Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquess of Vargas Llosa, more commonly known as Mario Vargas Llosa, was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist, and politician. Vargas Llosa was one of the Spanish language and Latin America's most significant novelists and essayists and one of the leading writers of his generation. Some critics consider him to have had a more substantial international impact and worldwide audience than any other writer of the Latin American Boom. In 2010, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance, revolt, and defeat".
Vargas Llosa rose to international fame in the 1960s with novels such as The Time of the Hero (La ciudad y los perros, 1963/1966), The Green House (La casa verde, 1965/1968), and the monumental Conversation in The Cathedral (Conversación en La Catedral, 1969/1975). He wrote prolifically across various literary genres, including literary criticism and journalism. His novels include comedies, murder mysteries, historical novels, and political thrillers. He won the 1967 Rómulo Gallegos Prize and the 1986 Prince of Asturias Award. Several of his works have been adopted as feature films, such as Captain Pantoja and the Special Service (1973/1978) and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (1977/1982). Vargas Llosa's perception of Peruvian society and his experiences as a native Peruvian influenced many of his works. Increasingly, he expanded his range and tackled themes from other parts of the world. In his essays, Vargas Llosa criticized nationalism in different parts of the world.
Like many Latin American writers, Vargas Llosa was politically active. While he initially supported the Cuban revolutionary government of Fidel Castro, Vargas Llosa later became disenchanted with its policies, particularly after the imprisonment of Cuban poet Heberto Padilla in 1971, and later identified as a liberal and held anti-left-wing ideas. He ran for the presidency of Peru in 1990 with the center-right Frente Democrático coalition, advocating for liberal reforms, but lost the election to Alberto Fujimori in a landslide.
Vargas Llosa continued his literary career while advocating for right-wing activists and candidates internationally following his exit from direct participation in Peruvian politics. He was awarded the 1994 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the 1995 Jerusalem Prize, the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature, the 2012 Carlos Fuentes International Prize, and the 2018 Pablo Neruda Order of Artistic and Cultural Merit. In 2011, Vargas Llosa was made the Marquess of Vargas Llosa by Spanish king Juan Carlos I. In 2021, he was elected to the Académie française.

The War of the End of the World is a panoramic and polychromatic canvas – it is equally historical, philosophical, psychological and adventurous story and one of the deepest at that.

Do the rhetorical quarrels of bourgeois political parties have anything to do with the interests of the humble and downtrodden?

The question is posed and the entire novel is a meticulous answer to this question.
There are some strange pages in the history of humankind and the novel is an endeavor to open one of such pages. The central figure is a magnetic person whose magnetism can’t be explained rationally but the thousands were on his side and they fought unselfishly and desperately for their misty ideals.

He had had the thought that, here, something different from reason governed things, men, time, death, something that it would be unfair to call madness and too general to call faith, superstition, ever since the night on which he had first heard the Counselor, immersed in that multitude which, as it listened to the deep, booming, strangely impersonal voice, had taken on a granite immobility, amid a silence one could touch. More than by the man’s words and his majestic voice, the journalist was struck, stunned, overwhelmed by that stillness, that silence in which they listened to him.

He who possesses charisma charms his followers similar to a snake staring at its helpless prey.

Practical Eschatology

At precisely the time that Fyodor Dostoevsky was writing of the Grand Inquisitor and his confrontation with a Jesus returned to the world (1879-80), the events he was fictionalising were playing themselves out in the scrublands of the Brazilian State of Bahia. In fact, the Brazilian drama surpasses Dostoevsky’s plot by including all the celebrities from the original biblical stories. Who says history doesn’t repeat itself?

Mario Vargas Llosa’s The War of the End of the World is a docu-fictional account of the so-called War of Canudos and the events leading to it from 1877 to 1897. In Vargas Llosa’s account it doesn’t take much imagination to identify Antonio, The Counsellor, as Jesus; the revolutionary Scotsman, Galileo Gall, as St. Paul; the local administrative power, Baron de Canabrava, as Pilate; and the psycho-fanatic, Big Joao, as Judas. The Mystic, The Revolutionary, Satan, and The Betrayer could be playing out their cosmic roles rather than merely bit parts in a provincial theatre.

Antonio’s disciples (the wretchedly poor, the dispossessed, criminals, the psychologically needy), followed Antonio in increasingly large and militant groups as he roamed the Galilee of Bahia State. Wherever they went both plagues and miracles were reported, thus combining Old and New testament references. The disciples had no means of support but lived off the contributions of food and water offered in the villages they entered. Antonio preached and the band grew.

What he preached was a kind of repentance: the rejection of political republicanism and the return to monarchy (Brazil became the realm of the Portuguese king after the Napoleonic putsch of his country in 1807). The details of things to be held anathema were derivative: irreligion, taxes and the metric system. Let the Samaritans of the South in Rio and São Paulo have their republican apostasy, Antonio and his followers knew the joys of the true Kingdom of God (ruled by Dom Pedro of course) with its capital in Salvador. They resisted the forces of the state like the Maccabees at Masada. Their attack formation was that of a religious holy day procession; they used whatever weaponry available in close combat. They did not mind suffering casualties of ten to one for the cause.

Galileo Gall was the (mythical, unhistorical) Osama bin Laden of his day. He represents how the movement was shaped by cultural forces outside of Brazil and often quite opposed to the teaching of Antonio. Gall was persona non grata in his native Britain, jailed in Turkey, Egypt and the USA for proletarian agitation and unionising, and wanted for murder in France, in Spain, and in Portugal. His gospel was that of the anarchists Proudhon and Bakunin. Gall's anthropological vision was only slightly less radical than that of St. Paul. He was convinced that phrenology, the study of the shape of the head, told all. For Paul, only belief mattered, for Galileo it was hat size.

As with the movement of Jesus, Antonio’s went well at first. But success, as so often, was its own undoing. As a fiction structured around historical events, there is never any doubt that everything will end in tears and death. Vargas Llosa’s brilliance lies not in creating suspense about the outcome but about the development of the characters as they realise what they are themselves creating. For me this is the magic of The War of the End of the World.

It is also a rather splendid allegory of the early development of Christianity. Vargas Llosa's insertion of the Paul-character in the form of Galileo Gall suggests that he meant such an allegorical interpretation. The rebel who ensures both the dissemination and the distortion of the message of hope was an ideological as well as literary temptation he couldn't resist.

that's what happens when the world's most overrated living author (GGM) gets punched in the face by a far superior one (MVL). the fight occurred in a mexican moviehouse in 1976 and neither of 'em have ever discussed said incident. whatever went down (a woman? politics?), i wish i was there to give the chubby bastard a kick in the ribs when he was on the ground.

the war of the end of the world deserves the place in the pantheon occupied by marquez's silly epics. here we have a 20th century history of the peloponnesian war, a sprawling messy fuckoff of a book featuring a most intriguing and elusive lead character: 'war' -- a dumbfuck spawned by a cocktail of human fanaticism jingoism and idiocy. forget 100 yrs of solitude and love in the time of cholera. read vargas llosa's war of the end of the world and mutis's the adventures and misadventures of maqroll.

and vargas llosa himself? a marxist castro-supporter turned right-leaning peruvian presidential candidate? love it. his opponents read sex/violence passages from his novels over peruvian radio in an effort to scare the shit outta voters. it worked. a japanese-peruvian became president.

MVL has long held the top spot on my 'people i'd like to sit with in an open-air bar drinking tequila while arguing books & politics until the sun comes up' list. gotta make this happen.

It is around Antonio Vicente Mendes Maciel, a historical and Christic figure, ascetic and hallucinated. A madman doubled as a saint, nicknamed the Counselor by his disciples, who, one day, a millenarian and messianic movement formed in Bahia. At the end of the 19th century, when Brazil had recently abolished slavery and was still in the early stages of democracy, it transitioned from an Empire to a Republic in less than ten years. This court of miracles, this motley collection of poor natives, beggars, pilgrims, impoverished peasants, Maroon enslaved people, freedmen, bandits, and repentant murderers, refused to bow to the new power. It rejected the census, civil marriage, the decimal metric system, paying taxes, and the ban on private property and money in absolute collectivism, restoring churches, cemeteries, and holy places, and saw in the Republic the embodiment of the Antichrist. This "City of god" successfully routed three military expeditions to pave the way for the final one. The War of the End of the World, a moving and harsh historical fresco, seeks to bring this special moment back to life with its epic breath and the great wealth of these well-established characters. By freeing himself from the constraints of time and space, Mario Vargas Llosa meticulously retraces the circumstances and motivations that led all these destitute and disgraced beings to wander through the Sertão, a particularly inhospitable region of the Brazilian Northeast. To share without backing the fate of this illuminated man, whom he sees as a prophet, he describes the organization and the preparations of the belligerents of the two camps. The maneuvers of the Republicans' exploit, the sovereignty of monarchical inspiration, and the press organs in the pay of their sponsors are to blame for the proliferation of this seditious Sebastianist movement.
This novel is about a guerrilla civil war, a phenomenon that Latin America's history is replete with. It is a particularly poignant book, and we do not come out unscathed.

This riveting story about a true event in Brasilian history is a page-turner. The story of the surprising rise and inevitable fall of the commune of Canudo out in the middle of the Bahia region is told from several perspectives and using painstaking detail. The scenes of battle are excruciating and incredibly realistic. Once again, Mario Vargas Llosa has delivered a marvelous piece of literature here and one can see why he deserved his Nobel in 2010.

The narrative style is classic Vargas Llosa: different perspectives covering all sides of this particular conflict and putting it in its complex historical context. Certainly one of the great historical novels of the 20th C.

In light of International Women's Day, I would need to point out that I can see how feminists would object to some misogyny in Vargas Llosa however. Two rape victims become either lovers or married to their rapists and the other principal female character goes insane. Perhaps it is a South American machismo, but all the other female characters came off as ignorant fanatics as well. But, to his credit, in his later books like Feast of the Goat or The Bad Girl, the female characters are stronger and more developed.

This is truly epic historic fiction.

That a "mad man" walking from village to village in the poor northeast of Brazil in the state of Bahia, during the late 1800's preaching to the poor the brotherhood of all, and the end of the world would cause the deaths of countless people, and shake the very foundation of the new republic ... is unfathomable. Since the abolition of slavery and the monarchy less then a decade ago 1888, 1889, many homeless slaves have nowhere to go or feel wanted anywhere, white farm workers no jobs, neglected Indians living in abject poverty eating roots, when available but they do have something in common, each is powerless and hungry exploited by the rich landowners , the government more interested in collecting taxes than helping them, they die like flies in the arid lands, frequent droughts, epidemics, bandits roaming the countryside killing stealing from the inhabitants the little they have. Nobody cares until Antonio Vincent Mendes Maciel, known as Antonio the Counselor. Gathering followers after twenty years of fixing neglected churches, cemeteries, comforting the impoverished becomes a saint to the locals. He decides to build a new town Canudos, ( Canes) spectacularly growing to 30,000 citizen in a few years, causes concern to the nervous authorities, since he opposes the Republic separation of church and state and Freemasons, unbelievers that influence greatly the Brazilian establishment. The city does not use paper money, trading is the custom everyone has a piece of land and a mud house to live, food given to the helpless health houses for the sick and old, farms outside growing crops by the river nearby all, are equal. The benevolent Counselor, no titles orders the building of a second church a magnificent cathedral the Temple of the Blessed Jesus, a bell tower above it ringing the faithful to come in, he Antonio gives sermons there, looking down at the adoring crowd the loyal, local priest Father Joaquim a former coward, with children from his concubine saying mass, burying the dead baptizing marrying couples. Canudos is contended the Counselor has valuable apostles to govern, a dwarf a cruel woman that killed her infant child, Maria Quadrado a famous outlaw Satan John, now Abbot John the able, canny field commander ... Pajeu, with an ugly scar on his face, an angry fierce Indian that loved to mutilate his victim's noses and ears, a runaway slave heartless Big John, who killed his owner's sister a deformed man they call the Lion, who can read reformed by Antonio but the Republic is not happy sending armies to crush what they fear is an attempt (wrongly) to restore the monarchy, one, two, three, four arrive getting bigger and bigger each one, they're surprised that these peasants fight so ferociously, why? A vicious conflict where prisoners are butchered, by both sides. They will never quite understand the rulers, that these people have something to fight for, for the first time in their lives. A place where they are welcomed, accepted and even loved the criminals, freaks the penniless, somebody is helping the lowest of the low... A tremendous novel based on fact Mario Vargas Llosa, best book many critics believe including himself, not a happy read yet true mostly, an important one too ...

What an elephantine statement. I began the novel with the impression that it was kind of a Christian millenarian Germinal in terms of the bleakness of its storyline. By the end, however, it was clear to me that Vargas Llosa's model was predominantly Russian. When AC says here that "there is a certain archaism and hieratic nature in the writing," I think this is in part what he means, though the limited third-person voice never widens to full God-like omniscience.

The novel is based on the Canudos or backlands rebellion in Brazil of the late 1890s, which is known to us primarily from Euclides Da Cunha’s pioneering Sertões (available in translation from Penguin as Backlands: The Canudos Campaign), which has been called the starting point of Brazilian letters. Brazil has deposed its monarchy and established a young, unstable republic. The disenfranchised monarchists want to hang on to their property rights and are in a political fight with the republicans. This conflict forms the novel’s lethal backstory. In the foreground is the messianic figure, Antonio Conselhiero (the Counselor), who, over thirty years of preaching in the backlands has assembled a flock of congregants, including many notorious bandits, made up largely of poor farming families forced off the land by devastating drought.

The Counselor views the new republic as the Anti-Christ because of a provision in the new constitution that separates church and state. The republic's transgressions include the institution of civil marriage, when, as the Counselor knows from direct contact with his deity, a perfectly valid form of religious marriage already exists. Also cited as fodder for rebellion is the collection of taxes, viewed as an encroachment on Church tithing; and a census, which is seen as a way to both reinstitute the slave trade, abolished under the monarchy, and provide the Anti-Christ republic with the information it needs to undertake a pogrom of all declared Catholics. An entirely baseless claim yet one that is not without irony given the story's genocidal conclusion.

In time the dispossessed pilgrims settle on one of the landholdings, Canudos, of the Baron Canabrava. The pro-republican propagandist, Epaminondas Gonçalves -- a man whose murderous PR would make even Joey Goebbels burst with admiration -- paints the squatters as recidivist monarchists in league with the elderly baron. This is false. It is true, however, that the squatters have rejected the republic. When Gonçalves arranges for a shipment of English rifles and ammunition to Canudos he conveniently exposes the "monarchists" as traitors to the fledgling republic and publishes accordingly. Because of this deft bit of disinformation, the republicans and their armies and most of the public do not know that Canudos is in fact a religious settlement with eschatological leanings. Even during the last prolonged campaign against Canudos the commanding general still believes that the jagunços have monarchist tendencies and that English officers are advising them. Three times the republic sends the army against Canudos and loses ignominiously, thanks to the insurgents' ruthless guerrilla tactics. The fourth campaign succeeds.

Vargas Llosa spends the first 200 pages alone establishing his characters. They are a rogue’s gallery, too, and include the “nearsighted journalist,” a character based on Euclides Da Cunha himself; the elderly Baron Canabrava, head of the (real) ousted monarchists; the newspaper owner and lethal republican, Gonçalves; Galileo Gall, a Scottish socialist, whose over-zealousness and lack of self-examination bring him to an ugly pass; the ex-slave, Big João, who ruthlessly slices his mistress to bits during a backlands excursion; Abbot João, formerly Satan João, Pajeú, Pedrão, and other murderous bandits turned upstanding Christians; the Vilanova brothers, itinerant merchants; the filicide Maria Quadrado; the Lion of Natuba, a literate, deformed young man who serves as the Counselor's scribe; and the entire Brazilian army -- a Tolstoyan dramatis personae if ever there was one.

On the whole, the novel is an admirable endeavor. The narration is straightforward, the diction very flat. There's no fancy vocabulary, except for the occasional Portuguese word, and no structural sleight-of-hand. The writing strives to stay out of its own way, and largely succeeds. But neither does the prose exhibit any real "nicety of style," to use E.M. Forster’s phrase, at least it doesn't come through in this translation. In other words, it doesn't sing. The book’s achievement is in its structure and its length (580 pages). A bit too long for me, the battle scenes especially. As we hurtle toward the end, increasingly there's a tendency toward melodrama. Cliches start popping up: "A chill ran down his spine." Then again there are many beautifully vivid renderings of action and space: the sere landscape, the streets of the impoverished squatter town.

یوسا، نویسنده ی پرویی، یکبار نوبل گرفته، استحقاق بار دومش را هم دارد
چه بگویم و چطور بنویسم از عطشی که به خواندنِ مابقیِ این داستانِ 900 صفحه ای داشتم، آنگاه که هربار کتاب را زمین می گذاشتم. جالب تر اینکه، همزمانِ با این شَعف، عطشی تازه برایِ خریدِ رمان هایِ دیگرِ "یوسا"، گریبان گیر می شد

این رمان را میتوان "جنگی-تاریخی" [هم] دانست اما نَه یک اثرِ جنگی و تاریخیِ صرف، بلکه نگاهی است بسیار عمیق، به فریفتگیِ سریع و باورنکردنیِ مفلوکان به کاریزمایِ مدعیانِ مذهب. نگاهی ست انتقادی به پیاده نظامِ کَم دان و پُرگویِ حرکت هایِ اصلاحیِ آمریکای لاتین در قالبِ داستانی سراپا زندگی و بَس رئال که در وصفش باید گفت: هنرِ کم نظیرِ "توصیفِ بجا، به اندازه و بِه گُزینِ آنچه باید تصویر ساخت"، چیزی که همه جایِ داستان موج می زند

داستانِ حاضر، با دستی به دامنِ استنادِ تاریخی و دستی به آسمانِ خیال نویسنده، شورشی از پابرهنگان و مستصعفانِ منطقه ای دورافتاده در برزیل در آستانه ی قرن 20اُم، به رهبری یک شخصیت کاریزماتیکِ مذهبی را روایت میکند که سخت مغضوبِ کلیسا است. وی همه یِ غمزدگان و بیچارگانِ مناطقِ دور و نزدیک را چون آهنربایی جذب میکند، آن ها که ندانسته مخالف جمهوری خواهی هستند و نخواسته هواخواهِ سلطنت و سلطنت طلبان

یوسا، هر شخصیت را چنان روان به تصویر می کشد که باور نداری صاحب یک قلم، در عینِ زمان، بتواند چنین یَله و آزاد، لابلای سطور و دیالوگ ها، در پَرش از شخصیت یک موجود عجیب الخلقه یِ روستاییِ هواخواهِ شورشیان به شخصیتِ جنتلمنِ استراتژیستِ دسته یِ مخالفِ شورش، چنین ماهرانه رنگ و قلم عوض کند گونه ای که رَدی از اولی بر دومی نماند و تازگیِ دومی، لذت ابرازِ اولی را مخدوش نکند

اگر نخوانده اید این شاهکار را، کارت در جیب، راهی اولین کتاب فروشی شوید که تاخیر جایز نیست، اما

اولا که کتاب را زیر یک هفته بخوانید تا با حفظِ نظمِ ذهنیِ تان، لذتِ مطالعه زائل نگردد
دوم اینکه، اسامی شخصیت ها و شهرهایِ اسپانیولی زبان، اندکی سخت خوان هستنند و به نظر [وَیا] شاید سلیقه یِ این بنده، جُز شخصیت ها و مکان هایِ کلیدی رمان، بقیه اسامی رو، سَرسَری رد شید بهتره. چون که پَس زَنه داره و سرعتِ خوانش رو پایین میاره

این کتاب سومین اثری است از یوسا که به آن امتیاز کامل می‌دهم (با توجه به تجربه‌ای که دارم، احتمالا گفتگو در کاتدرال هم، که هنوز آن را نخوانده‌ام، امتیاز بالایی خواهد گرفت). با این همه، ابدا کتاب بی نقصی نبود. در قیاس با دیگر شاهکارش، سور بز، باید گفت که قلمش در آن یکی خیلی پخته بود. استادانه‌تر بود. می‌دانست اندازه‌ی هر چیز چقدر است. از سرگذشت کاراکتر‌ها چه میزان بنویسد که برای خواننده کافی باشد، چقدر با تکنیک روایتش خواننده را بر سر شوق آورد بدون اینکه اثرش تکنیک زده تلقی شود و یا چه بخشی از داستانش پتانسیل پرداخت بیشتر دارد. جنگ آخر زمان احتمالا طولانی‌ترین اثر یوسا است ولی حفره‌هایی دارد؛ برای مثال از مرشد، که اساسی ‌ترین شخصیت داستان است، کم می‌نویسد. بر خواننده آشکار نمی‌شود که دلیل کاریزمای فوق‌العاده بالای این شخص چیست و چرا تمامی مردم فلک زده شیفته‌ی او می‌شوند و یا برخی توصیفاتش از صحنه‌های نبرد گاهی، البته خیلی کم، تصنعی هستند. با این همه کوچک‌ترین امتیازی از این اثر سترگ کم نمی‌کنم.
اولا که مهندسی و به قولی هندلینگ چنین اثری، با چنین موضوعی و با این میزان تعداد کاراکتر (که لازم به ذکر است که یوسا به طور کلی استاد شخصیت پردازی و خلق کاراکتر است. نباید صرفا بخاطر کم گویی از مرشد ملامت شود. قطعا خود یوسا متوجه این موضوع بوده و صرفا ننوشتن از شخصیتش، گره کوری در داستانش بوده که نتوانست برایش چاره کند) فوق‌العاده کار طاقت فرسایی است و استقامت و هوش بالایی می‌طلبد.
دوما، این کتاب، یک کتاب درس است. پر از درس‌های واقعی، نه چیزی که در نتیجه‌ی تحصیلات آکادمیک کسب می‌کنید. یوسا سیاسی می‌نویسد و بزرگترین درسی که همواره به من گوش زد می‌کند، چند وجهی اندیشیدن و هر چیز را نسبت به بسترش بررسی کردن بود.
به یمن وجود چنین اثری، با دهقانان فلک‌زده بی‌سواد و خرافاتی روزگار گذراندم. آدم‌های مختلف از جناح‌های سیاسی مختلف با عقاید مذهبی مختلف ملاقات کردم و دیدم گلوپاره‌کن، چگونه سر آنهایی که خائن می‌نامید را می‌برید. کتابی بود که وقتی فصلی از آن را به پایان می‌برید، انگشتتان را لای کتاب میگذارید و کتاب را می‌بندید و مدتی به گوشه‌ای خیره می‌شوید و مغزتان مدام مشغول جواب سازی و نظریه پردازی به «چرا ها»یی است که داستان پیش رویتان می‌گذارد. در پایان هم خود یوسا، در مقاله‌ای که به انتهای کتاب ضمیمه شده است، از دشواری‌ها و دلایلش برای نوشتن این رمان می‌نویسد که هم اساسی است هم خواندنی. ترجمه هم که نیاز به معرفی ندارد.
در نهایت هم باید بگویم، هرچند که در طول سفرم فقط خون دیدم و کج‌فهمی و گلو‌های بریده، ولیکن از اینکه مدتی را در «کانودوس» بودم، احساس رضایت کامل دارم.

Hailed as his masterpiece, "War of the End of the World" is... megadense. It churns inside the brain as it desperately tries to make sense of what is inherently senseless. The world of the fanatical Counselor versus the entire republic of Brazil is perhaps one of the most exciting and well-written war novels ever, on the same scale as "Gone With the Wind". There are many flavors here, like in most of his other denser novels, & all of them are exceedingly palatable. There are no "Green House" shenanigans here, nor some strikingly postmodern edge, like that of "Aunt Julia." Again, M.V.L. impresses in his range and ambition-- the scope of this novel truly boggles the mind. Although I still maintain that "Feast of the Goat" is his absolute best, this one is a pretty close second.

چرا این کتاب رو خوندم؟
قاعدتا خوندن کتابی با این حجم به یه تصمیم پیشین نیاز داره. اما خوندن این کتاب یه اتفاق بود برام. از سر بازیگوشی و کنجکاوی همیشگیم برای خوندن جمله‌ی اول رمان‌ها «در» کتاب رو باز کردم و خوندم
:
بلندبالا بود و چندان تکیده که انگار همیشه نیم‌رخش را می‌دیدی. پوستی تیره و اندامی استخوانی داشت، و آتشی هماره در چشمانش می‌سوخت

شمارو نمی‌دونم ولی من که با خوندن همین جملات (و با همین ترجمه‌ی عالی که اگر نبود شاید این جمله‌ها هم این‌قدر قوت پیدا نمی‌کرد) صدای شلپ افتادنم رو تو گرداب این کتاب شنیدم
.

نحوه‌ی روایت کتاب
حدود دو ماه پیش بود. تازه شروع کرده بودم به خوندن این رمان و ذهنم شدیدا درگیر روایت کتاب بود. پنج‌شنبه روزی بود. شال و کلاه کرده بودم تا برم و برای چند ساعتی عین این آدم‌های بی‌غم توی استخر واسه خودم شنا کنم و خوشحال باشم. داشتم خیلی شیک و ورزش‌کاری کرال پشت می‌رفتم و عین سگ به خودم آرامش تزریق می‌کردم و تازه داشتم می‌گفتم پسر این تریپ بی‌غم بودن و آرامش و اینام چیز بدی نیست که یهو همون وسط، الگوی روایت رمان به ذهنم رسید. هیچی دیگه دهنم ناغافل باز شد و یه قلپ مشتی آب رفت تا اون ته نایژه‌هام. شانس آوردم نزدیک دیوار بودم. مفت مفت داشتم تلف می‌شدم

نحوه‌ی روایت کتاب شبیه پله برقی‌ هست. بخش اولی که می‌خونید شبیه جایی هست که دست‌تون رو می‌گذارید. احساس می‌کنید دارید خیلی سریع می‌رید، ولی در حقیقت سرعت واقعی روایت مال جایی هست که پاهاتون رو اون‌جا گذاشتید؛ یعنی بخش بعدی که قراره بخونید. فکر می‌کنید اتفاقی افتاده. اما توی بخش بعدی می‌فهمید که فقط فکر کردید اتفاقی افتاده؛ چون تازه الان هست که داره اتفاقی می‌افته

داشتم برای همین دو خط غرق می‌شدم. به جان خودم اگه غرق می‌شدم خودم حاضر نمی‌شدم تو تشییع جنازه‌ی خودم شرکت کنم

قضیه چی هست؟

رمان حکایت در هم پیچیدن روابط آدم‌هایی هست که بدون هیچ دلیل واضحی انگار جا رو برای هم‌دیگه تنگ کردن. اساس رمان برگرفته از یه واقعه‌ی تاریخی مال صد سال پیش هست؛ جنگ کانودوس. یه جنگ داخلی بین حکومت جمهوری تازه‌تاسیس برزیل و شورشی‌های مذهبی. البته موضوع فراتر از این‌هاست؛ به قول خود یوسا
:
مساله اصلی جنگ آخر زمان تفاوت‌های مذهبی یا سیاسی موجود در برزیل و به طور کلی در امریکای لاتین، نیست، بلکه جدایی و تعارض میان دو جامعه‌ای است که قادر نیستند با یک‌دیگر ارتباط برقرار کنند

توی این عدم امکان برقراری ارتباط همه سهم دارند. سلطنت‌طلب‌های قدیمی که هنوز امیدوار هستند که حکومت جمهوری سقوط کنه، جمهوری‌خواه‌هایی که برای سر به نیست کردن سلطنت‌طلب‌ها ابایی ندارند از زیر پا گذاشتن اصول جمهوری‌خواهی‌شون، آنارشیستی که خیال می‌کنه برزیل هم اروپاست و میشه با همون اقتضائات توی این فضا سر کرد، ملاک‌های قدیمی یک بوم و دو هوا که چاره‌ای ندارند که برای حفظ سرمایه‌شون یکی به نعل بزنند، یکی به میخ و این وسط جماعت ژنده‌پوشی که جمهوری رو دجال زمان می‌دونند و باهاش سر سازگاری ندارند.
یوسا توی تصویر کردن این بلبشو بی‌نظیر بوده؛ توی ترسیم زد و بندها و بازی‌های پنهانی؛ توی تجسم بخشیدن به «گاهی اقتضا می‌کنه اون‌جوری، گاهی اقتضا می‌کنه این‌جوری»

[جمله‌ی داخل گیومه یکی از دیالوگ‌های مغفول مونده‌ی فیلم «مکس» هست. تو اون فیلم یکی از کاندیداهای انتخاباتی برای افزایش رای‌هاش می‌خواد بره سمت یه مطرب کوچه‌بازاری که حسابی برای خودش طرفدار جمع کرده. وقتی مشاورش ازش می پرسه که آخه قربان این یارو که کلا سیستمش با سیستم ما فرق می‌کنه، کاندیدا یه نگاه عاقل اندر سفیه به مشاور می‌کنه و میگه: اون‌موقع اقتضا می‌کرد اون‌جوری، الان اقتضا می‌کنه این‌جوری...]

توضیح بیشتر از این جاهای جذاب رمان رو لو میده. هرچند که این رمان اون‌قدر خرده روایت دوس‌داشتنی و صدالبته گاهی هول‌ناک داره که حتی از دست دادن نقاط عطف رمان هم اون رو از قابلیت‌هاش خالی نمی‌کنه

پاشنه‌ی آشیل کتاب
ظاهرا چاره‌ای نیست که بپذیریم یوسا قلم توانمندی برای توصیف صحنه‌های پرازدحام نبرد نداره. یوسا توی نبرد اول از استراتژی تولستویی برای شرح نبرد استفاده می‌کنه. یعنی راوی رو می‌بره روی کوه یا تپه‌ی مشرف به صحنه‌ی نبرد تا از اون‌جا گزارش صحنه رو بده. تا این‌جای کار چندان بد از آب در نیومده. اما مخصوصا توی دو تا نبرد اول، توصیف نزدیک صحنه‌های نبرد به قوت صحنه‌های نبرد جنگ و صلح نبوده و این ذاتا تقصیر یوسا نیست. کسی می‌تونه صحنه‌های نبرد این‌شکلی رو از جون و دل بنویسه که با ذره ذره‌ی وجودش چنین نبردهایی رو تجربه کرده باشه؛ کسی مثل خود تولستوی
اما توی تحلیل نهایی همین که کسی توصیف صحنه‌های نبرد رو طوری بنویسه که توی ذهن مخاطبش اون رو وادار کنه به مقایسه با صحنه‌های نبرد جنگ و صلح خودش یعنی این‌که نویسنده‌ی بزرگی هست

این نقشه رو ذخیره کنید توی سیستم‌تون. نقشه‌ی شهرهای تاثیرگذار توی جنگ کانودوس بوده. توی دویست صفحه‌ی اول خیلی کمک می‌کنه به درک موقعیت‌های مختلف رمان. البته فهمیدن رمان نیازی به این نقشه نداره. اما خیلی جذاب‌ترش می‌کنه. بعد از دویست صفحه هم که دیگه نقشه کامل میره توی ذهن‌

مخلص کلام
رمان رمان «معظمی» هست. از همون صفحه‌های اول رمان می‌دونید که دارید یه کار «بزرگ» رو می‌خونید. توصیه‌ی این‌جور کتاب‌ها بیشتر به شوخی شبیهه. یکی از «بهترین» رمان‌های زندگی‌تون با یه ترجمه‌ی «موندگار» منتظر شماست

حرب نهاية العالم

انتبهت إلى أنني في كل مرة أكتب فيها مراجعة لإحدى روايات يوسا، استفتح بالحديث عن فن الرواية وعظمته، هذا ما يفعله بنا يوسا في كل مرة، يأخذنا إلى الأعالي كصقر، ولا يعيدنا إلى الأرض إلا دائخين، نحاول أن نفهم كيف خضنا هذه الرحلة؟ ما هي الأداة التي استخدمها يوسا !! ما هذا الفن؟ كيف لا يجيده إلا القلة؟ ولكني - رغم أن هذه الرواية ذروة يوسا - لن أكتب عن هذا، من يريد أن يقرأ، يمكنه أن يعود إلى مراجعتي لحلم السلتي، ليجد في مقدمتها كلامي حول فن الرواية وقيمته.

ما الذي فعله يوسا في هذه الرواية؟ ذات ما يفعله في كل رواية، يجذب من الهامش حدثاً ما، يبدو صغيراً جداً، لا يمكن تمييزه على صفحة التاريخ الضخمة والمنقوشة بكل شيء، ثم يسلط عليه عدسته المكبرة، فيكبر هذا الحدث، يتحول إلى مركز الصفحة، بحيث أننا ولأيام نحتجز في تلك السطور الصغيرة، نشعر وكأنها هي تاريخ العالم، نمتلئ بكل التفاصيل الدقيقة التي ينثرها بسخاء، فيوسا روائي سخي، يمكنك أن تتخيله وهو يكتب، يحترق بكل ما عرفه وما خبره، يقرأ ويبحث، ثم يكتب في ثلث الليل، ملفوفاً بالكلمات، والصور، والوثائق، والرؤى، فينفق بسخاء، عواطفه، وأفكاره، وأحداثه، نعم إنها أحداثه، صحيح أنها حدثت قبل حتى أن يولد، ولكنه هو من أزال عنها غبار التاريخ، فلذا هو من يمتلكها، هو من أعادها للحياة.

نقرأ ما كتبه يوسا بسخاء فنتأثر، تتحول حرب كانودوس من حرب دينية هامشية في برازيل القرن التاسع عشر، إلى الصورة الكاملة لكل حركة دينية، بنبيها وحوارييها ومؤمنيها وأشرارها، هكذا نتابع المرشد في جولاته، ونتابع كيف يقلب لصوص وقطاع طرق باهيا إلى مؤمنين مستعدين لنبذ كل شيء في سبيل الإله، نتابع كيف يهزمون الحملات العسكرية المتتالية، نتابع الساسة الفاسدين، نتابع الثوري الإيرلندي والذي يبحث عن أحلامه في كانودوس، نتابع كل شيء من البداية إلى النهاية.

لا أدري لماذا نقلني حصار كانودوس إلى حصار الدرعية، يا للتشابهات بينهما.

ولكن من يظن وهو ينتهي من (حرب نهاية العالم) أنه قرأ رواية تاريخية فهو مخطئ، لقد أفلتت منه فلسفة يوسا الساخرة، التلطيخية، فكل شخص في الرواية قام يوسا بتلطيخه، فالمرشد يموت وهو يفرغ أمعائه ومدينته التي بشر بها تهدم فوق رؤوس أتباعه، ولا ملائكة تجيء لإنقاذهم، ويوسا بخبثه يجعل الأتباع يتذوقون ما جادت به أمعاء المرشد، الصغير المبارك هو من يخون معلمه في النهاية ويقدم جسده للجمهورية، الثائر غاليليو غال يموت على مشارف كانودوس بسبب اغتصابه زوجة دليل، يا لها من نهاية مخزية !! البارون دي كانابرافا الذي يفترض به أن يمثل العقل في هذه الرواية، يغتصب خادمته أمام عيني زوجته المجنونة، القائد العسكري البرازيلي أنتونيو موريرا تنتهي مغامراته العسكرية على أبواب كانودوس وتسحق فرقته السابعة، الجميع في هذه الرواية يتلطخون، وكأن يوسا الذي كتب بكل تلك الفخامة والعظمة، ينزع بطريقة مواربة هذه العظمة، ويقدم لنا العالم كما هو ملطخ، قبيح، كل ما يدور فيه هو غباء تام، وسوء فهم فظيع.

ملحمة يوسا التي لا أدري لماذا تأخرت ترجمتها العربية حتى هذا العام!
إذا كانت " مئة عام من العزلة " هي مفخرة ماركيز فلا بد أن تكون هذه الرواية هي ما يتباهى بها يوسا. الرواية على مستوى سردي عظيم و محترف لأبعد درجةو ذلك لأن ال 700 صفحة مليئة بالأحداث التي لم تختل في أي فصل و من غير ملل و تمضي الرواية من فم إلى آخر في تقاطع هندسي فظيع. الرواية وضع فيها يوسا كل مخاوفه و فلسفته و خبراته فالرواية بشكل عام تتحدث عن كاهن خارج على الكنيس�� يحظى بكثير من الأتباع من كل الفئات الاجتماعية و بما أن الملكية قد غادرت على غير رغبة من الاقطاعيين و جاء وقت الجمهورية تمضي الرواية نحو كثير من الصدامات و كثير من العداوات و الصداقات المفاجئة و قليل من الجنس - على غير عادة يوسا - و أسلوب يوسا الجذاب علاوةً على كل ذلك.

At the end of the nineteenth century a rebellion broke out in the back lands of Bahia, Brazil.

The rebels who are poor people, bandits, people of uncertain ethnicity, former slaves, impoverished settlers, the disabled, all inspired by a charismatic religious leader and thoroughly alienated from the new Republic, were inspired by the hope that Dom Sebastian, the Portuguese King who had died in Morocco in the sixteenth century, would like a King Arthur return to rule over them, were eventually utterly crushed by the army after years of resistance sorry about the spoiler, if you're still following this in the papers.

The novel tracks the rebellion from its inception to its aftermath through a variety of point of view characters. One is a revolutionary and phrenologist, another a rationalist journalist (based on an actual gentlemen who wrote an account of the war) symbolically his glasses are broken early in the preceedings, thus Vargas Llosa symbolically dismisses his ambivalent account and gets on with his own, the journalist becomes dependant on others to get about, the modern man reduced to being led about by the superstitious, backwards looking people who like players of lotteries can only imagine that their lives could be improved by the personal direct intervention of God God, if capable of doing so, is not minded to intervene however . The characters then allow the conflict to be seen as a conflict, or at least the testing ground of the different types of ideas (scientific, pseudo-scientific, pre-scientific) common in the world of the late nineteenth century. What Vargo Llosa shows us is that eventually, once convinced of the seriousness of the rebellion in the back of beyond by the wretched of the earth, the forces of the state are capable of deploying sufficient mechanised violence to achieve victory.

My abiding memory, aside from the poverty, was a sense of how the conflict transformed the lives of the characters and particularly how despite the fantastical and deeply religious motivations of the rebels, their lives seemed to be freer, even devoted to building a city in the badlands, than the formal, claustrophobic,hierarchical world of coastal Brazil. The actual rebellion and the literary responses to it together clock up a good four or five references in Edwin Williamsons The Penguin History of Latin America, though at no point does he discuss the politics of a Spanish American writer addressing himself to an event in Brazilian History, and in doing so he chose not to write about the Tupac Amaru II rising in mid 18th century Peru. Yet as a novel in the context of the development of Latin America it makes a very strong statement - the vision of the future preferred by the elite will be victorious, all other concerns will be ignored however legitimate, the scream of the defeated will be recorded, but there will be no discussion and no concessions: Order and Progress all please stand for the nation anthem and waving of the flag !

There are books at which we arrive to too soon, books that are forced down our throats by well meaning instructors and friends, books that are passed on with loving grace and books that are clung to relentlessly for years. There are books of which we hear much yet never open and obscure books that catch our eye in a musty booksellers that swiftly become those items with which to cudgel our own friends. There are books that you forget minutes after reading and books that haunt your steps for years like a ghost of memory. Those are the books which I am always in search of, the always rare tomes that live on inside of you long after the final page is turned and inform your worldview for years, either consciously or not. Without realizing the import at the time, picking this lengthy read from atop my ever-growing to-read pile was the defining moment of my entire year.

Mario Vargas Llosa is an author of whom I had heard much, yet, for one ill-conceived reason or another, had never picked up any of his works and read them. All throughout my hodgepodge affair with Latin American authors there he has sat, waiting patiently as I endured the brilliant-but-meandering Garcia Marquez, the imaginative-yet-overblown Allende, the deliberately obtuse Bolano. Finally on a cold morning in February, as I cursed at my stacks of books purchased in haste and then left to linger for months, the spirit of inspiration that first moved me to acquire this structurally unsound stack of literature lit once more upon my shoulder and whispered at me to pick that beautiful red cover featured above from the neglected horde. Nothing has been the same since.

It is remarkably easy to dive deep into the world of post-Monarchist Brazil, populated by a vast coterie of the wretched and the ignorant and torn apart by the shifting winds of change and the turning of one epoch to another. Brazil has won its freedom from the monarchs of Portugal and is constructing its first civil government- with all the implements of the State which we take for granted now: marriage available for the first time outside of a church, a census to better know the nascent country's people and its needs, taxes to be paid for the creation of new roads and railways to better connect this country of nigh unfathomable size. Things that we, little more than a century later, take for granted (though we still seem to be having some delay with that whole Civil Marriage thing).

Not so in turn-of-the-century Bahia, a state midway along the coast known today primarily for its vast cacao plantations. In the backlands of this state wanders a man known as The Counselor preaching the Gospels to the illiterate, rebuilding churches fallen into disrepair and, everywhere he walks, showing love and acceptance for the most miserable and misshapen (both physically and mentally), some for the first time in their lives. He builds quite a dedicated following out of the dregs of society, winning over cangaceros (bandits), merchants, beggars and mutants as he travels for many years around the interior. Until one day he is shown a proclamation from the Republic informing the populace that civil marriage is now allowed and a census is to be taken regularly. Seeing this as a full assault on the church to which he is beholden he realizes that the faith is under assault by this new monster called the Republic, who must surely be the Antichrist in disguise. There is nothing to be done but to find some land and build a true city of god where his followers may live in peace. The fledgling state sees this as an open revolt to be quashed immediately lest other regions follow the example of the faithful of Canudos and proceeds to send out that true Antichrist, the Brazilian Army to ruthlessly put down this secessionist movement.

And so begins the tumultuous The War of the End of the World, based on true events but given poetic timbre by Vargas Llosa's pen. A cast of hundreds filters through, all with their histories and viewpoints, none purely evil and all conflicted by the demands this new age makes upon them. The beauty of Vargas Llosa's writing really comes through here as each, rebel and soldier, takes their minute upon the stage and illuminates very clearly the trying nature of these times. The doomed European idealist Gallileo Gall who believes quite fervently in both the ideal of Revolution and the disproved tenets of phrenology. The Dwarf, a member of a traveling circus fallen upon hard times. The near-sighted Journalist who plays the role of a faithless Job here, plagued by misfortune again and again. The retired cangacero Pajeu who has found grace in the Counselor's teachings and makes up for his bloody past by becoming a guerilla leader against the Army expeditions that assault Canudos again and again. The cast is vast but, so consummate is Vargas Llosa's skill, it never becomes overwhelming or difficult to keep straight.

Like the better-known Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa creates a whole world around the blessed miscreants in Canudos, but also improves upon it by pulling back on the scope of his ambitions and focusing instead on just those events that are germane to the story at hand. Where Garcia Marquez can tend to become overblown and distracted by whatever thoughts pass through his, admittedly admirable, head, Vargas Llosa uses his digressions to better tie his story together. This is performed so perfectly that when, near the end of the tale, a character says that "Canudos isn't a story; it's a tree of stories" you can't help but nod your head in agreement and marvel at Vargas Llosa's deft skill in crafting such an impeccable novel. Having been awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature one can only hope that this brings his works to a new generation of bibliophiles for he is, without a doubt, one of the finest wordsmiths that I have ever had the privilege of reading.

When I was at High School I had an English teacher who was a fan of Dostoevsky, who told me that some people learned Russian solely to read Dostoevsky in the original. Sometimes I think it would be worth learning Spanish to read MVL in the original. This is the sixth of his novels that I’ve read and the third that I have rated with five stars. I understand that MVL himself considers this epic novel as his greatest achievement, (and bear in mind that he was awarded a Nobel Prize).

The novel is based on historical events in north-east Brazil at the end of the 19th century, namely “The War of Canudos” of which I had previously been unaware. I don’t know how closely the novel follows the real story, but MVL is in the business of writing fiction, and I read it in that spirit. In real life, the basics seem to be that a wandering mystic and prophet called Antônio Conselheiro (“The Counsellor”) gradually collected more and more followers over a period of years, and he and his disciples eventually settled, occupying land at a place called Canudos in the State of Bahia (the land belonged to a local aristocrat). Unlike many of the modern leaders of religious cults, The Counsellor seems to have been a genuine ascetic. People flocked to Canudos, which was organised as a society of subsistence peasants. There was no money, and food and work was shared amongst the inhabitants. The Brazilian army launched no less than 4 expeditions against Canudos. The first three were defeated, and the people of Canudos were only overrun by the fourth after prolonged and ferocious resistance.

The Counsellor is of course at the centre of the novel, but the story is not told through him in the first person. He is a distant, mysterious figure, in the novel always observed by others. The reader is instead presented with an immense tapestry of different characters, with numerous sub-plots creating a vivid picture of time and place. On one level, the novel gives us a spectacular re-telling of the war. On another, it seems to me that MVL uses the text to raise all sorts of themes. A major theme is that of idealism, and fanaticism. Canudos represents a rejection of modernity, especially the secular Brazilian Republic established after the overthrow of the monarchy a few years beforehand. The Counsellor rejects the introduction of civil marriage, the replacement of tithes by taxes, even the metric system. The Counsellor’s opposite in ideology, but his counterpart in fanaticism, is Colonel Moreira César, commander of one of the expeditions against Canudos, an extreme nationalist and a believer in progress and industrialisation. In the rest of Brazil, the people of Canudos are portrayed as the agents of reactionary monarchists and British imperialists. Bewildered by how the Brazilian army is routed by a collection of half-starved peasants, newspapers claim that the “rebels” are armed and trained by British officers. (“Fake News” is not that new a phenomenon). The book also features a Scottish anarchist, who fetches up in the area following a shipwreck and who goes by the nom de guerre of Galileo Gall. Equally fervent in his beliefs, he sees Canudos as the rejection of class oppression and the expression of the peasants’ desire for a just society, but his presence is useful to the nationalists who are trying to point to British influence.

At one point, the local aristocrat is addressed by one of the Counsellor’s principal disciples:

“The baron recognised that tone of voice; it was that of the Capuchin Fathers of the Sacred Missions, that of the sanctimonious wandering sects who made pilgrimages to Monte Santo, that of Moreira César, that of Galileo Gall. The tone of absolute certainty, he thought, the tone of those who are never assailed by doubts.”

The Counsellor’s closest disciples are mostly people who have committed horrendous crimes. One, an ex-bandit, even earned the name “Satan João” because of his limitless cruelty – in Canudos he becomes “Abbot João”. Do the disciples come to the Counsellor from a desire to expiate their sins, or are they simply responding to someone who treats them with love and respect? Have they truly reformed as much as it would first appear? What is the source of the extreme devotion displayed by so many thousands? The reader is left to draw his or her own conclusions.

I should say that there is a great deal of cruelty in the book. The Counsellor’s followers regard the soldiers as agents of the Devil. The soldiers view the people of Canudos as traitors. Prisoners have their throats slit, corpses are mutilated, and there are many other atrocities. The slavish devotion towards the Counsellor is also uncomfortable to read at times. I have to admit the novel has put a couple of images into my head that I would rather weren’t there, and which I hope I can forget.

Overall though, an absolute masterpiece.

خلاصه داستان:

یوسای بزرگ در این کتاب واقعه‌ای تلخ و خونین بار در اواخر قرن نوزدهم میلادی در کشور برزیل رو روایت می‌کنه. نظام سلطنتی سرنگون شده و حکومت جمهوری نوپایی شکل می‌گیره. اما این اتفاق برای همه جامعه خوشایند نیست. یک مبلغ مذهبی به نام آنتونیو کونسولیرو که در کتاب ما او رو بیشتر با عنوان مرشد می‌خوانیم، نظام جدید رو ضدمسیح می‌دونه و با سفر به نقاط مختلف برزیل مواضع خودش رو بیان می‌کنه و مخالفت خودش رو از این طریق ابراز می‌کنه.. مرشد در سخنان خودش نوید این رو میده که به زودی آخر زمان تشکیل میشه و همه باید آماده باشند. اندک اندک جمع مستان می‌رسد و مرشد هواداران جان برکف زیادی جذب می‌کنه. قاتلان، بچه دزدها، راهزنان، بعضی کشیش‌ها و هر کسی که به زعم خودش فراموش شده و دیده نمیشه محو شخصیت کاریزماتیک مرشد و کلام نافذ او می‌شه. این جماعت در کانودوس جمع می‌شند و گرد هم میان.نظام جمهوری تصمیم می‌گیره به جنگ این گروه بره و نابودشون کنه و زمین رو از وجود مرشد و مریدانش پاک کنه. این جنگ در چهار مرحله انجام میشه. شرح نبردهای چندگانه نظام جدید و مرشد بدنه اصلی داستان رو تشکیل میده. اما خرده روایت‌ها و شاخ و برگ‌های مختلفی در داستان وجود داره که رنگ و لعاب جذابی و به پیشبرد داستان می‌بخشه و باعث میشه صفحات زیاد شرح جنگ و نبرد تعدیل بشه. مثلا شخصیتی به نام گال با پیشنهاد روزنامه نگاری تصمیم می‌گیره سلاح قاچاق کنه و به دست معترضان برسونه.خود این شاخه از داستان جذابیت و فراز و فرود و اتفاقات مختلفی رو در برمیگیره. یا خبرنگار نزدیک بین که یکی دیگه از شخصیت‌های داستان هست و در بیشتر قسمت‌های ماجرا حضور داره و نقش او و اقدامات و تصمیماتی که میگیره جذاب و خواندنی است. برادران ویلانوا هم در داستان حضور دارند که اسم این دو منو یاد تیتو ویلانوا سرمربی فقید بارسا می‌انداخت که متاسفانه در سال 2014 به دلیل سرطان درگذشت.روح تیتوی عزیز شاد و امیدوارم از آسمان‌ها امسال شاهد سه گانه گرفتن بارسای عزیز باشه...

در مورد داستان:

جنگ آخر زمان مثل اکثر کارهای یوسا اثر سخت خوانی بود اما جذابیت‌های خاص خودش رو داشت. تقریبا صد، صد و پنجاه صفحه ابتدایی گیج بودم که به مرور این گیجی برطرف شد.این اتفاقی ناآشنا در مواجهه با آثار یوسا برام نبود و چون می‌دونستم یک مساله روتین در آثار اوست، به خوبی باهاش کنار اومدم. وقتی داستان رو می‌خوندم مدام این حس رو دریافت می‌کردم که دارم یک اثر قوی مستحکم از یک نویسنده مسلط کاربلد می‌خونم. داستان از نظر زمان روایت هم پس و پیش میشه اما خیلی ناواضح نیست و از این طریق مشکل خاصی رو ایجاد نمی‌کنه. داستان از شخصیت های زیادی با اسامی سخت برزیلی تشکیل شده که زمان می‌بره آدم باهاشون آشنا بشه. یوسا پس از تحقیقات و مطالعات گسترده در مورد جنگ داخلی کانودوس تصمیم می‌گیره این کتاب رو بنویسه و خودش این اثرش رو بلندپروازانه ترین کار خودش می‌دونه. در طی این نبرد و جنگ چهار مرحله ای متاسفانه حدود چهل هزار نفر کشته میشند. یکی از غم انگیزترین و البته قابل تامل ترین نکته‌ها در مورد این جنگ داخلی، فقدان گفت‌وگو است. دقیقا هر دو طرف ماجرا هیچ ارتباطی با هم برقرار نمی‌کنند. هیچ مسیری رو باز نمیذارن و تمامی درها رو از ابتدای راه به روی همدیگه می‌بندند.همین قضیه به نظرم ضربه مهلکی میزنه و شد آنچه نباید میشد و یک قتل عام گسترده خروجی این تصمیم پرهزینه و اشتباه میشه. هر دو طرف درگیر جنگ فقط به یک چیز فکر می‌کردند و اون هم نابودی کامل طرف مقابل بود. زمانی که سرهنگ سزار وارد عملیات میشه که یکی از نظامیان چیره دست و خبره اون زمان بوده، یکی از تئوری های او اینه که کار، کار انگلیسی‌هاست! و نقش دشمن رو در ایجاد و تشکیل این فتنه بسیار پررنگ می‌دونه!! خود این قضیه و طرز فکر جدای از درستی یا نادرستی‌اش برای افرادی که این مسائل رو فقط مختص کشور ما می‌دونند، به نظرم می‌تونه قابل توجه و تامل باشه. یوسا در این اثر روایت خودش رو با بی طرفی نوشته.که به نظرم نوشتن نهصد صفحه و حفظ این روند کار دشواری است و البته ارزشمند.تعداد بالای صفحات شرح نبرد و جنگ خوندنش برای من سخت بود.نمیخوام بگم حوصله بر، نه، ولی جذابیت زیادی نداشت هر چند خالی از لطف نبود.این رو نمیتونم به عنوان ایراد حساب کنم چون بیشتر بحث سلیقه مطرحه. توی بعضی ریویوها دیدم این قسمت ها رو با جنگ و صلح تولستوی مقایسه کردند که برام جالب بود! شاید اگر رهبرهای سیاسی و دینی این کتاب رو بخونند،قسمتی که غبطه بخورند، این امرپذیری بینظیر یاران مرشد از اوست. به نظرم هر رهبری همچین اتفاقی رو به عنوان یک دلخواه خودش مدنظر داره. یاران مرشد ایمانی قلبی و آهنین به او پیدا کرده بودند و روحا و جسما در اختیار او بودند و تا آخرین نفس هم جنگیدند. سال 2010 که یوسا نوبل گرفت در بخشی از متن نوشته شده : برای نمایش ساختار قدرت و تصویرهای بُرّنده از مقاومت‌ها، شورش‌ها و شکست‌های فردی... این جمله رو شما با تمام وجودتون در جنگ اخرزمان حس می‌کنید.درسته یک روایت ادبی با درون مایه تاریخ و سیاست عنصر پرتکراری در کارهای یوساست ولی جنگ آخر زمان به خوبی و در سطح کمال این جمله رو به مخاطب اثبات می‌کنه. اگر با داستانهایی با این مضامین علاقه دارید، یوسا در صدر لیست پیشنهادی مطالعه قرار بدید، به نظرم ضرر نخواهید کرد.
جنگ آخر زمان کتابی بود بسیار جذاب و خواندنی که با یک روایت پرفراز و نشیب باعث شده بود در پی این فرازها و نشیب‌ها ما با داستان همراه بشیم. یوسا نویسنده مورد علاقمه و این چندمین کاری بود که از او میخوندم و بسیار خوشحالم به سنت هر ساله، اولین کتاب سال جدید رو اختصاص دادم به اثری که مدتها قصد و میل خوندنش رو دارم. البته این نکته رو هم اضافه کنم که به نظرم داستان می‌تونست در صفحات کمتری جمع و جور بشه . انتهای این نوشته رو میخوام به پاراگراف ابتدایی کتاب اختصاص بدم که توصیف به غایت زیبایی در مورد مرشد بود.این پاراگراف ابتدایی رفت کنار دو کتابی که پیش از این، پاراگراف‌های ابتداییشون رو بسیار دوست داشتم.. کتاب با این جملات آغاز میشه:

بلندبالا بود و چندان تکیده که انگار همیشه نیمرخش را می‌دیدی. پوستی تیره و اندامی استخوانی داشت، و آتشی هماره در چشمانش می‌سوخت. صندل شبانان را به پا داشت و شولای کبودرنگی که پیکرش را می‌پوشانید یادآور ردای مبلغانی بود که گاه و بی‌گاه به دهکده‌های پرت افتاده صحرا سر می‌زند تا بر خیل کودکان نو زاد نام بگذارد و زنان و مردان را که با هم زندگی می‌کردند به عقد هم درآورند. پی بردن به سن و سال او، ایل و تبارش و ماجرای زندگی‌اش ناممکن بود، اما در خلق و خوی آرام، رفتار بی‌تکلف و وقار برهم نخوردنی‌اش چیزی بود که حتی از آن که موعظه خود را آغاز کند، مردم را به سویش می‌کشاند.

پ.ن: دو سه شب پیش فیلم دختری با سوزن رو دیدم که خیلی دوست داشتم.شاید بپرسید چه ربطی به کتاب داشت ؟درست حدس زدید؛هیچ ربطی! فقط دوست داشتم اینجا هم بهش اشاره کنم.همین :)....

بعض الأعمال تكون كقطعة فنية ساحرة تغار عليها، فتخاف أن لا يتم تقديرها بالشكل الكافي فتخبئه من الأخرين ولا ترشحه لاحد خوفًا من أن لا يتم تقديره، وحينها قد تشعر أنها إساءة لك وهذا ما فعلته ملحمة "حرب نهاية العالم" ليوسا، فهذا العمل الوثائقي لحرب أهلية قي أقصي القارة اللاتينية عند البرازيل، مرهق لأبعد حد فيكفي القول أن التعريف بالشخصيات فقط وخلفيتهم كان في أول ثلاثمائة صفحة، الأحداث لن تبدأ قبل المنتصف في رواية تتعدي التسعمائة صفحة، والشخصيات كثيرة جدًا ولكل حزب شخصياته ولذلك كنت أتبع خطواتي في القراءة بالورقة والقلم حتي لا يصيبني التشتت.

هذا العمل هو أيقونة يوسا الخالدة من بين أعماله الكثيرة، قد لا يكون الأفضل في نظر الكثيرين لكنه بالتأكيد الأكثر تكاملًا وخير دليل على موهبة يوسا العبقرية في السرد وتطور الشخصيات.

يوسا إتخذ من الحرب الأهلية لكاندوس ليرسم لنا كل الحروب المتطرفة التي تقوم بإسم الدين ومريديها في مقابل السياسين الفاسدين الذين يتغذوا على هذة الأفعال ليحكموا سيطرتهم أكثر وبين فكيهم يتم هرس الشعب في النصف ليصبح هو الخاسر الحقيقي.

❞ كانودوس» هي الذريعة التي يستند إليها رجُلُهُم كي يكسب مزيداً من المجد والسطوة: «موريرا سيزار» يسحق مؤامرة ملكية! «موريرا سيزار» ينقذ الجمهورية! أليس هذا خير دليل ممكن على أن الجيش وحده هو القادر على ضمان سلامة الوطن؟ وهكذا يتسلم الجيش السلطة سريعاً، فتعلن «الجمهورية الدكتاتورية») .

عام كامل ومحاولات عديدة لرسم أفكاري وكتابة مراجعة تليق بهذا العمل لكن لا جدوي فيكفي فقط نشر إنطباعي وإنبهاري بهذا العمل الذي عجز قلمي عن كتابة أى شيء يليق به.

يزهو الجميع بالجذور الفكرية والوجدانية التي تتشابك في وشائجَ مُعقَّدةٍ، مُكوِّنةً ما يمكن أن نُطلِقَ عليه في مقاربة لغوية: "مُسلَّمات"، يرفع المرءُ عقيرته للتنديد بالأسوار التي تَحدُّ حرية الرأي، ثم إنْ حاول بعضُهم أن يمسَّ تلك المُسلَّمات، فتلك علامة الخطر، وما يعقب ذلك من ردود فعل لن يكون سوى إطلاق المارد الحقيقي من قمقمه، لأنَّك ببساطة قد سرقتَ من عقله هذا الأمان الزائف، الثقة المطلقة في صواب ما يعتقده وقد يموت في سبيله، ولا أُقصر الحديث هنا عن أي تصنيف فكري، ففي عملنا ذاك، تُحكَى قصة الظلام الذي يحل عقب البحث عن الأمان المسروق، فتلك نهاية العالم الحتمية، فلا ينتهي العالم بالموت ولا بالحروب والنزاعات، بل ينتهي حين يفقد الناس ما يؤمنون به، ويسعَوْن لنصره بكل ما أُوتوا من قوة، حينها يُمسي عالمًا بلا قيمة، ولا تبصر أعينهم ملجأً للاحتماء من ذلك العراء المفاجئ في قسوته وخلائه المَهيب.

غرقتُ في قراءة هذه الرواية مدة زمنية طويلة، ليست من عادتي، فقد أرحتُ نفسي حين قررتُ ترك الكتاب الذي لا يستهويني، والانتهاء فورًا من أي كتاب يلفت نظري، تلك القاعدة البسيطة لم يكسرها أيُّ استثناء طيلة سنوات عدة، ولا أنكر ولهي بالكاتب وتتبع تطوراته الفكرية والسياسية، ولكنّ الغريب في روايتنا أني بعد مائة صفحة الأولى، شعرتُ بالعمى، بلا أية هداية، لم أفهم أصلًا لِمَ يتوجّب عليّ إكمالها، فما هذه الألغاز السياسية؟ وما بالي أنا بالحرب الأهلية البرازيلية في القرن التاسع عشر؟ ولماذا يُغرقني الكاتب في تقديمات لشخوص، تكفي حكاية كل فرد منهم لكتابة رواية كاملة، ونفرتُ منها في عُجالة حمقاء، حتى قد قرأتُ في تلك الفترة عملًا آخر وشاهدت أفلامًا عدة، وفعلتُ كل ما باستطاعتي حتى أنسى ذلك المجلد الأصفر القابع بجوار سريري بعنوان مصيري، ولا أنكر فجاجته، فأن يختار كاتبٌ ما أن تكون عتبة نصه هو الحديث عن نهاية العالم، فهذا يعني أننا على وشك الولوج إلى مداخل عمل ملحمي، على شاكلة الحرب والسلام، وبعد استسلامي إلى الشعور بالفضول والغضب إزاء هذا الاستفزاز الذي لا أملك تفسيرًا له، شرعتُ في إكمال الرواية، بتؤدة وصبر، لأقرأ بالفعل نهاية العالم.

إن المعتاد في أدب يوسا، ذلك السَّمتُ الهادئ في نحت الشخوص، لا يحكي لنا ردود أفعالها قبل أن يسرد التاريخ كله، فمن اليسير عليك أن تسارع إلى إطلاق الحكم على شخصية المرأة العابثة الخائنة، ومن الطبيعي أن يتملّكك النفور والغضب من قاطع طرق يقتل ويسرق ويبقر بطون الحوامل، ولكن ما يحكيه يوسا لا يعني أن نرحم هؤلاء ونغفر لهم جرائمهم، بل بكل بساطة ألّا ننسى آدمية هؤلاء، وفي لحظةٍ ما من الممكن أن نتخذ نفس القرارات الخاطئة كما اتخذها هؤلاء، إن يوسا كاتب شيطاني عابث، يُمزِّق الزهو البشري المتمسك بالفضيلة تمسُّكًا واهيًا، من أين لك أن تملك ذلك اليقين أنك لن تُقدِمَ على فعل مُشابه؟ إذًا أميل إلى وصف يوسا بالأديب الثوري، يثور ضد تصنيفاتنا الحازمة للصواب والخطأ، يضعك على في حلبة القتال كي تصارع حدَّ الموت نفسكَ المتغطرسة بمثاليتها الكاذبة، وفي أثناء هذا التحطيم الهادئ لاعتدادك بنفسك، يبثُّ أفكاره الحديَّة، وهي تعكس المسار الشخصي للكاتب، كاتب جريء لا يتورّع عن الإيمان باليسار الاشتراكي والقتال في سبيله، ثم مقت كاسترو والتنصُّل من أفعاله الشنعاء، لينضمَّ إلى اليمين الوسطي، تأثر العديد من أعمال بارغاس يوسا بوجهة نظر الكاتب حول المجتمع البيروفي وتجاربه الشخصية بوصفه مواطنًا بيروفيًا. غير أنه وسّع مداه بشكل متصاعد، فعالج موضوعات وأفكار مستوحاة من مناطق أخرى من العالم. وأقدم بارغاس يوسا في كثير من مقالاته على نقد الوطنية ضمن مناطق مختلفة من العالم. وشهدت مسيرته تحولًا آخر تمثل في الانتقال من أسلوبٍ ومنهج مرتبط بالحداثة الأدبية إلى أسلوب ما بعد حداثة عابث أحيانًا.



ومثل حال الكثير من كتّاب أمريكا اللاتينية، شهدت مسيرة بارغاس يوسا نشاطًا في مجال السياسة. وعلى الرغم من دعمه أول الأمر لحكومة فيدل كاسترو الثورية الكوبية، فقد تحرر بارغاس يوسا من سحرها لاحقًا بسبب سياساتها، ولا سيما بعد حبس الشاعر الكوبي هيبيرتو باديّا في عام 1971. ترشح إلى الانتخابات الرئاسية البيروفية في عام 1990 مع ائتلاف يمين الوسط الجبهة الديمقراطية، مؤيدًا الإصلاحات الليبرالية الكلاسيكية، لكنه خسر في الانتخابات أمام ألبرتو فوجيموري. وهو الشخص الذي «صاغ العبارة التي جابت أنحاء العالم» في عام 1990، إذ أعلن على التلفزيون المكسيكي أن «المكسيك هي الدكتاتورية المثلى»، ليتحول هذا التصريح إلى قول مأثور خلال العقد التالي.

هذه الخلفية الصارخة للكاتب، وتاريخه الأكاديمي، يُعلنان عن نفسيهما في رواية كما يجب أن تكون الرواية، عملٌ يُبلبل القارئ، ويحكم عليه بالتشتت والحيرة المزعجة، فلا أنسى فصولًا كثيرة جعلتني أفكر في أحداثها كما لو كان مصيري سيترتب على تلك الفصول، هذه القدرة الهائلة على خلق عالم كامل، لا يمكنني الإقرار بإغفال نقطة واحدة، وبات الأمرُ كمن يحاول تصيُّدَ الأخطاء عنوةً، وانتهى أمري بالوقوع في غرام تلك الرواية، عمَّ تحكي إذًا؟
في نهايات القرن التاسع عشر وفي جنوب البرازيل الملكية، تحديدًا في الأراضي الخلفية الريفية، تصرخ الأبواق مناديةً بقيام النظام الجمهوري، وتنحية رموز الحزب الإقطاعي كافةً، وفصل الكنيسة عن الأمور السياسية بشكل نهائي، وإجبار الفلاحين على الزواج المدني والأنظمة المترية الحديثة لقياس الأراضي الزراعية، والكارثة الكبرى تمثلتْ في الزواج المدني وتدخل الدولة الجمهورية الوطنية في إجراءات الدفن والزواج المُقدَّسيْن أيَّما تقديس لدى هؤلاء البسطاء، ثم يسمعون نداء إلغاء الرقّ، وقد قامت القيامة، كيف لنا ألا نكون تحت إمرة ساداتنا؟ ندفع الضرائب؟ وما معنى الزواج المدني سوى أن الجمهورية تجبرنا على ارتكاب الخطيئة؟ وقد مُنِحتْ الحرية إلى الأيادي الخطأ، كانت هذه المرة الأولى التي أطالع فيها شعبًا يخاف من مواجهة الواقع الخالي من القيود والوصايا الملكية والثيوقراطية الخانقة، وكان طبيعيًّا أن يظلوا بعد هذا الحنق في حالة بحثٍ عمّن يرشدهم إلى طريق الخلاص من الأوامر الشيطانية الصادرة من الهيئة الوطنية، وفي ذلك الزمان، ظهرت شخصية "المرشد" أو: " انطونيو فيسنتي مانديس ماسييل".

من المرشد؟ أهو قديس من القديسين؟ حقيقةً لا أفقه الكثير عن التاريخ الكنسي الكاثوليكي في تلك الحقبة بالتحديد، ويوسا نفسه لم يستغرق الرواية في محاولة فهم هوية وأفكار هذا الرجل، وعند اطَّلاعي على الأرشيف الخاص بجرائد تلك الأحداث، لم يستطع الصحافيون التوصل إلى كُنه دعاوى ذلك الرجل، فالكثير من المُدَّعين كانوا يظهرون في الأصقاع الفقيرة لتكوين المجد المسيحي وإحيائه من جديد، اللافت للنظر في شخصية المرشد أو ما خلَّد ذكره، هذا التحول الضخم في نفوس من حوله! لم يستقطب فقط الفقراء المجهولين، بل تاب على يديه المجرمون المُدمِّرون للأراضي الخلفية، أسماء كانت ترتعش أبدان الضباط في الجيش إن ذُكِرتْ، مثل "باجو" و"أبوت جواو" و"جواو الكبير"، لم تكن الطاقة الروحية لذلك الرجل مُقتصرةً على الهداية وصنع طائفة عابدة للقيم المسيحية الكاثوليكية، بل أراد أن يبني دولة يُجابه بها قوى الشيطان المتمثلة في الجمهورية، هذا الشطط الديني الحاشد للأرواح، فجَّر الجميع وجعل لحيواتهم معنىً، جعل يوسا الكابوس المتمثل في الخواء الديني وتوظيف الخطاب الديماغوغي الأجوف، مُتجسّدًا على أرض الواقع، فكأنك تريد الصراخ فيهم جميعًا أن يفيقوا من ذلك الظلام المُتوهَّم، ولكنّك تراقب مصائرهم في استسلام للحتمية التاريخية، هذه الأحداث كلها قد وقعت بالفعل، وقد نتج عنها الاتفاقية الأشهر في تاريخ البرازيل.

احتشد الألوف حول المرشد، وأحاطه الحواريُّون، مُكوِّنين مدينة صغيرة تُدعى "كانودوس"، تأسست مدينة كانودوس في متنوعة عنصرية في ولاية باهيا شمال شرق البرازيل في عام 1893، كان منديس ماسيل يتجول عبر الطرق الخلفية والمناطق الأقل مأهولة بالسكان في البلاد منذ سبعينيات القرن التاسع عشر فصاعدًا، وتبعه مجموعة من المؤيدين المخلصين. مع تضخم أتباعه، أخذ اسم أنطونيو كونسيلهيرو ( أنطونيو المستشار ) وبدأ على نحو متزايد في إزعاج السلطات المحلية، التي رأته تهديدًا لشرعيتها.

في عام 1893، في أعقاب احتجاج على الضرائب ومشاجرة عنيفة مع قوات الشرطة في ماتسيه.
الناس من جميع أنحاء باهيا، بما في ذلك المعدمين، المزارعين، العبيد السابقة ، السكان الأصليين توافدوا للانضمام إليه، وفي غضون سن��ات قليلة، بلغ عدد المستوطنة الوليدة ثلاثين ألف شخص (مما جعلها ثاني أكبر مركز حضري في باهيا بعد سلفادور ) وطورت نشاطًا لتصدير الجلود. 




كمجتمع ، كان يشبه إلى حدٍّ قريب المجتمعات الدينية، مع أنطونيو كونسيلهيرو كعضو رئيسي ومدير. كانت كانودوس مستوطنة دينية شديدة، تحت سيطرة تعصب أنطونيو، لكن على الرغم من تعصبه، لم يتولَّ أي منصب رسمي للسلطة. مورستْ التسوية الملكية المشتركة، وأُلغيتْ العملة الرسمية، وأُبطلت القوانين الوطنية البرازيلية وعمت المشاركة بشكل جماعي في إدارة المدينة. كان كانودوس في جوهره رد فعل ضد الأمة البرازيلية المعاصرة. 

لم تدعم الحكومة المحلية ولا الوطنية المستوطنة في كانودوس. شعرت الحكومة المحلية في باهيا بالضغط من ملاك الأراضي لاتخاذ إجراءات ضد المستوطنة بسبب نقص العمالة الناجم عن الهجرة. أرادت الحكومة البرازيلية الوطنية إرسال حملة عسكرية لتدمير كانودوس باسم الليبرالية والتقدم.  على حد تعبير أحد المؤرخين ، "إن مجرد وجود حركات مستقلة غير خاضعة لسيطرة الدولة يتعارض مع المصلحة الوطنية. وقد دافع كانودوس عن مثل هذا الحكم الذاتي ، وبالتالي كان لا بد من تدميره". 



في هذا المجتمع الوليد الجامع في مزيج متناقض بين الاشتراكية والنظام الديني الصارم، تسود السلطة العملية، فقيمتك بيننا تتحدد وفق الجهد الذي تبذله لإقامة الدولة المُجابهة لشيطنات النظام الجمهوري، وتتقافز شخوض كثيرة مثل "أسد ناتوبا" و"آل فيلانوفا"، يُريكَ الكاتب من خلالهم أجمعين هذا التغير الصارخ والتبعية الرعناء لشخص المرشد، وتقديسه حدَّ الألوهية، وعلى الناحية المقابلة، بعد أن تكوِّن حكمًا سلبيًّا على أتباع المرشد ظانًّا أن ملائكة الجمهورية يستحقون النصر، تجد الأمرَ لا يتهيّد، بل يزداد سوءًا، فإن كان هؤلاء قد أصابهم عمى الحوج والانشداه الديني، فأولئك قد أغرقتهم ألاعيب السياسة والإيمان بالمؤامرات الإنجليزية ضدهم، ولا تفهم، من على حق؟ فعلًا، في أيّ حزبٍ ينبغي على المرء أن يقاتل؟


إن الدماء المُراقة من كلا الفريقين تعمي بصيرتك وتشلّ تفكيرك حين تظن في نفسك الإمكانية لإطلاق الحكم النهائي، ولا أنكر أن شخصية البارون هي التجسيد الروائي لشخص القارئ، الكاتب وضع كل أفكارك في هذا الرجل الذي سمع كل شيئ وشهد الصراع وتضرر من كلا الطرفين، وفقد قدرته بشكل نهائي كي يُكمل صراعه في هذه المخمضة، كنتُ لا أفهم سر هذه الشخصية حين جاء مشهد حواره مع الصحافي قصير البصر، قرأتُ هذا المشهد لأفهم كيفية صوغه مرات عدة، وتملّكني اليقين أنه صورة متكاملة الأبعاد، خريطة لتمزُّق روح الإنسان حين يفقد كل ما يملك وما يؤمن، صاغ الكاتب هذا المشهد كي يضع فكرته الخاصة عن الحرب، وهذه المرة الأولى والأخيرة التي يتدخل فيها يوسا كي يرفع صوته:

"لقد قرأتُ بضعة كتب، وحدّث نفسه: (ولم أحصل على شيءٍ منها) ذلك كان شيئًا اكتشفه في هذه الأشهر الطوال: الثقافة، المعرفة كانت أكاذيب، حملًا ساكنًا، عصابات للعيون. كل تلك القراءة..."

"إن تفسير (كانودوس) لا يكمن في الجنس بل في الجهل."

"قال البارون وهو مدركٌ الازدراء الذي يُعبّر عنه صوته: (كانوا متعصبين. التعصب يجبر الناس على التصرف بتلك الطريقة. إنَّ ما يُفسِّر البطولة خير تفسير ليس الدوافع السامية الجليلة دائمًا. ثم هناك التحامل، ضيق العقل، أشد ما يمكن تصوره من الأفكار غباءً.)"

لم يستطع الكاتب أن ينسى دورَ الحب في خضم هذا الكابوس، بل كان الحب مُحرِّكًا لشخصيات لم يخطر ببالك لوهلة أن من الممكن أن تشعرَ بالحب، أو أن يخالجها مشاعر الرحمة الآدمية أصلًا، وكأن ما ألمّ بهذه الشخصيات المريضة قد حرّرها وطهّرها من محبسها النفسي، كانت تركيبات إنسانية تتبدَّى على نحوٍ غامض، تاركةً وراءها خيوطًا كثيرة لتقودك إلى أشد النقاط ألمًا في نفوسها، وخير مثال على ذلك، الصحافي قصير البصر، لن أنسى ما حييتُ هذه الشخصية، فقد رأيتُ أسوأ وأفضل ما في نفوسنا، ولم أُفاجَأ صراحةً من تلك الفكرة، فمنذ حيرته الأولى حين وقع بين الفريقين، لا يستطيع أن ينكر انتماءه إلى الجمهورية، ولا يُخفي امتعاضه وشفقته على مُريدي المرشد، فقد شهد نهاية عالمه الخاص، وجُوبه بحقيقة خوفه وغضبه على الجميع، كانت تنهشه الرغبة في البقاء، ثم استسلم لعبثية الأحداث، ثم ترأف به تلك الروح الحانية، بدون أي توقُّع، وتظهر له معالم عالم جديد، عالم يخصُّه بمفرده، لا يد أخرى تُحرّكها:

"يحدثه عن الحب، عن اللذة بصوت مُحتدمٍ حماسةً. (إنه أعظم شيء في كل هذا العالم، يا بارون، الشيء الوحيد الأوحد الذي يستطيع المرء به أن يكتشف مقدارًا من السعادة، يستطيع به أن يتعلم ما الذي تعنيه كلمة سعادة.)"

"قال البارون مُحاولًا جرحَ مشاعره: (الحب لا يُطفئ الظمأ.)
ردّ موافقًا: (كلا. لا يطفئه. لكنه يمنح المرءَ قوةً على تحمّله..)"

سرد يوسا الأحداث بتقنية الارتداد تارةً، ثم السرد المتواصل التقليدي تارةً أخرى، وهذه المزاوجة ربما كانت خير أداةٍ لامتزاج أسلوب الكاتب بمحتوى العمل، فلا يمكن تصور سردًا هادئ الوتيرة مع شدة تلك الأحداث، وفي نفس الوقت فإن يوسا ليس من فئة الكُتّاب الذين يمدون أطنابهم على أسس تشويق الأحداث الضحلة؛ ففي الكثير من الأعمال تقرأ العمل فقط في محاولة للتوصل إلى خط نهاية الأحداث، وهذا لا يمنع إنكاري لعامل التشويق في السرد الروائي، ولكنّ الآن نجد الكثير من الجمل الدعائية لشراء كتاب معين "أنك لن تستطيع تركه حتى تصل إلى الصفحة الأخيرة" ولا أدري ما المميز في هذا! فإن كان الحديث عن رواية بوليسية فهذا أمرٌ طبيعيٌّ، لا نقرأ أدب الجريمة لاستخلاص الدروس التاريخية أو الأخلاقية، أما الحديث الروائي، تقبع متعته والكشف عن موهبة كاتبه الحقيقية حين يُجبر القارئ للجلوس وقراءة أسلوب الكاتب، بماذا يشعر؟ وما الذي يريد إيصاله؟ أكان يوسا في تلك الرواية يحكي لنا قصة حرب قد نُشِرتْ تفاصيلها في المراجع التاريخية والصحف؟ أكان يصبُّ غضبه على السلطة الكنسية في أمريكا اللاتينية؟ هل من الممكن أن تكون مظنّة تفرُّد يوسا في الكشف عن موت الشخصية فلان أو تعرض الشخصية الأخرى إلى الأسْر؟ إن هذه الرواية لا تحبس الأنفاس من فرط الإثارة كما تؤكد النيويورك تايمز، ولا تحكي لنا عن مغامرة حالمة بين الشخصيات، بل قد تضجرك تفاصيل الحرب في فصول كثيرة، بل هي رواية مستغلقة، كدروب المفازة ليلًا، تفقد الشعور بالوقت والمكان، وتُشعلكَ غضبًا من الكاتب الذي يُفقدِك قدرتك الوهمية للإمساك بطرفيْ الخطأ والصواب.


هذه المرة الأولى التي أقرأ فيها عملًا ليوسا وليس من ترجمة صالح علماني، في بادئ الأمر اتخذتُ حذري، بيدَ أن الأستاذ أمجد حسين كان يُشعرني بنفسه جانبي لا تقل دهشته عني، أحسستُه قارئًا يشارك تجربته مع قارئ آخر، وأضحكتني تعليقاته البريئة في فقرات كثيرة، فقد قرأ العمل بنهم واضح واستظهر تفاصيل الشخصيات عن ظهر قلب، وكانت ترجمته أمينةً بليغة لم تُشعرني باختلاف عن الراحل صالح علماني-رحمه الله- وأردتُ بشدة مناقشة العمل معه فور انتهائي.

Siamo in Brasile alla fine del XIX° secolo.
La Repubblica è ormai cosa fatta e incede mettendo da parte la Monarchia e il sistema feudale su cui si poggiava compresa la schiavitù tanto preziosa per i proprietari terrieri.

Realtà storica, mito e fantasia del romanziere costituiscono la materia di questo romanzo epico.
Una storia a forma di spirale dove una miriade di personaggi si avvolge intorno alla figura mitica del Consigliere.
Antonio Vicente Mendes Maciel fu chiamato il Consigliere per la capacità di attirare la gente con le sue prediche dai toni apocalittici che rivendicavano una giustizia celeste ai diseredati della terra:

”I sertao sarebbero rinverditi con la pioggia, ci sarebbero stati mais e greggi in abbondanza, tutti avrebbero mangiato e ogni famiglia avrebbe potuto seppellire i propri morti in bare rivestite di velluto. Ma, prima, bisognava sconfiggere l'Anticristo.”

Così Llosa inanella storie di esistenze perdute con la Storia di una nazione sconosciuta a se stessa già stremata dalla peste e dalla siccità.
Straccioni e banditi si trovano a condividere una nuova fede.
Arroccati a Canudos si fanno chiamare jagungos, ossia ribelli, uniti contro il demonio chiamato Repubblica.


Galileo Gall è un anarchico scozzese che spicca perla fisionomia così differente e i bizzarri ragionamenti che fa.
Incuriosito dagli avvenimenti si domanda:

“I simboli religiosi, mitici, dinastici sono gli unici capaci di scuotere l'inerzia di masse sottomesse da secoli alla tirannia superstiziosa della chiesa, e per questo il Consigliere li utilizza?”

Come la Vandea, come gli anabattisti. La storia si ripete con quel suo moto circolare.

La fede magnetizza e il numero di seguaci cresce vertiginosamente:

”cominciavano a essere migliaia diventavano una sola creatura sottomessa e riverente, disposta a dare tutto per colui che era stato capace di giungere fino alla loro prostrazione, alla loro fame e ai loro pidocchi, per infondere speranze e inorgoglirli del loro destino”

Canudos è simbolo dell’illogico, l’irrazionale perché tutto ciò che esce fuori dagli schemi del senso comune non può essere accettato: una tragedia annunciata.

این کلمه وطن یک روز از بین می‌رود. آن وقت مردم به پشت سرشان، به ما نگاه می‌کنند که خودمان را توی مرزها حبس کرده بودیم و سر چند تا خط روی نقشه همدیگر را می‌کشتیم، بعد می‌گویند: این‌ها عجب احمق‌هایی بوده‌اند

در سال‌های پایانی قرن 19 ،چند سال پس از سقوط سلطنت و روی کار آمدن دولت جمهوری در برزیل، انبوهی از افراد به سرکردگی مبلغی مسیحی به نام آنتونیو کونسولیرو ماسی‌یل ملقب به مرشد، شهر کانودوس را در سرزمین‌های دورافتاده‌ی برزیلی باهیا تسخیر و آن روستا را استانی مستقل اعلام می‌کنند. مرشد از نزدیک بودن آخرزمان می‌گوید و جنگ پایانی بین خیر و شر. جانیان سابقه‌دار، طردشدگان و بیچارگان و به طور کل افرادی که خرده حسابی با قانون دارند یا باید حسابشان را با وجدان خودشان روشن کنند، اولین افرادی هستند که تحت تاثیر جاذبه مسیحائی مرشد قرار می‌گیرند و به او می‌پیوندند. حدود 200 صفحه‌ی اول خرده داستان‌های مربوط به زندگی چند نفر از همین مریدان گفته می‌شود که یکی از جذاب‌ترین بخش‌های کتاب را تشکیل داده

حرکتی که در ابتد�� بی اهمیت به نظر می‌رسد رفته رفته به بحرانی ملی تبدیل می‌شود. طرفداران مرشد که همه روستایی‌های بی سواد و فقیرند، جمهوری را شیطان و ضد مسیح می‌نامند و سرشماری را عملی برای شناسایی و قتل عام مسیحیان به حساب می‌آورند.از طرفی جمهوری‌خواهان برای نابودی سلطنت‌طلبان از فرصت استفاده‌ می‌کنند و آن‌ها را متهم می‌کنند که مرشد دست‌پرورده‌ی آن‌ها و امپریالیسم بریتانیا برای انقلاب علیه جمهوری و بازگرداندن سلطنت است. کلیسا نیز در اولین فرصت مرشد را مرتد اعلام می‌کند

از وقایع کانودوس قرار بوده فیلمی به کارگردانی ری گوئرا و با فیلمنامه‌ی ماریو بارگاس یوسا ساخته شود. یوسا بعد از قبول نگارش فیلمنامه، شروع به تحقیق و خواندن درباره‌ی جنگ کانودوس می‌کند در حالی که تا قبلش چیزی از آن جنگ نمی‌دانسته. فیلمنامه نوشته می‌شود و و پروژه به مرحله‌ای پیشرفته می‌رسد اما بنا به دلایلی کمپانی پارامونت تصمیم به لغو پروژه می‌گیرد. اما یوسا با اشتیاق کار را ادامه می‌دهد و به تحقیق و مطالعه ادامه می‌دهد تا از وقایع کانودوس یک کتاب بنویسد. به مدت 4 سال و روزی 12 ساعت روی کتاب کار می‌کند و نسخه‌ی اولیه چیزی در حدود 2000 صفحه از آب در می‌آید

اما چرا یوسا باید رمانی 900 صفحه‌ای درباره یکی از وقایع فراموش شده‌ی تاریخ برزیل بنویسد؟ زمانی که یوسا مشغول تحقیق بوده با کتابی به نام «شورشیان سرزمین‌های دورافتاده» از ایوکلیدس داکونیا آشنا می‌شود که تأثیر زیادی روی او می‌گذارد. داکونیا خبرنگاری بوده که خود به همراه ارتشی‌های سرکوب‌گر شورش به کانودوس می‌رود. این کتاب از این جهت برای یوسا اهمیت داشته که داکونیا تازه بعد از اتمام جنگ متوجه شده که کانودوس یک سوتفاهم بزرگ بوده. که نه توطئه‌ای توسط احزاب درکار بوده و نه دست دولت انگلیس در کار. به نظرم شخصیت «خبرنگار نزدیک بین» نمودی از ایوکلیدس داکونیا است. خبرنگارِ داستان همچون داکونیا شک می‌کند که وقایع کانودوس ارتباطی با واژه‌های آشنای توطئه، شورش، تبانی و براندازی ندارد بلکه چیزی عجیب‌تر و بی‌زمان‌تر در میان است

در واقع کل تراژدی کانودوس در اثر یک سوءتفاهم فاجعه‌بار روی داده بوده. سوتفاهمی برآمده از بینش تعصب آمیز که افراد را از درک تناقض‌های واقعیت با بینش‌های نظری باز می‌دارد. یک نوع «کوریِ چند جانبه» که همیشه بر شانه‌های تاریخ سنگینی می‌کند. تفاوتی نمی‌کند این خشک مغزی برامده از طغیان‌های سوسیالیستی یا آرمانگرایانه باشد و یا نزاع‌های میان محافظه کاران و لیبرال‌ها؛ انگار در تاریخ همیشه راهی برای ناتوانی در پذیرش تفاوت عقیده‌ها پیدا می‌شود که نتیجه‌اش می‌شود جنگ و اختناق و قتل عام. یوسا در نوشته‌ی آخر کتاب می‌گوید وقایع کانودوس آزمایشگاهی کوچک از الگوی چیزی است که همواره در کل کشورهای آمریکای لاتین روی داده است؛ تقسیم جامعه به دو نگرش که درهای گفتگو بین‌شان بسته شده و هیچ یک درک صحیحی از دیگری ندارند

به نظرم نسخه‌ای که یوسا در قالب این کتاب برای دیروز و فرداهای آمریکای لاتین نوشته، امروزه برای تمام کشورهای دنیا قابل تجویز است تا پیش فرض‌های ذهنی‌شان مانع از گفتگو و درک یکدیگر نباشند

کمیته‌ی نوبل در سال 2010 دلیل دریافت این جایزه توسط یوسا را «نقشه نگاری او از قدرت و تصاویر برّان و نافذ او از مقاومت، طغیان و هزیمت فرد» عنوان کرد. این ویژگی‌ها در بالاترین کیفیت در جنگ آخرزمان نمود پیدا کرده‌اند

ملحمة هي، بأحداثها، بشخوصها، بلغتها وبعمقها التاريخي.

ملحمة هي، بأبطالها، بحروبها، بانتصاراتها الساحقة وهزائمها المؤلمة.

تحفة أدبية، بخيالها، بواقعيتها، بإسقاطاتها بإنصافها وتجردها.

ماذا لو انبرى واعظ ديني في زمن تعمّه الفوضى فأعار أسماعه للمهضومين، وأهداهم عصارة حكمته وأشعل فيهم جذوة الإيمان؟

ماذا لو استقطبت تلك الدعوة سواداً عظيماً من البائسين واليائسين، من عتاة المجرمين وجهابذة التجار ورجال الدين اللذين لا يملكون شيئاً ليخسرونه، ومايريدون إلا الحياة في ظل عقيدتهم أو الموت دونها؟

ماذا سيحدث إن أرادت الدولة بقضها وقضيضها أن تسحق هذه الحركة قبل أن يستشري سرطانها؟

ماذا سيحدث إن كانت هناك تناقضات سياسية ومراكز قوى متنافرة، هناك من يريد ركوب الموجة، هناك من ينسج مؤامرة، هناك من ينتوي تجييرها لصالحه، ومن يستغلها لمكايدة خصومه؟

أياً كانت بلدك ومهما كان شكل تاريخك، لا بد أن تلامس الأحداث وتراً-إن لم يكن إوتاراً- في وجدانك.

تنبيه: ليست هذه ملحمة من النوع الممل الذي تمر فيه خمسون صفحة دون حدث يذكر. بل هي كالدوامة التي تجذبك فلا تفلتك.

تنويه: هي رواية تستند إلى أحداث واقعية، لكنها ليست تاريخية جامدة أو سياسية معقدة، بل هي حكاية مسلية أيضاً ولا تخلو من لمسات الواقعية السحرية؛ الأحداث حماسية للغاية.

ملاحظة: الشخصيات مرسومة ببراعة منقطعة النظير. تتراوح بين الغريب والمألوف، لكن أغلبها ممتع ومؤثر. لا أذكر أين رأيت هذا الحشد من الشخصيات الرائعة في كتاب واحد.

خاتمة: رواية حيّة كالحياة نفسها وربما أكبر. لم تغب عن بالي هذه المقطوعة الموسيقية طوال فترة قرائتي للرواية. هي فعلا تصور مزاجها بدقة.

حرب نهاية العالم …..ماريو بارغاس يوسا

إنكم على حالكم لإنه ليس لديكم ما تأكلونه،ليس لديكم أطباء أو دواء، و لان لا أحد يرعاكم ، ولإنكم فقراء.
إن علتكم ليست وجوهكم الكالحة التي بها بقايا مرض الجدري، بل علتكم تسمى الظلم، و أساءة المعاملةو الاستغلال، لا تستسلموا يا أخواني، من أعماق شقائكم ثوروا.

ماريو بارغاس يوسا :واحد من أهم الروائيين في العالم وأكثرهم تطورًا،وأحد أهم عشرة كتاب فازوا بجائزة نوبل،وليس بغريب أن نقول عنه أنه آخر من فاز بها من العظماء،وأحد أهم خمس كتاب لاتين،سطّر اسمه بحروف من نور في تاريخ فن الرواية العظيمة،إضافاته لهذا الفن لا ينكرها إلا جاحد،وملك قلوب ملايين من عشاقه عبر العالم أجمع بمختلف لغاته ومجتمعاته وثقافاته.

هذه الرواية هي ملحمة يوسا الخاصة، وليس بغريب أنه يعتبرها أعظم كتاباته، ففيها نرى وجه آخر ليوسا غير الذي رأيناه، ففي حفلة التيس رأينا تقديم فذ للديكتاتور وأثره على شعبه والمحيطين به وتأثيره عليهم، وفي امتداح الخالة رأينا الشيطان الحي المتمثل في طفل صغير احترف الغواية بفطرة مريبة، وعبر كل رواية ليوسا رأينا وجه خفي للحياة،وصرة مختلفة لها، ولكن هنا نرى يوسا آخر،يوسا المؤرخ والمفكر والثائر،نرى الجمهوري والملكي،نرى المتدين والملحد،نرى التقليدي والمتحرر،لنكتشف في المهاية عالم آخر نجح يوسا في خلقه وجذب القارئ له.

لو لم يكن إسم يوسا على الرواية لاعتقدت أنها رواية لكاتب برازيلي في البداية،جوّ الرواية وأحداثها وشخصياتها برازيلية جدا،وبالتدريج ينقشع الغمام عن خدعة يوسا الكبرى.

كان من المخطط أن يكتب يوسا سيناريو عن أحداث الحرب التي اندلعت في البرازيل في أواخر القرن ال19 معتمدًا على كتاب لصحفي برتغالي، وعندما فشل مشروع السيناريو (وهذا من حسن حظنا) ليسطر من خلال الكتاب روايته تلك وملحمته الأدبية الخاصة،فهو أيضًا يوسا، لا يقل بحال عن تولستوي وماركيز وغيرهم ممن ابتدعوا ملاحمهم الضخمة.

ملحمة يوسا الضخمة والتي ملأها بعشرات الشخصيات،ولكن من هم هؤلاء جميعاً؟ وماذا يفعلون هنا على صفحات هذا الكتاب؟ انهم برازيليو السنوات الأخيرة قبل بداية القرن العشرين: من ناحية أنصار الجمهورية الوليدة قبل سنة واحدة إثر إنقلاب جمهوري أطاح بالملكية ،بما في ذلك الأحزاب المتصارعة وسكان المدن والتجار والمثقفون. ومن ناحية ثانية انصار مسيح جديد أتى ليبشرهم بنهاية لعالمهم في العام 1900 و يزعم انه مبعوث العناية الإلهية لخلاص البشر قبل حلول النهاية، ولا نعرف عن هذا المسيح إلا كاريزما طاغية وعباءة أرجوانية ونحافة شدية وبلاغة تسحر من يسمعه،ومن تلك الأسلحة البسيطة استطاع أن يمتلك قلوب تابعين آمنوا به وببركته وبصدق كلامه،ومعظمهم من حثالة البشر وطبقاتهم الدنيا والمجرمين والبسطاء ،وظل يدعو لسنين طويلة ولا يلتفت له أحد ،ولكن عند اندلاع الجمهورية أقنع الناس أن الجمهورية ماهي إلا مؤامرة كونية ودينية عليهم فالتف حوله الآلاف وسعوا معه لتأسيس مملكة الرب على الأرض.

وعبر عشرات البشر وقصصهم،وكثير من الأحداث المترابطة منها والغير مرتبطة،وتواريخ عديدة،ومعارك تنتهي بسفك كثيف للدماء،أقام يوسا حربه الخاصه ومعركته الخاصة ورمزيته الخاصة،فمن ينتصر،وما تلك القسمة المنتشرة في العالم،هل الجهل والتخلف والاعتقادات المزيفة للدين،هل كل هذا للفقير،في حين يمتلك الغني سلاح وجنود يقتلون به البشر؟
كيف تسير الأمور على هذه الأرض؟ وكيف ستنتهي؟المنطق يقول أن نهاية الرواية هي الغالبة،ولكن ماذا عن قلوب الثوار في مختلف العالم؟ماذا عن المؤمنين والمعتقدين بمبادئ سامية وأهداف نبيلة،ولكنهم لا يمتلكون البندقية،ماذا ستكون نهايتهم؟

الرواية تمثل وجبة دسمة،تفقد النطق بعد قرائتها وستقف منبهر أمام بديع صنع الكاتب،من أين أتى له كل هذه الخيال ليكتب كل تلك الأحداث والشخصيات ويظل متحكم بزمام روايته بسلاسة مستفزة؟من أين له العبقرية في الكتابة بأعصاب باردة عن دم يُسفك وبشر يُقتلوا ومبادئ تضيع؟

عظمة الأدب في بقاءه وصلاحه لكل زمان ومكان،ويوسا ناجح في ذلك باقتدار،فقد نجح في تحويل حرب إقليمية منذ أكثر من قرن لقضية عالمية بمزية جعلتها قضية كل مجتمع.

I had read a couple of Vargas Llosa books years ago, in Spanish, when I lived in South America and my Spanish was still OK, and I remembered him as a witty, sexy, playful writer. I'm not sure if I have changed, he has changed, my memory is bad, or if this is just a very different book from the ones I read previously. In any case, the overall tone here is as far removed from those three adjectives as possible – relentless oppressiveness is the keynote instead.

Which perhaps is appropriate, since the subject is the War of Canudos, an obscure civil conflict in backlands Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century. Gathered around the enigmatic figure of Antônio Conselheiro – ‘the Counselor’ – a group of rural villagers, outcasts and former bandits form a breakaway religious community, which holds out against the state before being, inevitably, crushed by the weight of the country's military.

How do you tell a story like this? And for that matter, why do you want to? The two questions are related, I think. I was waiting to discover Vargas Llosa's thoughts on the wider significance of Canudos, or perhaps his exploration of the mindset that led people to join such a movement. But in fact, neither of these things feature much in the book. There are hints that the conflict was interpreted as a struggle ‘of the seacoast against the interior…of the new Brazil against traditional Brazil’, but these hints are not developed very far. Similarly, near the end, one character wonders (as well he might),

What is the explanation of Canudos? Hereditary defects of people of mixed blood? Lack of education? A predisposition toward barbarism on the part of men who are accustomed to violence and who resist civilization out of atavism? Something to do with religion, with God? He finds none of these explanations satisfactory.

And nor do I! But we ain't going to get anything else. The point, perhaps, is that there are no easy explanations, but if so, this is a rather banal point to labour 680 pages on.

Instead, Vargas Llosa's intention seems to be simply to narrate the events of the conflict, in what I'm going to call punishing detail. In the absence of any clear thematic guidance, one event succeeds another in a kind of narrative wasteland where sexual rivalry, rape, violence and military logistics repeat themselves over and over again. There were four military expeditions against Canudos. You could imagine a book which just told the story of the final one, with perhaps some decisive flashbacks to earlier events. But here we get all four of them, with a level of granularity and repetition that – admittedly – does have a kind of cumulative power, but it's the slow power of glaciers, or continental drift.

The cast is very large, as Vargas Llosa tells the story by means of a Tolstoyan cross-section of society, ranging across professions, classes and backgrounds. Yet where in Tolstoy this makes everything feel orchestral, polyphonic, here by contrast the effect is frustratingly monotone. Everyone, whoever they are, seems to be in the grip of the same degradation, confusion, and stultifying machismo. Female characters are introduced with throwaway comments like, ‘She had cut all her hair off herself after being raped for the fourth time’, and indeed sexual victimisation is the prime characteristic of all the women here – which doubtless has its historical accuracy, but it would have been nice to see these attitudes examined a bit more.

The translation, by Helen R Lane, is really good for the most part, though I found it a bit annoying that the character of El Beatito (a workable handle in Spanish) is translated as ‘the Little Blessed One’, which sounds deeply unlikely in English. There is a nice scattering of Brazilian vocabulary throughout the novel – mostly details of the local flora and fauna – yet the writing in general is quite utilitarian, and scorns the playful prose that I had remembered from other Vargas Llosa books. There is a sense that he is writing every line with an awareness of his subject's importance, and although this helps maintain a serious tone, it also feels laborious at times.

What is this book for? I kept asking myself. It's based heavily on the non-fictional account Os Sertões by Euclides da Cunha, a journalist who accompanied the army on the Canudos campaign, and da Cunha is (I'm assuming) immortalised here in the character of the unnamed ‘nearsighted journalist’, who's the closest thing the novel has to a hero. I would really like to read his book and get a feel for how far Vargas Llosa has deviated from the source material; maybe then I would have a clearer sense of what he hopes the novel should achieve. As it is, though the conclusion has an undeniable power, it feels like it's a hell of a long time coming.

I loved Russian novels when I was young and read and reread every Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and other 18th and 19th century novelists I could get my hands on (in English). When I was in my late twenties, I remembered being so thrilled to have found a "major" Tolstoy that I hadn't read or even known (Resurrection, which actually turned out to be sort of mediocre). I think I might even have called in sick to stay home and read it, straight through, twice. Finding this book was similar, except better - I've discovered a book that has rocketed right to the top of my most cherished works. It's like an earthquake has changed my mental landscape, making room for the places and people of this book, the story and the issues Vargas Llosa covers, the humanity and heart, spirit and community, good and bad that he packs into the pages. I'm overwhelmed.

Όταν ξεκίνησα να το διαβάζω δεν είχα καταλάβει οτι πρόκειται για ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα και δεν είχα ξανακούσει ποτέ για το Κανούδος της Βραζιλίας.Ήταν μια εντελώς άγνωστη σε μένα ιστορία και στην αρχή το διάβαζα λίγο αδιάφορα αλλά πολύ γρήγορα με τράβηξε μέσα της και βρέθηκα να ψάχνω πληροφορίες και φωτογραφίες στο google.
Ένας "μεσσίας"-φανατικός περιφέρεται για χρόνια στην φτωχή και άνυδρη περιοχή του Σερτάο μαζεύοντας σιγά σιγά γύρω του κάθε καρυδιάς καρύδι ,απο φτωχούς που δεν έχουν στον ήλιο μοίρα μέχρι διαβόητους ληστές και βιαστές που αποφασίζουν να αλλάξουν ζωή και να ακολουθήσουν τον "άγιο".Όταν όλοι αυτοί,οι χιλιάδες πια άνθρωποι, καταπατούν μια περιοχή στο Κανούδος και δημιουργούν ένα είδος κομμούνας,αμφισβητώντας την κεντρική κυβέρνηση,αρνούμενοι να χρησιμοποιησουν χρήματα και στρεφόμενοι κατά της νεοσύστατης δημοκρατίας την οποία θεωρούν του διαβόλου,αρχίζουν τα προβλήματα.Η κυβέρνηση αρχίζει να τους παίρνει στα σοβαρά,να τους θεωρεί επικίνδυνους,στέλνει εναντίον τους στρατό και ξεκινάει ο πόλεμος της συντέλειας του κόσμου.
Είναι μια ιστορία οπου όλοι έχουν και δίκιο και άδικο ,οπου δεν υπάρχει άσπρο μαύρο,σχεδόν όλοι οι χαρακτήρες κάποια στιγμή θα σε απογοητεύσουν,σχεδον όλους κάποια στιγμή θα τους θαυμάσεις.Δεν υπάρχουν άγιοι.Υπάρχει όμως φανατισμός.Και ηρωισμός.Μόνο που αυτά τα δυο συχνά συνδέονται.
Η αφήγηση μας δείχνει ανθρώπους και απο τις δυο πλευρές.Οι ιστορίες ανθρώπινες,συγκλονιστικές,ανατριχιαστικές,φρικιαστικές κάποιες φορές ,και τοσο αληθινές που καμιά φορά σου σηκώνεται η τρίχα.
Ένα πραγματικά εκπληκτικό βιβλίο.

این کتاب یک داستان برآمده از تخیل یوسا بر اساس یک واقعه‌ی تاریخی در برزیله. زمانی که برزیل از نظام سلطنت به جمهوری رسید، یک فرد مذهبی در گوشه‌ای دور افتاده برای خودش یک استان مستقل تشکیل داد که جمهوری رو حکومت شیطان میدونست و این اتفاق به بحرانی تبدیل شد که در انتها به فاجعه‌ای منجر شد. اما این کتاب با توصیف فردی معروف به مرشد شروع میشه، در همون چند صفحه‌ی ابتدایی کتاب می‌خونیم: «بلندبالا بود و چندان تکیده که انگار همیشه نیم‌رخش را می‌دیدی. پوستی تیره و اندامی استخوانی داشت و آتشی هماره در چشمانش می‌سوخت. صندل شبانان را به پا داشت و شولای کبود رنگی که پیکرش را می‌پوشانید، یادآور ردای مبلغانی بود که گاه و بیگاه به دهکده‌های پرت افتاده صحرا سر می‌زنند تا بر خیل کودکان نو زاد نام بگذارد و زنان و مردان را که با هم زندگی می‌کردند به عقد هم درآورند. پی بردن به سن و سال او، ایل و تبارش و ماجرای زندگی‌اش ناممکن بود، اما در خلق و خوی آرام، رفتار بی‌تکلف و وقار بر هم نخوردنی‌اش چیزی بود که حتی قبل از آن که موعظه خود را آغاز کند، مردم را به سویش می‌کشاند.» خب پس یک شخصیت مذهبی کاریزماتیک داریم که بسیاری جذب اون میشن. و بعد از اون این افراد به جایی به نام کانودوس میرن و شبه حکومتی زیر نظر مرشد تشکیل میدن در مخالفت با جمهوری. در یک چهارم ابتدایی کتاب به شخصیت‌های اصلی و تاثیرگذار همراه مرشد پرداخته شده و داستان زندگی اونها به طور خلاصه بیان شده. این قسمت برای من بسیار جذاب بود. بسیاری از این افراد به خاطر پذیرفته نشدن و درک نشدن توسط بقیه و یا ظلمی که بهشون شده بود جذب مرشد شدند تا یا از بقیه فرار کنند و یا از گذشته‌ی خودشون توبه کنند، افراد جنایتکار، علیل، ناقص‌الخلقه و ضعیف. در ادامه به دیدگاه اهالی سیاست به این اتفاق پرداخته و حتی به سواستفاده‌ای که برای برتری حزب مطبوع خودشون از این واقعه داشتند، دسیسه‌ها و دروغ‌ها و ... و بعد از این به چند جنگ بین اهالی کانودوس و نیروهای اعزامی جمهوری می‌رسیم تا اینکه سرنوشت افراد رو متوجه بشیم. بزرگترین نقطه‌ی قوت کتاب از نظر من اینه که تمام روایت رو از دید افراد مختلف و گروه‌های مخالف هم نقل می‌کنه و در هیچ بخشی هیچ سوگیری و قضاوتی در روایت نمی‌بینید گویا همه در این ماجرا محق بودن. نقطه‌ی قوت دیگه‌ای که میتونم بهش اشاره کنم به اندازه بودنه، با اینکه کتاب بیش از نهصد صفحه هست هیچ جایی نیست که شما پیش خودتون بگید اه! چقدر توضیح میده! قاعدتاً با توجه به روحیات هر فرد قسمت‌هایی از کتاب براش جذابیت بیشتری داره و قسمت‌هایی جذابیت کمتر اما به جرات میتونم بگم هیچ جایی از کتاب پر گویی نداره. نکته‌ی دیگه اینه که کتاب پر از درس‌های سیاسیه، مخصوصاً جایی که اشاره میشه حکومت جمهوری برزیل هم مثل خیلی از حکومت‌های دیگه وقتی ریشه‌ی اتفاق رو پیدا نمیکنه فوراً میگه کار کار انگلیسیاست! کار سلطنت‌طلباست! به جز موضوع کلی که در واقع همون جنگ آخر زمان هست، خرده داستانهای کتاب برای من خیلی جذاب بود. ماجراهای افراد نزدیک به مرشد، مادر مردمان، شیر ناتوبا، کوچولوی مقدس و ... و همچنین قسمت‌های مربوط به گالیلئوگال و ژورما و اتفاقاتی که براشون میفته. این کتاب واقعا ارزشمند بود و خوشحالم که خوندمش. اما در نهایت بگم اینکه اسم و رسم حکومت چیه خیلی مهم نیست، وقتی حکومت دست آدمهای درست نباشه، خواه اسمش جمهوری باشه خواه سلطنت، اون حکومت شیطانه! چه بسا ما جمهوری‌های سراغ داریم که شاگرد اول کلاس شیطان هستند، دیگه با دست اشاره نکنم کیا. ه

Gerçek bir olaydan yola çıkılarak yazılmış bir roman. 19. yüzyılda Brezilya’nın iç kesimlerinde Bahia eyaletinde yaşanan bir savaşı, 1897’deki Canudos Savaşı’nı anlatıyor yazar Llosa. Diğer romanlarında olduğu gibi Güney Amerika’nın tarihinden belki de kötü talihinden sahneler aktarıyor.

Bir din adamı (Vaiz) etrafında toplanan ve dinsel birlikteliğin özgürlük ve eşitliğe evrildiği bir komünün, dönemin yönetimi Cumhuriyet’e karşı başkaldırısının ve buna karşı ordunun müdahalesinin hikayesi. Hikayenin sonunu kitaba başladıktan sonra tahmin ediyorsunuz ancak o kadar güzel örülmüş ki hikaye, soluksuz okuyorsunuz.

Dünya Sonu Savaşı, iktidar baskısı, fakirlik, cehalet ve dinsel fanatizmin yıkıcı sonuçlarını anlatırken, devrim idealiyle otoriteye karşı başkaldırmanın şaşırtıcı benzerliklerini de çok cesurca dile getiriyor. Anlatılan hiçbir şey mantıkdışı değil ve gerçek hayatta yaşanabilecek olaylar, örneğin yakın tarihte kendini Bağdat Halifesi ilan eden bir mezcupun arkasında toplananlar gibi.

Kurgu mükemmel, anlatım abartısız ve sade ama çok vurucu. Başlarda çok sayıda isim olması kitabı takibi güçleştirse de kısa zamanda romana hakim olunuyor. Mario Vargas Llosa’dan okuduğum üçüncü kitap (Teke Şenliği, Hikaye Anlatıcısı). Üçü de tarihi öğeler taşıyor, üçü de çok farklı tarz ve kurguyla yazılmış, üçü de farklı Güney Amerika ülkesinde geçiyor. Latin Amerikalı yazarlar arasında Roberto Bolano ile ayrı bir yere koyuyorum Llosa’ı.

Hacimli bir kitap, 850 sayfa, ancak çok rahat ve tempolu okunuyor, ayrıca Süleyman Doğru’nun çevirisi övgüye değer. Okunmasını önereceğim bir “opus magnus”.
