger.) I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes and we hope to return to Spain when Covid is over.

I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with "Veeky" and Joe's life in El Hoyo. In book 2 of this series, their quiet life in rural Spain is interrupted by the arrival of new noisy neighbours - the Ufarte family. Thus a series of small children become regular visitors to their home.
The author writes with a generous sprinkling of humour, and I particularly enjoyed her hilarious description of Joe's spraying of the grape vine...
I loved reading of the couples encounters with deadly caterpillars, as well as heartwarming stories of donkeys, dogs, cats and kittens.
The ending left me feeling sad for Victoria, as she comes to terms with Joe's new dreams...

Having read five of Victoria Twead’s books so far, I realised I’d missed a few, so I’m now filling in the gaps. I won this second book in her Old Fools series in a draw and I have to say it is simply delightful. Although cats figure more than chickens in this one, I absolutely loved reading about their adventures with feral felines and also learning more about the charming villagers the Tweads lived amongst. Their neighbours were a constant source of entertainment and despite El Hoyo being a remote village, it never seemed to be quiet for long. The characters are all beautifully depicted but my favourites have to be the Ufarte twins, both funny and cheeky. The book is full of great recipes for foodies, and plenty of links to photos that correspond with the chapters. All in all, it’s a lovely read that I was sad to finish.

Loving this series of books.

I read the first book in the series twice. Finished this one in a couple of days. Really well written. Pleasant and hard to put down I've thoroughly enjoyed both books and will start the next one as soon as I've posted this review. Can't recommend them highly enough.

A entertaining romp through a year or so in a small Andalusian town in Spain. New neighbors move in next door, providing sweet and humorous episodes that further endear all the locals to the readers.

FIVE BIG FAT STARS!!!!!

I have read all three of Victoria Twead's 'Two Old Fools' books (a fourth is on the way!) and, for me, this was the best, outstanding, it had everything. A great start, funny moments already in the first few chapters. Hilarious scenes with Joe-poor Joe! We learn that Victoria doesn't like going to the hairdresser (and the reasons)-then the next moment there's trouble with Joe's coiffure! Priceless! Another lovely humorous episode is the 'Coffee at the Carrefour'. So brilliantly told. Knickers-funny stories of extremes of knickers, then, the informative kind where red underwear is traditional at New Year (and grapes). Victoria creates a bit of suspense in this book-about Joe-it never seems to be the right moment to ask him or she would get side-tracked doing something else and in the end I was yelling at my kindle 'WILL YOU JUST ASK HIM!!!!!' some heart-warming scenes-eg. Christmas Eve- the Procession consists of real donkey, Mr and Mrs Ufarte as Mary and Joseph and their newborn son as the baby Jesus. Just lovely. Dogs are dressed as sheep and bedlam ensues! Other traditions we learn about are the Holy Innocents Day (I hadn't heard of this before) and cakes with surprises in them-in Joe's case-a nasty surprise! As before, Victoria puts her stamp on the book by including recipes to give a real flavour for the setting-(the Sweet Potato Mash sounds yummy! ...and the Honey barbecued Chicken-mmmmmm). There is an accompanying recipe link for each chapter and they are all together in a dedicated section at the end of the book. There was one chapter where I really learned a lot about a certain type of creature, seemingly innocent-looking creatures yet deadly effects, devastating. A thoroughly enjoyable book with laughter and tears, varied writing techniques including letters, emails, facebook threads, twitter entries, lists(!), photos throughout the book, even video cameos-there are a couple of these: What an excellent idea to include them; one is a link to youtube to a mini film of the kittens playing, about three minutes, it's very well done, excellent quality visual and music. An absolutely lovely reading experience. This is a wonderful, memorable book.

As with her first book Chickens Mules and Two Old Fools, Victoria Twead is such a great storyteller! She and her husband Joe had moved from England to sunny Spain and are living in the small village of El Hoyo. Once again, I chuckled and laughed my way through the many stories. Judith and her Mother’s tomato plants. Joe, the grapes and the over ripe melon. The chickens, mule and those sweet kittens. The beautiful story of the poinsettia from Carmen-Bethina plus the many stories of the neighbors from El Hoyo! It was nice to see the pictures she added and can’t wait to try a few of the many recipes. With all this said, I thoroughly enjoyed reading “Ole” and once again I feel like I’ve known Victoria and we’ve been friends forever! I look forward to her next book!

I'm fast becoming a Victoria Twead fan... after laughing out loud through her first book “Chickens Mules and Two Old Fools” I was delighted to continue Vicky's and Joe's adventures romping through life in the small village of El Hoyo, Spain. Truly enjoyed the kitty tales and the new neighbors. These books are a pure delight... and I'm looking forward to the next installment... with camels.

Not a bad sequel, though I confess I didn't get into the many sections featuring the Tweads' cats, nor the ones concerning the Gin Twins' chickens.

This is the second of many in Victoria Twead's Old Fools series. Having sold up everything in the UK, Vicky and Joe have relocated to a tiny village in the Spanish mountains. We hear of their adventures with colourful residents and furry friends.

With great drama, a new family moves into a nearby empty house. Vicky and Joe watch in dismay from their roof terrace. All too soon, they find themselves struggling to cope with the new neighbours' lively children. To say nothing of their dazzling, flirtatious Aunt Lola.

Week after week, they battle the weather during an exceptionally wet winter. But friends from the UK want to visit. The famous gin twins arrive again, bringing – among many, many other British specialities – the very first physical copy Vicky gets to see of her best-selling debut book, Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools.

A large chunk of the book centres on the variety of feral cats they find themselves landed with, which soon dominate their lives.

Vuvuzelas abound as the World Cup rages, with everyone watching the big screen TV set up in the middle of the street.

A huge crane is erected for the construction of The Monstrosity, a massive block of flats, and allows the workers to spy on the residents. But it has its use when Joe drops his camera from a bridge into the steep gully.

The mayor's magnificent villa on the village outskirts opens its doors to everyone; planning permission was, it seems, expedited.

Time and again, Vicky notices Joe's withdrawn, contemplative mood. What is troubling him? Her attempts to broach the subject are repeatedly frustrated. And soon finding a home for adventurous Smut and cute little Beauty becomes a prime concern. Cuddly Chox they will keep. At least, that is the plan. Until Joe confesses his concerns and throws everything topsy-turvy.

Following each chapter is a simple local recipe – usually some sort of tapas, made with plenty of garlic and olive oil. This adds a culinary touch to the book.

Twead has a lively, entertaining way of bringing everyday scenes to life, playing on the differences between Spanish and British characters and cultures. Two Old Fools – Olé is light reading with delightful characters and some suspense.

Ah! Back to reading Victoria's second Memoir in Spain. How much I laughed reading this. Its funny how Vic explains everything and with Joe (her husband) do together.
description

I cherished every page. I used to read a few pages every night before I went to bed. Try to dream about the thing I just read and imagine my self in Spain. How lovely books are it takes you back in time and you get to live someone's life all over again.

I loved everything about this book. Staring with the update from the 1st Book and then going on with their lives. I don't know if I will ever get the chance in my life to experience Spain country side. But I already felt like I have experienced Spain, with what Vic told us in her book.

Vic if your reading this. I hope you write more books. I know there are a few already. But you mentioned something about Thailand and other places. Those stories are still pending. I know there is a cook book as well.

In Victoria Twead’s Two Old Fools- Ole', she and her husband Joe continue to enjoy their quiet life as British expats in the village of El Hoyo, Spain until the Ufarte family moves in next door. They have numerous children including a set of twin girls that dress identically and a toddler that cannot be put down whom Vicky humorously calls Snap-On. He is eternally attached to someone’s hip and his older brothers quickly destroy the Twead’s garden, and later paint another neighbor’s expensive dog to his horror.

Peace in the village is gone and the Twead’s end up babysitting for the mischievous kids, as they deal with Joe regularly being taunted and bitten by Fifi, the Ufarte dog. But the fun festivals, visits from friends from the UK, and other loving villagers make up for them having to learn to live with the ongoing drama from the new family. They take it all in stride as they continue to raise their chickens and nurture a new family of cats until they can find them an adoptive home. There are several laugh-out loud moments, and again each chapter ends with a scrumptious Spanish recipe. The Tweads are headed to Bahrain for one-year teaching jobs at the end of the book and they look forward to the Arabian adventure until they can return to their beloved El Hoyo.

Fabulous Sequel.
Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first Old Fools book, it was a delight to pick up the thread in this sequel. But the reader just senses from the start that change is in the air, and each time the reader gets close to finding out what it is that’s brewing underneath the surface, there’s an interruption in the story, and the reader (and Vicky) is left wandering where it’s leading, building a subtle tension runnning through the memoir amidst the the vibrant scenes painted of remote village life high in the Spanish mountains. Life there is never dull, including hilarious hairdressing shenanigans, and things are happening in the village - including a bitterly cold winter and, frustratingly, ten weeks of non-stop rain (something Vicky and her husband Joe had desired to escape when they left England). Eventually, the truth comes out from Joe, who is not happy. The change happens, and quickly. Quite a twist in the story at the end!

The book is adorned with links and I've thoroughly enjoyed viewing the free Photo Book that accompanies the memoir.

A light easy read. It’s interesting to learn about some Spanish customs. They certainly seem to be very friendly and sociable people. I was amazed to read about the cat culture in El Hoyo (not the real name of the village). The cats are not desexed, the majority are feral. Remarkably different to enjoy life in this tiny mountain village during the week as compared to the weekends when so many tourists descend upon it. During the week it sounds quite idyllic.

As in Old Fools Book # 1, I am still not sure about the idea of Spanish recipes throughout. Maybe the recipes could all be together at the end of the book instead, I found them a bit distracting.

I look forward to reading the next chapter in the lives of Vicky and Joe, sharing their experiences in Bahrain in ‘Two Old Fools on a Camel’. I have a feeling this will be very interesting.

This is Victoria Twead’s second book about her time living with her husband in a small Andalusian village, rearing chickens and looking after stray cats. If you enjoyed the first book, Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools you will surely also like this one with its lively tales of crazy neighbours, newborn kittens, vuvuzelas and charming village life. The stories are told with wry humour and there are local recipes included in every chapter. The parts that made me laugh the most were the Mayor’s name for Victoria and their friend Judith’s misnomer for the vuvuzelas everyone had acquired for the World Cup. I will not disclose them here, if you are curious I recommend reading the book and immersing yourself in a beloved, quirky Spanish town for a while!

I received this book as a prize from the We Love Memoirs Facebook group - thank you very much! My review is honest.

In don't know how these wonderful books by Victoria Twead and her husband missed my radar when they were written. I am reading the whole, series now. The first two are about their moving and settling in to the tiny hamlet in Andalucia, Spain. What characters the meet! Joe wants to spend one more year teaching physics and math and they find a place in an international, school in the Kingdom of Bahrain just before the "Arab Spring!" Joe is to be the highschool maths and physics teacher and Vicky the middle school English teacher. But that is the next book that I am reading now.

There are also two prequels which detail their childhood and school years, the one young fool books. I highly recommend them all for a delightful, quirky, reading experience.

I fell in love with Vicky and Joe in "Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools" so reading this next chapter in their lives was like coming to visit old friends. I loved everything about this book: the motley neighbors, their kindness and often hilarious antics (Oh, Lola....you are SO naughty! And the twins...just too adorable!) the recipes, the funny personal tidbits of revelation on both Vicky and Joe, and anecdotes about the kitties, especially Choxy. I was sad to know he wouldn't be able to stay with them. This book as was the first in the series was absolutely delightful and I can't wait to journey with them on their next adventure.

I may have enjoyed this one a bit more than the first one in the series. As one who loves cats, it broke my heart how little respect society gave cats in Spain (or maybe just this village, I can't remember what the author said). Hopefully people have woken up there and realized they're a huge part of the growing cat population. But I love how the author and her husband are so easily taken in by these precious creatures God created. My husband and I are suckers too for cats!

I'm very disappointed that neither Hoopla nor Libby have the rest of the series on audiobook because I'd really like to know the rest of their story. These books are such fun to listen to!

As I mentioned in my review of the first book in this "Two Old Fools" series, I had no intention of reading all 3 books back to back but here I am already finished this, the 2nd one ! I have enjoyed this lovely light hearted account of Victoria and Joe's day to day lives in the tiny village of El Hoyo, Spain. The well written memoirs of the colourful village characters and traditions have kept me entertained and turning the pages. Other books on my extensive "to read" list are going to have to wait a little longer; I can't wait to read "Two Old Fools on a Camel".

Victoria's writing style is very casual and makes you feel that you are right there with her. I can't help but laugh every time she describes her husband scratching his manly parts. You just know that's exactly how the scene happened.
Aside from the comedic stories, she and her husband have a heart of gold when it comes to children and animals. It's evident when they absolutely fall in love with stray cats and have difficulty parting with them as they go on their next journey.
I have read the first in this series and am looking forward to the third now.

Enjoyable read! All the characters that made the first book are present in book 2: Geronimo, Paco, Lola Ufarte, the twins, grandma, the two boys in the home behind Joe and Victoria. If you enjoyed the first book, you'll love this one. Joe & Victoria learn that the "Monstrosity" is not as bad as they thought. Joe & Vicky also add more animals to their menagerie... but all is not permanent which leads to book3, "Two old fools on a camel".

This was the first book in the Old Fools series I read, so I've read them out of order, but that didn't matter as this book stands very well by itself. I loved getting to know the characters in the book, the neighbours and other villagers that bring the book to life. It's very well written and easy to read and not just a great introduction to the area but also a wonderful tale. I'll be sure to buy the others in the series too.

Laughter and tears

Victoria Twead is such an entertaining writer. I laughed with her and cried with her. It's chock full of memorable friends, neighbors, and family. Each event in the lives of Joe and Vicky is easily envisioned by the reader. It is full of warm, lovely, endearing, funny, and heartbreaking stories. Loved it.

After reading the first one, I knew I had to read the second and it didn’t disappoint. It was just as well written and maybe even more funny. I love reading about what it’s like living in a small village in the mountains of Spain.I was hooked on wanting to know what was wrong with Joe and I could stop reading until I found out.

I was totally enthralled with the first book of the series, "Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools". I got out of sync reading "Two Old Fools on a Camel in Bahrain" prior to this, the 2nd of series. Glad to be back in Spain with Victoria and Joe and all the familiars. A new family, the "Monstrosity", cat lives and chicken replacement. I enjoyed this book immensely. Ready for #4!!!

A lovely gentle biographical story of an older couple who have chosen to live in a small Spanish mountain village. The ups and downs of life, neighbours and negotiating life in a tiny town with new customs and language.
If you enjoyed Peter Mayle's Provence books then this one will hit the spot :)
