About the author

Smith was born in Villa Park, Orange County, California. In interviews, she has said she realized she wanted to be a writer sometime between kindergarten and first grade, “when a teacher praised a horrible poem I’d written”, and began writing in earnest in elementary school. Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Experimental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1987, followed by teaching credentials in Elementary education and Special education from San Francisco State University.

She taught kindergarten and special education for several years before becoming a full-time writer. Her first book, The Night of the Solstice, was published by MacMillan in 1987, followed by, Heart of Valor in 1990, and the 4-volume Vampire Diaries series in 1991-2. Three trilogies followed: The Secret Circle (1992), The Forbidden Game (1994), and Dark Visions (1995). The first installment of her popular Night World series was published in 1996, followed by eight more over the next two years. In 1998, Smith began a decade-long hiatus from writing, returning in 2008 with a new Web site and a series of new short stories. The Vampire Diaries series was reissued in 2007, followed by re-printings of The Secret Circle trilogy and Night World series in 2008/2009. The Night of the Solstice and Heart of Valor was also reissued in 2008. Three new Vampire Diaries installments were published in 2009 and 2010.

Smith lived in the San Francisco Bay area “with one dog, three cats, and about ten thousand books.”

She passed away on March 8th, 2025, after a lengthy illness.

This was really great. A short story about Elena and Mats 10th date . I'm a massive fan of the vampire diaries series , and It is really nice to get a bit of insight in to Matt and Elena's relationship as a couple before the Salvitore brothers came on the scene. They really seemed to make a lovely couple . I really think things could of been very different for them both if Elena never met Stefan. And it really makes you understand why Matts still so hung up on her. The date comes to a very eventful end , with Matt and Elena both risking their lives to save some children playing on a frozen lake. In the process of saving them the ice cracks, and a young girl is plunged in to the icy water . Matt and Elena both try to save her and Matt manages to rescue the young girl only to end up in the icy embrace of the lakes water himself . Elena half frozen herself, manages to grab on to him , and with all her strength keeps his head above the water. She keeps him talking, even when Matt , delirious from the freezing temperature of the lake, tells her to save herself and prepares himself to let go and slip beneath the icy depths. She talks him round with a kiss, and holds on to him until help arrives . Uncle Joe is shown helping Matt and saving his life, with some good advice he once told him.
The book ends with a twist , when Matt loses his 100 dollars. He finds it again.... Or it is at least given back to him, by no other than .... his good old Uncle Joe's ghost!

I cannot wait to read some more of these short stories !

This was a cute short story but it makes you wish that Elena and Matt stayed together. This shows a different side of Elena and Matt. Elena without the scheming and just how lovestruck Matt was.

This short story was a little bit confusing to me, not because of the way it was narrated or the plot, but because it implies that there is a connection between Elena and Matt (maybe a psychic one or something related to past lives, but then in the return trilogy is implied that Elena and Stefan are soulmates, so it doesn't make that much sense. Also, this characters keep having feelings, premonitions when they are not suppose to have any kind of power, so it's weird). Besides that, I think it was really interesting and the stakes were pretty high, I mean we know Matt lives, but I genuinely feared for his life and the kids' lives. Overall I enjoyed it, but it left me with some questions.
Here we also see a little bit more of the hero side of Elena and even though I liked it, I like to think that she grows to be that hero throughout the books.

And once again, this seemed to be an opportunity to tell us how wonderful Elena was over and over again. She's beautiful, she looks like an angel, she's clever, she gets what she wants, everybody either wants her or wants to be her 🙄
She tries to get some kids off of a lake they are skating on, because the ice is too thin. One girl goes in and nearly drowns, and then poor Matt ends up going in and nearly dying. And what does Matt's mum say? Not why did you drag him onto a frozen pond that you knew wasn't safe?! But thank you Elena for saving my son's life! Seriously? My mother would have pressed charges! In fact if a girl did that to my son she'd be in trouble, not praised!

My favourite thing about this little read were Matt's descriptions of Elena.

"She couldn't be an angel, she was too vibrant and alive. Maybe she was an enchantress. Maybe she was a water spirit. No question that she was magic."

He looked at her like she put the stars in the sky. Talk about goals. I also really enjoy seeing Elena's different personality here in comparison to the show. She seems really real and elegant in an unknowingly way, determined to get what she wants but also has a soft side for the people she lets in. Despite me preferring their first date, I did enjoy this!

Looking back, this book should be read after The Awakening as a flashback moment and not as a prelude, just focusing on the history between Matt and Elena. I'll give this one three stars since Elena is less manipulative and conniving in this book, and Matt, you feel bad for since you now understand he truly was just head over heels for Elena, and while he did expect her earlier in the relationship to be perfect, really it's just how she saw her (before they broke up anyway). I know the constant talking about how beautiful she is may annoy readers however I think it's a smart way to illustrate the former angelic sweet, gets-everything-she-wants, version of Elena before her journey embarks on the darker side of the paranormal world.

This was sweet and endearing. It shows a side to Elena that we haven't necessarily seen in the first 4 books. It gives her a softer more likable side. My fondness for Matt as a character has now grown and having only read the first 4 in the series- he is my favorite male character. Yep! I said it! Over Stefan, over Damon- MATT ALL THE WAY.


My one issue with this is that if you do decide to read them in order this is the first one that notes some type of technology. Where as the primary works (1-4) had not mentioned anything like cellphones or internet. Though they were written in the early 90s they did a good job of being written in such a way that you could think they were current. In this story Elena mentions buying her nylons online and she uses a mobile phone. Nothing major- just interesting to me.

Esse conto fala do encontro para comemorar os dois meses do relacionamento formal de Matt e Elena, da série "Diários do Vampiro", ainda antes do primeiro livro da série. Após o encontro deles, na lagoa Wickery, Matt cai no lago, abaixo da camada de gelo e tenta se salvar...

A Lisa fez esse conto de uma forma bem legal como continuação do "Matt & Elena: Primeiro Encontro", porque, enquanto o Matt está delirando, ele fica relembrando dos acontecimentos descritos no conto anterior. Há também uma melhor descrição do que Elena sente por ele, o que não é muito descrito no outro.

Being able to get these sneak peeks of Matt and Elena’s relationship is simply refreshing. Elena is given a softer, endearing side than normally portrayed. This sweet short story gives the readers a better understanding as to why Matt is so smitten towards her.

A must read for Malena fans and anyone looking for a short, saccharine sweet story.

This was okay. It wasn't dramatic or thrilling at all, but I enjoyed the part where Elena and Matt had their reunion. At times, I found Elena a bit annoying. I understand she's skinny and pretty, but Matt didn't need to keep repeating it.

I'm not a big fan of drama, and I felt that that's what this story was. Drama, drama, drama, with a side of praise Elena endlessly. Matt's infatuation with Elena is boring, and Elena herself is unrealistically perfect. At least, that's how she's portrayed in this short. Other than all that, this was a pretty decent story.
